  2. German 'SilverFin' Cover Revealed

    German SilverFin Cover

The cover artwork for the German edition of Charlie Higson’s first Young Bond
novel, SilverFin, has finally been revealed. Title decision took some time, as alternate cover designs were under consideration. As expected, it was finally decided to go close with the known eel artwork, looking very much like the UK edition, but with a new Young Bond logo.

As the German title Stille Wasser sind tödlich (‘Silent Waters Are Deadly’) is a bit long to simply replace the word SilverFin on the cover, this one says "James Bond" in bold letters, with the actual novel title in smaller letters below. The translation was done by Petra Koob-Pawis.

As reported earlier by CBn Stille Wasser sind tödlich will be published by Arena Verlag, a renowned German publisher of children’s books, and will be available on August 15, 2005. The book will have 352 pages at a size of 14×21 cm (roughly DIN A5) with an embossed front cover. Price will be 9,90 (Germany), 10,20 (Austria) and CHF 18,10 (Switzerland), ISBN 3-401-05837-1

  3. Charlie Higson Q&A Reveals More on Young Bond 2

    By Matt Weston on 2005-06-03
Young Bond Book 1 - 'SilverFin'

    Young Bond Book 1: ‘SilverFin’

Charlie Higson was put in the hotseat in CBBC’s Newsround, as fans had the opportunity to quiz the author about SilverFin, the Young Bond series and life in general. The interview contains questions from fans aged 11 to 16, both young males and females, a sign of the market Higson has tapped with his series.

Young Bond Book 2 was a hot topic and Higson dropped some interesting hints of what to expect, responding to questions from eager fans, including CBn’s own Chris Wright. Whilst Higson has offered numerous tidbits about his next novel, which is due out in January 2006, the pieces are still falling into place. Higson’s latest interview offers the most detailed clues yet…

CBn’s Chris Wright: Is “Double M” still the working title for the second book or has a final title been selected?

Charlie Higson: “Double M” is still the working title. I quite like it as it combines the double from 007 and “M”, who is head of the British Secret Intelligence Service MI6. But the title’s not considered racy enough. “Double M” (“MM”) refers to the symbol of a secret criminal society in the second book.

David, 14, Loxwood: Can you reveal anything about the next book?

Charlie Higson: It’s mainly set in Sardinia. It contains pirates, bandits, art thieves and a shoot out in a cave; everything you could want from a James Bond book. James goes to Sardinia on a school archaeological trip. I wanted to set the second book somewhere reasonably exotic. James Bond is known for travelling to such places. But it had to be somewhere James could get to during the summer holidays. That’s why I chose the Mediterranean. I didn’t want to use somewhere overly familiar like Greece or Italy or Spain. People don’t know much about Sardinia. It’s an interesting island with a history of banditry. I’ve been there a few times and I really like it. I saw an artist’s impression of a cave there. Inside are the remains of a Neolithic village. I thought it would make a great villain’s lair. I visited the cave last week and it’s not quite as exciting as the artists’ impression but the whole island is covered in remains of monuments and towers from the past, built between 2000 and 3000 BC. It’s a fantastic setting for an adventure.

Higson also revealed that Book 2 will hint at the significance of the number seven (as in “007”) in Bond’s life. Check out the entire interview here, in which Higson discusses the teen spy genre, a potential Young Bond film series, who he would like to see as Bond #6 and more.

Meanwhile, SilverFin continues to slither its way around the globe, having most recently found its way to Australia. Australian stores have begun stocking the novel, whilst various Australian online retailers are now shipping SilverFin, including QBD.

There are a total of five books planned in the Young Bond series.

  4. Sardinia, Art Theft, Bandits, Torture!

    By johncox on 2005-05-13

Seeing as SilverFin is now sitting comfortably on the bestseller lists and on the bookshelves of Bond fans on both sides of the Atlantic, it’s time to turn our attentions to the next adventure of young James Bond.

So what do we know about Young Bond Book 2?

As it turns out, we know quite a bit. What follows are all the known details about Book 2 that have been confirmed by author Charlie Higson and/or Ian Fleming Publications.

  5. Young Bonding in Arlington

    By Charles Helfenstein on 2005-05-08

Charles HelfensteinOn May 6, 2005 Charlie Higson concluded his 7 city US promotional tour for SilverFin with a talk and signing at Olsson’s Bookstore in Arlington, Virginia.

