Negotiations with Roger Michell for Bond 22 fell through

As previously reported on CBn several months ago, negotiations with Roger Michell to direct the next James Bond film had reportedly fallen through due to ‘creative differences.’

According to a recent interview in UK newspaper Metro, Michell briefly discussed the offer to direct Bond 22, saying: ‘I got into a bit of a panic at the prospect. At that time, the film was due to start shooting in January, and I just felt this terrible pressure of scrambling to get a script together with the clock ticking. To go into a film like James Bond when you don’t really know what’s happening would be a recipe for hell.’

With a starting date in January, it is possible Bond 22 could have been released in late 2007.

Michell’s previous films included Changing Lanes, Notting Hill, and Enduring Love which starred Daniel Craig. As of now, the search for a Bond 22 director continues…

    By Devin Zydel on 2006-12-13

With Casino Royale breaking box office records around the world, the stage is now set for a flood of Bond 22 news and rumours.

IGN reports that, according to The Sun, Ian Fleming’s short story Risico will be the title and the plot basis for Daniel Craig’s second James Bond film.

‘Bosses were so pleased with how well Casino Royale has been received that work has already commenced on Risico at Pinewood Studios,’ claimed a source for The Sun. ‘Some of the same characters will crop up again. But one of the main aspects will be to develop Bond’s complex personality.’ The plot of the novel is supposedly being changed to that the film is a direct continuation from Casino Royale.

The Sun also says that director Martin Campbell will return to direct the film.

I said to Barbara Broccoli the other day when we started getting good reviews–which was great–and suddenly we’ve got a successful movie. I said, “Well we’ve done it now because we’ve got to make the next one better!” But that’s the challenge and that’s all I’ve ever really thought about in acting,’ said Craig.

‘[Bond] was the biggest challenge I’ve ever been offered and the course of your life changes.’

  6. Eva Green Reveals Possible Bond 22 'Baddie' Details

    By Devin Zydel on 2006-11-18

    ***WARNING: Plot spoilers***

In an Entertainment Weekly interview, Bond girl Eva Green spoke about her role as Vesper Lynd in Casino Royale and also revealed some details regarding a possible villain in Bond 22, due out in November 2008…

‘You do a lot of photo shoots, and it’s based on the beauty thing, and it’s like, ”Oh, the sexy Bond girl! Whoa!” It’s really annoying, but I can’t really complain. I just hope people enjoy my performances,’ replied Green when asked about her stunning looks.

When asked about how she handled her powerful scene near the end of Casino Royale, Green explained: ‘It’s like a choreography. [Vesper] loves him, but she has to express it without saying anything. It was quite emotional.’

‘I think it’s too confusing,’ says Green in regards to the mysteries of Vesper’s motivations in the film. ‘But they’re going to do a second [movie] where you’ll understand what’s going on in her mind. It was really hard, and Barbara Broccoli helped me understand. You would think, wait a minute, she had an Algerian boyfriend, and she’s been sent on this mission, and then she begins to feel guilty. She’s in love with Bond. It’s a deep love. The Algerian boyfriend was something light, an affair. So there’s an internal conflict. The plan is, the Algerian boyfriend is going to be the baddie in the second Bond, and we’ll understand [better]. But you don’t have to think about it too much.’

  7. Neal Purvis And Robert Wade Discuss Casino Royale And Bond 22

    By Devin Zydel on 2006-11-17

The BBC News features an interview with Neal Purvis and Robert Wade, who wrote the scripts for the three most recent James Bond films, including Casino Royale.

‘Personally I really like the books: I came to them from the movies. The films have this wonderful swoop to them but the books have more texture. That’s to do with Bond being this hard-living, dark creature in the middle of all that’s going on,’ said Wade when asked if it was possible to go back to Ian Fleming’s James Bond for each new 007 actor.

‘But it’s true that over the years the film character has developed into something quite different to Fleming’s character,’ adds Purvis. ‘Though there’s often been talk of going back to basics with Bond and making him more ‘Flemingian’ this was the best opportunity ever because we’re starting again with the first novel … we tried to be as faithful to the novel as possible and keep it fairly dark.’

On actor Daniel Craig, Wade said: ‘When you have an actor you play to his strengths–and in Daniel Craig you’ve got a fantastic actor. Pierce Brosnan had wonderful comic timing–a kind of suavity which you have to celebrate when you’ve got it. With Daniel we don’t want him wearing safari suits. He’s got this great toughness to him but not an unthinking toughness. I think that’s where the films will need to go.’

Both Wade and Purvis have also been connected with the script for Bond 22, starring Daniel Craig once again, and due out in November 2008.

‘In the next film the emphasis has to be on the unfinished emotional business at the end of Casino Royale,’ says Wade. ‘It has to be dealt with in such a way that his character continues to have an arc.’

‘It can’t just be he’s tough and he’s tempered steel and totally impervious. There are things he still has to resolve. So that’s the legacy of Casino Royale and it’s important to have it so the actor has something to play.’

  8. 'Another Two Or Three' Bond Films With Craig, Says Broccoli

    By Devin Zydel on 2006-11-16

Even with Casino Royale making it’s world premiere only two days ago, news on the next James Bond 007 film, Bond 22 is already coming in.

Hollywood reports that producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli are looking at London as a possible shooting location for Bond 22, due for release in November 2008.

However, rising costs are playing a role in the decision: ‘London is the most expensive city in the world right now,’ says Wilson. ‘To bring talent here and put them up for long periods of time and the cost of doing business here is a factor.’

Broccoli says: ‘We’d like to do another two or three [Bond films] with Daniel [Craig] and we’d like to film the next one in London.”

  9. Unfinished Business For Bond 22, Says Barbara Broccoli

    By Devin Zydel on 2006-11-07

    WARNING: Possible plot spoilers

It is nothing new to see discussion on the next James Bond film, in this case Bond 22, with the newest one yet to be released. In an interview with CHUD, producer Barbara Broccoli has spoken about the directions both Casino Royale and Bond 22 are travelling in.

‘At the end of this film there’s unfinished business,’ she said. ‘It’s clear in this story that there’s someone out there. In fact there’s a line at the end of the book Casino Royale where Bond makes a decision that he’s going to take on this task, he’s going to become a warrior and try to find the hand that holds the whip. The big menace out there, the man who manipulates people and gets them to do evil things. That’s very much the spirit of the book and that’s the direction we’re going to continue on.’

Many Bond fans have wondered whether we’ll be seeing remakes of such films as From Russia With Love or Goldfinger, but Broccoli said that isn’t the plan.

‘There’s unfinished business in terms of an evil force but there’s also unfinished business internally that he has to resolve. We’re planning to go forward and resolve some of this. Quite how we do it, I don’t know at the moment. It’s a great starting point for the future journey.’

‘Although these are not political films, we like to get the atmosphere of the world situation, and terrorism is a big subject on everybody’s mind,’ she continues. ‘It’s not just the terrorism but the financing of terrorism, and that’s a big challenge for all the secret services of the world, to find the financing and track the financing. When we did Casino Royale it was easy to adapt the Le Chiffre character and make him the banker to the world’s terrorists. I think we’ll continue down that path of trying to find a relevant and more realistic story–not a political story.’

Daniel Craig can’t wait as well. ‘In June of this year, when I finished this movie, the last thing in the world I wanted to do was make another Bond movie,’ he says. ‘I now feel much more pumped up about the idea of taking this on, and it’s going to be interesting.’
