  2. Creditors seek leads for MGM studio

    By Devin Zydel on 2010-06-03

BusinessWeek – An unusual casting call has attracted some of Hollywood’s biggest moguls. The role: rescuer of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, the film studio struggling under $3.7 billion in debt left over from a 2005 buyout.

Former News Corp. President Peter Chernin and Jonathan Dolgen, Viacom’s onetime Hollywood chief, recently auditioned for the job. The decision makers will be MGM’s creditors, who must figure out whether it makes more financial sense to sell to Time Warner, the high bidder in a March auction, or to run the studio themselves. MGM, owner of franchises that include James Bond and Pink Panther, is suffering from a lack of hits and the industrywide slump in DVD sales.

The lenders, which include Highland Capital Management and Anchorage Advisors, already have learned one of Hollywood’s first lessons: Never bet your own money on the movie business. Loans that traded at 65 percent of face value in January changed hands for as little as 43 percent in late May—valuing the company at $1.6 billion. That’s close to Time Warner’s $1.5 [b]illion high bid, according to people with knowledge of the auction. If the creditors decide to turn it down and go into show business themselves, they may have to put up some $500 million to jump-start production.

“They’re trying to understand how they do it,” says Clark Hallren, managing partner of the Los Angeles-based entertainment advisory Clear Scope Partners. “Do we need to keep domestic theatrical distribution? Do we continue to outsource home-video distribution? What kind of movies should we make?”

Delays in resolving MGM’s fate have further clouded its outlook. Producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael Wilson, who co-own the lucrative 007 brand with MGM, suspended production on the 23rd Bond film in April, citing “uncertainty” about the studio’s future. On May 30, director Guillermo del Toro bailed from MGM’s upcoming The Hobbit, a J.R.R. Tolkien movie. MGM shares the rights to The Hobbit with Warner Bros. “The film business can be awfully seductive,” said former Universal Studios Chairman Frank Biondi, who advised some of the private equity investors who bought MGM for $5 billion in 2005. “I told them then that they had a melting ice cube.”

The Broccoli family has urged Warner Bros. to stay in the bidding, said three people with knowledge of the situation. Scott Rowe, a spokesman for Warner Bros., declined to comment, as did Susie Arons, an outside spokeswoman for MGM. Stephanie Wenborn, a spokeswoman for Broccoli and Wilson’s London-based Eon Productions, also declined to comment.

With new management, the creditors hope to boost production, cut costs, and eventually seek a price of more than $2 billion for the studio, said two people who have discussed the plan with them. Finding ways to maximize MGM’s value won’t be easy, says Mark Patricof, managing partner of investment bank MESA. “There are not that many new faces out there with a lot of new ideas for MGM to consider,” he says.

Patricof says the creditors should instead sell off MGM’s assets, including its rights to the Stargate TV series. The Bond franchise could fetch $750 million alone, according to Douglas Lowell, who advises independent film companies on film financing. Its last five installments averaged $461 million in worldwide ticket sales. Whatever the outcome, the creditors aren’t the only ones looking to get paid. Actor Tom Cruise, who signed on with MGM in 2006 and helped raise $500 million to produce films, owns a 30 percent stake of MGM’s United Artists film unit, according to one former MGM executive. “Tom is protected and will be fine,” says Cruise’s attorney, Bert Fields.

The bottom line: MGM’s valuable franchises make creditors believe they can profit by reviving the storied studio. It won’t be easy.

  3. Sam Mendes remains committed to Bond 23

    By Devin Zydel on 2010-06-03

The never-ending MGM studio sale may have put the production of Bond 23 on hold, but it won’t keep Sam Mendes away forever.

    Sam Mendes

    Sam Mendes

Citing an update on Deadline, IGN reports that the Oscar-winning director plans to reassociate with the James Bond film once it gets back on track.

Mendes has been associated with the 23rd Bond film since January of this year, when it was reported that he was in talks with the producers to direct. Since then, he has reportedly been attached to the project as a ‘consultant’ as no director announcements have come from Eon Productions.

As the MGM sale has put Bond 23 on ice for now, Mendes is moving ahead on other projects, including a Charlie and the Chocolate Factory stage musical and the Focus Features drama On Chesil Beach.

However, the Deadline report then adds: ‘But Mendes remains committed to the Bond film and intends to direct it once the MGM ownership situation gets sorted out.’