The event was well attended, the discussion was lively, and the bookstore did brisk business, with many patrons buying multiple copies for friends, co-workers, grandchildren, etc.

Higson began the talk with a bit of history of how he was chosen, and then read part of the first chapter and then the paragraphs that introduce the villain, Lord Hellebore.

After opening up the floor to questions, I wasn’t shy so I dove right in with the first one:

Why did Higson choose to have Bond be born in Switzerland, since Pearson says he was born in Germany, and was it a tough decision to have Bond born outside the UK?

Higson said he had not read Pearson’s biography of Bond (although he did think it was clever of Pearson to have Bond born in Germany as a foreshadowing of the war), and there were two reasons for Bond’s Swiss birth – his mother was Swiss, and it also kept up the theme of Bond as an outsider, something that happens throughout SilverFin.

Young Bond Book 1 - SilverFin

    Young Bond Book 1: SilverFin

CBn forums veteran, Dlibrasnow, chimed in next, with a question about Martini the horse and whether Book 2 would have more subtle or not so subtle references to the adult Bond. Higson somewhat apologized for the lack of subtlety with Martini, but there was no way he could work the real drink in because of Bond’s age. He said there would be more references in future books, and they would be more subtle. Higson also revealed that the father of a future Bond villain is in SilverFin.

Another attendee asked about Higson’s other projects, and he said that he was still doing comedy writing, and had just gotten a job writing for a feature film.

Dr Shatterhand, webmaster of the terrific James Bond website Dr. Shatterhand’s Botanical Garden, then asked if Higson had heard from either of his predecessors – Raymond Benson or John Gardner. Higson said he had not, and did not expect to. He likened Bond authorship to the Bond actors – once their time is done another fills his place.

Next I asked about his writing process. I mentioned that Fleming wrote early in the morning and never looked back at his previous pages until the chapter was done. Higson was intrigued by this and said that he too tries to complete a first draft quickly before bogging down in editing. He was grateful for the invention of the word processor, a luxury Fleming didn’t have. As far as timing he said that he kept normal office hours when he was writing.

The funniest part of the evening came when Higson described using his sons as sounding boards for his work. He said if they fell asleep when he read a chapter to them, he knew it was too boring and had to rework it. One of his sons kept begging his father to have characters killed off as soon as they were introduced. “Have him get stabbed!”, “Throw him off a cliff!”, etc.

After the discussion was over, the book signing began. After the crowd thinned out, the core CBn crew was left and so we took photos and asked a few more questions. I asked which of the stops were the best attended, and he said Los Angeles, New Jersey, and Virginia. Dr Shatterhand asked if he had ever been to DC before, and Higson said yes, about 20 years ago, with his band, The Higsons. I asked if there were other SilverFin tours planned – Europe perhaps, and he said that the circuit isn’t quite like the American one, and that he most likely would not be doing a European book tour.

left to right; doublenoughtspy, Charlie Higson, Dr Shatterhand, Dlibrasnow

Next I told him that I thought he captured the feeling of boarding school acurately, which he was releived to hear since he had not attended one. I also said I appreciated that he made Bond’s father a graduate of the University of St Andrews, where I had studied as well. We chatted a little bit about how beautfiul Scotland is.

Dr Shatterhand got in a quick interview with his video camera, and put Higson on the spot about his describing some Bond fans as “mad.” Higson handled the question with aplomb, saying that enthusiasm is one thing – devoting your life to James Bond is another.

After the interview was over, Dlibrasnow, Dr. Shatterhand, and I said our goodbyes and thanks to Mr. Higson. We probably kept him a little longer than we should have, but he was gracious to the last. I hope his tour for Book 2 will be as entertaining.

    Young Bond Book 1: SilverFin

Tired of speculating about who will be James Bond #6? Then how about a distraction on the 007 literary side?

During his final book tour appearance in Washington, D.C., Young Bond author Charlie Higson dropped an intriguing clue about a character who appears somewhere in his first Young Bond novel, SilverFin.

According to Higson, “the father of a future Bond villain” is in the novel. But Higson would reveal no more, saying that was a reference for Bond fans to figure out.

So who could this character be? Will the character play a role in a future Young Bond novel?

    Let the guessing game begin.

