    By Devin Zydel on 2007-02-01

Variety reports that Casino Royale has opened strong in China, taking in $1.5 million at 470 playdates on the Tuesday opening.

In comparison, the opening of Daniel Craig’s debut James Bond film was 6% better than The Da Vinci Code, which eventually grossed more than $13 million in the country.

Additionally, Casino Royale may benefit from an attendance spike in mid-February as a result of Chinese New Year celebrations.

The two premieres for the film took place in Beijing and Shanghai on Monday and Tuesday, respectively. Craig, Eva Green, director Martin Campbell, and producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli attended.

Casino Royale has grossed over $573 million worldwide–the 34th highest of all time.
