  1. Surfing for 007

    By Luke Freeman on 2002-08-09

Hello once again surfers, boogie borders and beach bums alike. Get out your swimmers, slap on some sunscreen, pack the picnic basket, dust off your surfboard and head frantically for the beach. Why? Because today we’re going surfing. Now if you’ve gotten out all that beach equipment like I told you to, then put it all back, because we’re not going to do that type of surfing, this is internet surfing. Since this is a 007 site I am apparently obligated to make my articles somewhat James Bond related (damn, there goes the pig shooting piece I was planning), so ofcourse the object to todays surfing will be to find the best of Bond on the net. Now touring all the Bond tribute pages, reading all the reviews, looking at the same pictures that the sites all stole from eachother (God bless the right mouse button) would take far, far too long. Instead, I’m going to give you a guided tour of the sorts of Bond related things you can by buy the world wide web, so get your credit cards ready, because we’re going shopping. Here a few must have items for your 007 collection…

007 Action Figures – Bond action figures are, for some unknown reason, very popular among 007 collectors. I can’t figure out why exactly, because from what I’ve seen the figures barely resemble the character they are supposed to be, have crappy accessories, and they have a nasty, cheap, rushed, knockoff feel about them. Certainly they can’t compete with the glossy, rich, Batman figures and such. I’ve hardly seen Bond figures for sale at stores, the internet seems to be the place to buy them and then show off about your collection. But unfourtunately I found no official Bond action figure site, therefore no way for fans to offer ideas about new action figures. My ideas for new action figures include a Roger Moore figure with “judo chop” action, and a Rosa Kleeb that comes with those famous thick rimmed glasses. But sadly, my innovative suggestions are destined never to be read.

007 Lunch Box – All you kids out there can soon be the envy of your schoolyard chums with an authentic 007 lunch box. A yellow, breakable piece of plastic with a mediocre handle and a Bond related sticker slapped on the front in an attempt to justify the $15 price tag. But as usual with Bond related goodies, its not exclusive to the kiddies, adults are more than welcome to join the party. Imagine strolling into your next board meeting, your briefcase in one hand and your plastic 007 lunchbox in the other, a first class ticket to a promotion if you ask me.

007 Illegally Imported DVD Collection – Why pay up to $300 for the entire James Bond DVD collection with crisp, clear picture, numerous extras, individual disks, and three glossy collector boxes, when you can hop onto the internet and get hold of an illegal knockoff of the whole set crammed on five disks for 50 bucks? I ask you, who wants quality when instead you can support those illegal Japanese sweat shops? For just $50 you get the full collection on five disk, in a single case with dodgy, second hand cover art and all the text in a Foreign Language. If your lucky, some of the films will come with English subtitles, and as for the ones that don’t, well I’ve always thought that not being able to understand what’s being said adds to the fun. If your bid is successful, don’t be suprised if the seller wants to do the trade “at midnight outside the docks”.

007 Rubber Bands – I kid you not ladies and gentlemen, I kid you not. Official James Bond rubber bands, suitable for all your rubber band related needs. How did these come to be? Well, you see, back in the sixties they had no shame, and the James Bond cash cow was milked for all she was worth, and was subsequently bone dry for most of the early seventies. Rubber bands weren’t the only unsuspecting item to have a 007 logo planted on them. Vodka, toy cars, shirts, shorts, underpants, pens, clocks, puzzles, even spoons got the same treatment. Ofcourse with official items comes the dodgy, shameless rip offs, and the market was flooded with crappy products starring Agent 0007, Agent 0077, Agent 707, and last but not least, Agent 747.

007 Fake Autographs – Fake signatures seem to the be the collectable of the new millennium, and are perhaps becoming more sort after than real signatures. It’s become a real talking point about how people are selling autographs of Desmond Llewelyn and Bernard Lee on products that weren’t made until after their passing. Then there’s posters signed by actors who weren’t even in the film in question. Only on the internet could you get a DAD poster signed by the entire cast and Michelle Yeoh. That’s right, now actors don’t have to be in the particular film to sign a poster, there just has to be a rumour of them being in it at some stage, any stage. The more I think about, the more I feel that fake signatures are the way to go, you should make it your mission in life to have fake signatures of all five Bonds, I know I have.

