  1. 'From Russia With Love:' The Jump Cut

    By Devin Zydel on 2006-08-03

In light of the release of the James Bond 007 ‘Ultimate Edition’ DVDs, the ending gondola scene of 1963’s From Russia With Love has gone under the microscope once more with some interesting results in regards to cuts and censorship.

In an article titled ‘The British Censorship of From Russia With Love’ on the website DVD Talk, Glenn Erickson looks at the film’s editing including the mysterious ‘bad edit’ in the gondola in the film’s final scene.

DVD Talk originally looked at the gondola scene’s cut article in 1997. That article descibed the cut as follow:

In the final scene of From Russia With Love Sean Connery and Daniela Bianchi are blithely Gondoliering on a Venetian canal (okay, okay, in front of a rear-projection of a Venetian canal) when Connery produces the 8mm roll of blackmail film taken by SMERSH in the Istanbul bridal suite. He holds the reel up to examine a length of it against the sunlight, and says. “He was right, you know.” Before Bianchi can answer, there is a really obvious cut. A new angle pops on with the actors in different positions and the dialog proceeds as if something substantial has been cut out. Matt Munro has been singing the title song in the background; the lyric jumps forward a few notes, indicating that maybe two or three seconds of film are missing.

The ’97 article asked for help explaining the cut and received two replies at the time. One was from Dale McFadzean, a member of the James Bond 007 International Fan Club. Dale wrote:

“…In the original edit of the scene, Sean Connery holds up the film and says, “He was right you know – what a performance!”, referring to his and Tatiana’s sexual exploits in the hotel. At the time it was thought that this piece of dialogue was a bit risque; and so it was cut. This is why there is a jump of a few seconds in the final scene.”

That is where it stood until DVD Talk was contacted by Gavin Salkeld who had researched From Russia With Love’s files of the British Board of Film Classification. The BBFC made From Russia With Love ‘the target of some pretty stringent censorship’. Gavin had found two key points that explain the cut which it turns out referred to another cut line.

    The earlier cut was this:

(From a list of 13 BBFC cuts)

    • 10) – Killer Red Grant (Robert Shaw) gets the drop on Bond in his compartment on the Orient Express. Grant’s remark “What a performance!” when he throws the compromising 8mm film reel at Bond is removed.

And the famous gondola scene cut:

    • 13) – Bond’s repeat of Red Grant’s quip, “What a performance!” as he examines the film reel in the Gondola, has been cut.

DVD Talk goes on to say, ‘Just to be clear, there is NO uncut version of this anywhere in the world.. From Russia With Love was quite an erotic film when new, and it’s interesting to know just how badly the censors beat it up.’

Great work by DVD Talk’s Glenn Erickson and by Gavin Salkeld who uncovered the BBFC’s files solving another great Bond mystery. One still wonders why this cut was made so poorly, but now at least we know.

Be sure to read DVD Talk’s entire From Russia With Love article which includes the complete 13 point BBFC cut list.

The official Casino Royale website blog has been updated by ‘Yarborough.’ Coverage this time centers on the main villain of the film: Le Chiffre, portrayed by Mads Mikkelsen.

The report tells how Le Chiffre will be a different kind of the villain in the James Bond film legacy. Mikkelsen says of the role: ‘He’s not the mad scientist who’s trying to take over the world but he’s trying to make as much money as possible, cheating everybody he can, which of course gives him a lot of enemies but he is a little more human than you probably normally would see in a Bond villain. He’s a man who has got a lot of greed, he just wants money in an easy way and that’s going to be his Achilles Heel in the end.’

  5. Pierce Brosnan On The 'The Matador' And James Bond

    By Devin Zydel on 2006-08-01

Pierce Brosnan, who starred most recently in The Matador (which saw DVD release in the US in July) spoke to Entertainment Wise about his movie roles, including James Bond.

He played one of the biggest movie icons in four hugely successful films, but in his latest film, a black comedy called ‘The Matador’, he plays a hitman who has really hit the skids.

“I think that all the films I’ve ever made are personal, even James Bond, because it’s so much of myself, so much of who I am as a man and as an actor. You have to invest yourself in every character that you portray’.

    …..

“There was only one Bond for me, and it was Sean Connery. That made the role daunting.”

    …..

“Bond is an enigma. He’s smooth and bigger than life, but he’s vague as a personality. It’s a little like doing a period piece. Look, I’m thankful, the role made me an international star. I’ve been in the backwaters of Papua New Guinea and heard, ‘Hey, Bond.'”

  9. Mads Mikkelsen On Playing Le Chiffre And Cards In Casino Royale

    By Devin Zydel on 2006-07-30

The Sunday Mail today reports on Mads Mikkelsen and his experiences during the Casino Royale filming, as well as how the cast got into gambling ‘in a big way.’

‘The cast got into gambling in a really big way.’

‘A lot of the film is set in a casino playing poker so we did that as research at first, then went to casinos to see how that works. And we became pretty good at it as a result.’

‘I like to think I got so good I wiped the floor with everyone but if you asked the rest of the cast they would say they did, too.’

‘It’s like a fishing tale – everyone remembers what they want. But I did get pretty good at it.’

Mads, who has been married to Hanne for 20 years, says he loved playing his evil role in the movie.

He said: ‘Le Chiffre was fantastic. Baddies are interesting, they are full of drama. There is something hidden that is appealing to everyone.’

Mads, who has two children, Carl and Viola, revealed his favourite Bond baddie of all time is Christopher Walken, who played Max Zorin in A View To A Kill.

He said: ‘Christopher is a fantastic villain and a fantastic good guy.’

‘He’s got dualism, which is what it takes to be a good villain – there is something likeable and unlikeable about him at the same time.’

The Dane said he did not have to do much preparation before putting on the Bond baddie mantle.

He went on: ‘If you play a dentist and 80 per cent of your acting is going to be in a dentist’s office then you are obviously going to research how to drill teeth but in this case the research was basically in the script.’

‘I just had to find a character we all liked that was subtle and icy.’

Mads also revealed how he enjoyed dressing up in his character’s expensive clothes.

He said: ‘My make-up made me look slightly different, as Le Chiffre has a blind eye. He is vain and wears expensive clothes and just wearing that made a big difference.’

‘Setting my hair and being very neat about the set was fun and I looked forward to getting into costume.’

Mads, who also stars as Tristan in King Arthur with Keira Knightley, made the Bond writers add in extra action scenes for him.

He said: ‘I got the part and I read the script and thought, ‘Where’s my action?”

‘I am an ex-gymnast and I have been doing stunts all my life so they added more just for me. I have a scene where I gave Daniel a hard time, and I have a scene where someone is giving me a hard time. I didn’t get to drive cars over cliffs, sadly!’

Like past villains Jaws, Blofeld and Oddjob, Le Chiffre is sure to be a hit with the kids and Mads’ son Carl is already more than impressed with his dad’s latest acting job.

He was delighted to star opposite Daniel Craig who, he believes, makes the perfect James Bond.

Mads said: ‘Daniel is a brilliant actor, he is perfect for the part. Bond has been around for many years and this Bond needed a very strong actor.’

‘Daniel looks like a guy who can kill people with his bare hands and this is the character. He was fantastic, and you could work with him.’

Mads admitted he never watched the original 1967 Casino Royale and has never read the book. He said: ‘I haven’t seen the original film, and I didn’t read the book. I have done several films based on books and I never read them or saw the film.’

‘This is this script and this film -this is to do with the director, the script and what I come up with.’
