  4. Quantum of Solace Definitive Edition 2-Disc DVD set listing online

James Bond in 'Quantum of Solace'

James Bond in Quantum of Solace

A brand new listing has appeared online at Australian DVD website EzyDVD for a 2-Disc Definitive Edition of Daniel Craig’s Quantum of Solace.

While details are extremely limited at the moment, this new release is due out on 28 July 2010 and will feature lenticular packaging (something that was briefly done for the James Bond DVDs in 2008).

Cover artwork, special features and whether or not this so-called Definitive Edition will also be available on the Blu-ray format remain a mystery for the time being.

CommanderBond.net readers will recall that Quantum director Marc Forster revealed in April 2009 that he was working on a special edition of the film that would include audio commentaries and behind-the-scenes featurettes, among other extras that were omitted from the original release.

    Marc Forster

    Marc Forster

At the time, Forster was also debating whether or not to include the original cliffhanger ending to the film as a deleted scene. It was in this one-minute long scene that 007 confronts Mr. White and utters the ‘Bond, James Bond’ line.

‘It wasn’t cut because of that sentence,’ Forster said at the time. ‘It was cut for other reasons. I think it worked but it is still better how it is. It’s not on [the original DVD release] and we are still discussing whether we should put it in the next one. On one hand, I think it would be cool for the audience to see it. On the other hand, I think it would be more interesting to keep it a mystery.’

  5. Gemma Arterton: James Bond will survive

    By Devin Zydel on 2010-04-22

News Release – Gemma Arterton is sure James Bond will bounce back from its financial troubles, putting the legendary film franchise on hold.

    Gemma Arterton

    Gemma Arterton

The 24-year-old actress played Bond girl Strawberry Fields opposite current 007 Daniel Craig in Quantum Of Solace in 2008.

Gemma said: ‘It shows the state of the film industry at the moment, especially the British film industry. Fingers crossed—it’s James Bond so it has to continue and it will. It’s just a minor blip.’

EON Productions have blamed the financial difficulties of MGM studios, which is reported to have a 3.7 billion-dollar (£2.4 billion) debt.

J Blakeson, who directs Gemma in their latest film The Disappearance Of Alice Creed, feels British film is thriving.

He said: ‘James Bond is funded by an American studio anyway. Obviously it’s very good for the technicians, it’s made by British people. But most of the money that gets made from James Bond films doesn’t stay in Britain so it doesn’t fuel our industry very much.

‘I think there’s a real good wave of up and coming filmmakers at the moment, it’s quite exciting.’

  6. Speculation mounts over Bond 23 delay

    By Matt Weston on 2010-04-20

Today’s announcement that development of Bond 23 has been suspended has left the 007 fan community in shock.

With news of the film’s postponement spreading throughout the world, MGM have so far declined to comment, leaving speculation to mount over what this means for the future of the franchise – and the studio.

On industry blog Deadline Hollywood, Nikki Fenke and Mike Fleming speculate that the announcement was made to signal to MGM that Eon will not proceed to develop the film while the studio remains beset with financial difficulties.

A source told the site, “It feels like Eon is sending a message to MGM. If they try to continue as a standalone studio, don’t expect to be making any Bond films.”

The speculation is in line with previous reports suggesting Eon won’t proceed with development of Bond 23 while MGM’s future remains in question.

Elsewhere, The Hollywood Reporter claims some parties have been suggesting MGM may sell off its rights to co-produce the Bond films in order to raise more capital.

Meanwhile, Daniel Craig is reportedly backing Eon’s decision to halt development of the latest James Bond film. BBC News quotes the actor as saying, “I have every confidence in Barbara [Broccoli] and Michael [G. Wilson]’s decision and look forward to production resuming as quickly as possible.”

  7. Bond 23 delayed indefinitely

    By Matt Weston on 2010-04-19

Eon Productions today announced development of the 23rd James Bond film has been suspended indefinitely.

