  2. "It's kind of locked in this no-man's land."

    By Matt Weston on 2008-08-07

VideoGamer.com have scored a massive interview with Rare’s senior software engineer, Nick Burton, in which he discusses the status of the much-touted Xbox LIVE Arcade version of the studio’s classic James Bond shooter, GoldenEye 007.

Microsoft had previously indicated that Nintendo was at the heart of the holdup of the revamped game’s release, with the company reportedly against GoldenEye appearing on Microsoft’s console.

“The ball’s not in anybody at Rare’s court really,” Burton said. “It’s squarely in the license holders’ courts. It’s a shame. It’s kind of locked in this no man’s land. There’s nothing on LIVE Arcade, there’s nothing on Wii.”

Burton continued, “To be fair, I kind of wished that the differences got sorted out, but obviously there’s the licensing issue for Bond, even if it’s something that’s already come out. It’s incredibly hard to solve because there’s so many licence holders involved. You’ve got the guys that own the license to the gaming rights now, the guys that have the licence to Bond as an IP, and there are umpteen licensees.”

“Me, just personally, I thought, God, that’s a difficult problem to solve. The guys wanted to go and make it. I guess it probably got to them maybe, I don’t know, but for me I just kind of thought that we’d never manage it, never quite make it. But the feeling’s not too bad really. It’s what it’s like as a games developer. You have to treat something that’s not seen the light of day as a prototype. I’ve had, what, four or five things that never happened. It’s funny that we don’t even talk about them a lot of the time, because you think, well, we might revisit it.”

Burton said that Rare is aware of gamers’ appetites for the GoldenEye rerelease.

“It’s just what happens legally sometimes. Not necessarily with games, but you see it with music and films. Things get locked in this legal limbo. Even most of the parties involved, probably all the parties involved want to solve it. It’s such a complex issue. It amazes me. I sort of sit on the periphery, but I know a few guys in the legal team. Why can’t this happen? I want to play it and I want everyone else to play it. And they’re like ‘well, there’s this and this and this and that, and you have to have approval from them, and then there’s artist approval, all the way up to probably Pierce Brosnan has to say it’s all right for this’. There’s not enough hours in the day.”

“Ultimately everyone loses out. Including the license holders.”

Burton also refused to confirm that leaked screenshots from the revamped GoldenEye were genuine: “I can’t say. Again, infer what you will from that [laughs]. Let’s just say. The last thing about GoldenEye: Legal mine field.”

The website also questioned Burton as to whether the original 1997 release still holds a shadow over the studio’s output.

“No, not at all. I wouldn’t say indifference. It’s nice to see people still talk about it. But I also think, and a lot of us think this, that you look back at it and it’s still good fun to play, but if I played it now with my gaming tastes as refined as they are now, would I still have the same reaction or have I really got rose tinted spectacles on? It’s almost impossible to separate one from the other. I still look at it and think, no, it’s got great level design for instance, but then you think I’m saying that because maybe the control feels really good, but it’s not perfect. But it’s not perfect because the frame rate wasn’t high enough. It’s very difficult to separate your memory.”

“I think sometimes it gets to you a bit when you a get a forum poster say “Rare’s not as good as it used to be”. In reality, if you look at our recent games, they’re better than they ever were. It’s just that the market has changed, and diversified and got a lot bigger, and we still appeal to the audience we appealed to. Gaming changed and started to fracture a lot. One studio will find it very difficult to fulfil everybody’s tastes, unless you get that one golden moment where you get that true breakout game, that breaks outside of its niche and becomes that phenomenon like GTA and Halo. They do that because they’re very good games, without doubt, but these days you have to have that alignment of the planets, where the marketing has to be right, the time has to be right, all the social aspects have to come into alignment. And when it does you get an amazing effect, but it’s more than the sum of its parts, without a doubt.”

Activision will be hoping for such a planetary alignment as their debut 007 game based upon the films Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace hits shelves later this year.

  4. Activision Delivering Action In 'Quantum of Solace' Game

    By Devin Zydel on 2008-08-02

ComputerAndVideoGames.com got a chance to play a demo version of Activision’s forthcoming James Bond game, Quantum of Solace, and have posted a brand new preview of what is in store for 007 gamers.

