  1. A shocking story for Bond 23

    Peter Morgan

    Peter Morgan

After weeks and weeks of more or less silence regarding what 007 fans can expect from the 23rd James Bond adventure, a new interview with screenwriter Peter Morgan reveals some slight bits of information.

Currently situated in Vienna, Austria, Morgan was at work on the Bond 23 script from July to October of this year.

While cautioning to the local press that he couldn’t discuss a great deal about the film, he did describe it as ‘a shocking story’.

Morgan further described his coming to terms with the levels of excitement and anticipation that a new James Bond film creates. He states: ‘There is a level of hysteria that I haven’t seen before. [Bond] is a magnet for publicity—everyone wants to know what is going on with the new film.’

Unfortunately, it was also revealed that work on Daniel Craig’s third 007 outing has been put on hold until February 2010 as a result of the ongoing sale of the MGM studio.

While no specific release date has been announced by Eon Productions, it is strongly expected that Bond 23 will arrive in theatres sometime in late 2011. As previously reported on CommanderBond.net, Craig was quoted as saying that work is expected to commence in late 2010 in order to be ready for a 2011 release. This timeline was further supported by additional comments from Dame Judi Dench.

Wilson on why and how they came to revamp and re-energize the franchise following on from 2002’s Die Another Day. Craig’s forthcoming Bond 23 is also briefly brought up for discussion, although both producers frustratingly remain tight-lipped about what exactly fans can expect.

Organizers of the 60th Berlin International Film Festival say Roman Polanski’s latest movie, The Ghost Writer, will have its premiere at the event in February.

Polanski’s movie was among a first batch of entries in the festival’s main competition that was announced Tuesday. The event runs from Feb. 11-21 and is the first of the year’s major European film festivals.

In the film, Pierce Brosnan stars as a former British prime minister who’s writing his memoirs with the help of a ghostwriter, played by Ewan McGregor. It’s Polanski’s first film since 2005’s Oliver Twist.

The 76-year-old director is currently under house arrest in Switzerland, where he awaits possible extradition to the U.S. on a 32-year-old charge of sexual misconduct.

  4. MGM sends out prospectus, process going slow

    By Devin Zydel on 2009-12-19

NEW YORK (Reuters) – First-round bids for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer will come in later than initially expected because negotiations over confidentiality agreements have slowed down the sale process, sources familiar with the matter said on Thursday.

MGM, the famed film studio that said in November it was exploring a potential sale, has sent out a sales prospectus to all the parties who signed its non-disclosure agreement, including Time Warner Inc (TWX.N) and Lions Gate Entertainment (LGF.N), the sources said.

But getting potential bidders to sign the NDAs has taken a while because MGM, which is owned by a group of private equity and media companies, wanted to restrict the ability of buyers to talk directly to MGM’s creditors, one of the sources said.

MGM, which is owned by a group including private equity firms Providence Equity Partners and TPG TPG.UL, and media companies Sony Corp (6758.T) and Comcast Corp (CMCSA.O), is struggling with nearly $4 billion in debt.

Its creditors are waiting to see how high bidders value the company. If the initial valuations come in too low, the creditors might decide to keep the company and restructure it, two of the sources said.

MGM has not set a deadline for the first round of bids yet, even though potential bidders had expected to put in offers before Christmas, the sources said.

MGM sent out non-disclosure agreements to about 20 interested parties in November, sources had previously told Reuters.

The companies that received the non-disclosure agreements included News Corp (NWSA.O), which has not signed the document yet, two of the sources said.

MGM, Lions Gate and Time Warner declined comment. News Corp was not immediately available for comment.

Liberty Media Corp (LINTA.O) Chief Executive Greg Maffei said earlier this month that his company would look at the Hollywood studio and library assets of MGM.

Maffei said the company would look at MGM for a possible transaction but added the assets are not a “must-have” for its Liberty Starz unit. He was speaking at a UBS Media investor conference in New York.

MGM, whose film library includes James Bond titles, has been setting up a virtual data room to give bidders access to information, the sources said.

    FORBEARANCE EXTENDED

MGM’s lenders have extended a debt forbearance until January 31, which exempts it from interest payments of an undisclosed amount as it tries to develop a long-term business plan.

At the time it announced a possible sale, MGM said its other options included operating as a stand-alone entity or forming strategic partnerships.

The studio faces debt obligations of $3.7 billion stemming from its 2005 buyout, plus payments on a $250 million revolving credit facility due April 2010.

