  2. Ian Fleming 007 Novels Sell For $58,000 At Auction

    Ian Fleming’s Casino Royale

A collection of first edition James Bond novels by Ian Fleming sold today for £31,000 ($58,000) at an auction.

As earlier reported by CommanderBond.net, the collection had belonged to Sir Fitzroy Maclean, a lifelong friend of Fleming, and some say a real-life inspiration for the character of 007.

The sale price of the entire collection far surpassed the estimate of £20,000.

Maclean’s passport, invitations from a French ambassador to cocktail parties, visas and photographs of the diplomat with Tito in Yugoslavia were among the items sold.

The early editions of the Bond novels, including Casino Royale, were bought by the London book dealer Adrian Harrington, a Bond specialist.

Purchaser John Gilbert said: ‘The books will be used as background material for a bibliography I am writing on Fleming. They will prove invaluable to my research. I have the full support of the Fleming family and the book will be published in the next 18 months.’

Maclean was a founder member of the SAS and trusted friend of Sir Winston Churchill. A friend of Fleming’s since their days at Eton, his wartime exploits included working inside the Soviet Union in the 1930s.

Maclean, who died in 1996, was also suspected at times of being a British spy (which he denied) and was also an associate of the double-agent Kim Philby and is said to have suspected him.

His son Sir Charles Maclean stated that the family decided to sell the Bond novels that had been in his father’s colection so that they could be treasured by Fleming collectors.

‘They gave my father much pleasure,’ he said, ‘and I hope they will bring someone else the same.’

  4. Charlie Higson On The Future Of Young Bond

    By Devin Zydel on 2008-09-02

Charlie Higson was the featured guest on today’s BBC Breakfest where the topic of discussion was–you guessed it–Young Bond.

The center of the discussion was the latest addition to the popular series, By Royal Command, which officially hits bookstores tomorrow morning in the UK.

Speaking about the book, Higson mentioned that it starts with James Bond learning how to ski and eventually moves into some ‘full-blown spying’ for the first time in the series.

The most intriguing aspect of the interview is Higson’s reply when asked if By Royal Command represented the end of the Young Bond books: ‘No. I’m taking a break for the time being.’

He continues: ‘I’d always had a series of five books worked out and I knew where the fifth one ended up because there’s a very famous obituary in one of the Fleming books which is the only time he tells us about Bond’s childhood. In that, he says that he was thrown out of Eton after a short time for misbehaving with one of the maids–which is what this book is about–it’s about Bond falling in love with this maid and the consequences of that, which are actually of a more serious nature than Fleming hinted at.’

Check out this YouTube link for the entire interview, including Higson discussing why he was chosen for the job by the Ian Fleming estate and much more.

  5. Charlie Higson Talks Young Bond And Beyond

    By Devin Zydel on 2008-09-01

Young Bond author Charlie Higson was a featured guest today on the BBC 6 Music show Nemone.

Speaking about his latest addition to the popular series, By Royal Command (due for publication this Wednesday in the UK) and the upcoming SilverFin graphic novel adaptation, Higson also gave fans some details about what is in store for the future.

Bringing up one of By Royal Command‘s locations in Kitzbuel, Austria, Higson said: ‘Well, I went there. The thing about Ian Fleming was that he used to write about things he was passionate about and places he loved and he had spent alot of time in his life in Kitzbuel. And it was an important time in his life, when he was sort of getting his head together. And he loved it there and learned to ski there, which is why there’s always so much skiing in the books and films. You think of James Bond and you think of skiing…’

On the topic of romance and Young Bond, he said: ‘I’ve pushed it a little bit more in each of the books, expecting complaints, but they generally accept it. From watching the movies, I mean, he is James Bond, and he does do a certain amount of kissing.’

‘The essence of the book is that James Bond does fall in love for the first time. Although, I hasten to add, since alot of children are listening, don’t worry, alot of people still get killed.’

Higson then moved on to the long-awaited SilverFin graphic novel. ‘Yeah, we’ve got the first Young Bond graphic novel book coming out in the beginning of October, which I’m really excited about, because I’ve always been a huge comics fan.’

When asked what sparked this new venture for the Young Bond series, he said: ‘Well, we always wanted to do as much as we could with Young Bond and expand it and see what sort of other areas we could go into, that’s why we’re doing this online game.’

