Fans Decide Young Bond Book 3 Title

The Young Bond Dossier reports that the secret event location where author Charlie Higson will announce the title for Young Bond Book 3 on 3 January has been announced: Waterstone’s, Piccadilly, Europe’s largest bookstore.

As of today, the title of the third Young Bond novel–which was chosen from Double Or Die, N.E.M.E.S.I.S or The Deadlock Cipher–has been chosen. All those who voted online were entered into a competition to win tickets to the announcement event.

What it also interesting to note is that early copies of Young Bond Book 3 will come in sealed foil packaging in order to keep the title secret. Those who pre-order have a chance at obtaining one of these rare editions.

Bond Authors Pick Their Favourite 007 Films

With the world premiere of Casino Royale just around the corner with only days to go, This Is London has collected together reviews from several film critics and Bond autbors (including Charlie Higson, Samantha Weinberg, and Simon Winder) of their personal favourite James Bond films…

Charlie Higson – You Only Live Twice

Charlie Higson, author of the current Young Bond series, which includes SilverFin and Blood Fever, cites 1967’s You Only Live Twice as his personal favourite.

‘My favourite is You Only Live Twice (1967). It’s probably not the best Bond movie, but I was nine when it came out and I remember being absolutely obsessed by it.’

‘The script was by Fleming’s friend Roald Dahl and it was the first Bond movie to deviate significantly from the book, which was no bad thing as it was not one of Fleming’s best. Dahl picked out a few elements–the Japanese setting, the volcano, Bond working alongside the Japanese secret service with their ninja tactics–and spun them off into an outrageous fantasy.’

Samantha Weinberg – On Her Majesty’s Secret Service

Samantha Weinberg, author (writing as Kate Westbrook) of the Moneypenny Diaries series (which includes Guardian Angel and Secret Servant, the latter just out this month) chooses 1969’s On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.

‘An unfashionable choice, perhaps, but it’s the one in which, in 1969, 007 is played by Australian model George Lazenby–who even if he wasn’t a bad actor, would have failed simply by not being Connery.’

‘It still makes me gasp and laugh and, uniquely among Bond films, cry. The plot is the closest to Fleming’s original story, in all its imaginative preposterousness. There is a great ski chase, some realistic fights, a sharp script and, in Blofeld and his sidekick Irma Bunt, gloriously overblown villains.’

Simon Winder – From Russia With Love

Simon Winder, author of The Man Who Saved Britain: A Personal Journey into the Disturbing World of James Bond, which was released earlier this year says 1963’s From Russia With Love was the best.

‘From Russia With Love stands head and shoulders above the other Bond films. It is the only one to offer a wide range of really juicy acting roles. It is the only one to use a great location (a blue-grey, grimy Istanbul) in a non-postcard way. It has some spectacular sets by Syd Cain–the Spectre training camp, the Venetian chess-contest palazzo, Blofeld’s boat. The theme song is pretty awful, but John Barry’s orchestration comes to the rescue.’

'The Moneypenny Diaries: Secret Servant' Released

Previously announced by CBn back in May of 2006, the second volume of Samantha Weinberg’s (writing as Kate Westbrook) The Moneypenny Diaries trilogy, The Moneypenny Diaries: Secret Servant has been released in the UK.

The author previously revealed some details as to what fans can expect in volume 2: ‘there are a couple of on-going story lines that I am bound to follow—Miss Moneypenny is going to keep on her father’s trail, for instance, there has to be some resolution over the Prenderghast affair and, of course, Bond does return, with a bang, at the beginning of The Man With the Golden Gun. I don’t want to give too much else away, but she will definitely be getting out of the office again, and probably heading eastwards, towards the Iron Curtain.’

The Moneypenny Diaries: Secret Servant can now be ordered from amazon.co.uk at a discounted price of £11.21. The official blurb runs:

Ian Fleming James Bond Reprints Now Available

All 14 reprints of the James Bond 007 novels by Ian Fleming are now shipping from amazon.co.uk.

All 14 of the 007 novels now feature the retro cover artwork created by Roseanne Serra and Richie Fahey which was used for the 2002/2003 Penguin US editions. They also feature brand new introductions by a collection of different authors. The complete list is: Jeffery Deaver, Louise Welsh, Michael Dibdin, Jonathan Kellerman, Charlie Higson, Simon Winder, Ben Schott, Barry Eisler, David Wolstencroft, Nick Stone, Val McDermid, Mo Hayder, Charles Cumming, and Robert Ryan.

