  2. No plans for a By Royal Command Collector's Edition

    By Devin Zydel on 2010-04-16

Disappointing news today for Young Bond fans and James Bond collectors.

Publisher Puffin Books has confirmed to the Young Bond Dossier that there are no plans to move ahead with a Limited Collector’s Edition for By Royal Command.

After the novel’s original publication in late 2008, many Bond fans expected such an edition would eventually follow as was the case for Charlie Higson’s four previous Young Bond adventures.

Unfortunately, the less-than-stellar economic situation around the world forced Puffin to reevaluate and they decided not to produce the By Royal Command special edition.

    Perhaps someday…

  3. Lender streamlining could help MGM's cause

    By Devin Zydel on 2010-04-15

The Hollywood Reporter – The recent consolidation of MGM debt into a fewer number of individual lenders could make the cumbersome task of restructuring the studio more manageable.

Buying on the public market, about a half-dozen lenders have accumulated more than 51% of Lion debt. That means a relatively small group wields substantial control over decisions looming large in the Century City studio’s future.

The three biggest debtholders are Anchorage Advisors, Highland Capital and Davidson Kempner. Their reps are among those attending a meeting of a lenders steering committee that J.P. Morgan led Thursday as well as one set for today in Los Angeles.

Like a previous meeting of the steering committee, lenders are attempting to educate themselves about how MGM operates and how the studio might restructure finances and operations to compete in Hollywood on firmer footing. But instead of management presentations, which took up much of the previous meeting of Lion lenders, the committee is hearing from Hollywood notables outside the studio.

The names of former industry executives including Jonathan Dolgen and Peter Chernin have circulated as possible candidates to run MGM. But for now, such Hollywood VIPs are being consulted for advice on the studio’s restructuring options.

On the other hand, turnaround specialist Stephen Cooper eventually will segue out of his role as MGM CEO and move on to the next corporate crisis in another industry. So those cozying up to the lenders committee as consultants could resurface in operating roles.

Spyglass principals Gary Barber and Roger Birnbaum also are among those held in high regard for their business prowess, and a key lenders-group insider has touted the duo as potential full-time Lion keepers following a restructuring.

For much of the past year, MGM has grappled with a range of tough choices as it struggles under a crushing $3.7 billion debt load. The Lion has until May 14 to make a $200 million-plus interest payment on its debt as well as a $250 million principal payment.

Studio management has been huddling with a J.P. Morgan-led lenders steering committee on how to pump some capital into the Lion before then. To do that, a debt restructuring likely would shift most studio equity from current owners to the lenders group.

That’s assuming Time Warner or others participating in a recent auction of the studio decide against upping their bids, which were deemed too low to accept. Offers came in at $1.5 billion or lower, and MGM lenders—who must approve any sale of the studio—likely would nix anything substantially below $2 billion.

At least that was the thinking when there were more than 140 debt holders in the mix, with a substantial minority stridently opposed to approving anything less than the current market value of MGM’s tradeable public debt. Yet the debt recently has been trading at less than 50 cents on the dollar, suggesting a sub-$2 billion valuation.

Now that the number of lenders has been whittled down substantially, there’s a greater chance that Cooper will win a consensus for some sort of reorganization plan. And that’s assuming lenders don’t conspire among themselves to force an a la carte sale of MGM’s choicest assets such as the James Bond film rights, yet another of the possible outcomes to the studio’s months-long financial crisis.

A handful of companies including Qualia Capital, Access Industries, News Corp. and Time Warner have agreed to lend MGM upward of $500 million in new equity capital.

The Lion’s current ownership group includes Providence Equity, TPG Capital, Sony, Comcast, DLJ Merchant and Quadrangle.

  6. Virgin Books: Bond Films due for release in September 2010

    By Devin Zydel on 2010-04-14

A new Amazon.co.uk listing has appeared online for Virgin Books: Bond Films by Steve Lavington and Jim Smith.

If the book sounds somewhat familiar, that’s because it was first released way back in late 2002 to tie-in with the release of Pierce Brosnan’s Die Another Day and mark the 40th anniversary of the James Bond film series [see CommanderBond.net’s review here].