  7. Charlie Higson in Los Angeles

    By David Winter on 2005-05-04

CBn was on the scene last night when Young Bond author Charlie Higson appeared at Borders Books in Torrance, California to promote SilverFin. This was Higson’s fifth stop in his seven city U.S. book tour. Most of the attendees were a bit older than the Young Bond pre-teen target audience. “I’m glad to see so many kids here,” quipped Higson when he appeared at 7:00.

    Charlie Higson and Athena Stamos

In person, Higson appears much younger than in his pictures. He is also quite soft-spoken and witty. Considering he is a major TV star in the UK, he’s surprisingly humble and self-effacing about himself and his work.

Higson started his talk by explaining how he got the job and his intention to create a good, rousing adventure novel and not a “boy spy” book. “This is not Cody Banks or Spy Kids,” he said.

He also talked about how Ian Fleming Publications (IFP) wanted to stay true to Fleming and initiate a whole new James Bond “line” with the new series. However, a problem arose in that Fleming fudged James Bond’s age throughout his books (and the films have fudged it even more). IFP and Higson made a decision to firmly plant Bond’s birth date in the year 1920, making him 13-years-old in SilverFin.

Higson then retrieved a copy of Ian Fleming’s You Only Live Twice and read a section from James Bond’s official obituary — the only time Fleming wrote about Bond’s past in any real detail. He explained this is what he used as the basics for Bond’s background in SilverFin. But Higson cautions he will keep Bond at Eton for more than “two halves” as stated in the obit. He fears purists will “crucify” him for this (and he wasn’t kidding, he really is worried about fan reaction here). He said he will work it all out in Book 5 — but I say what I think Fleming would say on this matter, “Don’t worry about it.”

Higson then spoke about the real Eton of the 1930s and read the introductory paragraph in which we meet young James Bond. He noted afterwards how he thought a boy at Eton would introduce himself quite formally as “Bond, James Bond,” thereby forming a lifetime habit. (Quite clever, that.)

Higson then read from the chapter in which we meet the villain of the book, Lord Hellebore. He apologizing for making his villain an American, and for his own poor attempt at doing an American accent. “This will be my revenge for all those American actors who come over and try to do and English accents,” he said with a grin.

Far from being offended, the crowd seemed to enjoy being cast as the villain — which is always the best role anyway.

After the talk there was a lively Q&A session in which a few interesting new details about SilverFin and the Young Bond series emerged:

     Young Bond by Kev Walker

Young James Bond by Kev Walker

    • Higson will probably not be writing the Young Bond graphic novels himself, but he is a big fan of “comics” and hopes IFP will get a major graphic novelist for the new series (which Higson will oversee).
    • Higson was originally commissioned to write only one Young Bond book with the idea of there being a different writer for each of the five novels. But one by one the other writers “sort of fell away” and the full job was handed to Higson.
    • Higson completed the SilverFin manuscript well before IFP made the formal announcement of the Young Bond series. They wanted to see if the book worked before they committed to the concept.
    • Higson seemed excited about Book 2 and repeated what CBners already know about Sardinia, art theft, and bandits. But he added that he has a very Bond-like climax set in a cave “with lots of gunfire,” etc.
    • IFP planned to release Book 2 in Fall ’05 in conjunction with the release of Casino Royale. But when the film was delayed a year, IFP decided they didn’t need to rush the release, hence the push back to Jan ’06.
    • Higson said IFP has many exciting James Bond projects in the works with an announcement of something very cool coming soon. He mentioned a few of these projects, but then cautioned, “I don’t know what I can talk about and what I can’t.”
    • When the inevitable question about a Young Bond film arouse, Hisgon acknowledged that the question of James Bond films right is a complex one, but Eon doesn’t automatically own the film rights to the Young Bond series. Still, IFP wants to establish the books before they think about doing any Young Bond films.

(It should be noted that during the Q&A, CBn’s own Athena007’s cellphone rang out the James Bond theme, drawing a very amused reaction from Higson and the assembled crowd.)

Young Bond Book 1 – SilverFin

After the Q&A, Mr. Higson signed copies of SilverFin and chatted one on one with all the attendees. He recalled doing his CBn Interview and said he thought it “helped.” He’s been pleased with fan reaction to his book.

As the crowd dispersed, Higson signed a stack of books for the store (yes, you can get a signed SilverFin from Borders Books in Torrance, folks).

