  2. SPOILERS: More Italian Locations For 'Bond 22'?

    By Matt Weston on 2007-08-20

Fresh off the news that the Bond 22 crew – with Daniel Craig in tow – shot footage at the Palio di Siena in Tuscany last Thursday comes further reports of Italian location scouting.

    The town of Craco

CBn Forum member “Vauxhall” has kindly translated a report from Italian state news agency ANSA.it, which suggests location scouting has occurred in the Basilicata region of southern Italy. Specifically, the James Bond crew are said to have visited the town of Craco (in the province of Matera), the viaducts of the Montecotugno di Senise dam and the road around San Biagio and Maratea (in the province of Potenza).

The news reportedly emerged from the regional Lucania Film Festival in Pisticci, which took place from 11 August to 15 August. The report also follows filming of the controversial Palio di Siena horse race, which is said to feature amongst numerous scenes in the town of Siena.

“Vauxhall” speculates the town of Craco bears a striking resemblance to North Africa; in particular, to Algeria, which, as Casino Royale fans will remember, is where Vesper Lynd’s boyfriend originates from. Eva Green herself hinted back in November that he may be the film’s “baddie”.

As it stands, a tight lid is being kept on all things Bond 22. However, with the film due to begin principal photography in December, it’s only a matter of time before more news emerges. Keep watching CBn.

    By Devin Zydel on 2007-08-18

007 Magazine OnLine reports that following the successful re-release of Sean Connery’s Goldfinger this past July in UK theatres, distributor Park Circus is now polling fans to see which James Bond film they want to see on the big screen next.

The choices are Thunderball, You Only Live Twice, On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, The Spy Who Loved Me and GoldenEye. 007 fans can vote for their choice by visiting the official myfilms.com website.

Before the re-release of Goldfinger in July, John Letham, managing director of Park Circus said that they were ‘testing the water. 6. Chris Cornell Reflects On 'Casino Royale' And Daniel Craig As 007

    By Devin Zydel on 2007-08-18

In a recent article posted at This Is Nottingham, singer and songwriter Chris Cornell reflects on how he became associated with the world of James Bond through last year’s Casino Royale.

‘I was surprised to be asked,’ he recalls. ‘And I had some reservations about it. Guys like me resist stuff like that. Then I heard about Daniel Craig being James Bond.’

‘I’d actually seen him in several films and was starting to pay attention to him. I knew he was an accomplished actor, and James Bonds tend to be the people’s actor–you like them because that’s who they are.’

‘Sean Connery is always Sean Connery,’ Cornell adds. I’m a huge fan, but he doesn’t transform for roles. So I imagined that this could be an amazing twist … I was a fan of [Daniel Craig] already and I thought, if they do this right, it could be genius. Then they showed me the opening sequence where my song was going to be, and I was really excited to be the guy to make that song.’

‘But the biggest trepidation really is that you’re on a list with bands like Duran Duran, and A-ha, and Paul McCartney. Oh and Lulu, whoever that is, I don’t know who that is.’

Cornell’s title song for Casino Royale, “You Know My Name,” was just recently nominated for the award for Best Original Song Written Directly For A Film at the 2007 World Soundtrack Awards. Winner announcements will take place in this upcoming October.

  7. 'We are not making Young Bond into films yet.'

    By Devin Zydel on 2007-08-18

Ian Fleming Publications (IFP) is pushing all the right buttons according to a report from the Financial Times.

Putting together the everlasting popularity of the original 14 James Bond novels by Ian Fleming along with the recent announcement that Devil May Care by Sebastian Faulks will mark Fleming’s centenary in May 2008 makes IFP a prime example of why literary estates continue to be some of the most powerful in the media.

In addition, Charlie Higson’s Young Bond series, which was launched with SilverFin in 2005, has proven to be a worldwide success for the company.

‘We were looking at a younger market because that is very interesting,’ says Corinne Turner, IFP managing director. ‘We are not making Young Bond into films yet because we wanted to establish them as a literary series first.’

Back in May of 2006, Higson told fans at the Hay Festival in Wales: ‘There’s a lot of interest from film companies and from Hollywood but we’re going to hold off for the time being.’

‘I’m pretty sure there will be a film one day. But I want to get the books written–I don’t want people to come to the character through film. Part of what the Fleming estate was keen on was reminding people that Bond was a literary character before the film.’

IFP has plenty on their plate for the upcoming year. In addition to the publication of Higson’s Hurricane Gold next month and the May 2008 release of Devil May Care, there will also be many events designed to celebrate the life of the literary 007 and to examine Fleming’s legacy.

