  1. Casino Royale Set To Become Most Successful Overseas Bond Film

    By Devin Zydel on 2006-12-05

Record-breaking is a term that accurately describes the success of Casino Royale‘s openings in several premieres around the world. Reuters reports that yet another record is set to be broken by the 21st official James Bond film: the most successful 007 film overseas.

The film has earned nearly $200 million from the overseas box office, and Sony executives are predicting a final foreign gross of ‘up toward the mid-$300 millions.’ Such a feat would make Casino Royale the most successful Bond film overseas, beating the current record of $271 million held by 2002’s Die Another Day.

CBn previously reported that Casino Royale earned £5.3 million (about $10.5 million) in its third week, adding to a grand total of over £37 million, ($70 milllion+) more than the take of any previous James Bond film.

Casino Royale will open in Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Venezuela, and Hungary this upcoming weekend.

  2. Casino Royale Sydney Premiere Thrills Fans

    By Devin Zydel on 2006-12-05

As previously reported on CBn, the Sydney premiere of Casino Royale took place on 4 December, with Daniel Craig, Caterina Murino, and director Martin Campbell in attendance. The Age reports that the premiere was a thrill to all the fans at the event.

Daniel Craig commented on his role while meeting the hundreds of cheering fans: ‘I had a chance to totally rediscover him, work him out. He’s a little bit more human, but that’s because he has to fall in love. You see other sides of him.’ When asked if he felt vindicated, Craig said, ‘I don’t think in that way.’

Additionally, Craig wouldn’t dismiss the idea that Bond 22 could indeed be set in Australia. ‘There is always a chance. We could go anywhere, that’s the fabulous thing about Bond. Certainly, if it gets written into the script I would be here.’

If Craig’s comments on Casino Royale weren’t enough, Campbell sealed the deal, praising the film as ‘the best James Bond film ever is what [fans] can expect.’

  4. Casino Royale – Sydney Premiere Details

    By Devin Zydel on 2006-12-04

CBn had previously reported that the Sydney premiere of Casino Royale would take place on 4 December 2006 and would feature Daniel Craig, Caterina Murino, and director Martin Campbell in attendance.

Details regarding the event, including video interviews with Craig, Murino, and Campbell, can now be viewed on News.com.au.

When asked about his new role as James Bond, Craig said: ‘We had the chance to try and rediscover him a little bit here and open him out. He’s a little more human, but that’s because he has to fall in love and we had to see other sides to him.’

Campbell also commented on Casino Royale, saying: ‘Had it not had the rebooting that we all felt was necessary, then I wouldn’t have done it.’

When asked how his work on Casino Royale compared with introducing Pierce Brosnan as 007 in GoldenEye, Campbell said: ‘They both work very well as their respective Bonds–they’re two totally different Bonds. I don’t think Pierce could have played Casino Royale the same way that I don’t think Daniel could have played GoldenEye. I think they both fit with their time and Daniel’s time is now.’

  7. Casino Royale UK Box Office Overtakes Die Another Day

    By Devin Zydel on 2006-12-02

According to Variety, Casino Royale has already earned more money from the UK box office in its first two full weeks than the entire UK box office take for 2002’s Die Another Day.

The newest James Bond film, in only two full weeks of release in the UK, has already earned $60 million. The most recent 007 film, Die Another Day grossed roughly $59 million in its entire UK box office.

Casino Royale was the 9th biggest all time UK opening day of £1.7 million as well as the biggest ever opening in the UK for a James Bond film. It beat the previous record holder, 2002’s Die Another Day (which took in &pound1.1 million), by 46%.

Casino Royale also made its way into the top three all time biggest UK weekend openings with $25,524,511 (about £13.49 million).

  8. Martin Campbell Proud of Casino Royale

    By Devin Zydel on 2006-12-02

Director Martin Campbell has reason to be satisfied with the final result that is Casino Royale, reports the New Zealand Herald.

However, work on the 21st official James Bond film could be described quite simply as a ‘nightmare,’ said the director. ‘Every time we called “cut” we had to go back to square one. We had 50 decks of cards, all pre-set so, when you dealt, the right hands would come up. All the chips had to be in perfect position around the actors. But there were three major sections and I had to shoot them slightly differently each time so it was difficult.’

On the harsh publicity regarding Daniel Craig as the new 007, Campbell said: ‘Everyone is a little possessive of Bond, and I suppose Daniel wasn’t right to a lot of these people. Then you see it and you realise he’s absolutely terrific.’

When it came to Ian Fleming’s very first James Bond novel, ‘everyone realised we had to go back to basics,’ he says. ‘We changed a few things–the villain becomes a banker for terrorism–and added a lot more action. But, essentially, it’s the same story.’

‘I like the fact I slipped under the radar,’ he said when discussing the lack of recognition he has received for his work in his home country. ‘I just tried to get on with my career. Recognition is bullshit. It’s the work that’s important.’

  9. A Night Out With Mads Mikkelsen

    By Devin Zydel on 2006-12-02

The New York Times features a new article based on a night out with Mads Mikkelsen, who plays the villainous Le Chiffre in Casino Royale.

While ordering dinner, Mikkelsen said of his role in the newest James Bond film: ‘I tried to make Le Chiffre an asthmatic and a heavy smoker. I thought that was a great combination. But no one smokes in a Bond film anymore.’

Mikkelsen did not watch either the 1954 or 1967 version of Casino Royale, nor did he read Ian Fleming’s novel of the same name while preparing for the role.

‘I was probably the clumsiest villain in the history of Bond films because I lost my depth perception,’ he mentioned when discussing the cloudy contact lens provided to him from the art department for the role. ‘I was bumping into lamps and sticking my hand out to shake hands that weren’t there.’

  10. Details On Upcoming Casino Royale Competition

    By Devin Zydel on 2006-12-02

Variety reports with details on upcoming competition that Casino Royale will be facing in December.

The biggest competition to James Bond (despite a very close US battle with Happy Feet‘s penguins) is New Line’s The Nativity Story, which will open at 3,183 playdates. However, according to the report: ‘viewed as somewhat unpredictable, given that it lacks the buzz of controversy that helped propel The Passion of the Christ to over $600 million in worldwide grosses.’

While the battle between Casino Royale and Happy Feet has been centered in the US so far, the penguins will be following James Bond to the foreign market (where 007 is currently dominating the box office) with openings in Germany and Italy for the Warner Bros film.
