  1. Pre-Title Sequence To Be Shot At Maui

    By David Winter on 2001-12-26

Tim from 'All Time High – The 007 Generation, has alerted us of a report on StarBulletin. Most of the report contains spoilers, so please highlight to read.

    Spoiler Warning (Highlight To Read)

    The report reads:

A local camera crew and several surfers will be setting up shop at Jaws, Maui’s ferocious big-wave surf spot off the island’s northeast coast, for shooting the opening sequence of the as-yet-untitled MGM movie.

The secret project reportedly will feature five noted tow-in surfers. Jaws regular Laird Hamilton, who lives in Los Angeles, currently is in negotiations.

The Jaws opening is related to the film’s story line.

A six-member camera crew headed by noted Hawaii water photographer Don King, who is “director of photography, surf unit,” and surf videographer Sonny Miller, have been hired to film the giant waves using jet skis and speed boats.

The crew is scheduled to film surfing sequences for three days between Jan. 2 and 7, with the five-day window planned to ensure favorable wave conditions and footage, sources said.

King, Miller and several other camera crew members currently are working on the film “Surf Girls,” being shot on Oahu. That production takes a holiday break through early January, allowing the water photogs a chance to shoot the Bond sequence. Glen Beadles of Maui is coordinating the Maui water work.

The rest of the report outlines details that we have already heard. You can view the article here at StarBulletin.

This report is being discussed in this topic in the Bond 20 forums.

  2. Questions Surrounding Rick Yune's Role In Bond 20

    By daniel on 2001-12-25

The Korean newsapaper "Good Day" has questioned the Hollywood Reporter's reliability on information they published about the role of Rick Yune in Bond 20. According to the newspaper it seems that some guess work may have been involved in what the Hollywood Reporter published.

Plot and character elements from Bond 20 will be dealt with in this report so as usual Spoiler Warnings do apply. Simply highlight the text to read it.

    Spoiler Warning (Highlight To Read)

“The Hollywood Reporter” published a report stating that Rick Yune would be cast in Bond 20 as the character North Korean General Zao. As the time we assumed that General Zao was the 30 year old character that the film makers were seeking to cast. However, “Good Day” indicates that General Zao is in fact the 60 year old character and the father of the 30 year old character.

The North Korean General character, which has been one of the roles targeted for Korean actors from early stages, is supposed to be between the ages of 55 and 60. Rick Yune, who was born in 1971, will have a hard time playing the character convincingly.

    The surname Zao received some attention in the Bond 20 Forums with ‘Mister Asterix’ pointing out that Zao is not in fact Korean but Chinese. It is Mandarin for ‘Good Morning’ and is pronounced ‘zow’. This is something that “Good Day” picked up on;

Actually, the question begins with the “The Hollywood Reporter” article’s use of the phrase “North Korean General Zao.” “Zao” is not a Korean surname, but a common Chinese name.

North Korea, with its focus on nationalism, is not likely to express the name of a military general, one of its top powerholders, in Chinese terms. Even more importantly, “Zao” is actually the name of the male assassin character in his early 30’s, which is another role for a Korean actor.

“Good Day” seems to have insider knowledge that Zao is in fact the male assassin who is seeking to stop re-unification of North and South Korea.

The North Korean General character must be fluent in English. However, the roles for actors in their early 30’s, which are the General’s son/the North Korean military officer character and North Korea special agent/assassin character, do not require a high level of proficieny in English. The assassin “Zao” character, especially, is a mostly action-oriented role, so he has virtually no dialog.

Despite wanting a fully Korean actor for the role it seems that the producers have changed their mind. Earlier it was reported that the Yune’s character would under go a face transformation thanks to some technology. Rick Yune’s agent in Korea has commented on both Yune appearing in Bond 20 and the face transformation plot device.

“As far as I know, Rick Yune is confirmed to appear in the next Bond movie.” Chung added, “Initially, the plan was to have a Korean actor in the movie for about 15 minutes, and after the character undergoes facial transformation, an American actor was supposed to take over the role. However, since it was difficult to find a Korean actor who is satisfactory in both language skills and recognizability areas, Rick Yune was chosen to play the character by himself.”

As Yune is American born it is easy to see why the producers would rather cast one fluent actor for a role rather than two. However, that hardly seems interesting compared to the plot information revealed there; if true. Why would a Korean assassin be making attempting to transform his looks into that of an American?

While the article itself doesn’t clearly highlight it ‘DreamLord’, who kindly translated the article, has told us that the overall tone of the original article indicates that Yune is playing ‘Zao’ who is the assassin.

