  1. Sideshow Collectibles at Comic-Con 2005

    By David Winter on 2005-07-21
    The Sideshow Booth

    The Sideshow Booth

CBn stopped by the Sideshow Collectibles booth at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con for a looksee at their latest Bond offerings. While there were no Bond surprises at this year’s con (Sideshow’s BIG news was the announcement of the license to produce 12-inch Star Wars figures), we did get a close up look at the prototype for Moonraker Moore (due out in the 3rd quarter 2005).

    Moonraker Moore

    Moonraker Moore Close Up

CBn will do a full review of Moonraker Moore when it’s released, but from the looks of the prototype, it’s clear this latest offering from Sideshow is… out of this world.

Moonraker Moore will be the third Roger Moore figure Sideshow has produced (Live and Let Die and The Man With The Golden Gun being the others). Sideshow’s Production Coordinator, Scott Klauder, was able to confirm for us that the Moonraker Moore head sculpt by Oluf Hartvigson is a new one. Also, the first 500 customers who order directly from SideshowCollectibles.com will received a bonus accessory — Bond’s cigarette case X-ray machine. To pre-order Moonraker Moore from Sideshow click here.

    And what of the future?

Scott told us the Bond line has been very succesful for Sideshow and that we could expect more 1/4 scale Premium Bond figures with an announcement coming in the next few months. While Scott couldn’t reveal what these figures will be, it seems logical that at least one of them will be an 1/4 scale Roger Moore figure. We can also expect news of a new 12-inch figure soon.

Scott also provided an interesting bit of trivia; the best selling Bond Sideshow figure “by far” was Pierce Brosnan from Die Another Day. Looks like the “billion dollar Bond” was also a golden boy for Sideshow.

We were then pleasantly surprised when Scott asked us a question. What did we think Bond fans like to see next from Sideshow’s James Bond line? Did we have any ideas for them?

Bond fans? Ideas? Are you kidding?

    Sideshow's Bond Display

    Sideshow’s Bond Display

We had a few ideas on the spot (Roger Moore in mountain climbing outfit with ATTAC accessory from For Your Eyes Only, Elektra King in her red casino dress from The World is Not Enough), but we said we would throw the question out to the largest and most vocal collection of Bond fans anywhere on the web — the CBn forums.

How to send your Bond figure ideas to Sideshow…

So if you have an idea for a future Bond figure you would love to see from Sideshow, post it in THIS thread and we will forward the ideas on to Scott and the rest of the team at Sideshow Collectibles.

  3. The '007 Scene It?' Test Drive

    By Athena Stamos on 2005-07-10
    Scene it? 007 Edition

    Scene it? James Bond Edition

Last month a group of 12 Bond fans in Los Angeles got together with John Cork and Bruce Scivally (who wrote the trivia card questions) for a night of 007 fun. The goal of the evening was to test drive Screenlife’s game, Scene It? James Bond Edition. Those in attendance ranged from hardcore Bond Fanatics to people who just came for the free food and booze.

Three Rounds of the game were played, ending with the final face off to find the champion of James Bond knowledge. LA Bond fan Collin Stutz won, with CBn Member Ryan Provencher coming in close second — both received a rare 007 Martini set.

So does Scene it? James Bond Edition measure up? Here are the reactions from some of the event’s attendees:

007 Scene It is one of the few examples of a board game that can appeal to the most ardent Bond fan, but also to average fan that’s just looking for a fun time. The questions certainly range from reasonably easy to somewhat difficult (always a good thing). The element that works best with the game is that you can be the biggest Bond fan, but if you land on the wrong space you can lose your turn. The luck of the draw certainly helps. If you are one of the lucky ones to keep getting the questions right and landing on the best spaces you can get across the board and maintain a healthy lead. However if you role an “All Play” all players of the game have the chance to answer the DVD question and if you don’t get it you lose your turn. If you role the dice and get a Q card you will most likely lose your turn as well. These obstacles allow for the game to be more easily matched.

    Ryan Provencher

    Ryan checks out his prize

The addition of the DVD is also a pleasant surprise as it adds a different element to the game and allows the Bond players the chance to talk about the scene after it plays. Of course they pick some of the best scenes in the series. All in all I was quite impressed with 007 Scene It as it made me interested in purchasing the original Scene It game as well. It also helped that all the participants in the game were great Bond fans and fun to be with. What more can you ask for.

    – Ryan Provencher,
    CBn Member Ry

We all watch the Scene it? “training” video

What really impressed me about the 007 Scene It? Was how it levels the playing field by design. With a game like this there is always the fear that a Bond expect can run the board, but with Scene it that doesn’t happen due to the Play All option (where anyone can shout out the answer) and Q cards (which stops your turn).

You may know your Bond, but you are still at the mercy of a roll of the dice. For example, Athena was afraid she wouldn’t be able to keep up, but she darn near won all the marbles in the finals! Being a Bond expert is an advantage, yes, but you also have to be lucky with the dice or you might find yourself trailing behind (as I did).

