GamePro has posted an all-new preview of some of the levels that will feature in Activision’s Quantum of Solace.

The website scored a one-hour gameplay session with the forthcoming James Bond title and tested out three levels: two from the Quantum of Solace section and one from the Casino Royale flashback section.

The site reports that all of the three levels–Siena Underground, Siena Rooftops and Casino Royale–demonstrated ‘relentless pacing and top-notch shooter action’.

Of particular notice were the responsive A.I. enemies, the large selection of weaponry and also Bond’s ability to hack into security equipment, such as cameras. Additionally, the site reports that there are even more powerful weapons, such as magnum revolvers, hidden throughout some of the levels.

Their overall verdict? ‘Overall, we came away from this play session fairly impressed. The controls are tight, and the pacing is excellent mirroring the more physical fast-paced action in the latest Bond movie.’

  5. 'We need to make the gamer feel clever as they play Bond.'

    By Devin Zydel on 2008-08-29

A new Quantum of Solace video interview hosted by VideogameVisionary has appeared online at YouTube.

In this interview, executive producer Stuart Roch discusses how they approached the challenge of adapting both Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace into one game, how to best represent the character of James Bond in the game, a newly developed AI system and much more.

‘I think it’s great,’ Roch says. ‘This is the first time in 22 Bond films that there’s a direct sequel to the previous one, so Casino Royale ends and Quantum of Solace picks up right after. Obviously this is called Quantum of Solace: The Game, so it did create kind of a unique narrative challenge in that we wanted to give gamers who started playing the game some Quantum of Solace content right off the bat and then flashback to Casino Royale and that’s exactly how we approached it.’

When asked what sort of challenges were faced when transitioning 007 from film to video game, Roch said: ‘The beauty of the Bond franchise is that we get a lot of material to draw from and I think the new Daniel Craig Bond lends himself really well to a video game. The challenge of course is making sure we’re being true to the franchise and to the films.’

‘What we have to be mindful of is “Are we representing Bond? Are we representing the franchise as best we can?” So there’s just a lot of little catchphrases we through around the development environment, like: “Bond has a licence to kill, but not to murder”, so that gives us a guideline of how to work. He’s a new gritty Bond, but he doesn’t kill innocent people, so he’s not supposed to be brutal and ruthless.’

He continues: ‘Another one might be: “Bond’s greatest weapon is his mind”. Well, that tells us it’s not just about running around shooting everyone in the chest. We need to make the gamer feel clever as they play as Bond.’

There’s much more. Click below to check out the video interview:

  6. Interview: 'Quantum of Solace' Game Co-Design Director Adam Gascoine

    By Devin Zydel on 2008-08-28

As the release date of Activision’s Quantum of Solace approaches, Joystiq recently sat down for an interview with the game’s co-design director, Adam Gascoine.

One of the specifics regarding this upcoming James Bond is that it’s worldwide release dates more or less correspond with those for the film of the same name. As it is the first 007 game to be released alongside the film, concerns about having to rush the design naturally crept up–thankfully, Gascoine reveals this wasn’t an issue here.

‘We were worried about being rushed when we started the project,’ he said, ‘but thankfully we have a very solid relationship with the movie team. We were one of the first to see the script for the movie, plus we’ve been able to visit the sets and watch some filming several times now. All this made it a lot easier. We’ve been developing really since Casino Royale, about two and a half years in total, so we’ve had plenty of time to develop the game.’

As mentioned previously, the Casino Royale scenes will act as flashbacks in the game. ‘The game is called Quantum of Solace, so we wanted you to get straight into the new stuff from the first level. There are also some levels that show scenes that are not from either films, but are part of their stories.’

Gascoine also revealed that the game will support an achievement system that will be the same for the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 platforms. ‘These aren’t just simple progression achievements for completing each level,’ he explained, ‘we’ve also got a lot of specific challenge achievements in there as well.’

Another hallmark the Quantum of Solace game has going for it are the contributions from the stars of Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace.