    Bond 23 delayed indefinitely

LONDON, April 19, 2010 — 007 producers, Michael G Wilson and Barbara Broccoli of EON Productions, today announced they have suspended development on the next James Bond film previously scheduled for release 2011/2012.

“Due to the continuing uncertainty surrounding the future of MGM and the failure to close a sale of the studio, we have suspended development on BOND 23 indefinitely. We do not know when development will resume and do not have a date for the release of BOND 23,” stated Michael G Wilson and Barbara Broccoli jointly.

EON Productions have produced twenty two James Bond films since 1962. In 1995, Michael G Wilson and Barbara Broccoli took over the 007 franchise from Albert R ‘Cubby’ Broccoli and are responsible for producing some of the most successful James Bond films ever, including CASINO ROYALE and more recently QUANTUM OF SOLACE. The James Bond franchise is the longest running in film history. EON Productions and Danjaq LLC are affiliate companies and control all worldwide merchandising for James Bond.

While no official release date had been announced for Bond 23, producers were understood to be aiming for the film to hit cinemas in 2011. Following this statement, it appears unlikely Bond 23 will be released in 2011 or 2012.

Recent rumours had suggested development of the film was continuing, despite the uncertain situation at MGM. This appears not to be the case.

Eon have made no statement about the ongoing involvement of any of its screenwriters (Neal Purvis, Robert Wade and Peter Morgan), or Sam Mendes, who has been rumoured to direct.

Reuters unsuccessfully attempted to reach MGM for comment.

The future of MGM remains in doubt with the studio struggling under the weight of a $3.7 billion debt. MGM has received a series of underwhelming bids from rival studios after it was put up for sale last November. Variety claims the bids it has received are around half a billion dollars less than the amount being sought by MGM and some of its debt holders. Meanwhile, other debt holders are said to be prolonging the process in an effort to save the studio.

  9. Sir Sean Connery IS Sir Billi

    By Devin Zydel on 2010-04-11

BILLI PRODUCTIONS LTD IN POST-PRODUCTION ON SCOTLAND’S FIRST ANIMATED FEATURE FILM SIR BILLI

Sir Sean Connery Stars in New Animated Family Film, Scheduled for Completion Summer 2010

Embarking on Scotland’s first full-length animated feature film, Glasgow-based Billi Productions Ltd and independent studio Glasgow Animation have started post-production including final colorization, lighting and rendering on the new animated family film Sir Billi, it was announced today by Sascha Hartmann, co-founder of Billi Productions Ltd. The production team is also unveiling the first in a series of animation stills from the film.

Hartmann is directing Sir Billi from a screenplay written by his wife Tessa Hartmann, from an original story they developed together. John Fraser is producing, with Sir Sean Connery serving as executive producer.

Sir Sean Connery IS Sir Billi

Sir Sean Connery IS Sir Billi

Expanded to a feature length CGI film from a 2006 short concept, the heart-warming and hilarious adventure film Sir Billi features an all-star cast including Academy Award winner Sir Sean Connery in his first ever animated voice-over role [CBn Note: Sean Connery also provided the voice for ‘Draco’ in 1996’s DragonHeart], and Tony Award winner Alan Cumming. All animation has been created in-house by the Glasgow Animation team of 60 creative professionals who have been hard at work since the inception of the project and created proprietary technology specifically for the film. Having developed a short film teaser using Maya software in 2005, the company then developed and created a unique proprietary production pipeline in order to complete a full-length feature. What began as a budgetary constraint proved to be advantageous as the film now has a very distinctive look. Under the direction of Sascha Hartmann, the small but highly skilled team is comprised of Creative Technical Director Kevin McCormack, Supervising Head of Animation Kenneth Chan and Head of GA Pipeline Federico Fiore.

