  1. More 'GoldenEye 007' Re-release Rumblings

    By Matt Weston on 2008-02-04

Just as quickly as rumours emerged that the quintessential James Bond game, GoldenEye 007, was in development for Xbox Live Arcade, they were quashed when reports suggested a deal could not be reached between Nintendo and Microsoft.

Now, a curious article at Xbox Evolved has been posted, which hints the classic first-person shooter may not be entirely dead after all.

Rather than a direct re-release of the game on Xbox Live Arcade, Xbox Evolved’s source has hinted at an new title from GoldenEye 007 developer Rareware that uses many of the same elements, including the same engine.

The website has had a glimpse of several screenshots for the game, which has the working title Bean Project, and reports that it appears very similar to the original. “The achievements for the game seem to fit also,” Xbox Evolved reporter John Olin writes. “One is for becoming a ’00’ agent, another for ‘007’ and another for the now infamous silo mission.” Joanna Dark, the title character of the GoldenEye 007 pseudo-sequel, Perfect Dark appears as a placeholder in the game’s dashboard.

Xbox Evolved speculates Rareware is developing this for release in the event that discussions between Nintendo and Microsoft fall through. According to the site, the two parties are allowing GoldenEye 007 to be released on Nintendo Wii and Xbox Live Arcade on the condition that Rareware will not be involved in the porting of the game to the Wii (instead, the game may be outsourced to one of Nintendo’s other developers).

While Nintendo and Microsoft both declined to comment, a representative for Activision, who currently hold the development rights for the James Bond games, said, “We have nothing to do with a GoldenEye 007 game, I would think that is Nintendo and Microsoft’s deal. Our own Bond game, however, from Treyarch, is powered by the same technology that made [Call of Duty 4] and that, along with Treyarch developers’ [Call of Duty 5] is coming along very nicely.”

Activision’s first James Bond game is said to be an adaptation of the forthcoming movie, Quantum of Solace, due out in November 2008.

  2. James Bond Put On Hold For Xbox Live As 'GoldenEye 007' Stalls

    By Devin Zydel on 2008-01-12

Earlier this week, CommanderBond.net reported that the highly popular James Bond video game, Nintendo 64’s GoldenEye 007, was rumoured to be moving into development for the Xbox Live Arcade.

Unfortunately, K1Bond007 reports that the Bond game has hit a bump in the road.

As previously pointed out, this rumoured transition to Xbox Live was to be treated with some discretion since Nintendo–the original publisher of GoldenEye 007–was not mentioned to be in negotiations with Microsoft, Rareware, MGM Studios and Activision (who now holds the rights to the Bond video games) at the time.

As a result, this new version of GoldenEye 007 has been sidelined due to financial difficulties regarding a deal between Nintendo and Microsoft. The game would have featured the same graphics (despite earlier reports of updates in this category), would have seen less playable characters due to licensing issues with certain actors, and an all-new Xbox Live multiplayer mode.

    Until next time it seems…

  3. 'GoldenEye 007' Rumoured For Xbox Live Arcade

    By Devin Zydel on 2008-01-09

According to an article posted at K1Bond007, sources for XBox Evolved are reporting that the highly popular GoldenEye 007 is planned to be developed for the Xbox Live Arcade.

The site says that an agreement has reportedly been met between Microsoft, Rareware, MGM Studios and Activision (who now holds the rights to the James Bond video games) and the new GoldenEye 007 game would be released before Activision’s first 007 game debuts later this year.

Additionally, this new version of GoldenEye 007 would feature updated graphics and an all-new Xbox Live multiplayer mode.

As K1Bond007 wisely points out, Bond fans should proceed with caution as this is merely a rumour at this stage. Nintendo, who originally published GoldenEye 007, were not even mentioned to be in negotiations with the above companies.