    Matthew rolls the dice

I absolutely loved playing this game, especially as I did – in grand and rarefied company and with most gracious hosts. I think the game makes for a wonderful party game evening and I mightily and earnestly stamp it approved. It offers bountiful challenge of varying degrees and encourages spirited camaraderie for both the casual fan and the dangerously obsessed. Cocktails and designated drivers are optional but both are highly recommended.

    – Matthew Buzzell,
    CBn Member Solex Agitator

While I enjoy James Bond I am certainly not at the level of most of the people who attended the party. Nevertheless it was a great party game and even I was able to answer a few questions. The questions and scenes varied in difficulty for novices to experts. Everybody had a great time and I am looking forward to round two of 007 Scene It!

    – Gabriel Pitts,
    LA Bond Fan

007 Scene It? is a must for any Bond fan. If you love the films, you will love this extremely well designed and cleverly executed DVD game.

    – Collin Stutz,
    LA Bond Fan

    Bruce Scivally & John Cork

Bruce & John make sure everyone is playing by the rules

007 Scene It is heaven for Bond fans and even non-Bond fans. John Cork has culled together a great selection of Bond trivia that go from simple “Who is M’s assistant?” to “What is the number on the jet Bond steals during the Tomorrow Never Dies pre-credits?“. The game is simple and isn’t just clips and questions. They’re all very stylized – much like the special edition DVD’s and the different types of play make it a great interactive party game. The Bond aspects are prevalent throughout from the playing pieces to the often hysterical card responses. 007 Scene It? is a must for any Bond Fan and anyone who’s ever enjoyed a Bond film.

The Scene It? games now mingled with Bond have opened the door for more of these specified games down the line. It’s only a matter of time before Star Wars, Star Trek and Lord of the Rings get their Scene It? treatments.

    – Charlie Axworthy,
    CBn Team Member Bryce (003)

Now I’m a James Bond fan, but not someone who knows every little detail contained within the 007 films. I was a little worried about how competitive I would be against those whose knowledge of 007 is more extensive. Well, my worries were for nothing. As long as you’re familiar with James Bond and his adventures it doesn’t mater who you’re playing with. The person with the least amount of Bond knowledge could end up winning, fate lies in a roll of the dice.

    Scene it? James Bond

Everyone watches a “My Play” clip

My favorites part of the game was the, “My Play” or “All Play” feature. This is where the question[s] are asked in a visual form on the DVD. You have to figure out different puzzles like: name the bond girl by her silhouette, identifying the film by different screen shots, identify the film or characters by a screenshot where the character’s face/body is removed (leaving the cloths) — there are a lot of other visual and auditory puzzles contained on the dvd as well. If you really like the dvd puzzles like I do, there’s a “Party Play” option which runs the dvd puzzles one after another and everyone can simultaneously play by shouting out the correct answer first.

  5. Outer Space Now Belongs To Sideshow Collectibles

    By Athena Stamos on 2005-02-21

Sideshow Collectibles have unveiled a new addition to their James Bond Collection at the 2005 American International Toy Fair in New York.

    Sideshow's Moonraker Moore

    Sideshow’s Moonraker Moore

It’s Moore… Roger Moore from Moonraker!

This 12-inch figure comes from sculptor Oluf Hartvigson (See: The Sideshow CBn Interview) and is a great counterpart to Sideshow’s 2003 special 14-inch Jaws figure.

The 12-inch Roger Moore as James Bond action figure has over 30 points of articulation, comes dressed in his fully detailed Moonraker flight suit and astronaut boots, and is equipped with the Moonraker laser gun, wrist watch dart gun and a Moonraker 12″ figure stand.

The first 500 customers to PRE-ORDER directly from Sideshow will receive an exclusive bonus accessory available nowhere else — an x-ray machine disguised as a cigarette case!

  6. CBn Reviews Sideshow's Wai Lin

    By Athena Stamos on 2005-02-06
    Wai Lin from Sideshow

    Wai Lin from Sideshow

From Andy Bergholtz, the Sideshow sculptor who brought us Xenia Onatopp from GoldenEye, has now come out with his second James Bond figure — Wai Lin from Tomorrow Never Dies! This 12 inch Figure is defiantly an improvement; as the likeness of this figure to Michelle Yeoh is excellent.

Wai Lin has over 30 points of articulation, which are fabulous! Sideshow has really gone through a lot of improvements when it comes to articulation. As you may recall, the mobility of the Pierce Brosnan Die another Day figure is quite stiff. Then there was some great improvement with the Alec Trevelyan figure from GoldenEye, but Wai Lin is far superior when considering mobility.

    Tomorrow Never Dies' Wai Lin

    Wai Lin's ninja star shoes

She comes with a MP-5 sub-machine gun with removable clip, small explosives, two ninja stars to match the ones implanted on the bottom of her shoes (this is a very cool detail) and a movie specific figure stand. She’s outfitted all in black: turtleneck, vest with details like a pocket on the back, pants, socks & shoes.