Apparently, action is the key word, if this report is anything to go by. ‘It’s a first-class shooter in a Bond wrapper,’ said Quantum of Solace executive producer Garret Young.

One specific comparison from film-to-game was a section where James Bond comes across a meeting between Casino Royale‘s Le Chiffre and Steven Obanno. While a brutal stair fight involving Bond, Obanno and his henchman occurs in the film around this sequence, the game however takes a different stance:

‘Bond blasts his way from corridor to corridor, through a spa room and into a large open ballroom. I counted over 60 henchman, that’s 58 more than in the movie. This isn’t quiet. This is explosive gunning–Call of Duty 4 style.’

Head over to ComputerAndVideoGames.com to check out the entire report on the development of Quantum of Solace.

  5. 'Second-rate James Bond games a thing of the past'

    By Devin Zydel on 2008-07-25

Treyarch Studios, the company responsible for developing Actvision’s Quantum of Solace for the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360, clearly has high hopes for the return of James Bond to video games.

According to a report at MCV, the company is hoping that Quantum of Solace will mark a return to form after some of the more disappointing releases from Electronic Arts (EA).

‘We’re not trying to fix anything EA did wrong, because that’s just what they did,’ explained Quantum of Solace executive producer Garrett Young.

He added: ‘I’m sure the series pissed off a lot of gamers over the last few years as the games started to go downhill, but we have no control over that.’

‘The pressure we feel is more about launching this franchise in the right way. We know that you only have one chance to make a really great first impression, and this is it.’

‘We hope Quantum of Solace the movie will be very successful. Casino Royale was tremendously successful so I expect this film will do well, too. And I’m confident that our game will do great on the back of that.’

  10. 'Quantum of Solace' Game Trailer Gives Fans A Preview Of 007 In Action

    By Devin Zydel on 2008-07-09

Following up several recent previews and interviews regarding Activision’s debut 007 game, Quantum of Solace, a brand new video trailer showcasing many different action highlights has been released online at GameTrailers.com.

Available to view in SD and HD, the three-minute long trailer includes a discussion with game executive producer Garrett Young in which he explains the thought process behind the design of the game and goes into detail about what James Bond gamers can expect.

    Click below to view:

Young said: ‘We looked at the movie Casino Royale and the script for Quantum of Solace since the movie is not out yet, and said “What are the great action sequences that we want to pull out of this and give gamers that interactive experience?”‘

‘Our camera is actually a hybrid between first-person and third-person,’ he continued. ‘You run through the game as a first-person shooter, but when you come up to a situation where you don’t know what’s around the corner or if you’re in a firefight and you need to take a second to gather your thoughts and figure out tactically which guy you should take out first, you can take cover and make those decisions in a safe place.’

‘We want the gamer to move as smoothly as James Bond would. You know, you don’t get the training that a MI6 agent does to become a double-oh, but we want you to look like you do and have that level of control and that level of fluidity.’

As previously reported, Young mentioned that the Quantum of Solace game was being built on the Call of Duty 4 engine. ‘A few of the things that we’re adding on top of this technology is you take cover during combat and see Bond on screen,’ he stated. ‘Our A.I. system is also a lot more dynamic. We’e got four guys working on it right now and have had for the last year. The last thing I’ll tell you we’re adding is that there’s just a lot more going on in the environment now. We’ve pushed the physics system and we’ve pushed the destructive system.’

Young also confirmed boss battles, saying: ‘It’s another element of the pacing and varied gameplay … it’ll be fun, like this quicktime style of event, but it will also be very cinematic as the Bond movies are.’

Referring to the wildly popular multiplayer feature that was apart of the GoldenEye game, Young said that multiplayer would play a big role in Quantum of Solace as well.

‘You know as well as I do with Bond movies, it’s international, exotic locations that make up such a big part and certainly Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace are no different. We took a scene that they were shooting and then ultimately cut from the movie; we said “Well, this still makes sense for a game, can we do this?” and they said sure. It’s actually kind of funny that you get to play a scene in our game that actually hit the cutting room floor for the movie.’

Keep watching the CommanderBond.net main page for all the latest news and complete coverage of Activision’s Quantum of Solace–due out on 4 November 2008.
