Bonhams will host the exhibition in a number of key locations, provide marketing and press support, and host a series of private view receptions in various locations. The exhibition will be staged in 11 different cities around the world during the coming year at venues provided by Bonhams or Flemings:

Previously unseen archive material will be featured including fascinating personal letters and manuscript material from Ian Fleming. The Exhibition’s decorative value is enhanced by a selection of iconic film posters.

Selina Skipworth, Keeper of the Art at The Fleming Collection who is curating the exhibition, says: “The covers of Bond novels stretching back more than half a century provide a fascinating snapshot of society’s shifting attitude to sex, feminism and the changing international political climate.”

Ian Fleming’s life was a fascinating backdrop for his stories about 007. Born in 1908, the grandson of the founder of Flemings, Ian was educated at Eton and after a brief period at the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst he went abroad to further his education. In 1931 having failed to get an appointment in the Foreign Office he joined Reuters News Agency. During WWII he was personal assistant to the Director of Naval Intelligence rising to the rank of Commander. This experience gave him first-hand knowledge of secret operations. After the war he became Foreign Manager for Kemsley Newspapers. He built his house Goldeneye in Jamaica and there at the age of 44 he wrote Casino Royale, the first of his novels featuring Commander James Bond. By the time of his death the James Bond books had sold 40 million copies.

The charity, ‘Room to Read’ which builds schools and libraries for girls in Third World countries will be a beneficiary of the Exhibition. The charity is headed by John Wood who has links to Bill Clinton and other VIPs.

The Imperial War Museum are hosting an exhibition explaining Fleming’s wartime experience which provided his insight into the life of Agent 007. This exhibition will run to Jan 09.

  7. CBn Forum Member Suggestion Makes The Cut In 'By Royal Command'

    By Matt Weston on 2008-09-07

Never underestimate the power of a James Bond fan.

    Charlie Higson’s By Royal Command

In an upcoming interview on The Young Bond Dossier, bestselling novelist Charlie Higson reveals that a suggestion made by CommanderBond.net Forum member “Trident” made the cut in his newly-released Young Bond novel, By Royal Command.

In February 2007, “Trident” suggested Young Bond ought to have a timepiece: “One thing I noticed during reading Blood Fever is that James is on serveral occasions wondering what time it is. As I haven’t read Higson’s third book up to now, I don’t know if he already gave Bond his (first?) wristwatch. If not, here is my personal suggestion for a proper watch for 1930s Bond. It’s a Mido Multifort, introduced in 1934, the first automatic, anti-magnetic, water-proof (up to 30 metres; perfectly sufficient back in those days), and shock resistant watch of its time.”

Released last week, By Royal Command sees James Bond obtaining exactly this watch!

Higson explains to the Young Bond Dossier, “I think for the real Bond purists I should have given him a Rolex because that’s his iconic watch. But I sort of love the idea of the Multifort. It just looked like a really interesting watch. And I think, for the time, it is the right watch for him to have. And it’s a nice little nod to CBn.”

A very flattering remark from Charlie Higson that shows precisely the quality of the fans on the CommanderBond.net Forums!

  8. Pre-order 'My Word Is My Bond' Limited Edition

    By Devin Zydel on 2008-09-06

A limited signed and slipcased edition of Sir Roger Moore’s upcoming autobiography, My Word Is My Bond, is available for pre-order.

Hatchards Bookshop is currently accepting orders for this special edition of My Word Is My Bond, which is signed, numbered out of 1,000 and presented in a slipcase.

This limited edition hardback will retail for £35 and is due for release in October 2008. To order a copy, visit Hatchards.co.uk and access the ‘Special Editions’ section.

The quintessential suave hero, Roger Moore has had an extraordinary career that has spanned seven decades, from early television to the golden age of Hollywood and on to international superstardom.

Dashing, handsome and every inch the archetypal English gentleman, he is unforgettable as The Saint, as Lord Brett Sinclair in The Persuaders! and, of course, as James Bond, making seven blockbusting films as arguably the most debonair of the 007s.

For the first time, Roger shares his recollections of playing some of the world’s most famous roles alongside a host of legendary stars. With myriad stories from his personal life–from his childhood in London and experiences during the Second World War, to the happy and turbulent times in his later life. Along with anecdotes about his encounters with the stars and his wonderful memories from the heyday of Hollywood, My Word is My Bond is as frank, funny and disarmingly charming as the legend himself.

My Word is My Bond is scheduled for regular publication on 2 October in the UK and 4 November in the US. Pre-order online:
