    By Devin Zydel on 2006-11-30

While it was revealed that Mads Mikkelsen was becoming a card shark for his poker scenes as Le Chiffre in Casino Royale, Pokermagasinet Ace reports that the actor has won a real life tournament against a Danish pro player (and several others).

Playing in an exclusive tournament arranged by Bet24, Mikkelsen went ‘all in’ against Danish full time pro, Theo Jorgensen, and won with, ironically, the same hand he wins against Bond with early on in Casino Royale: pocket Jacks.

  3. Daniel Craig's Tuxedo From Casino Royale To Be Auctioned

    By Devin Zydel on 2006-11-30

The tuxedo Daniel Craig wore as James Bond in Casino Royale will be auctioned off for charity, reports the BBC.

Along with such prizes as a walk on part in US hit serial Desperate Housewives, the gold Big Brother diary room chair, and a visit to the Hawaii set where US television’s Lost is filmed, all proceeds will go towards helping ChildLine reach their 20th birthday goal of £20 million.

ChildLine is a free, confidential helpline that operates 24 hours a day for children and young people with problems. ‘Your bid will enable ChildLine to increase the number of children it helps,’ said Esther Rantzen, a spokesperson for the charity.

Bidding starts on 1 December, with the live auction to take place at the ChildLine Ball on 9 December.

  4. Casino Royale US Theatre Count To Decrease In December

    By Devin Zydel on 2006-11-30

The US theatre count for Casino Royale, which initially started off at 3,443 locations in the US will decrease by 57 to 3,386, starting 1 December–reports Box Office Mojo.

While this slightly increases the gap between the number of theatres for the newest James Bond film and its main competition, Happy Feet (which will remain at 3,804 theatres) many 007 fans are still predicting that both films will continue to reign at the box office due to a lack of other competition.

Casino Royale has taken the #2 spot (to Happy Feet, which has taken #1 both times) for both weekends so far in the US, but has often come out as #1 for the weekday showings.

  5. Daniel Craig Pleased With Reaction To Casino Royale

    By Devin Zydel on 2006-11-30

In a two-minute interview with Canada.com, Daniel Craig has discussed how pleased he is with the reaction to Casino Royale, plus his new non-James Bond role…

‘I always said, in the beginning, that first and foremost we had to make a good movie–not just a Bond movie–and everyone was on that same page,’ says Craig. ‘Initially the criticisms came in and we just ignored them and got on with our jobs. Now it feels good to know we all did the right thing.’

Interestingly enough, Craig’s next non-Bond project features Casino Royale‘s Eva Green as well. ‘I’m in the middle of shooting something called The Golden Compass says Craig of the action-fantasy film based on a novel by Philip Pullman.

Looking back on his first 007 film, Craig says of speaking with Pierce Brosnan on the role: ‘I said to him, “Look, I want to be Bond.” He said, “Go for it. You have to go for it.” So I can’t thank him enough for that support.’

Craig also jokes about the day he was on set to film Casino Royale‘s harsh torture sequence: ‘Barbara was on set all day that day,’ he says, smiling. ‘She wouldn’t go. I was like, “Don’t you have something to do in the office?”‘

  6. James Bond And Casino Royale Mark A Menswear Trend

    By Devin Zydel on 2006-11-30

The high style of Casino Royale and the James Bond film series as a whole is marking a menswear trend–reports the LA Daily News.

‘Whenever there’s a new James Bond, whether it was Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton or Pierce Brosnan, the movie reflects the mood of the times,’ said Tyler Thoreson, executive editor of men.style.com, the online site for GQ and Details magazines.

‘It’s telling that the current Bond is going back to Savile Row tailoring and classic looks. The Bond from the late ’80s looked less traditional. What’s current now is to embrace tradition, but with a twist.’

‘The thing that’s appealing about Bond is that he’s a man’s man,’ Thoreson said. ‘You think about how Sean Connery as James Bond would’ve worn a pocket square. It’s subtle; he doesn’t look like he’s trying too hard.’

The sales for suits for special occasions and sports coats is on the increase. ‘The moment we’re in is that it’s far more aesthetically pleasing and stylish to wear suits. Men have a renewed appreciation for the finer things and elegance. The biggest trend is the mash-up between high and low fashion.’

  7. Interview With David Arnold: Back In Bond

    By Devin Zydel on 2006-11-30

Soundtrack.net features an excellent interview with composer David Arnold, in which he discusses the new Casino Royale score, the title songs, his ‘Shaken & Stirred’ album, working with orchestrator Nicholas Dodd, and much more…

When asked if he was given more freedom for the Casino Royale score, as the film was the first 007 mission, Arnold said: ‘You still have the job of scoring the film that is in front of you, and not one perhaps you wished had been made, or preferred had been made. Ultimately, I found it more satisfying because for the first time in a long time, it felt like there was an element of truth to the piece–even though it was ultimately a fantasy. I can really only credit the screenplay and Martin Campbell’s direction of Daniel Craig for that…’

‘It was me playing the guitar at the end; I used a Gibson ES135, and a Fender Twin amp,’ said Arnold of the final Casino Royale track: “The Name’s Bond… James Bond.” ‘It’s a little treat I save for myself at the end of every Bond movie. I didn’t do it on Tomorrow Never Dies, as Alex Gifford from The Propellerheads wanted to do it on “Backseat Driver”, and I didn’t have the heart to say no…’

When asked how much of an influence John Barry had on the Casino Royale score, as well as if there were any nods/in-jokes, Arnold answered: ‘Barry is the sound of Bond as far as I’m concerned, and it’s amazing how much like a Bond film it becomes when that sound appears. Even the other composer who have worked on Bond films over the years have tipped their hat to him. I try to reach out a little every time, but you can’t stray too far. I write the only way I know how for the film that’s in front of me, alongside the requirements of the producers, studio and director. We end up with what I have done.’

On Chris Cornell and “You Know My Name,” Arnold comments: ‘Chris was suggested to us by Lia Vollack, the head of music at Sony Pictures. He came over to Prague to meet us all and look at some footage. He was blown away by it, as was I, and we discussed what kind of song we had in mind. He was a generous and easy collaborator. I didn’t want to throw a load of ideas at him, so we agreed to go away and write some ideas ourselves, and then get back together to see what we had done. We had sort of written the same song independently of each other, so we put it together in a few days back in London…’

‘I have always told Eon Productions that I don’t expect to be asked back as a matter of fact, and I don’t take it for granted that I will,’ says Arnold. ‘I will be there for as long as they ask me back–I remain committed to the character, and will do it forever if they ask me.’

    By Devin Zydel on 2006-11-29

Daniel Craig bonded with several Japanese fans along with model Hinano Yoshikawa at a pre-screening event at a Tokyo movie theater on Thursday night–reports the Mainichi Daily News.

Visiting the country for the first time in order to promote Casino Royale, Craig said: ‘It’s always been a dream of mine to come to Japan, to Tokyo, so I hope to see as much as I can over the next four days.’

When I was a boy (I dreamed of becoming Bond), but never as an adult. I’m afraid it was not an acting dream of mine,’ Craig said. ‘But when I was a child, I wanted to fly to the moon as well.’