Whether or not Mendes actually does end up directing Bond 23 remains to be seen…

  4. Crush Design creates Project X promotional website

    By Devin Zydel on 2010-06-02

Crush Design has created a website to promote the new James Bond novel, which will be published in 2011.

    Jeffery Deaver's 'Project X'

    Jeffery Deaver’s Project X

The Project X site, which can be found at www.jamesbondprojectx.com, features a count-down to the book’s launch, information about the author Jeffery Deaver and facts about the original novels written by the late Ian Fleming.

Crush was appointed by Hodder & Stoughton at the beginning of this month on the strength of similar projects that the consultancy has worked on, says Hodder & Stoughton director of digital marketing Kelly Edgson-Wright.

Hodder & Stoughton briefed Crush to create a flexible site that could be added to during the run-up to the book’s launch in May next year. Edgson-Wright says, ‘We want to be able to update the site regularly, engage with social media and interact with the fans’.

The secretive nature of the project has affected the look and feel of the site, says Crush senior designer Chris Pelling. He says, ‘At this point we’re dealing with such little information that we went for a data-style look that was really stripped back.’

The grey and turquoise colour palette was chosen to fit the data-inspired look. Pelling says, ‘We’ve focused on the modern spy, not one from the 1950s. It’s not girls and smoking guns.’

Jeffery Deaver’s Project X will be published by Hodder & Stoughton in the UK and by Simon & Schuster in the US on 28 May 2011.

    By Devin Zydel on 2010-06-01

James Bond’s 1964 Aston Martin DB5, dubbed by auto auctioneers RM Auctions on Tuesday as the “world’s most famous car,” will go under the hammer in London in October and is expected to fetch over $5 million.

It is the first time the distinctive silver-colored car has been available to the public to buy.

It is one of two, and the sole remaining, of the original “007” DB5s that appeared on screen with Sean Connery behind the wheel in Goldfinger and Thunderball, RM Auctions said in a statement.

The model comes complete with its “Q-Branch” gadgets including machine guns, bullet-proof shield, revolving number plates, tracking device, removable roof panel, oil slick sprayer, nail spreader and smoke screen.

Several of the gadgets are fully operational, although the machine guns are not real.

The car is being sold by U.S. radio broadcaster Jerry Lee, who convinced the Aston Martin Lagonda factory to sell it for $12,000 in 1969, becoming its first and only ex-factory owner.

It has remained in his possession and has rarely been seen publicly over the past 40 or so years. Lee plans to use the proceeds from the sale for the Jerry Lee Foundation.

It will be auctioned on 27 October.

  9. A BAFTA tribute to James Bond director Lewis Gilbert

    By Devin Zydel on 2010-05-30

From Reach for the Sky and Alfie to the James Bond Films, Educating Rita and Shirley Valentine, director Lewis Gilbert’s remarkable career in the British film industry spans over seven decades.

'All My Flashbacks: The Autobiography of Lewis Gilbert'

All My Flashbacks: The Autobiography of Lewis Gilbert

In an exclusive BAFTA video, Gilbert discusses his lifelong experiences in the entertainment industry, beginning with his earliest role as a child actor at the tender age of five. He goes on to talk about the lucky breaks and hard work that led to the fast establishment of his career during an era when “cinema was King”.

Talking onstage to friend and colleague Julie Walters, he explains how his early wartime pictures were influenced by his own experiences serving in the Air Force during WW1. After experinecing far-reaching success with Alfie in the 1960’s his work became became increasingly fashionable and he talks about landing the director chair for three Bond movies during the Roger Moore era.

In a touching tribute, Walters (who worked with Gilbert on Educating Rita) says, “Your life touched mine and changed it forever”. An array of similarly enthusiastic and emotional sentiments from colleagues and friends provide insight into the true character of a man who is today considered one of the most distinguished directors in British cinema.

Considering what he has learnt of the film industry in the course of his career, Lewis Gilbert offers this piece sound advice:

All My Flashbacks: The Autobiography of Lewis Gilbert

The filming of this interview coincided with the release of Lewis Gilbert’s autobiography, All My Flashbacks. In it Gilbert recounts tales of his experiences working with such diverse personalities as Laurence Olivier, Alfred Hitchcock, Michael Caine, Sean Connery, Roger Moore, Liza Minnelli and, of course, Julie Walters. Gilbert also shares the secrets behind some legendary movies, revealing the sometimes uncomfortable truth about what goes on behind the scenes.