We’ll just have to wait and see…

  4. Beenox Behind Activision's Bond Game For Nintendo Wii

    By Devin Zydel on 2008-01-03

It was first reported on CommanderBond.net back in August 2007 that new James Bond video game licence holder Activision had enlisted the talents of the Treyarch, Beenox and Vicarious Visions studios to develop their first 007 game, which is expected to be released late this year (and speculated to be based off of the Bond 22 film).

The Wiire reports today that Beenox studio is currently working on developing the James Bond game for the Nintendo Wii console.

Said Thomas Wilson, Creative Director for developer Beenox: ‘Right now we’re working on a James Bond Wii title in conjunction with Treyarch and we’re rolling with it because we’re really good at what we’re doing and Activision doesn’t want to send their ports anywhere else.’

He continued: ‘One thing we want to make sure of if we’re making the Wii version is that we absolutely want the controls to be top notch. Although we don’t fully control the original development content because it’s in collaboration with Treyarch, that’s one thing that we can do–make sure we put out a strong Wii title.’

Besides the Wii console, Activision’s first 007 game is also planned to be released on the other next-generation consoles, Windows PC and hand-held platforms.

Bizarre Creations are reportedly on work on the second Bond game from Activision, which will possibly be a racing game.

  5. Bizarre Creations Behind The Wheel Of Activision's Second Bond Game?

    By Matt Weston on 2007-12-11

Word around the web today is that Bizarre Creations, who were recently acquired by Activision, are developing the company’s second James Bond video game.

Gaming site 1UP.com relay a report from the new issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly that suggests Bizarre, best known for Project Gotham Racing, are working on a James Bond project that will “focus a lot on driving”.

In their coverage of the news, K1Bond007 reports that they heard similar rumours about Bizarre developing Activision’s second 007 game.

It was first revealed in November that Activision had two James Bond games in development, while it has been speculated for some time that the first of these will be based upon Bond 22.

The last wholly vehicle-based James Bond game was Electronic Arts’ 2000 effort, 007 Racing, which appeared on Sony PlayStation; however, subsequent instalments from the company have also featured 007 in the driver’s seat.

  6. Activision Merger Makes It World's Largest Video Game Publisher

    By Devin Zydel on 2007-12-02

According to a report from K1Bond007, Activision, the new owner of the James Bond video game licence, will be merging with Blizzard Entertainment owner Vivendi Games to form Activision Blizzard–the largest and most profitable video game publisher in the world (a title that was previously held by former 007 game company Electronic Arts).

As previously reported on CommanderBond.net, Activision has committed themselves to revitalising the James Bond brand and currently have two 007 titles in development, one of them planned to be an adaptation of Bond 22, and due for release in 2008.

Transaction Will Unlock Value of Blizzard Entertainment’s Massively Multiplayer Online Games Business and Will Be Accretive to Stockholders of Activision and Vivendi

Activision, Inc. (NASDAQ: ATVI) and Vivendi (Euronext Paris: VIV) today announced that they have signed a definitive agreement to combine Vivendi Games, Vivendi’s interactive entertainment business — which includes Blizzard Entertainment’s World of Warcraft, the world’s #1 multi-player online role-playing game franchise — with Activision, creating the world’s largest pure-play online and console game publisher. The new company, Activision Blizzard, is expected to have approximately $3.8 billion in pro forma combined calendar 2007 revenues and the highest operating margins of any major third-party video game publisher. On closing of the transaction, Activision will be renamed Activision Blizzard and will continue to operate as a public company traded on NASDAQ under the ticker ATVI.