In addition, Penguin Modern Classics, which released 10 of the Ian Fleming Bond novels back in mid-2004, completed their series on 5 October 2006 with the addition of For Your Eyes Only, The Spy Who Loved Me, The Man With The Golden Gun, and Octopussy And The Living Daylights. Charlie Higson On His Young Bond Working Titles

Charlie Higson has spoken to The Times about the process of moving from working to final titles for his Young Bond novels.

Higson says that for his first Young Bond novel, SilverFin, he ‘the idea of going for something that in no way echoed Fleming. My suggestion of Out of Breath was swiftly dismissed, however.’

As previously reported in the Charlie Higson CBn interview, SilverBack,
SilverSkin, SilverHead, and SilverFist were also discussed, before finally settling on SilverFin. ‘It sounds Bondian, it’s mysterious and, let’s face it, it’s not a million miles from Goldfinger,’ says Higson.

In the case of Blood Fever, Double M was Higson’s working title, but was reportedly not exciting enough for the publishers.

For the case of his latest novel, currently titled Young Bond Book 3, Higson reveals that it was the most difficult to name–before the idea for a competition for the fans came about.

Another interesting aspect of the article on The Times is that it reveals some unused Fleming titles not commonly heard before: The Sardonyx Society, The Different Drummer, Choice of Weapons, and Mobile Butcher’s Service.

'Blood Fever' Limited Editions Appearing Online

As previously reported on CBn, a limited edition hardback of Charlie Higson’s second Young Bond novel, Blood Fever would be published in October 2006. For those who won’t have direct access to this Young Bond release in UK bookstores, copies are now appearing online at eBay.

This upcoming release follows the 2005 release of the limited edition hardback of SilverFin. The Blood Fever edition is once again be a UK Waterstones bookstore exclusive. A picture of the cover of this Blood Fever limited edition can be viewed here on the Young Bond Dossier.

Only 999 copies published, all numbered and signed by Charlie Higson (so, once again every Bond fan will be searching for the elusive #007 copy).

2003 Reprint Of First Three John Gardner 007 Novels

Every two months a James Bond 007 novel is chosen for the club members to read. A thread is posted in the club forums listing locations on where you can find the novel. Discussions about the book will go on as the book is read and when it is finished. Another thread will be created so that club members can post their review and give a rating on the current book.

All fans of the Literary Bond are eligible for membership. All you need to do to sign up is register on the CBn Forums (it’s free and only takes a minute) and then post your name in the sign up thread.

The Book Club’s Seventeenth Book

Currently we are progressing though the James Bond 007 novels in chronological order, since quite a number of members are using the club as an opportunity to read the books for the very first time. The club has just finished all fourteen of the Ian Fleming novels as well as the one-time-only Bond novel by Kingsley Amis, Colonel Sun. Most recently, the club moved onto the John Gardner era, and now continues with his second novel: For Special Services.

'For Your Eyes Only, James'

The Young Bond Dossier reported yesterday with an exciting scoop for the literary 007 fans.

The November issue of the UK magazine Tatler features a James Bond/Miss Moneypenny short story title For Your Eyes Only, James by Moneypenny Diaries author Samantha Weinberg.

The story runs at about 3,000 words and is centered on a weekend getaway for Bond and Moneypenny at Royale-les-Eaux in 1956 (which was also featured in Fleming’s first 007 novel, Casino Royale). Ms. Weinberg describes the story as ‘fun in a rather risque manner.’

James Bond-related short stories are a somewhat uncommon occurrence. The most recent one was Raymond Benson’s ‘Live At Five,’ which appeared in a 1999 TV Guide issue.

Young Bond Book 3 Proofs Appearing Online

While it was only announced a few days ago that the title of the third Young Bond adventure by Charlie Higson would be up to the fans, proofs for the new novel are already appearing online.

Fans To Decide Young Bond Book 3 Title

As was the case for SilverFin and Blood Fever previously, rare advanced proof editions of Higson’s newest Young Bond novel (to be titled Double Or Die, N.E.M.E.S.I.S or The Deadlock Cipher) are currently up for bidding here on eBay.

Uncorrected proofs/Advanced reading copies are sent out in advance of a book’s retail release and are almost always more difficult to obtain and more valuable. They sometimes contain differences in plot when compared to the final release. In the case of the US SilverFin proof, a completely different cover was featured, making it all the more coveted by collectors.
