  1. The Story of the Nabila

    By Guest writer on 2007-09-05

    Written by Lars Zeppernick

Luxury yachts and boats have quite often been featured in James Bond movies, and one of the most famous examples of them was Adnan Kashoggi’s “Nabila”, named after his daughter, which doubled for the “Flying Saucer” in the Kevin McClory produced Bond movie Never Say Never Again.

The “Nabila” was built in 1980 by Fratelli Benetti shipyard in Viareggio (Italy), being the world’s largest private yacht at that time with a length of 281 ft. (85,65 metres). And even after a quarter century, it is still among the world’s largest yachts’ Top 25. The exterior design was done by Jon Bannenberg of London, while the interiors were done by Italian Luigi Sturchio.

The Bond crew was the first movie crew allowed on board of Kashoggi’s swimming palace, for which producer Jack Schwartzman made “a contribution to The Princess Grace Foundation for charity through the Kashoggi Foundation” and Kashoggi also got a Thanks “A.K.” in the movie’s end credits. This deal scored Schwartzman a few points with his leading actor Sean Connery, which otherwise he mostly failed during the lengthy shooting of Never Say Never Again.

In the movie, the vessel was called “Flying Saucer” (English for “Disco Volante”, as the its equivalent was named in Thunderball) and served as Maximilian Largo’s mobile headquarters, at home on the seven seas. However, the ship’s command central that was shown in the movie was fictional, the work of production designer Stephen Grinds and art director Les Dilley.

    Image: NabilaImage: Nabila

The original yacht, at the height of a three storey building, featured five decks. It had three elevators, a 12-seat movie theatre, two saunas, a swimming pool, a discotheque, a jacuzzi, a billard room, eleven guest rooms with hand-carved onyx bathroom fixtures and gold-plated door-knobs and a master suite of 4 rooms, the bathroom of which had a solid gold sink. There also was a sun deck equipped with bullet-proof glass, sleeping quarters for 52 staff members, a three room “hospital”, secret passageways, push-button doors and windows and no less than 296 telephones. The steel hull ship made 18 – 20 knots and was powered by two 3000 hp Nohab Polar V 16 turbocharged diesel engines.

Several figures are known about the original price of the “Nabila”: while some sources speak of $70 million, others say that the boat itself was about $30 million plus $55 million for the luxury extras, which makes a total of $85 million. However, the building of the ship eventually led to bankrupcy of the manufacturer. The Benetti managers were very traditional and used to unwritten business rules among gentlemen—which Kashoggi wasn’t and didn’t care for. He was a tough bargainer and apart from keeping the price as low as possible, he had also insisted on several penalty clauses. After he had demanded a lot of changes during the build, Benetti had to ask for a necessary extension of the production timeframe, but he wouldn’t allow it and instead insist on the contract’s clauses—which were void after his many changing demands, but Benetti were unaware of this. The company never recovered from the losses and was sold to boat dealer Azimut in 1984, who then started to build their own boats on the shipyard, still using the traditional name Benetti.

When arms dealer Kashoggi was bankrupt himself in 1987 the “Nabila” was used to pay off a loan to the Sultan of Brunei, who sold the ship to billionaire Donald Trump at a bargain price of $29 million. Trump renamed her “Trump Princess” and had her refitted for $8 million at Amels in Holland. The boat—now with a white hull instead of the original grey painting—was brought to New York and was later partly used as a casino ship in Atlantic City.

“The Donald” himself never really had a thing for boats and he is said to never have spent a night on board. He more considered it a prize, a masterpiece “beyond a boat” and when he toured visitors, he boasted about the luxury features, such as the heliport on which he had painted a big “T” instead of the usual “H”.

In the early 1990s when Trump went bankrupt himself, he was forced to sell his beloved yacht—among other things—and thought that his name alone attached to the boat would justify to ask a price of $115 million for it. But he was dead wrong, as he didn’t even match the price for which he bought it himself. The new and current owner, Prince Alwaleed bin Talal bin Abdul Aziz al Saud, a wealthy Saudi businessman with ties to the Royal family, claims that he only paid $19 million for it.

The boat got another refitting at Amels, where the hull was painted beige in order to reflect the colour of sand, more gold decoration was used on the interiors and arms systems were installed. Renamed “Kingdom 5KR” (after the Prince’s company’s name, his lucky number and his childrens’ initials), the ship is permanently anchored at the IYCA in the port of Antibes (South France) with frequent visits to Cannes.

