    Charlie Higson’s Double or Die

Since its original release on 4 January, Charlie Higson’s newest Young Bond novel, Double or Die is now in its second print run.

In comparison to Higson’s other Young James Bond adventures, Blood Fever was in its second printing in the UK within two weeks of its release. A second printing of SilverFin came out simultaneously with the first in order to correct the date error that was first discovered on CBn.

  2. First Looks Part V: The Once and Future Bond

    By Guest writer on 2007-01-29

    An Article by Ed
    Harris

    GoldenEye (1995)

130 minutes-Starring Pierce Brosnan, Izabella Scorupco, Sean Bean and Famke Jannsen Directed by Martin Campbell

After a spell of legal troubles, the time had come for a new James Bond film and a new James Bond. After Dalton stepped aside, the role went to Pierce Brosnan…and Bond was back for good.

    The Film In General

GoldenEye is a big, bold reintroduction to the world of 007 after a six year hiatus. It starts off with a spectacular teaser that gives us a breathtaking dam jump and a cool closing stunt as well. Talk about getting your money’s worth! First Looks - Part V: GoldenEyeBrosnan gets the “movie star” intro Dalton received and then some. After ten minutes of unrestrained action and a great main title sequence, coupled with an equally great title song, we are soon immersed back into the character of Bond. If Dr. No spent a great deal of time establishing who Bond is; GoldenEye spends an equal amount of time reminding us. For the first twenty seven minutes or so of the film we are with Bond for virtually every scene with the exception of the intro to Xenia Onatopp’s rather… enthusiastic form of murder.

Granted this might seem superfluous since Bond is a fairly difficult fellow to forget once you’ve met him but I honestly have to admire a movie willing to put over an hour between major action set pieces, especially these days where you get some action films cut so quickly it really makes you wonder why the hell they bothered filming the entire sequence to begin with.

Gripes about the current state of action films aside, GoldenEye does a wonderful job of simply letting the story unfold while reintroducing us to James Bond. Pierce Brosnan is James BondI especially like that while the world has changed, Bond is still the same cocky womanizer with razor sharp instincts and lethal cunning. Plus, the rather leisurely pace of the movie serves the real plot of the film (Bond finding a place in the modern world, something which had been debated in reality as the film was being made) which as our own John Cox has written in another article on the site, is really more about the character of James Bond than it is about seducing beautiful spies, nifty gadgets and everything getting blown up real good… though we naturally get that too.

The plot in general is a nice one, unlike other debuts for new Bonds the producers decided to have a rather over the top storyline (I put the OHMSS story as low key since it’s almost secondary to the romance plotline in the film and LALD and TLD are basically Bond investigating threats to one specific region) in 006’s plans for the GoldenEye satellite. Sean BeanThe execution of the plan at Severnaya is well done, with the exception of the Boris Grishenko character who just annoys me to no end. Although, he does get a very satisfying death scene at the end so I can be more forgiving on this point.

Better done is Natalya, the best of the Brosnan Bond Girls and the only one who isn’t either required to be especially talented. She knows computers but it doesn’t go past what she’s trained for. Izabella Scorpuco is gorgeous, does well with the role and is quite likable. Another good touch of the Severnaya sequence is Xenia’s orgasmic reaction to the killing she does. It’s an amazingly over the top moment that lets you know exactly how psychotic this woman is but also very funny.

The MI6 sequences do a great job of showing how the world has changed since we last saw Bond. Izabella ScorupcoThe setup is more high tech and Bond dealing with a female M is entertaining as is Moneypenny’s joking remarks about sexual harassment. It works well without bashing us over the head with it (though I can certainly see how it could be seen differently).

With Bond finally on the case, we get a milestone in the series as Bond actually enters Russia. His intro to Wade is a nice bit and Joe Don Baker provides a relaxed performance that makes the character far less annoying than he could have been. Another good performance comes from Robbie Coltrane who manages to make Zukovsky both threatening and funny. Bond’s ensuing confrontation with Xenia is entertaining as well as we get classic Bond cool mixed with Famke Janssen’s great work as one of the best Bond villains in a long time.

The reveal that 006 is not only still alive but also the main bad guy is well done though it would have worked better had the marketing department not revealed this twist in the main trailer for the film. Still, Sean Bean plays the role well, exuding a great sense of bitter menace that makes for a splendid villain.

From there, the film kicks into action mode and we get a nice shootout with an even better tank chase that leads to a great climax. The final fight between Bond and Alec is stunning in its intensity and viciousness and it caps off a great return for 007 and an excellent debut for Pierce Brosnan.