It’s a wonder virtual world out there, endless avenues to explore, and this is just the merchandising side. One feels that we haven’t even touched the surface of 007’s presence on the internet as a whole. But no matter how much Bond there is on the world wide web, it’s not enough. So sign up for some allocated web space, steal some programming books from your local library, and create your own webpage shrine to 007, so that you can add to the joy that people get, when they are surfing for 007.

    Until next time,

    Freemo

  2. Next Batch Of Flemings To Be Released January 2003

    By daniel on 2002-08-09

The next batch of the Ian Fleming Penguin reprints are due to be released in January 2003 according to the publishing company.

While covers have not yet been revealed, Penguin have revealed that the three novels in the batch will be Moonraker, From Russia With Love and Diamonds Are Forever.

  3. Jinx To Receive Bond Treatment As Well

    By daniel on 2002-08-08

It seems that Halle Berry's character of Jinx will also receive the Bond treatment in Die Another Day. That's according to Lee Tamahori, who is continuing to emphasise Die Another Day's raunchier sex theme.

Empire Online have talked with Tamahori who told how he approached Pierce with the idea, 'We said, "Pierce, what do you feel about being in the first Bond movie where you get laid?" And he said, '"that'd be smashing!" So we did that. We've got Pierce Brosnan and Halle Berry bonking away.'

Of course, Lee has earlier conceded that the scene, and another with Miranda Frost, may not make it into the final cut of the film. The final word rests with the films censors. And should they decide to cut it? Well, let just hope that when Die Another Day comes to DVD it includes some good extras, like deleted scenes. Wouldn't that be a novelty!

  4. Signing Event Hints At Possible Premier Attendees

    By daniel on 2002-08-07

'Memoribilia', Europe's largest collectors fair, was recently held in Birmingham with guests John Glen and Caroline Munro in attendance. In the past the event has attracted other big Bond names including Valerie Leon, Shirley Eaton and Desmond Llewellyn.

Stuart, who attended the event, has written in to tell us that flyers, advertising the next 'Memoribilia', were being handed out.

The next event, to be held in Birmingham on the 16th and 17th of November this year, will be a Bond Special according to the advertising. Star Signings will include George Lazenby, Richard Keil, Maud Adams, Lois Chiles, Eunice Gayson and Valerie Leon with more yet to be confirmed.

So what does this have to do with Die Another Day? Well a lot of those Bond celebrities don't live in the United Kingdom, so they may be in the UK for something a little bit bigger than 'Memoribilia'. And what's bigger than the premier of Die Another Day at the Royal Albert Hall on November 18.

It seems almost a foregone conclusion that these Bond stars, and many others, will be in attendance at the premier!

Thanks to Stuart for sending in the news!

  5. Bond 21’s Aston Martin Revealed?

    By daniel on 2002-08-06

When Aston Martin signed to have the Aston Martin V12 Vanquish in Die Another Day they signed a three-film contract, so you can expect to see an Aston Martin in Bond 21 and Bond 22.

Well it seems we may have just gotten our first glimpse of Bond 21’s Aston Martin thanks to three Spy photos.

The above photo is of Aston Martin’s latest car (still in development), currently codenamed AM305. It is the car tipped as being the next Aston Martin DB5.

The DB5 is a smaller car than any of the cars Aston Martin are currently producing, and in modern terms is best compared to the Porsche Carrera. And that’s the market that this new car will directly take on, it’s Aston Martin’s competition for the Porsche GT3. Any how better to promote the new car than in a James Bond film?

However, if you’re not to keen on the cars current don’t worry. What you see above is only a prototype known as an “engineering mule”. The actual car will carry the signature Aston Martin horizontal grille opening and side cooling vents not featured on the above model. Furthermore, the final design is expected to draw heavily on the Aston Martin DB4 and DB5, whereas, the above model draws heavily on the DB7.

Production of the new car awaits construction of a new factory on the grounds of the Land Rover technical center in Gaydon, England. The new factory will be dedicated to producing the new car, which is expected on the market for 2004 or 2005.

Such a release date just happens to perfectly co-incide with the release of Bond 21.

If you'd like to discuss the new car please visit this thread of the Bond 21 Forums!

