  5. Casino Royale: A 'Fantastic' Finished Result, Says Wilson

    By Devin Zydel on 2006-11-26

A new video from the world premiere of Casino Royale, which took place on 14 November in London, has appeared online at YouTube.

Producer Michael G. Wilson was interviewed on the finished result of Casino Royale, to which he said: ‘I think the finished result is fantastic. I think we’ve got a Bond [in Daniel Craig] for the next decade and maybe beyond. It’s certainly a rebooting of the franchise and Barbara and I are absolutely delighted the way it turned out. It couldn’t have turned out better.’

‘I think we’d gotten a little too fantastical with the last film, Die Another Day,’ says Wilson when asked why they decided to shake up the 007 formula. ‘It was necessary to bring it back down to earth and we got a chance to make Casino Royale. We’d gotten the rights after 40 years and here’s the chance to do it the proper way.’

When questioned about what exactly the formula will be for Bond 22 and beyond, Wilson said: ‘I think so… so far it looks like the public loves it.’

  6. Two Minutes Of Casino Royale Cut For India Release

    By Devin Zydel on 2006-11-26

The Telegraph reports with a new article on the cuts that Casino Royale received for its release in India.

The cuts consisted of two love scenes as well as the torture sequence between Daniel Craig’s James Bond and Le Chiffre played by Mads Mikkelsen. The former two scenes were reduced to quick flashes, while the latter was edited down by approximately 60%–a total of two minutes cut from the finished film.

What is interesting to note is that the censor did not demand such cuts be made, but rather that distributor Sony Pictures Releasing India (SPRI) suggested them in order to earn the U/A certificate (thus bringing in a larger audience). Vinayak Azaad, regional officer for the censor board in Mumbai, said: ‘We are not into moral policing. The cuts were suggested by Columbia Pictures. As a purely adult movie, we had cleared it earlier without any cuts.’

Lalit Chetnani, chief finance officer for Sony Pictures, the distributors for Columbia, confirms: ‘We volunteered the cutting of the scenes as we wanted a U/A certificate for the film to open it to a larger audience. The censor board suggested that we reduce the intimate scenes to flashes and the torture scene by 60 percent. The censor board, satisfied with what we had cut, gave us the U/A certificate.’

‘We are a layered society, so what may be taken easily by an urban audience may not go down well with those watching the same film in suburban areas. Films such as James Bond are dubbed in several regional languages, and dubbed versions have a far greater reach in India than their English versions, and that often calls for constant vigilance,’ said Sharmila Tagore, chairman of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).

CBn previously reported that Casino Royale set a record opening in India, where it had the best opening weekend for any foreign film in the country.

  7. International Attention For Casino Royale's Mads Mikkelsen

    By Devin Zydel on 2006-11-26

Mads Mikkelsen, who plays the villainous Le Chiffre in Casino Royale is now receiving international attention, reports Variety.

‘Nobody knows who I am here, so it’s definitely starting over in the sense of being known. But I’ve been doing this for a while now, so that’s fine,’ he says. In addition to his role in Casino Royale, Mikkelsen made his American film debut in King Arthur and was considered for co-starring roles in both North Country and The Da Vinci Code.

However, it was his role in the film Open Hearts that brought him to the attention of producer Barbara Broccoli. ‘We had to be sure that he could be a worthy opponent to James Bond,’ she says. ‘I saw Mads in Open Hearts and was impressed with his power and strength onscreen.’

‘It definitely put him on the radar with people who didn’t already know him,’ says his L.A. rep, Sandra Chang of Industry Entertainment. ‘The way this town works, everything is by list, and suddenly you wind up higher on the list.’

Mikkelsen, who has currently not chosen his next American film project, says: ‘I still have Denmark, and I’m definitely going to live and work there for the rest of my life. Whatever happens outside of Denmark is just icing on the cake for me.’

  9. Barbara Broccoli Discusses Casino Royale And The 007 Series

    By Devin Zydel on 2006-11-24

Producer Barbara Broccoli has spoken to iFMagazine on the James Bond series and the newest entry, Daniel Craig’s debut in Casino Royale.

‘I think that over the years the films have had a bit of battering by people about that because in fact when you look at the early films the women were very extraordinary for the ’60’s,’ says Broccoli. ‘They were pilots and tough and strong women who did extraordinary things who were sexual and had an equal sort of sexual appetite. They weren’t the wilting flowers. I think that what happened was that maybe in the ’70’s and ’80’s it became more window dressing. We had groups of girls in bikinis sitting around swimming pool, and I think that’s where we go that sort of attention.’

One thing that set Casino Royale apart from the previous James Bond films was the absense of the usual naked girls in the main title sequence. Broccoli explains: ‘Well, he’s been among girls in the opening sequence before, on this one, we felt, since we’re telling the story of him becoming a Double 0, and you see the two killings and he becomes a Double 0–the black and white is supposed to be his life before.’

‘Once he becomes a Double 0 everything explodes around him. We thought that it would be better to have him in the sequence to explain that this is now what his life is going to be like.’

On the casting of Eva Green as the enigmatic Vesper Lynd, Broccoli said: ‘We had seen Eva Green in Kingdom Of Heaven and The Dreamers and we thought that she was fantastic. The thing is that this character of Vesper, in Bond lore she is the most important character because she affects his life forever. So we had to cast it really well. She had to be alluring and beautiful. She had to be a great actress, but she had to have this kind of mystery about her. She has to be a kind of enigma because he falls in love with her and instinctively he knows that there is something missing, there is something wrong and he can’t quite put his finger on it. It’s a very difficult role to cast, and we’d seen Eva and we called up and they said, “No, she’s not available. She’s doing a film in France.” We started looking at a lot of people and no one just seemed right. I kept saying to the casting director, “Just ring her agent every week.” And this went on for months and months.’

‘Eventually they said, “Well, the film may not happen.” It was one of those European finance films and sometimes they’re tricky to get together, and so I said, “Please, please get her in.” I felt like she had to do it. It was just fate that at the end, her other film, the dates moved and we were already shooting. She came to Prague and we were all kind of anxious because sometimes when you meet someone it isn’t exactly what you thought. She walked in and Martin [Campbell] and Michael [Wilson] and I went, “Oh, my God. She’s it.” Then she came in and read with Daniel and he was like, “Oh, we’ve got to have her.” So it was fate that things shifted and she was able to do it.’

One rumour that has been circulating regarding Bond 22 is that Green’s Vesper Lynd will return as a pre-recorded message to Craig’s Bond in the film. Broccoli commented: ‘There is a rumor circulating that she’s in the next film. The fact is that the impact that she has on him in this film may be referred to in the next film, but we’re still working on the script. But she doesn’t come back to life.’

Continuing on the subject of Bond 22 and beyond, the plan is to ‘continue along in the way that we’ve set Bond up on this sort of new story, a contemporary story of him moving forward,’ says Broccoli.
