  1. Reid's Palace As Filming Location Denied

    By daniel on 2001-12-15

Nicolas Drapier from Bond20.Com has reported that yesterdays report that Reid's Palace in Madeira Island will not be used as a filming location for Bond 20.

In an e-mail from an assistant manager at the hotel has told Bond20.Com "I am afraid no one has contacted us directly to inform us about this possiblity and let alone, never did we confirm that Reid´s Palace has accepted this offer." However, they have said that they would be "very interested and honored to be part of a James Bond film".

While this apparently throws some doubt on the whole use of Madeira Island as a filming location, it is possible that the rest of the reports are true. The element of the report about Reid's Palace could have been the only part created.

Moreover, as Bond 20 Forum user 'White Persian' points out, the words in the e-mail appear to have been carefully selected; "This guy seems to be choosing his words very carefully. He says Reid's hotel hasn't been contacted "directly", and that they did not "confirm" that they have accepted this offer [that nobody's made directly]. He could well be keeping things under his hat so as not to jeopardise the deal or to have an influx of rubberneckers annoying the guests."

To discuss the denial of Reid's Palance visit this thread, or for the whole of the Maderia Island rumours visit this thread, in the Bond 20 Forum.

Thanks to Nicolas and Jay for alerting us to the news.

  2. First: Halle Berry Re-Confirms She's In Bond 20

    By daniel on 2001-12-14

You may be thinking you're seeing double, but you're not. But yet again we're the first Bond site with the breaking news. Yesterday Entertainment Tonight showed a small clip with Halle saying "I am Jinx. I am the bad Bond Girl". However, it was noted that the clip could have been edited to indicate that Halle was in Bond 20, when in fact she could have been saying she was still in negotiations.

However, using the chat board for her official site Halle has confirmed that she'll be in Bond 20. She wrote "Hello family…I have good news. The Bond deal is done! I am officially going to be Jinx! The filming starts in London on Jan 14th!!!! I am thrilled and I thank you all for being excited with me and for me! Love ya all, Halle."

After lots of speculation we now know another cast member of Bond 20. Speculation as to what she means by being a 'bad' Bond girl is on going.

Don't forget that you can discuss this in the Bond 20 Forums in this thread especially started about the casting of Halle Berry and some of the other cast members for Bond 20.

  3. When Is The Bond 20 Press Release Coming?

    By daniel on 2001-12-14

Bond fans have eagerly awaited the press release of Bond 20 for some time now, and it hasn't exactly been forthcoming. However, if the Portugese media are to be believed, it won't be coming until after Christmas and possibly in the New Year.

It has been reported that no further details about Bond 20 will be released until a major press conference is conducted at Pinewood Studio's. At the conference the cast and crew will be present. With this in mind, the press conference could come anytime after Christmas. Filming on Brosnan's current project wraps up on the 17th of December and Brosnan has already revealed that he's due at Pinewood on the 13th of January. So it seems the best estimate would be for the first few weeks on January. Despite our prediction, the date of the press release is expected to be announced soon.

We'll keep you informed. Thanks to 'Jay' for bringing this news to our attention.

  4. Madeira Island To Feature As Location

    By daniel on 2001-12-14

'Jay' alerts us in the Bond 20 Forums to reports from Portugal that Madeira Island in Portugal will be used as a filming location for Bond 20. This news has been reported by both SIC-R News Channel and the DN newspaper.

It appears that Producer Michael G Wilson and Associate Producer Tom Pevsner recently visited Madeira to conduct talks with the Regional Government President. All reports indicate that those talks were successful and that the producers have obtained the required licenses to film in the area.

Filming will apparently take place in two locations at the least. The first is the Madeira North Coast, where the roads are built into the mountain side. It has been reported that some of these roads will be closed for a few days at the end of February, work will be done at this stage by the Second Unit. The other location is the Reid's Hotel in Madeira. Other reports seem to indicate that filming may also take place at one of Madeira's casinos and some of it's exotic exterior gardens.

While not mentioning possible Asian locations the reports did mention Britain, Iceland and Spain as other filming locations. Recent news seems to indicate that the Spanish filming will be done in Cadiz which will double as Havana in Cuba.

Thanks to 'Jay' for the tip-off in the Bond 20 Forums, where you can discuss this news now!