Rich with authentic and discreetly embedded humorous details from the Highland village scenes, the creative team also incorporated artwork of Connery’s wife, French artist Micheline Roquebrune, into Sir Billi’s cottage. Sascha Hartmann created a Sir Billi tartan for the film that was exclusively manufactured by Lochcarron of Scotland, based in Hawick. The ‘Sir Billi’ tartan fabric was woven over a period of ten weeks, then registered as a member of the Scottish Tartans Authority, proving its authenticity for the hero’s real-life and film wardrobes.

Academy Award nominated Scottish composer Patrick Doyle, (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Sense and Sensibility), created the film’s music score and also lends his voice as a key character in the film. British singing legend Dame Shirley Bassey also joined the project to perform the title track ‘Guardian of the Highlands,’ marking the first time Connery and Shirley have worked together since the 1964 James Bond film Goldfinger [and 1971’s Diamonds are Forever].

Scotland’s first full length animated feature also showcases the voice acting talents of Miriam Margolyes (Harry Potter, Romeo & Juliet), Alex Norton (Pirates of the Caribbean, Taggart), Ford Kiernan (Chewin’ the Fat, The Last Great Wilderness), Barbara Rafferty (The Wicker Man, River City), Greg Hemphill (Still Game, Chewin the Fat), Kieron Elliot (How to Train Your Dragon), Ruby Wax, John Amabile, Larry Sullivan, Chris Jai Alex and NYC night queen Amy Sacco.

Explore the powerful force of this international Highland community, with its unrivalled landscapes, breathtaking scenery and hidden secrets. Discover the power of the local people when they unite as one against evil and embark on an expedition unlike any other.

Sir Sean Connery has been heavily involved in the making of the film since its inception and was inspired to take on the lead role of Sir Billi after being contacted by the husband and wife producing team who forwarded a short demo reel of the endearing grandfather Sir Billi in action. “We sent a DVD to Sir Sean via a mutual acquaintance and heard nothing for a few weeks when suddenly the phone rang. It was Sir Sean personally explaining that his grandchildren had taken the DVD from his home and kept it. They loved it that much. ‘If it’s good enough for them, it’s good enough for me!’ he said, and with that, we met a few weeks later when he came to Scotland. “We’ve been working closely with him ever since,” stated Tessa Hartmann.

“I’m excited to be a part of this incredible film and Scotland’s first animated feature,” said Connery. “Sir Billi is truly a first class film, with an exceptional cast, and is sure to delight audiences of all ages.”

“We knew Sir Sean was perfect for the role of Sir Billi – being a true Scottish hero and also a grandfather,” said Sascha Hartmann. “Sir Billi is the quintessential fun, caring, family-focused grandfather we all wish we could have!”

  10. Mendes confirmed, Morgan out, Marber in?

    By Matt Weston on 2010-04-11

As the future of MGM remains undecided, The Telegraph claims there’s movement behind the scenes of Bond 23.

    Peter Morgan

Peter Morgan – off Bond 23?

According to the paper, James Bond producer Barbara Broccoli has confirmed that American Beauty helmer Sam Mendes will direct the next 007 outing.

It had previously been reported that the Oscar-winning director was attached only in a “consultant” capacity.

The Telegraph also reports that The Queen screenwriter Peter Morgan is no longer working on the script for the 23rd Bond film. Morgan boarded Bond 23 alongside 007 regulars Neal Purvis and Robert Wade in June last year.

Mendes is reportedly seeking playwright and screenwriter Patrick Marber to replace Morgan on the film. Marber is the scribe behind Notes on a Scandal and Closer (having written and directed the play from which it was adapted). He has also written and starred in several projects featuring Steve Coogan’s inept TV presenter Alan Partridge, including The Day Today and Knowing Me, Knowing You.

However, the Telegraph couldn’t get confirmation of the writer switch from MGM. A studio spokesperson said, “The filmmakers say the Morgan/Marber switch is just speculation.”

Keep watching CommanderBond.net for confirmation or denial of these rumours as soon as it emerges.