Activision, one of the world’s leading independent publishers of interactive entertainment, is best known for its top-selling franchises, including Guitar Hero, Call of Duty and the Tony Hawk series, as well as Spider-Man, X-Men, Shrek, James Bond and TRANSFORMERS. Blizzard Entertainment, a division of Vivendi Games, has projected calendar 2007 revenues of $1.1 billion, operating margins of over 40% and approximately $520 million of operating profit. Blizzard owns the #1 multi-player online role-playing game franchise, World of Warcraft, which currently has over 9.3 million subscribers worldwide. Blizzard’s World of Warcraft, Warcraft, StarCraft and Diablo games account for four of the top-five best-selling PC game titles of all time. Vivendi Games also owns popular franchises, including Crash Bandicoot and Spyro. Pro forma for calendar 2007, Activision Blizzard expects to generate approximately 70% of its revenues from owned franchises. As a result of the business combination, Activision Blizzard expects to have the most diversified and broadest portfolio of interactive entertainment assets in its industry, positioning the combined company to capitalize on the continued worldwide growth in interactive entertainment.

Jean-Bernard Lévy, Chairman of the Management Board and Chief Executive Officer of Vivendi stated: “This alliance is a major strategic step for Vivendi and is another illustration of our drive to extend our presence in the entertainment sector. By combining Vivendi’s games business with Activision, we are creating a worldwide leader in a high-growth industry. We are excited about the opportunities for Activision Blizzard as a broader entertainment software platform. We believe this transaction will create significant value for Activision Blizzard and Vivendi stockholders. In Activision, we have found a partner with a highly complementary business and strong operating team. Bobby Kotick and Brian Kelly are industry pioneers, well known for creating shareholder value. The combined strength of the existing management teams at both companies will set the stage for further profitable growth of Activision Blizzard. We look forward to being an active and supportive majority stockholder in a company that is poised to lead the worldwide interactive entertainment industry in the years ahead.”

René Penisson, Member of the Management Board of Vivendi and current Chairman of Vivendi Games, added: “We are very confident that by combining forces, Activision Blizzard will set the highest standards in quality, reputation and profitability, and will bring together the best creative teams in the industry. The combination of this unique product portfolio with highly professional employees gives us great confidence in the growth prospects for Activision Blizzard.”

Said Robert Kotick, Activision’s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer: “This is an outstanding transaction for Activision and our stockholders, as well as a pivotal event in the continuing transformation of the interactive entertainment industry. By combining leaders in mass-market entertainment and subscription-based online games, Activision Blizzard will be the only publisher with leading market positions across all categories of the rapidly growing interactive entertainment software industry and reach the broadest possible audiences. By joining forces with Vivendi Games, we will become the immediate leader in the highly profitable online games business and gain a large footprint in the rapidly growing Asian markets, including China and Korea, while maintaining our leading operating performance across North America and Europe. Activision stockholders will benefit from significantly increased earnings power and the recurring nature and predictability of subscription-based revenues, while also having the opportunity, if they choose, to receive $27.50 per share for a portion of their shares in the post-closing tender offer.”

Kotick continued: “Vivendi Games provides Activision with unique strategic and financial benefits and will allow us to leverage our franchises into emerging online opportunities as Blizzard has done so successfully. Activision has been very focused on margin expansion, and this transaction will meaningfully increase our overall operating margins as we expand our franchises online and in new geographies. Diversifying our revenue base among subscription-based online, console and PC formats, as well as wireless and casual emerging opportunities, gives us the broadest platform to capitalize on industry growth. With Blizzard’s successful franchises, such as World of Warcraft, StarCraft and an exciting pipeline of yet-to-be announced titles, Vivendi Games’ and Blizzard’s management team will join with Activision’s strong and experienced leaders to become an even more powerful force for innovation in online and offline interactive entertainment across a wide range of platforms. This transaction also provides a unique relationship with Universal Music Group – the world’s largest music company – which will benefit Guitar Hero and further extend our sizable leadership position in music-based games.”

Mike Morhaime, President and Chief Executive Officer of Blizzard, added: “Blizzard’s industry-leading PC games business, with a track record of nine consecutive bestsellers and a global subscriber base of more than 9.3 million World of Warcraft players, is an exceptional fit for Activision’s highly profitable console games business. From our interactions with the Activision team, it is clear we have much in common in terms of our approaches to game development and publishing. Above all, we are looking forward to continue creating great games for Blizzard gamers around the world, and we believe this new partnership will help us to do that even better than before.”