  2. Dan Bradley Is 'Bond 22' Second Unit Director

Bradley most recently served as second unit director and stunt coodinator on The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum. His very extensive resumé also includes second unit director roles on Seabiscuit, Swordfish, Spider-man 2, Spiderman-3 and Superman Returns. He is currently working on the fourth Indiana Jones film.

Bradley choreographed and directed the critically-acclaimed fight scenes and car chases in the two most recent Jason Bourne films, directed by Paul Greengrass. The 007 producers reportedly want Bradley to work in a similar capacity to build upon the gritty, realistic style established in Casino Royale.

In an interview with the Bourne Stunt Simulator, an enthusiastic Bradley even hinted at what vehicles we can expect to see in Bond 22. “I’m hearing that there’s Aston Martin and GT40s in the next Bond. I can’t wait.”Ironically, Bradley takes over from Casino Royale‘s Alexander Witt, who was second unit director on The Bourne Identity.

He joins director Marc Forster, writers Neal Purvis, Robert Wade and Paul Haggis and production designer Dennis Gassner, as part of the growing Bond 22 crew.

It is also worth noting that the IMDb lists Casino Royale stunt coordinator Gary Powell as part of the Bond 22 crew; Powell worked with Bradley on The Bourne Ultimatum. Oscar-nominee and regular Forster collaborator Matt Chesse has also been listed as Bond 22‘s editor.

  3. Possible Swiss 'Bond 22' Location Details

    By Matt Weston on 2007-09-03

Last month, CBn reported on the Film Location Switzerland (the Swiss Film Commission) bid to see the next James Bond film set in the country. Word at the time was that “nothing’s definite yet, but the chances are good.”

    Lucerne

    Lucerne

Now, further details have emerged on the locations suggested by Film Location Switzerland’s André Brice, courtesy of Swiss news site, Zentralschweiz Online.

The site reports that Lucerne, in central Switzerland, and the Gotthard area were both suggested to Bond 22 director, Marc Forster, who is said to be delighted with the locations. However, the decision does not lie exclusively with Forster, who receives many location suggestions each day.

With a population of over 57,000, Lucerne rests on the shores of Lake Lucerne and has gorgeous views of Mount Pilatus and Rigi. It is perhaps most well-known for the remarkable Chapel Bridge, which dates back to 1333.

    Gotthard Tunnel

    Gotthard Tunnel

Meanwhile, parts of the Gotthard area featured in Goldfinger. A number of mountain passes lead over the Gotthard massif, while a network of tunnels lie beneath the mountains. Not traditionally a tourist area, the Gotthard region was once the core of Switzerland’s “Réduit” defence concept, an Alpine fortress with infrastructured caverns, bunkers and camouflaged weapons.

The Swiss Alps were first mentioned as a possible location for the next 007 outing in June by Forster himself. Forster said at the time, “There can’t be any better place than the alps. No matter if you plan to do romantic scenes or hard action, the alps will be the perfect background for a Bond movie.”

Further fueling rumours was the snippet from this year’s BondStars events that Bond 22 would see Daniel Craig hitting the slopes.

007 Nederland reports the very sad news that Michael Lamont, James Bond art director and brother of Peter Lamont, passed away in July, aged 59.

Michael Lamont joined the 007 production crew for 1981’s For Your Eyes Only as an additional art director, and worked in the art department on every James Bond film since, with the exception of Tomorrow Never Dies. Most recently, Michael Lamont worked in the model unit for three of Pierce Brosnan’s 007 films and Casino Royale. In addition to his considerable contribution to the world of 007, Lamont boasted a very impressive resumé, including work on The Empire Strikes Back, Return Of The Jedi, Raiders Of The Lost Ark, Aliens, Harry Potter And The Philosopher’s Stone and Batman Begins.

Michael Lamont was also part of the Casino Royale production team that won the Excellence in Production Design Award at the 2007 Art Directors Guild awards.

  5. 'Bond 22' Filming Reportedly Moves Into Madrid

    By Devin Zydel on 2007-08-31

While many James Bond fans are aware that some filming for Bond 22 has already taken place in Siena, Italy, it appears that Spain was the next production stop.

According to an article from the El Pais newspaper, filming for Bond 22 reportedly took place in Madrid from 23 to 29 August 2007.

The article, which was published on 21 August, quoted sources inside Sony Spain saying: ‘We are proud to announce filming will take place in Madrid from 23-29 August.’