A great report from "Good Day", it will be interesting to see if any of this turns out to be true in the end. One can't help think about how many reports the media circulates that simply aren't true. However, we have learnt in the past that some elements of truth do appear in some reports. During the production of The World Is Not Enough it was reported that the climax of the film would take place at the Millennium Dome with James Bond stopping it being blown up, while that never happened part of the film did take place at the Dome.

  3. Bond's Journey Down The Thames, Part 1

    By daniel on 2001-12-23

Author of James Bond's London Gary Giblin has been nice enough to create this exclusive report for CommanderBond.net on the filming of the Pre-Title Sequence in The World Is Not Enough. All of this material comes from James Bond's London, and as you'll read below, it has been shortened for Internet purposes. To read the full material which I do strongly advise, you'll have to get your hands on James Bond's London from Spy Guise.

I'd like to thank Gary for all the help he has offered on the matter. Stay tuned for more exciting information on James Bond's London. I'd also like to thank David Williams from BondPix for supplying the photos for this article, it's greatly appreciated.

Also stay tuned for Part 2 of this report, coming soon to CommanderBond.net.

    JAMES BOND’S LONDON

Prepared especially for CommanderBond.net by Gary Giblin

As a film location buff, especially a London film location buff, I was thrilled to learn in early 1999 that the British capital was to feature prominently in the opening of The World Is Not Enough. Fortunately, I had contacts at both the London Film Commission (which helped coordinate the shoot) and on the production itself, so I could accurately detail the film’s amazing pre-credit boat chase for the book James Bond's London. Here, exclusively for CommanderBond.net, I have excerpted portions of the book for readers who would like to retrace Bond’s hectic ride down the Thames, and through the city’s historic Docklands.

Note that the book itself contains detailed directions to all sites.

River Thames and TWINE Boat Chase Route

Although generally thought of as “London’s river”, Britain’s longest and most famous waterway actually rises in the Cotswalds, Gloucestershire, and meanders eastward through six southern counties (and several Bond locations in Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire) before it finally reaches the North Sea some 210 miles later… The Thames is … shown in the films Dr. No, From Russia With Love, Goldfinger, For Your Eyes Only and, most dramatically, in The World Is Not Enough. In the latter, the river provides the setting for the spectacular pre-credit boat chase, which begins at MI6 and Vauxhall Bridge, after Cigar Girl’s assassination of Sir Robert King and attempted assassination of Bond himself. Bond launches the new, but unfinished, Q Boat from the bomb-damaged Secret Service HQ, while Cigar Girl speeds off in the sleek Sunseeker Hawk 34, customized with a one-of-a-kind machine gun and mortar-launchers. The two boats pass a number of riparian landmarks at a relatively leisurely pace, including: the Tate Gallery, MI5, the Houses of Parliament, Westminster Bridge and Victoria Embankment. Then, in rapid sequence, the chase encompasses Hungerford Bridge (23:1), TS Queen Mary, Waterloo Bridge, Waterloo Pier, Tower Bridge and St Saviour’s Dock. From here the action continues out of the river itself, first in Docklands, East London (Millwall Docks, Royal Victoria Dock, West India Docks and Tobacco Dock), then at the Historic Dockyard in Chatham, Kent. Bond finally returns to the Thames at Trinity Buoy Wharf, then follows Cigar Girl to the Millennium Dome in Greenwich for the explosive climax of the sequence.

    MI6 (1994-present)
    Vauxhall Cross
    85 Albert Embankment, SE1

… This “theatrically ominous” post-modern marvel, designed by Terry Farrell and said to have cost nearly $500,000,000, has been described as everything from an “architectural landmark” to a gaudy “Aztec or Mayan temple”. Either way, Vauxhall Cross is hard to miss… The striking green and beige-colored exterior … appears briefly in the film GoldenEye (the first time that the location of James Bond’s Secret Service coincided with that of the actual Secret Service), as well as in the pre-credit sequence of The World Is Not Enough. In the former, the shot is from Vauxhall Bridge, in the latter from Millbank, on the other side of the river. A red double-decker bus–the sine qua non of London establishing shots–crosses the bridge on both occasions. Later TWINE shots–of the explosion and Q Boat launch–utilized John Richardson’s magnificent quarter-scale replica, which at over 80 feet in length can scarcely be called a “miniature’! The dozen or so interiors, including M’s and Moneypenny’s offices, “Q Division” [sic], the security area and several corridors, were, of course, designed by Peter Lamont and built at Pinewood Studios (JBB).