Fans may be interested to know that Wai Lin is only the second figure from Sideshow that uses real hair. The first figure being Anna Valerious of Van Helsing.

Following the Bond Girl figure box format, Wai Lin’s packaging features a picture of Michelle Yeoh from Tomorrow Never Dies with a mini-insert of the UK poster. Take a look at the pictures to see Sideshows superior packaging.

  9. Sideshow to Release 'HALO Bond'

Brosnan in HALO suit in Tomorrow Never Dies

Although it has yet to be officially announced, CBn has learned that Sideshow Collectibles plans to release a Pierce Brosnan/James Bond action figure dressed in his HALO Jump Suit from Tomorrow Never Dies.

One of Tomorrow Never Dies‘ most thrilling sequences, the HALO (High Altitude Low Opening) jump was performed off the coast of Key Largo, Florida by longtime Bond stunt coordinator B.J. Worth. The action calls for Bond to jump from a plane and free-fall for five miles before releasing his chute at 200 feet (below Chinese radar) and hitting the water at 30 MPH.

The new HALO Bond figure should make an excellent companion to the Wai Lin action figure due for release in the first Quarter of ’05.

  10. The Sideshow CBn Interview

    By Athena Stamos on 2004-11-23

Athena StamosOluf Hartvigson, award winning master sculptor (MFA, University of Michigan), began his freelance-sculpting career in California in 1993 where he sculpted fine art, model kits, animatronics and effects make-up. He also lead construction on sets for commercials and films and was the Assistant Art Director on the film Color of Night (1994) staring Bruce Willis. Oluf currently resides in Alaska (his favorite place to work and play) where he sculpts using digital and traditional techniques. To pre-order Oluf’s latest masterpiece, the 1/4 Scale Pierce Brosnan as James Bond, visit Sideshow.com.

And now… thanks to Sideshow, Oluf was kind enough to grant CBn an interview amidst his busy schedule.

    The Sideshow CBn Interview

q Oluf HartvigsonWhat inspired you to become a sculptor?

oh I’ve always loved art. When I was a boy I used to sit at a nearby pond and draw birds or try to copy wildlife prints by Audubon. When I was in high school I went to Europe for a Language tour, during which we spent several days in Rome. There, we saw some of the finest renaissance art ever created, but what was most amazing was sculpture by Michelangelo and Bernini and that did it for me. I’ve never regretted becoming a sculptor.

q Could tell us a little about how you became involved with Sideshow?

oh I had been sculpting for other toy companies for several years when one of us contacted the other. After several months I flew into LA and we hit it off. Our first project together was the Universal Studios Classic Monster action figures. Since then we have worked quite a lot together.

q Do you get to choose the figures you sculpt or are they assigned to you?

oh Sometimes I do get to choose the characters I do, but most of the time it is based on the work load of Mat Falls and what fits my abilities best.

Timothy Daltonq Is the creation of the 12-inch figures much different from the 1/4 scale figures?

oh They are quite different. The 12-inch line has a stock body Sideshow created, but each of the 1/4 scale figures has a unique body, or in other words, they are all sculpted to match the individuals portrayed.

q Is there a certain part of the figure design that requires more concentration and accuracy than other parts?

oh The portraits are by far the part, which takes the most concentration and focus. The hands and feet or shoes are critical too, but for me, I find it easier to do a set of “portrait” feet and hands or even a body than the head.

q Which James Bond 12-inch figure was the most difficult to sculpt?

oh The most difficult would have to be the Timothy Dalton, James Bond.

q Which James Bond 12-inch figures was your favorite to sculpt?

ohquote My favorite 12-inch figure was the Honor Blackman, “Pussy Galore”. It was the most challenging and by far the most interesting.

qSo you found sculpting the female figure [Pussy Galore] to be more of a challenge than the male figures?

oh Yes. Most women are very sensitive about their appearance, especially any representations of them. The greatest challenge is not the technical sculpting itself, but trying to capture, in fact, the beauty she sees in herself.

Pussy Galoreq Do the actors whose character you’re sculpting have any input as to the final result of their figure likeness?

oh Most have a say in their likeness. It is always exciting to hear their responses.

q When it comes to the over all final presentation of a figure, do you work closely with the clothing and packaging designers?

oh Not really. I focus primarily on the sculpting. The clothing and packaging artists work their magic without my input.

q How much time do you spend on a figure before it’s complete?

oh I spend around a week on a 12″ figure and up to a month on the 1/4 scale figures if I’m sculpting the body as well.

q Which James Bond character that hasn’t been sculpted yet would you like to work on next?

oh The next character I would like to sculpt is a 1/4 scale Roger Moore (James Bond) or a Sean Bean (006).

q Of all the figures you’ve made (excluding the Bond figures) which ones are you the most proud of?

oh Of the products currently available, I would have to say I am most proud of the Buffy figures I’ve sculpted, especially the Vampire versions and the “John Doggett” character from the X-Files.