‘We will film in and around the historic quarter of Madrid,’ which the newspaper report took to mean Madrid de Los Austrias and its sorroundings which include the Royal Palace and Royal Opera. No mentions were made as to whether or not Daniel Craig would be present.

As previously reported on CBn, other possible Bond 22 locations include Austria and Switzerland.

CBn will keep you updated on all the latest details on Daniel Craig’s second 007 film, which hits theatres on 7 November 2008.

  6. SPOILERS: Paul Haggis Weighs In On The Next Bond Villain

    By Matt Weston on 2007-08-29

As Paul Haggis continues his press junket for In The Valley Of Elah, James Bond fans are being treated to more and more snippets about his work on Bond 22.

The first comes courtesy of IGN‘s intrepid reporter, Stax, who quizzed the Oscar-winning screenwriter on-camera about the identity of the next Bond baddie.

Last November, Casino Royale star Eva Green revealed to Entertainment Weekly that Vesper Lynd’s boyfriend would ultimately be revealed to be Bond 22‘s villain. Green said at the time, “They’re going to do a second [movie] where you’ll understand what’s going on in [Vesper’s] mind […] the plan is, the Algerian boyfriend is going to be the baddie in the second Bond, and we’ll understand [better].” James Bond candidate Goran Visnjic was rumoured for the part in March.

Stax raised this quote with Haggis, who coyly replied, “Ohhhh… that’d be cool, wouldn’t it?” When questioned if it was a denial, Haggis said, “It’s not a denial and it’s not a statement… I’m not going to tell you anything!”

Bond 22 co-writer Robert Wade similarly refused to comment on the claim in January.

Stax also brought up the rumours that Bond 22 would see the traditional 007 humour and gags “inverted”, to which Haggis answered, “Well, I’m writing the script; I’m on page twenty- I have no idea! I’ll tell you when I’m on page 100!”

    Check out the video below.

Meanwhile, in another interview with MTV, the screenwriter discussed his inspiration for the new script. “I really loved [Ian Fleming’s] books, and I really loved those movies; the ones that were really true to his books. [The new script] is an odd mix between his stuff and [John] le Carré’s stuff that I’m channeling; I’m mixing them both up.”

    Paul Haggis

Haggis also expressed his desire to bring back Jeffrey Wright’s Felix Leiter (“Wasn’t he great? Yeah. I would really hope that he’d be in this one.”), while he refused to say whether Q would return after his absence in Casino Royale.

The screenwriter also spoke about his relationship with the movie’s director, Marc Forster. “He got my vote when they were looking for a director,” Haggis said. “He’s been terrific to work with, and he’s a great visualist. He’s leaving me alone to do the story, and I think he’s gonna shoot a hell of a movie.”

Click over to MTV for the full article.

The 22nd James Bond film remains untitled, despite a recent suggestion by Haggis (“I said, ‘I think this is going to be a good title,’ and they said, ‘Um-hmm.'”), and is due for release in November 2008. Don’t forget to keep watching CBn for the latest James Bond news.

  7. 'Bond 22' Not Based On A Fleming Story

    By Matt Weston on 2007-08-27

Following a couple of interviews published yesterday, screenwriter Paul Haggis has revealed more details of the script for the next James Bond film as his press junket for In The Valley Of Elan continues.

    Paul Haggis

    Paul Haggis

Most revelatory, the Oscar-winner confirmed to Collider.com that Bond 22 will not be based on any Ian Fleming novel or short story. The script is, however, “steeped in a lot of Fleming’s ideas”.

“It’s something I was really concerned about doing because I liked Casino Royale so much, I had such fun doing it and I just thought I could only fail by trying to do it again. But I’m giving it a shot and it’s an original and it’s not based on any book or short story or anything that Ian Fleming had done. Although, obviously, it’s steeped in a lot of Fleming’s ideas.”

“I’m on page 22. I’m not writing it today because I’m here, but I was writing it up until 8pm last night. It’s a lot of fun. It’s a whole different set of muscles.”

Haggis also reconfirmed the story will pick up “two minutes after Casino Royale” finished, and that the new film would not be jokier in tone.

When asked how much freedom he has in rewriting the 007 scripts, Haggis replied, “Lot of freedom. We work together on the story for a long time then they let me go. Marc [Forster] is also being very supportive and he’s a wonderful director. I’m really happy working with him.”