    Structure & Terms of Transaction

Under the terms of the agreement, Vivendi Games will be merged with a wholly owned subsidiary of Activision. In the merger, shares of Vivendi Games will be converted into 295.3 million new shares of Activision common stock. Based on the transaction price of $27.50 per share of Activision common stock, this implies a value of approximately $8.1 billion for Vivendi Games. Concurrently with the merger, Vivendi will purchase 62.9 million newly issued shares of Activision common stock at a price of $27.50 per share – a premium of 31% to Activision’s average closing price over the past 20 trading days – for a total of $1.7 billion in cash. As a result of these transactions, Vivendi will own an approximate 52% ownership stake in Activision Blizzard on a fully diluted basis.

Within five business days after closing the transaction, Activision Blizzard will launch a $4 billion all-cash tender offer to purchase up to 146.5 million Activision Blizzard common shares at $27.50 per share. The tender offer will be funded by Activision Blizzard’s cash on hand at closing, including the $1.7 billion in cash received from the Vivendi share purchase. In addition, Vivendi has agreed to acquire from Activision Blizzard additional newly issued shares for up to an additional $700 million of Activision common stock at $27.50 per share, the proceeds of which would also be used to fund the tender offer. Any remaining funds required to complete the tender offer will be borrowed by Activision Blizzard from Vivendi or third-party lenders. If the tender offer is fully subscribed, Vivendi will own an approximate 68% ownership stake in Activision Blizzard on a fully diluted basis.

The transaction is expected to be immediately accretive in its first year post-closing for Activision’s stockholders and slightly accretive for Vivendi’s stockholders. Activision Blizzard is targeting pro forma operating income of $1.1 billion and pro forma earnings per share (EPS) in excess of $1.20 in calendar year 2009. The transaction is expected to be at least $0.20 accretive to Activision stockholders in calendar year 2009.

    Governance

Activision Blizzard’s board of directors will be comprised of eleven members: six directors designated by Vivendi, two Activision management directors and three independent directors who currently serve on Activision’s board of directors. René Penisson, currently a member of the Management Board of Vivendi and Chairman of Vivendi Games, will serve as Chairman of Activision Blizzard. Brian Kelly, currently Co-Chairman of Activision, will serve as Co-Chairman of Activision Blizzard. The three independent directors will be Richard Sarnoff, Robert J. Corti and Robert Morgado. Thomas Tippl, currently Chief Financial Officer of Activision, will be appointed Chief Financial Officer of Activision Blizzard and Jean-Francois Grollemund, currently Chief Financial Officer of Vivendi Games, will be appointed Chief Accounting Officer of Activision Blizzard.

    Conditions to Closing

The transaction has been approved by the boards of directors of Vivendi, Vivendi Games and Activision. The transaction is subject to the approval of Activision’s stockholders and the satisfaction of customary closing conditions and regulatory approvals, including expiration of applicable waiting periods and receipt of applicable approvals under the Hart-Scott-Rodino Antitrust Improvements Act and European Union merger control regulations. Pending regulatory and stockholder approval, the companies expect the transaction to be completed in the first half of calendar year 2008.

  7. Activision Commits To Revitalising The James Bond Franchise

    By Devin Zydel on 2007-11-07

While the news has been somewhat quiet regarding the return of James Bond to the video game world under Activision’s guidance, a new report from GamesIndustry.biz shows that the company seems to have a lot in store for the secret agent.

Activision CEO Bobby Kotick has said the company is committed to revitalising the James Bond brand–‘one of the greatest videogame franchises of all time’–while additionally revealing that there are currently two 007 games in development.

‘Bond is one of the great videogame franchises of all time and that really was a result of GoldenEye,’ commented Kotick at a BMO Capital Markets conference.

‘I think the key to re-energising the Bond franchise is going to be ultimately the highest possible game quality.’