Charlie Higson continues his book tour Thursday in New Jersey. The tour concludes Friday in Washington D.C.

All in all, it was a terrific time and a real treat to meet the man who now holds James Bond’s literary license to kill.

    U.S. Paperback Update:
Despite a listing on Amazon.com showing a U.S. paperback edition of SilverFin being released concurrently with the hardcover, IFP has confirmed for CBn that this listing is a mistake and the release of a U.S. paperback edition of SilverFin is not imminent.

Already a best seller in the UK, SilverFin, the first Young Bond novel by Charlie Higson, is officially released today in the U.S. (although many online retailers started shipping the hardcover as early as two weeks ago).

To coincide with the U.S. release, Ian Fleming Publications have unveiled a second illustration of young James Bond by Kev Walker; this one shows him in his Eton school uniform.

The U.S. edition of SilverFin from publisher Miramax/Hyperion will be slightly edited for content considered too “racy”, i.e., the sentence, “…her muscular legs gripping him like steel”, has been cut from the description of a wrestling match between Bond and “Bond Girl” Wilder Lawless.

Unlike the UK edition, which only came as a trade paperback, U.S. buyers have a choice of either a hardcover ($16.95) or paperback ($7.99) edition. (UPDATE: The paperback edition is being released at a later date TBA.)

The help promote the book in the U.S., author Charlie Higson will embark on a seven city reading and signing tour starting today in Chicago. The author will then move onto Denver, San Francisco, Seattle, Los Angeles, New York (New Jersey), and finally Washington D.C.

SilverFin is also being released this week in Portugal. A German edition has been announced for August.

    Young Bond Book 2

The already completed Young Bond Book Two, which currently has the working title Double M, will be released in January 2006. It will be set largely in Sardinia (a location featured in the 1977 James Bond film classic The Spy Who Loved Me) and will involve art theft, smuggling, and bandits. Higson reports it will be an even longer book than the 372 page SilverFin.

Last weekend, Ian Fleming Publications released the first official image of James Bond at age 13. The illustration by Kev Walker is reportedly being considered for use on the cover of Book 2.

  9. Young Bond Gets Graphic

    By Matt Weston on 2005-04-24

Ian Fleming Publications has unveiled plans to spin off their successful Young Bond concept into a series of graphic novels based on the character. The illustrated adventures of Young Bond are reportedly due out at the end of 2006.

     Young Bond by Kev Walker

Young James Bond by Kev Walker

This is the first announcement of an expansion of the Young Bond franchise beyond the five planned novels by author Charlie Higson. Whether the new graphic novels will be adaptations of the Higson novels or original adventures is not yet known.

In conjunction with this announcement, IFP has revealed the first official image of James Bond at age 13.

The image, crafted by illustrator Kev Walker (best known for his work on the Judge Dread comics), keeps in-style with other illustrations featured on the official Young Bond website. Walker’s image shows Bond as a lanky youth with shaggy hair, loose trousers and a rather daggy-looking jacket, a far cry from the tuxedo-clad spy we’re all familiar with.

“The hardest thing when writing SilverFin was picturing the young Bond in my mind,” says author Charlie Higson. “We have so many different images of Bond as man, what would he have looked like as a boy? I was really pleased that we managed to get an artist as good as Kev Walker to imagine him for me. Now I know what he looks like. Kev’s also done a fantastic job of making the thirties look cool and exciting for a modern audience. Young Bond and his world have really come alive.”

Corinne Turner, Managing Director of Ian Fleming Publications, says: “This visualisation of Young Bond is an exciting stage in the development of the series. We want to take our readers beyond the books, and we think young boys will identify with the dynamic graphic novel style.”

The image is reportedly being considered for the cover of Higson’s second Young Bond novel due out in January of next year.

The first Young Bond novel, SilverFin, has already sold 30,000 copies in the UK and is due for release in the US next week (although many online retailers are shipping the book early).

No cover art has been revealed, but it’s likely the art will be a variation on the now familiar “eel” artwork that has so far graced all editions. This will be the first original continuation novel since Raymond Benson’s 1998 The Facts of Death to be translated into German.

SilverFin has reportedly been sold to 15 different countries. The book was first released in the UK in March. It will be released in the U.S. and Portugal next week.

The release date for Stille Wasser sind tödlich is August 2005.