    Westminster Bridge
    SW1, SE1

This extra-wide cast-iron structure (its 84-ft width was considered exceptional at the time) may be seen in the establishing shot of the Houses of Parliament (27:18) in Goldfinger; when Bond’s helicopter passes the Houses of Parliament in the For Your Eyes Only pre-credit sequence; and as Bond overtakes Cigar Girl at–where else?–the Houses of Parliament in the TWINE boat chase. (Look for several shots of the bridge’s light green arches in the latter.) It is, without a doubt, the best place in London from which to view the Palace of Westminster.

    Hungerford Bridge
    WC2, SE1

The Hungerford, also known as the Charing Cross Railway Bridge, marks the turning point of the Thames (see Charing Cross Station), and may be spotted as the top-most of the three bridges in the magnificent aerial shot near the beginning of the TWINE boat chase. It also marks the spot where Cigar Girl swerves to cut off Bond, splashes him and ends up crashing into Waterloo Pier, which is in fact located next to Waterloo Bridge, not Hungerford Bridge. This sequence occurs immediately after the pair pass beneath Westminster Bridge, which is, in fact, more than a quarter of a mile upriver. Those boats really do travel fast! See the next entry for the “missing” Queen Mary footage, which would have “linked” the bits at Hungerford and Waterloo Bridges.

    TS Queen Mary

    Victoria Embankment, WC2

Commissioned as a Scottish pleasure steamer in 1933, TS Queen Mary was converted to a restaurant and conference center in the 1980s. The ship, along with a number of other Thames-side landmarks, was to have been featured in the pre-credit sequence of The World Is Not Enough. Specifically, after being cut off by Cigar Girl at Hungerford Bridge, Bond was to have maneuvered the tiny Q Boat past Cleopatra’s Needle and then through the narrow gap between the Queen Mary and Victoria Embankment, emerging unscathed on the other side of Waterloo Bridge. Though actually staged and filmed, this sequence was ultimately cut for time. Thus, in the finished film, the action skips immediately from the Hungerford to the Waterloo Pier bit. However, if you look closely, you can spot the Queen Mary in the background, under Waterloo Bridge, as Cigar Girl smashes into the pier.

    Waterloo Bridge

    WC2, SE1

Waterloo Bridge is a great place from which to view the heart of London, with the Houses of Parliament just upriver, and the City just downriver. It is also a good place from which to survey both the TS Queen Mary and Waterloo Pier, two locales featured in the TWINE pre-credit boat chase. Waterloo Bridge itself provides a nice punctuation mark for the scene, as Cigar Girl smashes through the nearby floating shelter (see the next entry) with one of the bridge’s massive piers in the background. The high angle shot of the boats continuing downriver was taken from the bridge itself.

    Waterloo Pier
    Victoria Embankment, WC2

Until November 1998, this was one of only two floating police stations in the world, the other being in Hong Kong. Waterloo Pier now serves as a mooring point and rest stop for the patrol craft of the Thames Division of the Metropolitan Police Service, whose headquarters is in Wapping High Street. In April 1999, the Met kindly obliged when the makers of The World Is Not Enough wanted to destroy the pier for the film’s pre-credit boat chase. In fact, what Cigar Girl’s Sunseeker smashed through was a small, breakaway “shelter” that the filmmakers added just for the occasion. To ensure that the wood, glass and polystyrene building disintegrated on cue, small explosive charges were placed beneath the windows and detonated at the moment of the boat’s impact. Supervising art director Neil Lamont explained that the original choice for this stunt was Charing Cross Pier, just upriver. However, when he and location manager Richard Sharkey went there on a recce, they happened to spot the Queen Mary and Waterloo Pier just downriver, and decided that the juxtaposition of the ship, bridge and pier might make for a more interesting set-up. Second-unit director Vic Armstrong agreed and the stunt was subsequently staged at the new location.

Unfortunately, as noted in previous entries, much of this sequence ended up on the cutting room floor. Also shot here at the Waterloo Pier location was The Golden Salamander tourist boat, which pulled away just as Cigar Girl smashed into the pier. This bit, too, was deleted.

That's all from Part 1 so look out for Part 2, coming soon! In Part 2 Gary will take us to St Saviour’s Dock, Millwall Docks, Royal Victoria Dock, West India Docks, Canary Wharf, Blackwall Basin, Tobacco Dock, Trinity Buoy Wharf and finally to The Millennium Dome where the Pre-Title Sequence from The World Is Not Enough climaxed!