‘From the start, we had this fantastic comic book artist called Kev Walker who was doing illustrations for us and for the website and some of the American covers. And we just thought, wouldn’t it be great to do a full-on comic book and use his illustrations. And he’s just been doing so much work on it, which is why it’s coming out about a year too late. But it’s beautiful, it’s full-colour throughout, Kev and I have done the adaptation together, although he’s done most of it.’

I’ve been very involved,’ Higson continues, ‘and Kev, he’s used to doing comic books where the writer will come in and you say “Do this, that, and a picture…”, but I’ve always thought I know better how to do this. So the great thing is it’s been designed to work visually, so the visuals come first.’

When the subject of Young Bond on the big screen came up, Higson called the idea ‘complicated.’

‘You know, with screen rights, and also trying to find a boy with the charisma of Sean Connery. It’s very difficult to get good child actors, which is why Tolkien was so clever in The Lord of the Rings, where the hobbits are essentially adults, but any child coming into it thinks of them as children.’

He continues: ‘When these books first started, there was a rumour that went around and became quite well established that Orlando Bloom was going to play Young Bond. And I thought that they’re going to have to go and do what they did with the hobbits and have him go around on his knees.’

On what follows after the publication of By Royal Command, Higson said: ‘I’m working on a non-Bond book at the moment. A new series of action-adventure books set in the contemporary world, which is basically 28 Days Later for kids. Basically, everyone over the age of 14 has been wiped out by a disease, so some kids have taken over London. But, it turns out that not everyone has been taken out by the disease…’

A collection of Ian Fleming first editions once owned by a man labeled as being a real-life James Bond are going up for auction this week.

The Telegraph reports that a collection of 007 novels owned by Sir Fitzroy Maclean, a lifelong friend of Fleming, are expected to sell for more than £20,000.

Maclean was a founder member of the SAS and trusted friend of Sir Winston Churchill. A friend of Fleming’s since their days at Eton, his wartime exploits included working inside the Soviet Union in the 1930s.

Maclean, who died in 1996, was also suspected at times of being a British spy (which he denied)and was also an associate of the double-agent Kim Philby and is said to have suspected him.

His Bond novels, which include the ultra-rare Casino Royale and every subsequent novel, will go under the hammer at Lyon and Turnbull auctioneers in Edinburgh on Wednesday, 3 September.

‘Sir Fitzroy is one of the men thought to have inspired the character of Bond,’ said Simon Vickers of the auctioneers. ‘He certainly fits the bill and when asked during his life about the link he wouldn’t confirm or deny it. He was a friend of Fleming’s and they moved in the same circles.’

  9. 'The Shadow War': Mission One

    By Matt Weston on 2008-08-27

    The “War” has begun.

James Bond fans who were recruited to become either a British SIS agent or a Soviet OGPU spy in the exciting new alternate reality game, The Shadow War, should have received their first mission briefing via email…

There have been some strange goings on in a castle in Scotland and you are needed urgently.

We can’t say much more in case someone is reading this, but go now to mission control over at The Shadow War and all will be revealed.

This mission is the first of seven, which will be revealed over the next seven weeks.

According to the press release, “Players around the world will use a range of media, including the Young Bond books themselves and the worldwide web, to complete the missions and influence the outcome of the game.”

What are you waiting for? Join The Shadow War!

Meanwhile, guardian.co.uk reported from the launch of The Shadow War in Edinburgh.

It is hoped that the cross-media game will reach out to children who are reluctant to pick up a book.

“We think reading is sitting down and reading a novel but there are all sorts of reading,” Charlie Higson, author of the bestselling Young Bond series, said. “Kids can get as engrossed in a football magazine as they can in a history book or novel. We shouldn’t be dismissive of other forms of literature – I used to read tons of comic books when I was a kid.”

“We’re always looking for new ways to get people interested,” Higson continued, “especially the sort of person who wouldn’t be hanging around in a children’s bookshop, or reading a worthy magazine in a school library … this is a way of getting other kids interested who might not know about the books.”

The author also discussed the prospect of film rights for the series, just days after Eon Productions chose not to pick up the option to film Sebastian Faulks’ James Bond bestseller, Devil May Care. According to Higson, there has been “a lot of film interest” in the Young Bond novels.

“It’s just finding the time to get it right – it’s very difficult to find a kid with the charisma to pull off the character of Bond at that age.”

Keep watching CommanderBond.net for all the latest developments regarding The Shadow War.