  6. Official Site updates with new Video

    By David Winter on 2002-08-06

The Official James Bond Website, located at www.jamesbond.com has updated with a new Video, showing 2nd Unit Head Vic Armstrong talking about the Hovercraft Sequence.

On a small note, the publishing date is August 1, well – today it's August 6. Something seems to go wrong with this year's MGM Marketing

German-speaking people will know that bit of interview already as it was used in different RTL reports in the past.

Feel free to discuss in this thread of the CommanderBond.net Die Another Day Forums.

  7. New 007 Motor Revealed?

  8. Vanity Fair To Have DAD Exclusive August 13!

    By daniel on 2002-08-06

Great news for Bond fans and for the promotion of Die Another Day with a special Vanity Fair issue to be dedicated to the film. The September issue of Vanity Fair will hit stands on August 13.

    US based news program Entertainment Tonight have promised a sneak peak of the photos on tonights program. Thus far, they've told us;

Inside Vanity Fair, we get a glimpse of what it takes to make a 007 extravaganza. New Zealand director LEE TAMAHORI ('Along Came a Spider') promises to shake, but not stir, the Bond formula in 'Die Another Day,' while holding onto many of the tried-and-true elements that make the 40-year-old series a success.

"I'll be very disappointed if it turns out the same old Bond," he tells the magazine.

In fact, Tamahori was so intent on pushing the envelope that he put Bond in the middle of a steamy love scene, daring the censors to leave it in.

"In lovemaking, Bond's PG requirements have traditionally meant you can only show post-coital sex," he says. "You know, clothes strewn around the room, the camera slowly pans over to the bed… But we thought, why couldn't Bond have the best lay of his life? So we shot a very hot love scene. Whether it survives the censor's cut — or the producers — we'll see."

It promises to be a great issue! You can be sure that you'll get more details from CommanderBond.Net as they come to light!

Finally, a big thanks to 'solitaire' for sending in the news!

  9. Surfer Wanted Hydrofoil In Pre-Title Sequence

    By daniel on 2002-08-05

Laird Hamilton has revealed that he wanted a 'Hydrofoil' that he invented in the pre-title sequence of Die Another Day.

'Dmitri Mishkin' tells us the 'hydrofoil is basically an elevated surfboard on water – there is a strap for one boot (a la snowboard) and a little rutter attached to the board that allows you to steer'.

Laird did reveal that he approached the producers of Die Another Day with his idea, however, they rejected it saying the felt that the audience wouldn't believe its plausibility and would feel that it wasn't real.

Thanks to 'Dmitri Mishkin' for letting us know about the news, if you'd like to discuss it please visit this thread of the Die Another Day Forums.

  10. Bond A No-Show At The San Diego Comic Con

    By johncox on 2002-08-04

On Saturday I attended the San Diego Comic Con, one of the biggest annual gatherings of hard-core movie fans and geeks on the planet. From Paramount there were people dressed in Star Fleet uniforms handing out free NEMISIS posters, Bryan Singer flew down from the set of X-MEN 2 with fresh footage, Star Wars and Lord of the Rings were EVERYWHERE…

James Bond and Die Another Day? Nadda, nothing, zip.

Okay, on Friday I heard there was a 40th Anniversary presentation (not in the main room), but apparently the much discussed DAD presentation was just the teaser. Instead MGM sent the cast of "Bulletproof Monk" and that was what they devoted the majority of their hour on. Baffling.

I did see the Sideshow figures (look great) and I did get a preview card from Rittenhouse (had to ask, they didn't even have them out), but I was very disappointed in the lack of any DAD hype. It really makes me angry. MGM will trot out that damn Aston Martin for Show West or Canne, but they can't put on a sexy presentation for these legions of young fans who are really on the fence when it comes to Bond. That Aston Martin sitting on the convention center floor would have done wonders in reminding these kids that Bond is still cool.

But this sure isn't the first time MGM/Eon has ignored the San Diego Con (which I think of as the Show West for fans). The last time I went to the San Diego Con was in '99. There was zip for TWINE while Sleepy Hollow had a huge display. And yet, the two movies opened on the same day and TWINE won the weekend.

If you'd like to discuss the San Diego Comic Con please do so in this thread of the Die Another Day Forums.
