In comparison, the opening of Daniel Craig’s debut James Bond film was 6% better than The Da Vinci Code, which eventually grossed more than $13 million in the country.

Additionally, Casino Royale may benefit from an attendance spike in mid-February as a result of Chinese New Year celebrations.

The two premieres for the film took place in Beijing and Shanghai on Monday and Tuesday, respectively. Craig, Eva Green, director Martin Campbell, and producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli attended.

Casino Royale has grossed over $573 million worldwide–the 34th highest of all time.

  4. Daniel Craig Discusses Bond At Casino Royale's Shanghai Premiere

    By Devin Zydel on 2007-02-01

Casino Royale is slowly coming to an end in theaters, with the premieres in Beijing and Shanghai–the final two locations for the film–having taken place earlier this week.

Daniel Craig discussed a few details about how he takes on the role of James Bond, reports Shanghai Daily.

‘It’s pressure, but it’s good pressure,” says Craig on being compared to past 007 actors. ‘The experience of being cast in such an iconic role in film history is exciting and inspiring.’

‘Bond really falls in love this time. Apart from his courage and strength, we read his sweetness inside. I’m very keen to show people this unknown side. Maybe next time he will appear stronger but with a broken and closed heart.’

‘After taking every job, you just have to give your life to it,’ he says while explaining what the Casino Royale shoot required. ‘I committed myself to it during the six-month shooting. If you don’t get bruised playing Bond, you’re not doing the job properly.’

‘My ambition is to make the movie I like,’ he says. ‘I’m certainly going to try and get as much out of Bond’s aura as I can. This year I will make one or two films out of my personal interest. I just won’t stop working.’

  7. James Bond Film Costumes Go Under The Hammer

    By Devin Zydel on 2007-01-31

CBn earlier reported with details on an upcoming auction in March that would be featuring several costumes from the James Bond films, including Sean Connery’s dinner jacket from Thunderball.

Further details regarding the available 007 outfits have been released on the official Bonhams website:

Several outfits from James Bond 007, a fictional British agent created by writer Ian Fleming in 1952 will also be sold.

Outfits worn by Pierce Brosnan in three of the films he starred in from 1995 to 1999 will feature. From GoldenEye (1995) is Brosnan’s Brioni grey three piece-suit (£8,000-10,000), a similar blue suit (£5,000-6,000) and a cream linen suit (£8,000-10,000).

In GoldenEye, a new Bond for the 1990s was created, when Pierce Brosnan took over as 007. The long-established house of Brioni in Rome, supplied him with their famed look of style and elegance. Brioni has a stipulated way of tailoring their suits with a minimum of 185 steps to produce the finished article which creates an ageless fashion statement. The grey Brioni suit was used extensively throughout the film, most memorably in the scene between Alec Trevelyan and Bond in the disused communist statue park. A black dress, shoes and jacket, from GoldenEye as worn by Famke Jansen is estimated at £3,000-4,000.

In Tomorrow Never Dies (1997), Brosnan donned the Bond mantle again. Brosnan’s leather jacket, black roll neck sweater, black ski jumper and green combat trousers,(£8,000-10,000) and a blue cotton shirt, black sweat pants and blue canvas deck shoes (£4,000-5,000), as worn in the film, continue the Bond theme.

A ski suit worn by Brosnan (£6,000-8,000) and a wine coloured ski suit, with fur-lined hood, worn by Sophie Marceau (£1,200-1,500), will be sold, as well. These items featured in the third Brosnan instalment, The World is Not Enough (1999).

Outfits worn by Roger Moore – James Bond from 1973-1985 – include a navy battle dress jacket, complete with commanders epaulettes and inner pocket for the Walther PPK, (£3,000-4,000), made for The Spy Who Loved Me in 1977. This jacket was used in the finale of the film during the battle between Bond and the Stromberg operatives on the super-tanker.

In addition, a ‘false front’ for a Naval Commander’s jacket, from The Spy Who Loved Me is estimated at £800-1,200. The item features in the scene where Bond travels to Atlantis from the American submarine. The garment was used to give the impression that Bond is fully clothed under his wetsuit. Military berets, navy crew jackets and trousers, from The Spy Who Loved Me, as worn by the Stromberg crew, in the finale of the film, estimated at £800-1,000 can also be seen. A Showgirl outfit made for the circus girls in Octopussy (1983) ranges from £400-600 per item and a Drax personnel jumpsuit, from Moonraker (1979) is £800-1,200.

The sale will take place on 6 March.

  8. Martin Campbell Not Planning On 'Bond 22' Return

    By Devin Zydel on 2007-01-31

Back in July 2006, CBn reported that Martin Campbell was not planning to return to direct Bond 22.

While working on Casino Royale at the time, Campbell cited the monumental workload required as being one of the reasons he wasn’t planning on coming back for Daniel Craig’s second James Bond film.

In a recent interview during the premiere of Casino Royale in China, Campbell reaffirmed the point that he isn’t planning on returning, despite the worldwide success of the film.

The search for the Bond 22 director continues…

  10. Martin Campbell Disappointed Over Casino Royale Pirated DVDs

    By Devin Zydel on 2007-01-30

As previously reported by CBn, the premiere of Casino Royale took place in China yesterday. Attending the event were Daniel Craig, Eva Green, director Martin Campbell, and producer Barbara Broccoli. It is the first time a James Bond film has been officially released in the country.

The Washington Post reports that Campbell was understandably disappointed to find so many pirated DVD copies of Casino Royale already on the streets with the film just starting in theaters.

‘An awful lot of revenue is lost.’ as a result, said Campbell. ‘From my point of view as a director, the quality of what you get on the pirated DVD is often terrible, so it’s not the way I want my film to be seen.’

He told reporters he purchased a copy for about $1.30. ‘Unfortunately, my name wasn’t on the credits,’ he said with a laugh, when asked if he’d shown the street vendor his name on the DVD cover. ‘I think the credits were from The Fast and the Furious.’

‘Electronic editing and the way we process movies of course leaves [films] wide open to this… it’s a huge problem.’