It was purchased from majority owner Kirk Kerkorian for $2.85 billion by a group including private equity firms Providence Equity Partners; TPG; DLJ Merchant Banking Partners, a unit of Credit Suisse (CSGN.VX); and Quadrangle Group; and media companies Sony and Comcast. The group also assumed a debt of $2 billion.

Film financing experts have said MGM had been funding operations largely through library cash flow and access to $500 million in financing set up for its United Artists label, which is partly owned by movie star Tom Cruise.

  6. News Corp. said to be at impasse on possible MGM bid

    By Devin Zydel on 2009-12-18

(Bloomberg) — News Corp., owner of the Twentieth Century Fox film studio, is at an impasse in talks on a possible bid for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Inc., according to a person with knowledge of the situation.

News Corp., based in New York, is balking at terms closely held MGM is seeking from potential bidders ahead of a formal auction, according to the person, who asked not to be identified because the talks are private.

Burdened by about $4 billion in debt, Los Angeles-based MGM put itself up for sale last month. Creditors hope to get at least $2 billion from a single buyer or sell assets separately, people with knowledge of the situation said in November.

News Corp. objects to provisions of a non-disclosure agreement that could subject the company to legal liability, the person said yesterday.

Chris Petrikin, a spokesman for Twentieth Century Fox, declined to comment. Susie Arons, an outside spokeswoman for MGM, said she couldn’t comment on individual negotiations.

MGM is controlled by Providence Equity Partners Inc. and TPG. Comcast Corp. and Sony each own 20 percent, while DLJ Merchant Partners holds 7 percent and Quadrangle Group holds 3 percent. Led by Providence, the group bought MGM for $5 billion in 2005. Sony and Comcast have written off their investments.

Time Warner Inc., News Corp. and Qualia Capital LLC are among the parties that may be interested in MGM, owner of the “James Bond” franchise and a library of 4,100 films, people familiar with the situation said last month.

Lions Gate Entertainment Corp. expressed interest in purchasing MGM at a Nov. 12 conference in New York, and Liberty Media Corp. Chairman John Malone said his company would look at the studio.

News Corp., the media company controlled by Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Rupert Murdoch, gained 13 cents to $13.35 yesterday in Nasdaq Stock Market trading. The Class A shares have advanced 47 percent this year.

  8. Ian Fleming's 007 manuscripts to be part of Watches, James Bond Watches exhibit

    By Devin Zydel on 2009-12-16

AUTHOR IAN FLEMING’S ORIGINAL JAMES BOND MANUSCRIPTS TO BE PART OF UPCOMING EXHIBIT AT WATCH & CLOCK MUSEUM

    Ian Fleming

    Ian Fleming

Ian Fleming carefully kept the original manuscripts for his James Bond thrillers, in addition to pre-publication book proofs and author’s copies that include summary notes in his own handwriting. For researchers and fans, these represent incredible views into the origins of the 007 character and the mind of his fascinating creator.

A sampling from among these one-of-a-kind texts will be displayed as part of the Bond Watches, James Bond Watches exhibit at the National Watch & Clock Museum, opening June 17, 2010. This loan was made possible by special arrangement with the Lilly Library at Indiana University, Bloomington, IN.

“We can tell a lot by looking at the actual pages as Mr. Fleming hammered them out at the keys of his Imperial portable typewriter,” notes Dell Deaton of JamesBondWatches.com and guest curator for the Bond Watches exhibit. “The ‘Rolex’ reference in Live and Let Die, for example, is first-draft. That, then, specifically dates it to February or March of 1953—and establishes a context for examining the role that his friend Commander Jacques Cousteau may have had in providing input on the brand.

Thunderball, of course, shows how Ian Fleming created the first Bond gadget-watch, in 1960.

“There’s also what we can see as iterations progress. This National Watch & Clock Museum display, for example, will include four versions of On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, revealing Fleming’s interesting focus on wristwatch-related details,” Deaton continues. “There’s a curious continuity error that started with the manuscript when it was written at Goldeneye and made it all the way into the ‘Uncorrected Proof’ binding, but which was caught and corrected before the first edition book run and serialized publication in Playboy. We’re planning to show this complete progression as part of this special exhibit.”

Ian Fleming’s personal Rolex 1016 Explorer, which served as his basis for the personal James Bond wristwatch he described in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service

The original James Bond manuscripts, author’s first editions, and other materials were acquired by the Lilly Library in 1970. Thus, the Bond Watches, James Bond Watches exhibit will mark the first time in over four decades that the original 007 wristwatch (Ian Fleming’s Rolex 1016 Explorer) and the 1962 manuscript in which it is referenced will be displayed together.

