  1. Concert Planned To Honour Dr. No's Byron Lee

    By Devin Zydel on 2007-06-06

According to a report from The Jamaica Observer, a concert honouring Byron Lee is set to take place in Kingston, Jamaica on Saturday, 30 June 2007.

James Bond fans will best know Byron Lee and his band, the Dragonaires, as performers of the song ‘Jump Up’ in Dr. No, which can be heard during the scene at Puss Feller’s early on in the film.

The over 50 years of service to popular music put in by Byron Lee, popularly known as ‘The Dragon’ will again come into focus with the staging of the Honour the Dragon concert, conceptualised by the Friends of Byron Lee Committee. The event will take place on the Lawns of King’s House on Saturday, June 30, 2007, beginning at 9:00 pm.

“Byron Lee has demanded international respect for taking Jamaican/Caribbean culture to musical heights, a man of this cultural stature must be recognised with performances in his honour,” said member of parliament and member of the Friends of Byron Lee Committee, Olivia ‘Babsy’ Grange.

Top artistes from Jamaica and the Caribbean region will honour the pioneering role that the legendary band, Byron Lee and the , played in establishing Jamaican musical talent to the world.

Lee played a pivotal role in the explosion of Jamaican music in the 1960s and 1970s. From the band’s formation in 1956, their international break followed with a performance in the James Bond Film, Dr No (partially filmed in Jamaica); to the stir they created in 1964 at the New York World Fair, where the sound of Jamaica, ska, was taken beyond our shores. Artistes such as Jimmy Cliff, Ken Boothe, and Desmond Dekker accompanied the band. Lee also brought international acts to record in Jamaica, including Jeff Beck, the Rolling Stones and Paul Simon, through his position as head of the Dynamic Sounds studio and the associated label.

Despite his ongoing battle with cancer, Lee (who spoke by telephone to this writer during the 2007 Jamaica Carnival season), says he remains committed to the music and the entertainment industry.

Ticket information and artiste line-up will be announced shortly.

  5. You Know My Name

    By Devin Zydel on 2006-10-31

    You Know My Name

Written by David Arnold and Chris Cornell
    Performed by Chris Cornell

If you take a life do you know what you’ll give?
Odds are, you won’t like what it is
When the storm arrives, would you be seen with me?
By the merciless eyes of deceit?

I’ve seen angels fall from blinding heights
But you yourself are nothing so divine
    Just next in line

Arm yourself because no-one else here will save you
    The odds will betray you
    And I will replace you
You can’t deny the prize it may never fulfill you
    It longs to kill you
    Are you willing to die?

The coldest blood runs through my veins
    You know my name

If you come inside things will not be the same
When you return to the night
And if you think you’ve won
    You never saw me change
The game that we all been playing

I’ve seen diamonds cut through harder men
    Than you yourself
    But if you must pretend
    You may meet your end

Arm yourself because no-one else here will save you
    The odds will betray you
    And I will replace you
You can’t deny the prize it may never fulfill you
    It longs to kill you
    Are you willing to die?

The coldest blood runs through my veins

    Try to hide your hand
    Forget how to feel
    (Forget how to feel)

Life is gone with just a spin of the wheel
    (Spin of the wheel)

Arm yourself because no-one else here will save you
    The odds will betray you
    And I will replace you
You can’t deny the prize it may never fulfill you
    It longs to kill you
    Are you willing to die?

The coldest blood runs through my veins
    You know my name
    You know my name
    You know my name
    You know my name
    You know my name
    You know my name
    You know my name

  6. Moby On His James Bond Theme Remix

    By Devin Zydel on 2006-10-21

American performer Moby has been interviewed about his past and present career on CD Times just in time for the release of his newest album, ‘Go – The Very Best Of Moby.’

For 007 fans, Moby is best remembered for creating one of the most widely known James Bond theme remixes in 1997. It was included as one of the tracks for the Tomorrow Never Dies soundtrack.

‘The truth is I didn’t really want to record a James Bond theme,’ he says. ‘I got asked by the people at MGM/United Artists to record the James Bond theme for Tomorrow Never Dies.’ He goes onto say that had he not been asked, he wouldn’t have ever remixed the theme.

‘[I] feel like the original is perfect, you know, the John Barry original and I think that my version of the James Bond Theme, it’s OK, but it’s certainly not any way nearly as good as the original recording by John Barry.

  7. Royale Score Details Emerge

    By @mrpauldunphy on 2006-10-14

The Sony Music Store seems to have quelled the buzz that Bond music fans were making on the CBn Forum since previous track listings of the Casino Royale Score were released on play.com and HMV UK websites yesterday.

I say quelled because there was a buzz—but it has since stopped—and I say buzz because there was a buzz—but it has since been stopped by the good quelling it received. The buzz in question was regarding the seemingly “incomplete” nature of the tracklisting, but the quelling came in the form of a more rounded, more “official” version on Sony’s online music emporium.

The Sony Music Store now lists twenty-five tracks in the score, seemingly making the CD a more complete collection of David Arnold’s score. Oddly, the film’s theme—Chris Cornell’s ‘You Know My Name’—is not in the track list.

  8. 'The James Bond Songbook' Coming In October

    By Devin Zydel on 2006-10-07

While there has been mention of a few James Bond CD collections being rereleased to cash in on the Casino Royale hype, there is one brand new release coming at the end of the month.

‘The James Bond Songbook’ is a collection of several themes from the James Bond films, but with a jazz twist. The official details state:

A hip and groovy jazz take on the world of James Bond from 1965 – the height of the original Bond mania.

This rare album is seeing its first ever reissue and is taken from the original mastertapes. It is the latest in BGP’s Sound Library series, which is now onto its 3rd volume of filmic instrumental grooves.

The original album used legendary jazz and session bassist Jimmy Bond and contracted his name to James. Bond was a mainstay of the LA scene, playing with jazzers such as Charlie Parker and Elmo Hope, and with Phil Spector, Randy Newman and Frank Zappa (on his Lumpy Gravy project) amongst others.

The group on this CD includes some of the finest jazz talent on the West Coast, including a brilliant horn and reed line-up of Harold Land on tenor, Buddy Collette on flute and tenor and Bobby Bryant on trumpet.

  9. John Barry Not Bonding With The Modern 007

    By Devin Zydel on 2006-10-03

John Barry, composer of a record 11 James Bond films, isn’t bonding with the modern 007, according to a report from the International Express.

‘I haven’t been a Bond fan in a long time,’ he says. ‘I gave up after The Living Daylights in 1987. I had exhausted all my ideas, rung all the changes that were possible. It was a formula that had run its course. The best had been done as far as I was concerned…’

‘There used to be one solid school of people. When that broke down [after Saltzman left the series in the mid-70s], I didn’t know who was running the show anymore. That’s why when you see them on television, you don’t say “Oh no, it’s an old Bond”, you say “Wow, it’s an old Bond, that’s great”‘. ‘Forget it, I’ll watch something else,’ says Barry, when it comes to some of the newer James Bond films.

And while the Academy Award and Grammy-winning composer is still friends with current producer Barbara Broccoli, he will reportedly not be rushing out to see Casino Royale when it is released.
