Daniel Craig is currently in talks with DreamWorks and Jon Favreau to play the lead role in the upcoming Cowboys and Aliens.

Variety reports that the 007 star has been offered the role of Jake Johnson after fellow actor Robert Downey Jr. just recenty dropped out.

The project, which is based off of a 2006 graphic novel, focuses on a group of Apache Indians and Western settlers who set aside their differences when an alien spaceship crash-lands in their city.

Representatives for Craig said it was still too early in negotiations to state for certain whether or not he’ll be starring in the film.

Cowboys and Aliens is directed by Iron Man‘s Jon Favreau and is scripted by Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman and Damon Lindelof. The film is reportedly aiming for a summer 2011 release date, which may interfere with Craig’s schedule for his third go as James Bond in Bond 23, depending on how the MGM situation plays out.

    Stay tuned.