This new listing tags the book as a hardback (the original 2002 release was a trade paperback) retailing for £16.99 and due out on 30 September 2010. Cover artwork and a publisher’s blurb are still forthcoming.

The original 2002 blurb follows below:

The Bond films are the longest-running and the most financially successful movie franchise in the history of cinema and have entered popular culture. James Bond’s answer to a request for his name, “Bond, James Bond”, topped a poll of the greatest film quotes of all time, and if you mention a Martini to anyone old enough to drink one, they’re bound to come out with the immortal line “shaken not stirred”.

From Dr No in 1962 through to Die Another Day in 2002, this film guide covers the 20 Bond films, 40 years of film-making and five actors in the starring role (six if you count David Niven in Casino Royale). Each film was a product of its time – Moonraker, for example, was made because of the success of Star Wars – and was influenced by whichever director was drafted in to move James Bond through his many assignments.

This book is also the story of two eastern European immigrants, Saltzman and Broccoli, who acquired the rights to Ian Fleming’s character of James Bond and built an empire out of the sexist spy. The guide includes categories such as source to screen, set peices and gadgets, and ongoing counters of on-screen deaths, martinis ordered and successful seductions.

CommanderBond.net will keep you updated as more details on this new hardback edition come to light. In the meantime, feel free to pre-order for a discounted price online:

  9. Sir Sean Connery IS Sir Billi

    By Devin Zydel on 2010-04-11

BILLI PRODUCTIONS LTD IN POST-PRODUCTION ON SCOTLAND’S FIRST ANIMATED FEATURE FILM SIR BILLI

Sir Sean Connery Stars in New Animated Family Film, Scheduled for Completion Summer 2010

Embarking on Scotland’s first full-length animated feature film, Glasgow-based Billi Productions Ltd and independent studio Glasgow Animation have started post-production including final colorization, lighting and rendering on the new animated family film Sir Billi, it was announced today by Sascha Hartmann, co-founder of Billi Productions Ltd. The production team is also unveiling the first in a series of animation stills from the film.

Hartmann is directing Sir Billi from a screenplay written by his wife Tessa Hartmann, from an original story they developed together. John Fraser is producing, with Sir Sean Connery serving as executive producer.

Sir Sean Connery IS Sir Billi

Sir Sean Connery IS Sir Billi

Expanded to a feature length CGI film from a 2006 short concept, the heart-warming and hilarious adventure film Sir Billi features an all-star cast including Academy Award winner Sir Sean Connery in his first ever animated voice-over role [CBn Note: Sean Connery also provided the voice for ‘Draco’ in 1996’s DragonHeart], and Tony Award winner Alan Cumming. All animation has been created in-house by the Glasgow Animation team of 60 creative professionals who have been hard at work since the inception of the project and created proprietary technology specifically for the film. Having developed a short film teaser using Maya software in 2005, the company then developed and created a unique proprietary production pipeline in order to complete a full-length feature. What began as a budgetary constraint proved to be advantageous as the film now has a very distinctive look. Under the direction of Sascha Hartmann, the small but highly skilled team is comprised of Creative Technical Director Kevin McCormack, Supervising Head of Animation Kenneth Chan and Head of GA Pipeline Federico Fiore.

Rich with authentic and discreetly embedded humorous details from the Highland village scenes, the creative team also incorporated artwork of Connery’s wife, French artist Micheline Roquebrune, into Sir Billi’s cottage. Sascha Hartmann created a Sir Billi tartan for the film that was exclusively manufactured by Lochcarron of Scotland, based in Hawick. The ‘Sir Billi’ tartan fabric was woven over a period of ten weeks, then registered as a member of the Scottish Tartans Authority, proving its authenticity for the hero’s real-life and film wardrobes.

Academy Award nominated Scottish composer Patrick Doyle, (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Sense and Sensibility), created the film’s music score and also lends his voice as a key character in the film. British singing legend Dame Shirley Bassey also joined the project to perform the title track ‘Guardian of the Highlands,’ marking the first time Connery and Shirley have worked together since the 1964 James Bond film Goldfinger [and 1971’s Diamonds are Forever].