  5. First: Halle Berry Confirms She's In Bond 20

    By daniel on 2001-12-13

Another first for CommanderBond.Net as we become the first Bond site to publish news that Halle Berry has confirmed she will be appearing in James Bond 20.

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight about her upcoming film with Billy Bob Thornton, Monster's Ball, the segment turned to Bond 20 with a small clip of Pierce Brosnan in The World Is Not Enough. With a voice over declaring that Berry will soon being work on Bond 20 a clip was shown of Berry saying "I will be the next Bond girl, a bad Bond girl. My characters name is Jinx".

Berry was first rumoured as appearing in Bond 20 when a news leak in Korea revealed that she and other actors were up for roles in the film. On the 28th of November 'Variety' revealed that Berry was indeed under considerations and only a few days later EON Productions followed suit. Since then Berry herself has also talked about starring in Bond 20. However, this is the first direct confirmation to date.

The only concern with the news on ET is the short length of the comment by Berry, it could have quite easily been edited out of context. However, it seems unlikely.

Thanks to Jeff for sending in the alert! And remember, you read it here first at Bond 20 @ CommanderBond.Net cause we're the first site with the news!

Don't forget to discuss this news in the Bond 20 Forums especially in this thread where Halle Berry has been the centre of attention. See you there!

  6. Reuters Reports On Cádiz As Filming Location

    By daniel on 2001-12-10

News agency Reuters has today reported that producers of Bond 20 will be using Cádiz in Spain as a filming location. Cádiz first became a rumoured location on the 8th of December when Europapress.com mentioned the news.

Interestingly enough Reuters has reported that part of Bond 20 "was to be shot in the southern Spanish port city because of its similarity with the Cuban capital Havana." So has Cuba now become a film-location for Bond 20? As users of the Bond 20 Forums have pointed out, original script drafts of The World Is Not Enough had Bond in Cuba. The original opening sequence where Bond is in a Swiss bankers office was originally set in Cuba, hence, we have the 'Cigar Girl'.

Reuters has also made a slight mention of the Cádiz's mayoress being offered a small part in the film. Spoiler Warning (Highlight To Read) The mayoress was reportedly offered a small part as a nurse who receives Bond in hospital. This news came from a spokesman for Mayoress Teofila Martinez. Her reason for turning down the role, it's not the best work for a politician.

Thanks to 'bondgirl' for bringing the news to my attention in this thread in the Bond 20 Forums. Don't forget to drop by and join in the coversation.

  7. Editorial: An Exploration Of The Delay In Official Information

    By daniel on 2001-12-09

Day in, day out, literally thousands of people frequent the official James Bond website seeking out official James Bond news on the next James Bond film, Bond 20. Yet all they have found in the past is a singular piece of news, that James Bond will drive an Aston Martin in Bond 20. And that’s all they official James Bond news they’ve found on the site in quite some time, and it’s been there since early August.

The thousand of people continually query, when are they going to get a press release? When are they going to learn the title, learn the cast, learn the plot? The simple answer is that I can’t tell you.

But why is it important to learn the names of the cast, or the crew or even the name of the film? Is it because if satisfies a persons curiosity? Many I’m sure would answer they want to know because they take an interest in the film; because they’re big James Bond fans, and just as the word fan is derived from it, these fans are fanatical. And there is nothing wrong about being fanatical about Bond, everyone has his or her passions and James Bond is a great one.

The question has to be asked as to whether or not is it enough for fans to learn the title from EON Productions? Realistically, what happens to a person after they find out the title? They tell their friends, discuss it with other fans and then… Well what comes next is perhaps further curiosity, a need to more information. It’s no longer about the title of James Bond 20, now people want the plot.

So what happens when they get the plot, does it go further? I’m sure for most people it would. Their curiosity grows and grows and they end up asking for sensitive information about the plot of the film and, as happened with The World Is Not Enough, the script is traded online through thousands of people. With The World Is Not Enough a lot of people had their hands on the script more than a year before the films release. No doubt there are fans out there that want the same from Bond 20.

It seems obvious that there is a danger in knowing information about anything. The human psyche works in such a way that it thirsts for more information, and certain information can be detrimental to particular things. For instance, if I were to tell you the plot of Bond 20 now it would ruin your viewing experience when you see the film. For such reasons all potentially damaging information found on CommanderBond.Net must be highlighted to be read, so that people can read Bond 20 news and not have parts of the film revealed to them unless they want it. There are those people who want to know everything possible and there are those who don’t want to know everything, it is perhaps the latter who best benefit from the current security surrounding Bond 20.