    Brosnan's Performance

A new decade brought us a new James Bond in Pierce Brosnan. I’ve always enjoyed Pierce’s take on the character. Granted it’s basically Connery’s coolness and Moore’s lighter touch with a dash of Dalton’s more serious tone but Brosnan does it quite well and presents a fine interpretation of the character.

While I feel he’s good throughout the film, there are three scenes that I really want to highlight.

After meeting up with Natalya, they are captured by Defense Minister Mishkin. While Bond is rather cavalier with Mishkin; that all changes when Orumov barges in. The physical change we see in Bond’s stature and demeanor is truly cool as Brosnan goes from being rather laid back to “Danger Mode” in the span of half a second. It’s very subtle but it works really well.

The beach scene with Natalya gives a good insight into the character of Bond. He knows he’s going to have to kill a former friend and in spite of it being justified, he still hates having to do it. Brosnan and Scorupco play the scene very well and make what could have been cheesy into an interesting bit of insight.

The final fight between Bond and 006, as I mentioned before is simply great. One of my favorite elements of it is that there’s no real rush to speak of as Bond has already foiled Alec’s plan in a wonderfully done, almost throwaway bit of business.

Brosnan captures who Bond should be and makes him work on every possible level. It’s a very good debut.

Well, that does it for the First Looks series, at least until Casino Royale comes out on DVD. I hope this has been an interesting series to read.

  3. James Bond Costumes To Be Auctioned In March

    By Devin Zydel on 2007-01-29

The Sun and The Scotsman report that several film outfits will be auctioned off in March, including several dinner jackets from the James Bond films.

Prospective buyers will be allowed to try on Sean Connery’s dinner jacket from Thunderball, Roger Moore’s navy commander jacket from The Spy Who Loved Me and Pierce Brosnan’s Brioni suit from GoldenEye.

Connery’s dinner jacket is expected to receive bids of £40,000+ at the Bonhams event. Tim Angel, chairman of Angels (the company selling these outfits) called it a ‘ridiculous value. It’s because it’s Sean Connery, it’s because it was a dinner jacket and it’s because it was a Bond. I can’t explain it, I don’t set the prices.’

The sale will take place on 6 March.

  4. Casino Royale China Premiere – Video Report

    By Devin Zydel on 2007-01-29

CBn earlier reported today that the premiere of Casino Royale has taken place in Beijing, China. The BBC has released a video report covering the event, including a brief interview with Daniel Craig.

This is the first time a James Bond 007 film has been released in Chinese theaters, and Casino Royale managed to be approved with no cuts. A ‘good thing,’ said Craig, pleased that the film will be shown ‘in its entirety.’

However, the many pirated DVD copies did not go unnoticed. ‘Someone tried to sell me a copy last night,’ said Craig. ‘I was wearing a hat and glasses so they didn’t recognise me. I understand the reality of the situation and it saddens me, not just because of the effect it has on the movie industry but because going to the cinema is a great experience.’

‘You’re missing out by watching a bad copy of a DVD with no sound and bad picture quality. As far as I’m concerned cinema is a collective experience and you get 50 percent more by going to the cinema.’

  5. Casino Royale Premieres Today In China

    By Devin Zydel on 2007-01-29

The premiere of Casino Royale took place today in Beijing, China, the last international market for the film–reports the BBC and Reuters.

The event was attended by Daniel Craig, Eva Green, director Martin Campbell and producer Barbara Broccoli. Craig was reportedly ‘privileged’ to show his first James Bond film ‘in a country that I’ve been eager to visit for a long time.’

The film is being shown unedited throughout the country, according to Sony Pictures.

Campbell was also happy to see Casino Royale released uncut. ‘After 21 films, it’s obviously very significant, given that we are the first Bond film to be shown here,’ he said. ‘The fact that we got it through without any censor cuts at all seems to me to be some kind of achievement.’

‘I don’t think they mind the violence. It’s interesting that we had a tiny bit cut in England, and we had a little bit of the violence trimmed in America,’ he added.’

As previously reported by CBn, a second premiere of Casino Royale will take place in Shanghai on the 30th (the date of the general release as well). It will play on over 1,000 screens, the largest ever for a foreign film.

  6. Neal Purvis And Robert Wade Discuss 'Bond 22' Details

    By Devin Zydel on 2007-01-29

    ***Plot Spoilers***

With Casino Royale approaching the end of its astonishing run at the worldwide box office, more and more details and rumours are being revealed about the upcoming Bond 22, due for release in November 2008.

In an interview on The Trades, screenwriters Neal Purvis and Robert Wade (who worked on Casino Royale, Die Another Day and The World Is Not Enough) discussed the reception to Daniel Craig’s first James Bond film and revealed some details on Bond 22.

