  4. Young Bond 4 Title Revealed On Amazon: 'Hurricane Gold'

    By Devin Zydel on 2007-04-22

Big news today for Young Bond fans. According to a report from the Young Bond Dossier, the title of Charlie Higson’s next novel has been revealed on amazon: Hurricane Gold.

Both the Canadian and Japanese amazon websites list the novel as a 400-page long hardback. In addition, a special Hurricane Gold limited collector’s edition hardback (for £16.99) is listed at WH Smith with a release date of 6 September 2007. Time will tell whether this collectors edition will be in line with the previous SilverFin and Blood Fever limited edition copies or something completely new. The regular hardback is listed at a price of £9.99.

Something else to keep in mind is that the Hurricane Gold has not yet been confirmed by Ian Fleming Publications (IFP). As ‘zencat’ of the Young Bond Dossier points out, Raymond Benson’s third continuation novel, High Time To Kill, first appeared on amazon under its working title A Better Way To Die.

The official news release regarding the novel from the beginning of the month: ‘A treacherous road trip in Mexico…. The deadliest challenge yet! Young Bond 4 will be published in the UK in hardback in September 2007. Further exciting news to be released soon.’

  5. 'GoldenBoy' Tarnished

    By Heiko Baumann on 2007-04-20
Young Bond 3: GoldenBoy German cover artwork

    GoldenBoy

Only 4 months after the release of Charlie Higson’s third Young Bond novel Double or Die, the German version of the book, re-titled GoldenBoy was published by Arena Verlag. A point of special interest (as in any translation of Double or Die) was certainly how the numerous puzzles in the book would be translated, especially Alex Fairburn’s letter containing the cryptic clues.

Those of you who have read the book certainly know that one of the clues is an anagram that consists of two names, Speccy Stevens and Luc Oliver in the English version, the solution of which is “Solve seven cryptic clues”. A clever move, as this allows to make translations simpler by just translating the solution and then – working backwards – create new names out of it.

In German, the solution is “Loese sieben geheime Raetsel”. Translator Petra Koob-Pawis originally came up up with the names “Tim E. Benessie” and “Helge A.E. Loeser” for the anagram, which Charlie Higson somehow found to be not “Eton-English” enough and thus demanded a last-minute change to the names “Tim Bloese” and “Ashe Seelie-Greene”.

And then, Murphy’s Law came into action: even though Arena made a special proofreading run to avoid that this happens, somehow – certainly very much to the confusion of the young reader – the two sets of names got mixed and appeared in the first edition: when Pritpal says that these names are the most glaring false notes, it’s suddenly “Tim Bloese” and “Tim E. Benessie”, but when they solve the anagram, it’s back to Ashe Seelie-Greene again.

The Benessie name also reappears when the boys start working to slove the rest of the clues after they got the prints. And again, when they present themselves at Charnage’s house, James says “We’re Tim Bloese and Tim E. Benessie” – and then turns around to Percy and says “You’re Ashe, I’m Tim.”

The second name, “Helge A.E. Loeser” does not appear in the first edition, but Arena was kind enough to give the information on CBn’s request.

Arena wishes to apologise to all German readers and says that the errors will certainly be corrected in the following editions.

Regarding the early release date for Young Bond 4, Arena – like all Bond fans – was also surprised by that news. As of now, there are no plans to release the German version of this book in 2007 – which nonetheless may be subject to change.

GoldenBoy can be ordered from Amazon.de.

  9. Wilder Lawless to Ride Back Into James' Life?

    By Matt Weston on 2007-04-09

Yesterday, CBn reported that Double or Die’s villainess Babushka may return in a future Young Bond novel.

Today comes another clue from The Young Bond Rough Guide To London that one more familiar face may return&mdashthis time, James Bond’s feisty Scottish ally Wilder Lawless, from SilverFin.

In her character profile, it is noted that Wilder Lawless is a “free-spirited Scottish lass who helps Bond in SilverFin and looks destined to ride back into Bond’s life.”

Of course, James crossed paths with his other SilverFin pal, Red Kelly, in this year’s Double or Die.

A red herring, or are the final two Young Bond books set to become a big old reunion as the series draws to a close?

Stay tuned to CBn for more details as Young Bond 4’s September release date approaches…

  10. 'Double Or Die's' Babushka To Return?

    By Devin Zydel on 2007-04-08

As previously announced, 7 April marked the release of the Young Bond Rough Guide To London, the compelling guide to Charlie Higson’s Young Bond Dossier, this new release contains a few details on a possible villain to appear in future Young Bond novels:

‘In a series of desperate gambles that take him to London’s West and East ends and to Cambridge, James is helped by his old pal Red Kelly, hunted by two bickering assassins and faces a spymaster called Babushka. Her name may mean “granny” in Russian but she is James’s most ruthless foe yet–escaping so she can, potentially, wreak more havoc in future novels.’

It was reported in August of last year that Higson’s fourth Young Bond novel would feature a female in the main villain role–could this possibly be Babushka? Stay tuned.