Scotland’s first full length animated feature also showcases the voice acting talents of Miriam Margolyes (Harry Potter, Romeo & Juliet), Alex Norton (Pirates of the Caribbean, Taggart), Ford Kiernan (Chewin’ the Fat, The Last Great Wilderness), Barbara Rafferty (The Wicker Man, River City), Greg Hemphill (Still Game, Chewin the Fat), Kieron Elliot (How to Train Your Dragon), Ruby Wax, John Amabile, Larry Sullivan, Chris Jai Alex and NYC night queen Amy Sacco.

    Synopsis – Sir Billi

When tragedy strikes in the Scottish Highlands, there can be only one man for the job – Sir William Sedgewick, aka Sir Billi (Sir Sean Connery)! A roller coaster adventure, Sir Billi braves treacherous ravines and hazardous gullies with his sidekick Gordon the Goat (Alan Cumming) to save Bessie Boo and Wee Dave the rabbit as they hurtle down a scenic yet perilous river.

A heart-warming and hilarious action packed family movie, where thrilling car chases, heroic skydiving and daring stunts from this octogenarian, fueled with encounters with a hostile submarine, will keep you at the edge of your seat!

Behind the eccentric behavior of this tartan plaid overall-attired widower, he reveals a compassionate spirit with his unrivalled love for his late wife. Is it too late for this endearing grandpa to find a new lady friend once again? Will Lady Serena, his daughter and grandson Jake even contemplate such a development from this adored Scot? Amongst it all in this race against time, will Sir Billi get to Bessie Boo first?

Explore the powerful force of this international Highland community, with its unrivalled landscapes, breathtaking scenery and hidden secrets. Discover the power of the local people when they unite as one against evil and embark on an expedition unlike any other.

Sir Sean Connery has been heavily involved in the making of the film since its inception and was inspired to take on the lead role of Sir Billi after being contacted by the husband and wife producing team who forwarded a short demo reel of the endearing grandfather Sir Billi in action. “We sent a DVD to Sir Sean via a mutual acquaintance and heard nothing for a few weeks when suddenly the phone rang. It was Sir Sean personally explaining that his grandchildren had taken the DVD from his home and kept it. They loved it that much. ‘If it’s good enough for them, it’s good enough for me!’ he said, and with that, we met a few weeks later when he came to Scotland. “We’ve been working closely with him ever since,” stated Tessa Hartmann.

“I’m excited to be a part of this incredible film and Scotland’s first animated feature,” said Connery. “Sir Billi is truly a first class film, with an exceptional cast, and is sure to delight audiences of all ages.”

“We knew Sir Sean was perfect for the role of Sir Billi – being a true Scottish hero and also a grandfather,” said Sascha Hartmann. “Sir Billi is the quintessential fun, caring, family-focused grandfather we all wish we could have!”

  10. Mendes confirmed, Morgan out, Marber in?

    By Matt Weston on 2010-04-11

As the future of MGM remains undecided, The Telegraph claims there’s movement behind the scenes of Bond 23.

    Peter Morgan

Peter Morgan – off Bond 23?

According to the paper, James Bond producer Barbara Broccoli has confirmed that American Beauty helmer Sam Mendes will direct the next 007 outing.

It had previously been reported that the Oscar-winning director was attached only in a “consultant” capacity.

The Telegraph also reports that The Queen screenwriter Peter Morgan is no longer working on the script for the 23rd Bond film. Morgan boarded Bond 23 alongside 007 regulars Neal Purvis and Robert Wade in June last year.

Mendes is reportedly seeking playwright and screenwriter Patrick Marber to replace Morgan on the film. Marber is the scribe behind Notes on a Scandal and Closer (having written and directed the play from which it was adapted). He has also written and starred in several projects featuring Steve Coogan’s inept TV presenter Alan Partridge, including The Day Today and Knowing Me, Knowing You.

However, the Telegraph couldn’t get confirmation of the writer switch from MGM. A studio spokesperson said, “The filmmakers say the Morgan/Marber switch is just speculation.”

Keep watching CommanderBond.net for confirmation or denial of these rumours as soon as it emerges.