While discussing the many BAFTA nominations for Casino Royale, Purvis said: ‘We were very surprised by the nominations because it takes something for people to think of Casino Royale as just a good film and not a Bond film.’

‘Being nominated is a huge leap forward for a Bond movie,’ added Wade.

Comparing Bond to Craig’s reception with the press, Wade said: ‘Bond’s sort of struggling against the odds. What’s heroic and affecting about him is that he keeps going, even when everything is against him. So, in a way, it’s kind of like that’s what Daniel did in real life.’

The absense of Q and Miss Moneypenny from Casino Royale sparked much discussion amongst 007 fans. Wade commented on this, saying: ‘Some people think they should be there and some people know that they shouldn’t be there. With the way Casino Royale ends, you know there’s still unfinished business for Bond. He may say, “The name’s Bond, James Bond,” but there’s still a lot of stuff churning up inside him. So, if you’re going to explore that, and we’ve got this great actor to do that with, what you don’t want to do is suddenly clamp it down with all these familiar elements that keep your focus off him. He’s the great asset.’

According to Purvis, Moneypenny would be the easier of the two to incorporate. ‘Q presents more problems. People have all got gadgets now. Other films have lots of gadgets as well… The idea of Q coming back, for the moment, it’s just not a high priority.’

In mid-December, The Sun started a rumour that Ian Fleming’s short story Risico would provide the title and plot basis for Bond 22. ‘That’s not the case,’ said Wade. However, when asked about whether or not Vesper Lynd’s Algerian boyfriend would appear as one of the film’s villains, he simply said ‘I can’t comment.’

Finally, speaking on the timetable for Bond 22, Wade said: ‘The idea is for the movie to start shooting at the beginning of next year. It would be nice to have the draft next week (laughing). The sooner the better. It’s not an easy thing to do, because the bar was raised with the last picture, so we have to raise our game again.’

  9. Casino Royale DVD Special Features Update

    By Devin Zydel on 2007-01-27

CBn had previously reported with details on the special features listing for the upcoming DVD release of Casino Royale.

Included in this listing were a few documentaries and featurettes and Chris Cornell’s ‘You Know My Name’ music video. This left many Bond fans expecting more; a commentary at the least. Unfortunately, DVD Active reports this will not be the case.

The special features listing for the two-disc DVD of Casino Royale is:

    • Becoming Bond: An intimate look at how Daniel Craig became the newest James Bond
    • James Bond For Real: A look at Casino Royale‘s action and stunts
    • Bond Girls Are Forever: A look at the leading ladies of the film
    • Chris Cornell ‘You Know My Name’ Music Video

Previous reports indicated the DVD would also include a ‘Death In Venice’ featurette as well as five news wraps, but these appear not be to included. Back cover art (with the special features listing) can be viewed here.

Unless there are further announcements regarding the special features, it appears that the Casino Royale DVD will be the first in the James Bond series to not feature an audio commentary.

The initial DVD release of Die Another Day contained over seven hours of special features, including two seperate audio commentaries: one with Michael G. Wilson and Lee Tamahori and the other with Pierce Brosnan and Rosamund Pike. According to the promotional flyer for Casino Royale, the DVD will contain only ’90 minutes of extras.’

  10. Eva Green Discusses Casino Royale, Bond, And Beyond

    By Devin Zydel on 2007-01-26

    Casino Royale‘s Eva Green

Many are already calling Eva Green’s Vesper Lynd one of the strongest leading ladies in the James Bond series. In a new interview with the Guardian, she discusses her work in Casino Royale as well as what the future holds.

Green explains how appearing in a Bond film wasn’t ‘beneath’ her: ‘In France, it’s just not a big deal, whereas here every man wants to be Bond. I just read the script and thought, “This is good.”‘

‘[Daniel Craig] got all the mad tabloids–I got nothing. Actually that’s not quite true. I got very angry when people kept asking me, “What’s it feel like to be a Bond girl?” As if I was soup.’

Green also mentioned she was happy not to appear nude in Casino Royale, saying: ‘I’ve been nude in a film before (The Dreamers) and found it very troubling, so I was quite glad not to be in this film. In [Casino Royale‘s] shower scene–you remember?–they wanted me to strip down to my panties. We had a good fight about that. I used to go to Daniel and ask for his support.’

When asked about her nomination for the BAFTA Rising Star award, Green said: ‘In France we have the Cesars, but I think the Baftas are much more serious. So when the nomination was for me in a Bond film, it’s a bit like a joke … I don’t believe in awards. It’s very good for the ego, I suppose.’

She recently finished filming Northern Lights, the first part of Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials, along with Daniel Craig and Nicole Kidman. As for what is next: ‘I have been in two big machines now and something a bit smaller scale would be nice. I want to work in England.’