As first reported on CommanderBond.net earlier this month, stars from the films, including Daniel Craig, Dame Judi Dench, Mathieu Amalric, Olga Kurylenko, and Gemma Arterton from Quantum of Solace and Casino Royale‘s Eva Green and Mads Mikkelsen have lended their voices and likenesses to the game.

‘At first there were some who were a bit cautious, but by the end everyone was really into it,’ said Gascoine. ‘I think there’s a lot more respect for video games nowadays. Those that had never done it before, like Judi Dench, got very excited about seeing themselves in the game.’

He continued: ‘Daniel Craig was actually the most reluctant. He’s a big gamer himself and didn’t want to be in a poorly made licensed game, so we sat him down and let him play an early build. He loved it and came back to us to say “Okay, I’ll do it.” Since then he’s been a very important part of making the game what it is. We try to get him to give us feedback as much as possible, but he is obviously a very busy man. We’ll send script drafts to him to check over, so he’s been been involved with that aspect too.’

Lastly, Gascoine discussed what the general do’s and do not’s were when it came to Bond. Specifically, he referred to a ‘Bond Bible’ which lays out all the details and traits of 007. And while Craig’s film debut in Casino Royale may have been a somewhat darker interpretation of Bond than moviegoers had seen in the past, this new Bond game will remain a ‘T’een-rated affair.

‘We want as genuine a Bond experience as possible. Also, we’re a “T”een game. We didn’t want the game to be supremely violent or dark, so we were limited in that respect, too.’

  9. 'Casino' And 'Quantum' Actors Lend Voices To New James Bond Game

    By Matt Weston on 2008-08-20

WorthPlaying today passes on the news that Activision’s debut James Bond game, Quantum of Solace will feature a range of talent from both of Daniel Craig’s 007 films.

In addition to Craig himself, Dame Judi Dench, Mathieu Amalric and Olga Kurylenko are among the Quantum of Solace cast members lending their voices and likenesses to the new game. Casino Royale‘s Eva Green and Mads Mikkelsen will also reprise their roles for the game.

The announcement follows Electronic Arts’ trend of securing 007 alumni for their Bond games: Pierce Brosnan lent his voice and likeness to 2004’s Everything or Nothing, while in 2005, the company achieved the impossible by luring Sir Sean Connery back to the role of James Bond in From Russia With Love.

Treyarch’s studio head, Mark Lamia, said, “Quantum of Solace represents a new era for James Bond video games, allowing players to step into the role of Daniel Craig’s 007 agent as embodied in Casino Royale and the upcoming Bond film. With the tremendous support we’ve received from the film studio and unprecedented access to the key talent from the movie, we are thrilled to be able to deliver a true, more exciting Bond universe to gamers and fans who have waited years for this game.”

Quantum of Solace will be released on 31 October in the UK and 4 November in the US on the following formats: PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii, Playstation 2, Nintendo DS and Windows PC.

  10. 'Quantum of Solace' Aimed At Both First And Third-Person Gamers

    By Devin Zydel on 2008-08-11

Activision’s upcoming James Bond video game, Quantum of Solace, has been aimed at pleasing both first- and third-person gamers with a mix of both.

MTV reports that the decision to incorporate both styles of gameplay in Quantum of Solace sparked from a consumer survey Activision organized in advance of the development.

Treyarch, the lead development studio for the game, revealed that the survey resulted in a 60-40 split in favor of first-person 007 game.

Therefore, Activision has designed the gameplay to cater to both styles. Executive producer Garrett Young previously said: ‘Our camera is actually a hybrid between first-person and third-person. You run through the game as a first-person shooter, but when you come up to a situation where you don’t know what’s around the corner or if you’re in a firefight and you need to take a second to gather your thoughts and figure out tactically which guy you should take out first, you can take cover and make those decisions in a safe place.’

‘We want the gamer to move as smoothly as James Bond would. You know, you don’t get the training that a MI6 agent does to become a double-oh, but we want you to look like you do and have that level of control and that level of fluidity.’

Are you pleased that the Quantum of Solace game will mix together first- and third-person perspectives? Sound off here on the CommanderBond.net Forums.