“The National Watch & Clock Museum is extremely grateful to Indiana University and its Lilly Library for the loan of these materials,” Museum Director Noel Poirier adds. “Through the years, we’ve been able to enter into cooperative exchanges such as this with a variety of other institutions, expanding the reach in sharing what we’ve preserved from the history of timekeeping. It allows us to broaden the context of exhibits such as this, showing not just the watches, but the culture and period in which they were important.”

Dell Deaton is the creator-author of JamesBondWatches.com and guest curator for this Bond Watches, James Bond Watches exhibition. He is a member of both the National Watch & Clock Association and American Marketing Association, and a recognized expert on Ian Fleming and James Bond horology. Previously he was elected to a three-year term on the board of directors that governs the Center for Exhibition Industry Research, and served three terms on the editorial advisory board for Exhibitor Publications.

The National Watch and Clock Museum is operated by the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors, Inc., a nonprofit 501(c)(3) association with close to 20,000 members, representing 52 countries. April through November the Museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. December through March hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Discounts are available to seniors, students, AAA members, and groups of 10 or more. Groups of 10 or more are encouraged to call ahead. For more program information, directions, or general Museum information, call 717-684-8261 or visit our website at www.nawcc.org.

    By Devin Zydel on 2009-12-15

Jonathan Pryce, notable in the world of James Bond for his portrayal of media baron Elliot Carver in 1997’s Tomorrow Never Dies, has been awarded a CBE.

    The full press release follows:

    'Tomorrow Never Dies'

    Tomorrow Never Dies

Jonathan Pryce has described his happiness at receiving a CBE from the Prince of Wales.

The versatile actor, equally at home on stage, screen or television, accepted the honour for services to drama.

After the Buckingham Palace investiture ceremony he said: “I’m very honoured and gratified to get the CBE – it’s recognition of the importance of the theatre in Britain and how much it means to the people and economy.”

The 62-year-old Welshman has played a megalomaniac media tycoon in the James Bond film Tomorrow Never Dies, starred in the Pirates Of The Caribbean movies and appeared alongside Madonna in the 1996 film of Evita.

In recent years he has concentrated on his theatre work and is due to appear in a London production of Harold Pinter’s The Caretaker in the New Year.

After graduating from RADA the actor later joined Liverpool’s Everyman Theatre Company where his colleagues were actresses like Alison Steadman and among the house playwrights were Willy Russell and Alan Bleasdale.

His first venture on to New York’s Broadway brought success when his role in Comedians earned him a Tony award and three years later his performance as Hamlet at London’s Royal Court Theatre won him an Olivier Award.

His movie breakthrough came in 1985 playing the hero Sam Lowry in Terry Gilliam’s film Brazil and Pryce teamed up with the director again for the Adventures Of Baron Munchausen in 1988.

Other notable film parts include roles in Ronin (1998) and Stigmata (1999).

This year he starred as the US president in the Hollywood blockbuster GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra.

  10. LIFE.com's unseen James Bond auditions photographs

    By Devin Zydel on 2009-12-14

With December 2009 marking the 40th anniversary of On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, LIFE.com has decided to mark the occasion by releasing a stunning collection of previously unseen audition photographs from the 1969 James Bond film.

30 photos in total, the snapshots chronicle the indepth audition process taken to find a successor to Sean Connery’s 007 after the actor called it quits following 1967’s You Only Live Twice.

Featured contenders include George Lazenby (obviously), John Richardson, Anthony Rogers, Robert Campbell and Hans de Vries alongside several Bond girl hopefuls. Bond fans will also spot OHMSS director Peter Hunt in a few of the shots as well.

Read on to check out the photographs…

    Who Would Be James Bond?

In the early ’60s, movie producers adapting Ian Fleming’s novels about a suave British spy named James Bond plucked a relative unknown, Sean Connery, out of obscurity and offered him the role of a lifetime. And when Connery left the franchise after five movies, the hunt for Bond was on again. LIFE sent photographer Loomis Dean to the final casting sessions for On Her Majesty’s Secret Service (released 40 years ago this week), and the magazine published a handful of those photos. But some of the choicest frame—Bond wannabes suiting up, holding guns, drinking martinis, wooing women—have never been seen…until now. Meet each of the five top candidates (including ultimate choice George Lazenby, bottom right in this composite image), and check out their best moves.

Keep your browsers pointed to the CommanderBond.net main page and our Twitter feed for continued coverage from the world of 007.