And don't forget, for the ultimate guide to the TWINE Pre-Title Sequence or many other Bond related locations from James Bond stop by Spy Guise and check out Gary Giblin’s James Bond's London.

  4. Spy Report: The Opening Scenes Revealed

    By daniel on 2001-12-23

Tim007, webmaster of All Time High, has told users of the Bond 20 Forums that a source of his has revealed to him certain information about the Bond 20 Opening Scenes. To avoid confusion, the opening scenes occur after the Title Sequence.

As the source is not our own we cannot gaurntee authenticity of the material, however, we can say that we have no reason to doubt Tim007. People sensitive to film spoiler information may not wish to read this report. However, I will stipulate that it reveals no plot information. Despite this you must highlight the news to read it and the commentry.

    Spoiler Warning (Highlight To Read)

Bond 20 will start with a scene quite similar to “For Your Eyes Only”. First, we’ll see the text “In memory of Desmond Llewelyn” at the end of the opening credits- Than we’ll see Bond and other MI6 allies on the funeral of Major Boothroyd, on a huge graveyard.

Well I personally hope this news is true, the first part as well. After such a long standing involvement with the James Bond series it is only right for Bond 20 to be dedicated to Desmond Llwelyn. However, I can see an arguement against the funeral of Major Boothroyd. Is it necessary to kill the character off? Wouldn’t it be possible to just mention that he’s retired from the Secret Service? The World Is Not Enough hinted at his retirement. And afterall, while Major Boothroyd could never again appear on screen if he is killed off it makes it less realistic to have the character return in the literary novels written by authors such as Raymond Benson.

Tim007 has also posted further information suggesting that the scene doesn’t invovled all that much action, if any; “I can tell you that it won’t end in an action sequence or any chase.”. At least the funeral of Major Boothroyd will be a quiet affair. Tim007 points out that the scene ends and the next scene begins in M’s Office at MI-6 Headquarters.

It's food for thought, and it's all a matter of personal opinion realistically. If you'd like to discuss this news please head over to the Bond 20 Forums and discuss it in this thread which Tim007 recently started.

  5. More On Halle Berry's Character

    By daniel on 2001-12-22

John007 sends us in this small report on Halle Berry's character 'Jinx' through the Bond 20 Forums:

On Friday December 21st, Halle Berry appreared on the American Late Night Talk Show "The Late Show with Jay Leno" Their conversation started off with Jay saying that she was just in London for 'lunch' and asked why, where she responded "For the next James Bond Movie". She went on to say that her name was Jinx. Jay then asked:

JAY:"Are You a Bad Bond Girl?"

HALLE: "Lets put it like this-she could kick some butt!"

    APPLAUSE

HALLE:"She's tough, she's not a winpy Bond woman, she's pretty fiesty!"
And that was the end of their conversation about Jinx.

This gives a bit more about her character, but not much!

    Thanks for the report John007!

  6. Some Small Details On Rosamund Pike

    By daniel on 2001-12-20

Sadly it's proving extremely difficult to find information of Rosamund Pike, however, we are trying.

What we have managed to discover:

    – She speaks English, French and German giving her character many possibilites.

    – According to the IMDb (not always the most accurate source) she was born in January 1979, meaning she'll turn 23 during the filming of Bond 20.

Thanks to Brett McAleer for helping with the research. We'll let you know more as we find it.

  7. Gala Brand To Be Character In Bond 20

    By daniel on 2001-12-20

This news just breaking, and you've read it here first.

A character from Ian Fleming's "Moonraker", Gala Brand, will make an appearence in Bond 20 the Official Site has just confirmed. In Fleming's novel Brand was Hugo Drax's secretary.

One can speculate on the role of Brand in Bond 20 quite easily with that knowledge. Spoiler Warning (Highlight To Read) In the novel her character is actually an undercover agent for Scotland Yard and is investigating Drax. She is the main Bond girl of the novel.

Could we see a similair character with Brand in Bond 20? It’s quite possible. After all, we know that Halle Berry’s character will be a Bad Bond girl and there does have to be a good one, leaving the position open for Brand.

The role will be played by British actress Rosamund Pike. Pike has only appeared in one film to date, A Rather English Marriage, but has mainly been seen on the stage. While she has played Juliet in Romeo And Juliet at the Bloomsbury Theatre she has also played at the Oxford Playhouse and at the Globe in Tokyo.

Rosamund Pike Photo's Are Hard To Find You Know

The official site has also confirmed that Halle Berry will be appearing in Bond 20 as a character named Jinx. It has promised information on the character in the coming weeks.