Kotick went on to explain that Electronic Arts (EA), who held the Bond licence up until 2006 and whose recent games included GoldenEye: Rogue Agent and From Russia With Love, ultimately neglected the Bond franchise.

‘It suffered a lot because it wasn’t a focal point of Electronic Arts’ efforts over the past five years and they have such a broad portfolio of franchises that this one didn’t get the attention it deserved.’

‘Kotick continued: ‘we have our best development studios working on the product, we have a second team working on another Bond product and we’re putting great resources against it.’

Activision was granted the James Bond licence in May 2006. Their first Bond game has been rumoured to be an adaptation of Bond 22 and is planned for release in 2008.

CBn will keep you updated with all the latest news and details regarding the upcoming Bond games from Activision.

  8. Daniel Craig Urges Activision To Make A Winning Bond Game

    By Devin Zydel on 2007-11-06

Add Daniel Craig to the list of gamers who are hoping Activsion pulls out all the stops for their upcoming James Bond game, due to be released in 2008.

In an article posted at Showbiz Spy, the 007 actor has revealed he’s addicted to computer games. ‘I play games. Hands up. I’m quite into ones that have a big fat story line.’

Halo is good because it’s shooting aliens. Those ultra-violent ones I can play for half-an-hour and then I feel dirty. Vice City, for example–I think, “Oh yes, all right, I’ve stolen 18 cars. I’ve had enough now.’

Craig continued: ‘I have to pick my time well. If my girlfriend sees the box then it’s all over. If I get some free time, when she goes away for the weekend, I’ll go and play some games.’

‘I can switch the phone off and not see anybody for a couple of hours. That is blissful. It’s just as well I don’t have much spare time or I would probably fritter it away playing computer games.’

However, Craig added that he wasn’t completely keen on being involved with the tie-in James Bond games when he signed on to play 007 in Casino Royale back in 2005.

‘When I started signing contracts for Bond I said, “I’m not doing the computer game” and they said, “Tough, you are”.’

‘I said to the people making the Bond game (Activision), “You’ve got to make this good because there is so much rubbish out there”.’

  9. Activision Announces 007 Game Developers

    By Matt Weston on 2007-08-22

K1Bond007 tips us off that Activision announced a couple of extra details regarding their upcoming debut James Bond video game at the 2007 German Games Convention.

It’s been rather quiet since Activision was granted the 007 rights in May 2006; the only real piece of news to have emerged is that the game is expected to be based on Bond 22.

Now, it has been revealed that studios Treyarch, Beenox and Vicarious Visions are developing the game, which will appear on next-generation consoles, Windows PC and hand-held platforms.

The news that the game will appear on PC should be particularly welcomed by 007 gamers; the most recent game to appear on PC was 2003’s Nightfire.

K1Bond007 speculates that each developer will handle a different platform, offering the “likely scenario” that Treyarch will develop the game for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, Beenox will handle the PC version and Vicarious Visions will develop the Wii, DS and/or PSP port.

Electronic Arts passed the James Bond rights to Activision following the release of 2005’s From Russia With Love.

  10. Nintendo Pushing For GoldenEye 007 On New Wii Console

    By Devin Zydel on 2006-11-29

Still labeled by many 007 fans as the best James Bond game ever, the popular GoldenEye 007 may be making a big comeback – reports HEXUS.

In an interview with MTV, Nintendo of America President, Reggie Fils-Aime has revealed that his company is doing everything in their power to bring back the GoldenEye 007 game for the new Wii console, which was released only a few days ago.

‘Would I love to see it on virtual console? Absolutely. But there are a lot of issues there,’ he said. ‘Suffice it to say we would love to see it, so we’re exploring all the rights issues.’

What some of these issues entail is that both Microsoft (which purchased U.K.based Rare Ltd, the company behind GoldenEye 007) and Activision, the current holder of the Bond video game rights, would have to agree on this title being released once more.

    Time will tell…