  9. 'For Your Eyes Only: Ian Fleming and James Bond' Exhibition

    By Devin Zydel on 2007-08-17

The wheels are starting to turn in preparation for the Ian Fleming centenary celebrations next year.

The Times reports that the first comprehensive exhibition–entitled ‘For Your Eyes Only: Ian Fleming and James Bond’–exploring the Bond phenomenon and the life of his creator is set to open next April at the Imperial War Museum in London.

The exhibition, which is just one of many planned events designed to examine Fleming’s legacy in honour of his centenary next year, will bring together both personal effects of the author and an ‘unparalleled range of Bond memorabilia’ in order to discover where the identity of the debonair spymaster and journalist ended and the fictional secret agent began.

James Taylor, the curator of the exhibition, noted that the author and his creation were both very similar in terms of their love of luxury. ‘It was said of Churchill that he was easily satisfied with the best of everything, and I think you could say the same of Fleming.’

But there were also well-defined differences. ‘They were two different people. Bond is, in some ways, who Fleming would have liked to have been. During the war he worked in Naval Intelligence but it was a desk job. He wasn’t able to partake in any frontline operations. Bond also acts as a mouthpiece for Fleming’s own world view, particularly as regards Britain’s role in the world.’

Items to be on display will include Fleming’s research notes for From Russia with Love, prototypes of the flick-knife shoes worn by Rosa Klebb in the film, Goldfinger’s golf shoes, a ‘blood-splattered’ shirt worn by Daniel Craig in Casino Royale and Halle Berry’s bikini from Die Another Day.

In addition, the exhibition will also feature the manuscript for the non-Bond, but ever popular Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, annotated Bond manuscripts, notes for the scandalous Thrilling Cities series, the Colt Python .357 Magnum revolver presented to Fleming by the Colt company and a map of the Mercury News Network, established by Fleming in the 1950s to collect information and intelligence from Sunday Times foreign correspondents.

The organisers of the event also hope to track down the golden typewriter that Fleming used to write many of his Bond adventures and to secure a letter to the author written by a Major Boothroyd, advising him on what handguns for 007.

‘We are looking at the phenomenon that the films became, because they offer another way of looking at Fleming’s work. We want to put across the idea that the film Bond is a very different man from the literary Bond. He has a sense of humour, he sleeps with far more women and he has much less of a conscience than the character on the page.

‘Cubby Broccoli took Fleming’s ingredients and turned them into his own dish.’

For further details on the exhibition, read the entire article from The Times.

Ian Fleming’s centenary takes place on 28 May 2008, the same day Devil May Care, the all-new Bond novel by Sebastian Faulks, is set for release.

  10. SPOILERS: Photos: Daniel Craig Visits 'Bond 22' Filming In Tuscany

    By Matt Weston on 2007-08-17
Daniel Craig at the Palio di Siena

As previously reported (see here and here for the SPOILER reports), it has now been confirmed that filming took place yesterday in the Tuscan town of Siena for sequences to be shown in Bond 22. The filming coincided with the bi-annual Palio di Siena horse race, which will appear in the movie.

What was not expected was for James Bond himself, Daniel Craig, to be present at the filming.

These images, courtesy of Der Spiegel and Corriere della Sera, show Craig watching the event from inside one of the town’s buildings.

Times Online, who originally broke the news to the English-speaking world that the race would feature in Bond 22, today published a follow-up report stating that no horses or jockeys were killed during the dangerous race.

Access Hollywood reports Craig has not yet stepped back into 007’s shoes, and attended the race merely as a spectator.

The crew were ordered to shoot the race in strict documentary-style, with no manipulation or ridiculing of the event, and no shots of violence involving horses or people to be included. A reported total of 14 cameras were strategically placed around the event, but no helicopter shots were permitted.

The sequence is said to see 007 pursuing the film’s villain down narrow cobbled streets, then across the town’s rooftops and through its medievil aqueducts as the horses charge around the Piazza del Campo. The town’s bottini, a tangled network of underground tunnels, will reportedly also play a role in the film.

Siena’s town council have reportedly granted Eon Productions permission to return to film footage in and around the town during principal photography between January and July 2008. However, it is likely that such scenes may simply be recreated at Pinewood Studios.

For more in-depth information about what the Siena-set scenes will reportedly involve, check out the SPOILER articles listed below, and keep watching CBn for the latest Bond 22 news.