When asked if plans were afoot to re-adapt Fleming’s previously-filmed novels, Haggis replied, “I don’t know. I’d like to. I think it’d be great. There’s some really terrific books and terrific movies. You’d have to ask them.”

  8. Paul Haggis Talks 'Bond 22' & His Vision For 007

    By Matt Weston on 2007-08-26

Promoting his latest film, In The Valley Of Elah, Oscar-winning screenwriter, Paul Haggis was quizzed by ComingSoon.net about his work on the next James Bond movie.

    Paul Haggis

    Paul Haggis

While he refused to reveal any storyline or location details, Haggis – who is once again polishing a script by Neal Purvis and Robert Wade – did confess, “It picks up two minutes after the last one, and it’s going to be fun.”

When asked about his vision of James Bond, Haggis replied, “My Bond is an actual assassin; when he kills someone, he kills them with a knife, they’re bloody and he pays a price. He denies that he pays a price, but he does. When he sees a woman who witnesses something horrific, and he sees her taking a shower, he doesn’t just go in there and f*ck her, like the old Bond would have done. He sits there with her, and she says, ‘I can’t get this blood from my fingernails.’ So he helps her get the blood from her fingernails; that’s what he does, that’s my Bond. So it’s a different guy; it’s a guy who’s much more like these guys, these heroes [in In The Valley Of Elah].”

Haggis, who also co-wrote the critically-acclaimed Casino Royale, mentioned how rewarding he finds writing the 007 films. “Bond is just pure imagination; you just get to have fun. It’s escapism and it’s fun, but I try to ground him as a human being.”

    Daniel Craig as James Bond

    Daniel Craig as James Bond

Haggis also mentioned he aims to keep his Bond as close as possible to Fleming’s original creation. “Yeah, I hope so because I really loved his books and his movies. That stuff was really close to his books, and most of them aren’t.”

The writer denied rumours that Bond 22 would star Carice van Houten. “She’s great, isn’t she – but she’s not going to be in this one.”

“Everyone says they know what the ending is, and they’re wrong. Everyone thinks they know about the Bond girls, and they’re wrong.”

(In an interview with Volkskrant Magazine, van Houten herself denied the Bond girl claims.)

Meanwhile, in a forthcoming interview with CHUD.com, Haggis was asked whether rumours rampant in the British press last month – that Bond 22 would be jokier in tone – were true. “No,” Haggis simply replied, before stating that Bond 22 will be tonally in line with Casino Royale.

Haggis wrote and directed In The Valley Of Elah, which stars Tommy Lee Jones, Charlize Theron and Susan Sarandon. It opens in selected cities on 14 September.

  9. New DVD Edition Of 'Casino Royale' To Reportedly Contain Three Discs

    By Devin Zydel on 2007-08-25
    'Casino Royale' Teaser Poster

A new Casino Royale DVD is on the way…

After the somewhat bare-bones DVD release of Casino Royale back in March of this year, one question many James Bond fans were asking was what we could expect on the eventual ultimate edition release of the film.

According to sources for CBn, the forthcoming ultimate edition DVD for Casino Royale will reportedly contain three discs–one for the feature film and an additional two for special features.

Back in March, director Martin Campbell discussed the Casino Royale DVD with USA Today and revealed that a commentary would be in store for the next release: ‘Yes, we are doing a commentary. I think [the studio] tends to milk these things [with Bond films]. When I did GoldenEye, I did it with the producer [Michael G. Wilson]. We’ll probably do it with [the producers].’ He also added that 007 fans may see some of the deleted scenes included as well.

More recently, in an interview with Hollywood In Hi-Def, Campbell was asked if he had begun work on any of the special features to accompany the new Casino Royale release: ‘All I’ve done is watch the movie. I’m fascinated by the quality of it. But that’s about as far as I’ve gone. I’m sort of busy at the moment looking at other projects.’

‘Certainly I have to OK the scenes that have been cut out. That’s good. I think people are fascinated by scenes that are cut out and I put most of them back into the disc. I hope there’s going to be an extended documentary because they (documentary film crews) are with us all the time, doing interviews all the way through. The documentary on the existing movie (DVD/Blu-ray discs) is just a little short. I just wanted more…’

While a release date has not yet been revealed, many Bond fans are speculating that the new Casino Royale DVD could come out around the time Daniel Craig’s Bond 22 hits theatres in November 2008.

Keep in mind that this is not to be confused with the upcoming DVD release of the 1967 spoof version of Casino Royale. Click here for CBn’s full coverage of that release.