Fans need to place themselves in the shoes of EON Productions and all the other people that are employed as a result of James Bond 20. The films success depends on film sensitive information not falling into public hands, especially at this early stage. While the information that came to light before The World Is Not Enough was released didn’t appear to do the film any damage at the box office, the same can’t be presumed for Bond 20. After all, The World Is Not Enough has a smaller net following than Bond 20; perhaps the producers feel that sites such as CommanderBond.Net have the potential to release much more information.

I recall watching an interview with director Oliver Stone talking about JFK, he believe the film received a lot of bad press as the media were using a very early draft of the films script as a source. As a result, the film was damaged at the box office. No doubt many film studios hold a similar concern. No one wants to bring bad press to James Bond, least of all the fans. For this sole reasons fans need to adopt a level of understanding towards EON Productions.

And for those who argue that the title and the cast of Bond 20 can do nothing but give Bond 20 positive media coverage, it’s simply not true. It’s quite easy to criticise when you’re not in the position yourself. How easily could someone criticise Bond 20 for not having a completed cast list? It currently common knowledge that Halle Berry is still in negotiations to appear in Bond 20, therefore, it seems logical for EON Productions to delay any press release until they have a complete cast list.

As for the title, is it not reasonable to assume that EON and MGM have not decided upon the perfect title for Bond 20? Why rush out an unsuitable title just to appease the fans? Fleming didn’t name his books on the spur of the moment and it’s known that he went through several title changes.

And while fans may argue that they’ve waited so long for Bond 20 and they deserve some information now, have patience. If you’ve waited this long, how far around the corner is January? The cameras will roll for Bond 20 on January the 13th, and undoubtedly by this stage we’ll know at least the cast of Bond 20 as a minimum. That’s only a month away. So in the meantime sit back and enjoy your Christmas holidays.

Who knows, we may still get a press release anytime soon about Bond 20. Now that would be the perfect Christmas Present.

  8. Cádiz May Be Spanish Filming Location

    By daniel on 2001-12-08

Europapress.com has reported that Cádiz in southwestern Spain will play host to James Bond as the filming of scenes in Bond 20 takes place.

    While there isn't much further to report on it, there are some things of interest in Cádiz that could possibly be used in Bond 20;

    – Cadiz has a 9.5- to 11-kilometre circumference and is hemmed in by the sea from which it is protected by walls. To find out more about the fortress walls visit this link.

    – There is a Spanish naval base in Cádiz and a U.S. naval base at nearby Rota.

    – The mouth of the River Guadalquivir is in Cádiz.

    – The lighthouse in Chipiona, an area in Cádiz, is the tallest in Spain and one of the tallest in Europe. It's height is 69 meters. It was built between 1863 and 1867.

At this stage this is all rumour. We'll let you know more as it comes to light.

  9. Halle Berry Talks Bond 20

    By daniel on 2001-12-07

    American actress Halle Berry has confirmed rumours that she is currently negotiating to appear in James Bond 20. In an interview on "Cinema Confidential" Berry has said;

Are you going to be the next Bond girl? Is that rumor true?

You know what, I don’t know and the truth is I’m trying to work out the dates with “X-Men 2.” I’ve been having a really hard time working around my X-Men schedule because it’s a sequel. They are in first position so they have to approve of every movie that I take that could possibly interfere with their start date. Trouble is, they don’t really have a start date. So, it’s getting very gray because I really want to be able to go work but at the same time I have to honor my contract with them, so they’re trying really hard to work it out with MGM and I hope it works out.

Berry has also commented on the nature of her character in Bond 20. I must warn you there are potential plot spoilers in both the question and her reply (however, part does not as a result it won't be hidden) so you'll have to highlight the news to read it. WebTV users, and other users incapable of highlight, view the printer friendly version above.

    Spoiler Warning (Highlight To Read)

Now, you are supposed to be playing a villain in the Bond movie?

Yes, I am his nemesis this time around. I will not be topless. I actually have a clause that says, “I will not be topless in this movie.”

There's a big confirmation there about the nature of Berry's character. It was only recently that EON Productions had confirmed that Berry was in negotiations for the role, now Berry has confirmed further rumours. Despite what Berry has said about an unknown filming date for X-Men 2 it has recently been reported that filming will commence in May.