Also provided is this picture of Lee Tamahori on location. But where? Please speculate in this thread of the Bond 20 Forums.

Interestingly enough the news on the official site is dated the 22nd of December, 2001. Was it accidently released early, today is after all only the 20th of December.

Please discuss this news in the Bond 20 Forums in this thread which has been started to discuss the role of Gala Brand in Bond 20.

  8. More On Halle Berry's And Rick Yune's Characters

    By daniel on 2001-12-19

We've managed to find more information on the characters that both Halle Berry and Rick Yune will play in Bond 20, assuming the latter does actually sign to star in the film.

To being with, Halle Berry has revealed information about her character in an interview with Sci Fi Wire. Spoiler Warning (Highlight To Read) “Berry said of her character, “I’m nobody’s girlfriend. That’s all I know.”, which appears to be a direct reference to her statement that her character will be the bad Bond girl in Bond 20. Berry has also said she'd like to have a character with an ineteresting feature. Xenia Onatopp had her killer thights and Rosa Klebb had her spiked shoes, so what could Jinx have? Berry suggest a killer tongue. "I think I'd have a tongue that could choke [people]." Maybe not.

You can discuss Berry's statements in this thread of the Bond 20 Forums. Thanks to 'Level007' for the tip-off about the news!

Moving on to Rick Yune's role in Bond 20. 'DreamLord' has told us that Kyunghyang Sinmun, a major Korean daily newspaper, ran an article about Rick Yune last week. Spoiler Warning (Highlight To Read) The article reported that Yune will place a “North Korean terrorist [in Bond 20] who is against the peaceful reunification of the two Koreas.” However, the aritlce has stated that Yune is yet to sign up and "will refuse the role if he doesn't like his character or the screenplay, which is currently being rewritten."

It's interesting to see talk of the script being re-drafted. Most Bond films have gone through several drafts before filming. All that is left to be discovered is who is writing the new draft. You can discuss this news in this thread of the Bond 20 Forums. See you there!

  9. Rick Yune Tipped As Bond 20 Cast Member

    By daniel on 2001-12-18

The Hollywood Reporter has reported that American-born actor Rick Yune, star of The Fast And The Furious, will star in Bond 20 as the films villain. And I'll be the first to admit, it's not the first time the stars name has come across my desk. However, it was my understanding that Yune was out of the casting race. Things may have changed.

The appeal of Yune is that he is of Korean descent, needless to say mass-Korean connections have been reported for Bond 20. The very first of which indicated that Halle Berry was to have a role in Bond 20, something we now know to be true.

The Hollwood Reporter has revealed what could possibly be a part of the plot for Bond 20. For that reason, you'll have to highlight the next segment of this report to read it. Web TV users please use the print feature above to read the report.

    Spoiler Warning (Highlight To Read)

    From the article;

Although the script is being kept tightly under wraps, it is known that the story involves a device enabling facial mutation. Yune will star as a North Korean general named Zao, who is being tracked by Bond (Pierce Brosnan).

Yune will don facial prosthetics for the part as his character comes across the mutating device and begins to undergo facial transformation. But the experiment goes awry, leaving him half-changed.

A very strange plot element, however, if true I’d highlight it only as an element. There is no way that Bond 20 would be invovled solely around a mutation device, there has to be a deeper mystery involved.

Despite this it’s interesting to note the similarities between this plot outline and the Korean reports indicating the involvement of a Korean general. It would be assumed that Yune would appear as the character described as in his 30’s, the son of a General. However, it’s been reported that this character will also be a part of the North Korean military, however, his rank has not been reported.

Is Rick Yune to be cast in Bond 20? I'd say it's a strong possibility. As I've already said this news has come across my desk before now. Also it coincides perfectly with what the Korean rumours have indicated. The Korean rumours did indicate that Halle Berry would be the Bond girl, which we now know to be true, throwing credibility on the rest of the news reported at the time.

If you'd like to discuss any part of this news, or read the full report from The Hollywood Reporter, please visit the Bond 20 Forums where MKKB has started this thread about the news. See you there!

Finally a big thanks to Andrew for sending in the article.

  10. Halle Berry Bond 20 Fanart

    By daniel on 2001-12-15

With Halle Berry now being confirmed in Bond 20, Rory Couper has taken the opportunity to issue a small piece of Bond 20 Fanart featuring Berry.

    Thanks Rory!

    UPDATE:

Here's a coloured version of the picture by Rory – again, great work!
