  2. 'In Secret Service' Reveals The Secrets Of A Lost Fleming Manuscript

    By Devin Zydel on 2007-05-30

K1Bond007 has reported on a newly released fiction novel that might be of particular interest for literary James Bond fans: In Secret Service

Written by Mitch Silver, In Secret Service is a fast-paced thriller that connects mysteries concerning the abdication of King Edward VIII, WWII and the death of Princess Diana with a lost Ian Fleming manuscript from 1964 that wasn’t discovered until 50 years later. The full blurb:

In 1964, James Bond’s creator sealed a package containing a manuscript he thought no one would read until fifty years after his death. Ian Fleming was an officer in Britain’s Naval Intelligence during World War II, and he had his own adventures to recount. His family ties and his career had taken him to the upper echelons of British and American society and espionage, a world where passionate affairs, exotic locations, and polite cocktail chatter were interlaced with danger, betrayal, and deceit. He’d replicated that world in his famous novels, but this manuscript contained a real spy story that would explode history when its secrets were revealed. He’d chosen the reader, and he’d have to trust she would serve the truth.

In 2005, Amy Greenberg–a young American academic with a glittering future–is summoned to Ireland to claim the contents of her grandfather’s safe deposit box, in which she finds only one thing: a manuscript by Ian Fleming. The pages detail Fleming’s involvement in Allied spycraft and contain information so confidential, so potentially explosive, that Amy soon discovers that people on both sides of the Atlantic are willing to kill to maintain its secrecy. As she journeys back home with her precious cargo, Amy finds herself in a race against time–she must unlock the manuscript’s shocking and fascinating secrets and outwit the unknown assailants who would do anything to bury the truth and protect a traitor’s name.

Peopled with characters including Winston Churchill, Princess Diana, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Anthony Blunt, and FDR and illustrated with authenticating documents, In Secret Service is a historical mystery inside a contemporary thriller. The debut of an exciting new writer, this book combines impeccable research with thrilling action, in a brand-new take on espionage suspense.

Published by Touchstone Books, In Secret Service was released on 22 May 2007 and can be ordered online:

  4. Two New Daniel Craig Biographies Coming Later This Year

    By Devin Zydel on 2007-05-29

Two new Daniel Craig biographies can be added to the list of upcoming literary James Bond releases later this year. Both Daniel Craig by Daniel O’Brien and Daniel Craig: The Biography by Sarah Marshall are scheduled to be released in September 2007.

Daniel Craig will be published by Reynolds & Hearn Ltd and can currently be pre-ordered at amazon.co.uk. The hardback is due out on 6 September.

Daniel Craig: The Biography is set to be published by John Blake Publishing Ltd and can also be pre-ordered at amazon.co.uk. The full blurb:

He’s gorgeous, tremendously talented, charming and sexy. His breathtaking performance as the new James Bond in Casino Royale won him legions of fans and proved that, as well as being an outstanding actor; he could cut it as an action hero and could re-define a cinematic icon to huge critical acclaim. Daniel Craig, arguably the most inspiring 007, has truly made it as an A-list film star. This fascinating and affectionate book reveals everything about Britain’s favourite leading man: how he endured poverty-stricken years when he was first struggling to make it as an actor in London; how he rejected the ‘trivial’ publicity that came when he started to make a name for himself; his relationships, including his marriage to a British actress with whom he has a daughter; plus his encounters with Sienna Miller and Kate Moss and how he has handled the adulation that has come from his new role as 007. This is the intriguing story of a supremely talented actor who has established his reputation, then defied expectations and silenced those who doubted his Bond would live up to its predecessors. It is essential reading for any Daniel Craig admirer and for the masses of film fans for whom his performance as Bond was an unforgettable cinematic experience.

  5. Encore Presents 'True Bond: Ian Fleming's Inspiration For James Bond'

    By Devin Zydel on 2007-05-29

According to a new press release, Encore will be presenting a documentary entitled True Bond on 22 June that deals with one of the real life people that Ian Fleming reportedly based the character of James Bond on. This is followed by a 52 hour marathon of 007 films…

    Encore Presents True Bond
Original Special on Ian Fleming’s Inspiration For James Bond
    Followed by 52-Hour Bond-A-Thon Beginning June 22

His name was Popov, Dusko Popov. Not a household name like James Bond, Sean Connery or Roger Moore, but nevertheless, he was the spy who came in from the cold that author Ian Fleming reputedly based 007, his legendary secret agent on. On Friday, June 22 beginning at 8 p.m. (et/pt), Encore presents True Bond, an original special on Fleming’s inspiration, followed by a 52-hour Bond-A-Thon featuring 16 classic Bond films, including Dr. No, The Spy Who Loved Me, Goldfinger, From Russia With Love and Thunderball, among others.

Popov, a Yugoslav playboy, was recruited by Britain as a double agent during World War II after earlier agreeing to work for the Germans. Popov’s codename was “Tricycle,” originally thought to be attributed to him for his penchant for menages a trois’. However, his original codename “Scout” was changed when he appointed two sub agents under him (hence referencing the three-wheeled cycle).

Around the same time, author Ian Fleming worked in British naval intelligence and was detailed to trail the charismatic Popov, who stayed at the most posh hotels, ate at the finest restaurants, played at the top casinos and was indeed a suave ladies man — a worthy predecessor to the fictional 007.

True Bond will be followed by a 52-hour Bond-A-Thon featuring the action thrillers that made Sean Connery, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton and, hmmmm, George Lazenby, famous. Other notables who appear in some of the Bond-A-Thon films include Kim Basinger, Benicio Del Toro, Rowan Atkinson, Jane Seymour, Yaphet Kotto, Carey Lowell, Jill St. John, Donald Pleasance, Ursula Andress and Britt Ekland.

    By Devin Zydel on 2007-05-27

Tonight reports that Daniel Craig recently arrived in Cape Town to begin work on his newest film, Flashbacks Of A Fool.

Flashbacks Of A Fool centers on a hedonistic British actor (played by Craig) whose Hollywood career is starting to nosedive. The film also stars Helen McCrory, Olivia Williams, Emilia Fox and Eve. It is the feature-writing and directing debut of Baillie Walsh and is produced by Lene Bausager and Damon Bryant. Craig is also acting as the executive producer.