It would be a shame if Berry was forced to miss filming Bond 20 because of X-Men. Not only would it be a loss for Bond 20 but it would also be a loss for X-Men as Berry's role in Bond would obviously bring a lot of attention to the film.

Berry has been a hot topic in the Bond 20 Forums, the only place to discuss Bond 20, and this thread is devoted to discussing her role and other Bond 20 casting. See you there!

Finally a big thanks to Thomas Chau from "Cinema Confidential" for sending in the news. If you're interested in reading the full interview, epecially details on X-Men 2, visit" Cinema Confidential".

  10. All The News & Rumours From Korea

    By daniel on 2001-12-06

On November 25 we reported news that had leaked from Korea about the cast and plot of Bond 20. Since then more news has come to light, including a confirmation from EON Productions that actress Halle Berry was indeed being considered for a role in Bond 20. Such confirmation obviously gave majorly credbility to the news out of Korea.

Thanks to 'DreamLord' we've been able to round up all the Bond 20 news that has surfaced in Korea. As with such potentially plot spoiling information spoiler warnings apply so you'll have to highlight the news to read it. WebTV users, and other users incapable of highlight, view the printer friendly version above.

    Spoiler Warning (Highlight To Read)

While reading these various news reports some links between the various stories become apparent. However, this is not to say that these links confirm that the news is indeed true. Looking back at The World Is Not Enough it was often rumoured that the climax of the film would revolve around Bond saving the Millennium Dome from terrorist action. While the Millennium Dome did feature in ‘TWINE’, it featured under different circumstances. With that in mind, please read on.

“North Korea is the main villain in 20th 007 movie” (reported by Munwha Ilbo on November 30, 2001)

Hollywood has set North Korea as the main villain in the 20th 007 movie planned to begin production early next year, and is contacting Korean actors for the role of North Korean terrorists. There is controversy about whether Korean actors should appear in the movie or not.

According to Korean film industry insiders, MGM, which is producing 007 series, is planning to begin filming the 20th movie in the 007 series in January 2002.

The main actress, an essential element of 007 series, will be played by Halle Berry, who starred in “X-Men” and “Boomerang.” In the movie’s storyline, a North Korean special agent tries to kill a North Korea general who wants peaceful reunification of the two Koreas, and 007 gets engaed in a mortal fight with the North Korean agent in order to protect the general.

The North Korean agent will be portrayed as committing various acts of terrorism, such as trying to destroy the Great Britain’s Millennium Dome.

Currently, Min Soo Choi, Oh Sung Yu, Kang Ho Song, and Young Chul Kim are being mentioned as possible candidates.

These actors have one thing in common: they have all played North Korean soldiers at least once in their careers.

It has been known that the producers are currently conducting auditions through videotapes of the actors’ past works.

However, a source close to Min Soo Choi said that Choi has already refused to appear in the movie.

Even though this movie will have the positive effect of showcasing a Korean actor in a Hollywood production, there are opposing views as well.

That’s because this movie may directly disrupt the friendly mood between the two Koreas, which has been accomplished after a half century of division.

An insider working for a film production company said “There has been reports that the United States may choose North Korea as one of the targets in the second phase of their war against terrorism, so Korean actors should be very cautious when considering the offers for these roles.”

The report highlights correctly the potential damange which Bond 20, should it follow the rumoured plot detailed in this article, could cause. Hollywood has always had the power of influencing the real world, and it has always done so. However, it would seem safe to assume that should the Bond 20 plot resemble the rumoured plot it will have been carefully crafted as not to have an effect in the real world.

However, it also makes a mention of the destruction of the Millennium Dome and various terrorist activites. So soon after the tragic events of September 11 in the United States it seems unlikely that Bond 20 would deal with primarily terrorist activites.

007’s enemy is North Korea, will fight a North Korean agent in 20th movie, looking for Korean actors” (reported by Donga Ilbo on November 30, 2001)

In the 20th 007 movie that will begin filming early next month, North Korea has been chosen as the main villain.

An insider at the 20th Century Fox Korea, which distributes 007 movies in Korea, said, “In the next movie, North Korea will be featured as the enemy nation.”

Even though detailed story of the movie was not revealed, it is expected that 007 will go against a North Korean special agent who does not shy away from international terrorism.

MGM, which produces the series, is known to be looking for a Korean actor who will play the part of a North Korean military officer.

According to the Korean distributor, MGM contacted Fox Korea in March and inquired about Korean male actors who can speak English fluently.

The distributor said, “There were virtually no male actors who can speak fluent English in Korea, so we sent them a recommendation for ten top actors regardless of their English fluency.”

MGM is currently known to be contacting Korean actors based on this list.

Also, since North Korea has been chosen as the main villain, it became necessary to hire many Koreans as extras. An advertisement saying “We are looking for Korean extras for the next 007 movie” was placed in a Korean-language newspaper published in Great Britain, which is the backdrop of 007 series as well as its principal filming location.

This report seems a generalisation of all the reports we’ve heard so far. Onto another report,

Waiting for 007 final decision: Young Chul Kim has script” (reported by Munwha Ilbo on December 1, 2001)

47-year old actor Young Chul Kim, who showed great acting ability as Kung Yeh in the historical television drama “Wang Gun”, is said to be the frontrunner for the role of a North Korean general in charge of the North Korean special forces in the 20th 007 movie.

In a telephone interview with this newspaper, Kim said “Ten days ago, I received a script containing 10 minutes’ worth of dialogs in Korean language from the casting director while she was visiting Korea.” Kim also said “I heard that I was almost confirmed for the role, but I have not signed the contract yet.”

Kim showed cautious attitude by saying “It’s not good for this news to be known outside while I’m still waiting for the final decision.”

It has been known that the casting director has already been contacting Korean film industry insiders for the past several weeks in order to find Korean male actors who will play the important supporting roles of three North Korean military men.

When it was pointed out that this movie might interfere with the friendly mood between the two Koreas, Kim said, “Since the casting has not been finalized, I have not had the chance to thoroughly analyzed the story yet.”

    Yet another similair report, onto the next one;

Young Chul ‘Kung Yeh’ Kim to appear in 007 movie” (reported by Pusan Ilbo on December 1, 2001)

MGM, which is planning the 20th 007 movie that deals with North Korea, is actively seeking to cast Young Chul Kim in the role of a North Korean military man.

Sung Hoon Kim, president of Young Chul Kim’s management firm eStars, said, “Recently, MGM’s casting director has officially offered the role to Kim, along with giving him the storyboards, synopsis, and script of the movie.”

Sung Hoon Kim also said “Even though there were media reports that many top Korean actors were being contacted, Young Chul Kim is the only one who received script as far as I know. Even though this is a great opportunity for him, the movie’s concept has sensitive elements, and there has been almost no discussions about contract terms, so I cannot say my clear position about whether he will appear in the movie or not.”

He also said “It is true that we received the offer and we’re viewing it in positive terms. However, since nothing has been decided yet, I’d like to be cautious.”

In the 20th movie of the 007 series, a hardliner North Korean special agent tries to kill a moderate North Korean general who wants peaceful reunification of the two Koreas, and 007 fights the special agent in order to protect the general. It is scheduled to be released in November 2002.

    And the final report,

Young Chul Kim to appear in 007 movie” (reported by Chosun Ilbo on December 1, 2001)

Young Chul Kim, best known for his portrayal of Kung Yeh, will appear in the next 007 movie. Kim will play the role of a villain against Pierce Brosnan as James Bond in the 20th 007 movie, which will begin filming on January 14, 2002. Kim’s screen time will be around 10 minutes, which is close to being a bit player. However, Kim said, “Even the top Hong Kong actor Jet Li appeared as a villain against Mel Gibson in Lethal Weapon 4. I’m happy to work in a world class production.”

The title and storyline of MGM’s 20th 007 movie has not been officially announced yet. What’s known so far is that 007 will go against a North Korean soldier who commits acts of international terrorism. New Zealander Lee Tamahori will direct, and Halle Berry from X-Men will appear as a villainess.

Kim was considered for the role when MGM asked the Korean distributor last summer to recommend Korean actors who will play the part of North Korean special agent.

According to a source in Kim’s management firm eStars, the casting director watched the videotape of “Wang Gun” in which Kim played the role of Kung Yeh, and expressed extreme satisfaction. This source also said “The payment and contract terms are being negotiated.”

There are a lot of reports there with a lot of details, the similarities between the reports is quite obvious. As a result it's extremely hard to distinguish the rumours, the lies and the truth in all the rumours. To discuss them please visit the Bond 20 Forums in this thread which 'DreamLord' started for us. See you there!
