  1. Character Posters Hit Cinema Lobbies

    By daniel on 2002-09-01

Rich has written in to let us know that he's seen the Die Another Day 'character posters' in a local theatre. Rich saw 'Simone' at his local AMC Theatre and tells us hanging above the exit doors were oversized character posters.

Rich tells us that From left to right, there was Gustav Graves, Jinx (pointing a silencer to the sky), James Bond (aiming his Walther at the bottom corner of the poster), Miranda Frost, and Zao (with a pale, scarred face).

Great to hear that the publicity machine has already moved in to production!

  2. Clip of Bond Song Unofficially Confirmed!…

    By David Winter on 2002-08-28

Forum user Robster006 has tired his best to research the origins of the 35 second clip we've been hearing a lot about, and come up with this….Robster006 writes:

A fellow Madonna-mad forum member MadGuy has been in touch with Hamad over at the madonna Queendom forum to see if he could confirm if the song was really the real thing. Hamad has a few friends in the business. He has been saying that he knows a few people that have the song. Apparantly he knows the person who actually ripped the song and leaked it on Kazaa in the first place! They told him that the song is real! The bad news is that that person doesn't have any intention of leaking the entire song anytime soon! But he did mention the following piece of information:

she talks a bit in the song [Erotica/Paradise-ish] and vocoders are used…

So, we have officialy been listening to the first 35 seconds of Die Another Day. MadGuy has also been in contact with Michel Colombier to see if the song is real, so we could have another confirmation, but we haven't heard from him yet!

Interesting stuff, and a fairly solid confirmation on the song….Feel free to discuss this amazing development in this thread.

  3. First 35 seconds of Title Song Leaked!

    By David Winter on 2002-08-27

A sudden discovery of a 35 second clip of the forthcoming song for Die Another Day was found on Kazaa today, and it sent the Bond and Madonna fan communities into a frenzy.

The few bars of the song, presumably are the bars of the introduction, featuring strings by Michael Colombier, as promised, which are then cut up by the producer of the track (and producer of many of Madonna's recent tracks), Mirwais. A jumpy electronic beat is then added in the gaps of the cut string samples.

Reaction to this sudden appearance has sparked controversy, as many fans claim it is "Unbondian," though reaction to it has been positive on the whole.

Unfortunately, due to copyright reasons, we can't link directly to the song, we can merely point you in the right direction. If you wish to hear it, you will have to download Kazaa and try and gain access to a copy.

Feel free to discuss any opinions on the song in this thread.

  4. Bond on the Dance Floor

    By Luke Freeman on 2002-08-23

Five men have worn the James Bond tuxedo with pride and distinction over the last forty years. And over this time Bond experts and wannabes alike have argued constantly over which one is the best. Ofcourse it wasn’t much of an argument back in the mid-sixties, back when Connery was the only Bond and smoking was still good for you. But when Lazenby came and when, and Moore burst onto the scene, the citizens of the world were divided forever, and they continue to be divided, with Dalton and Brosnan in recent times putting their hand up as candidates for “Best James Bond”.

It saddens me to say it, but after forty years the arguments are getting tired. No one has managed to convince anyone to defect, to change his or her mind on who the “Best” Bond is. Countless polls have been taken, but all the people who don’t have a clue just say “Connery”, and Pierce Brosnan keeps rigging the votes. Truth is, there is no way to determine who is the “Best” Bond because the title “Best” on its own is too subjective. Best at what ? Best at delivering witty lines, best at love scenes, best bumper car driver, the title “Best” is too hard to define, and that is why the Best Bond award can never be given out.

But there is a title that can be awarded to one of the five actors, the title of “Best Dancer”. Yes, “which Bond is the best dancer?” an age old question that has been debated for generations. Now this is a question that can be resolved, no, will be resolved, right here today. You readers should consider yourselves very fortunate indeed to witness this one in a lifetime event, of which you may only see once in your live.

There wasn’t allot of dancing in Doctor No, especially after Professor Dent’s tap dancing number was cut out shortly before release. The history of Bond dancing can be probably be traced back to the gypsy dancer in the following Bond film, From Russia in Love. Ofcourse Bond himself getting on the dance floor didn’t happen until a couple of years later in Thunderball, where he dances with Fiona Volpe at the Kiss Kiss Club. It was only for one song, and Fiona got shot before the dance was finished, but it was an instant success, and this little taste of Bond dancing was enough to whip audiences into a frenzy. People went back to the theatres again and again to watch Bond dance, hence why Thuderball is the most successful of the Bonds in terms of ticket sales.

After the success there it looked like dancing may become a regular feature of the Bond films, as much a part of the formula as the girls, the guns and the gadgets, but sadly it wasn’t to be. Roger Moore took over the role and since he uses a stunt man for pretty much everything, the producers decided Bond would dance no more. Any scenes with Bond grooving were given to other characters, which explains those people dancing with glee during the funeral in Live and Let Die (and why Bond doesn’t appear in the pretitle scene of that film). Imagine how much better The Man with the Golden Gun would have been if Bond had done the dance scene instead of the dancer with the bullet in her belly button. When it was first declared that Bond’s dancing and prancing days were over, fans were furious, many boycotting The Man with the Golden Gun in protest (hence why it’s one of the least successful Bond films). But after that it was accepted that while Moore was a great Bond, he wasn’t a great dancer, and eventually dancing in Bond films was pretty much forgotten.

When Timothy Dalton took over, dancing was slowly eased back into the pictures. There was some dancing during Felix and Della’s wedding in Licence to Kill and subtle grooving touches in both The Living Daylights and Licence to Kill. This was to prepare fans for the 17th Bond adventure set for release in 1991, which, as I’m told from a very reliable source, was going to be an all out musical, with singing and dancing by all the characters, the works. But then all the legal hassles started and the plans for the musical Bond film were put on the shelf. When Bond returned in 1995, we were treated to Pierce Brosnan in GoldenEye, but sadly the production of the musical Bond film was never resumed.

Now that you know the history of Bond on the dance floor, you can get an appreictaion of just what this award mean, what it symbolises, what it stands for. But when it comes to judging which Bond should be crowned best dancer, it’s really only a one horse race. You see, because of his haircut, Timothy Dalton is the only Bond that one can picture in a Saturday Night Fever pose, and frankly, that’s enough for me to judge him the winner of this prestigious honour.

    Three cheers for Timothy Dalton.

    Until next time,

    Freemo

  5. Ten Minutes Of Footage Shown In Australia!

    By daniel on 2002-08-21

Garth Franklin from Dark Horizons was lucky enough to catch ten minutes worth of Die Another Day footage recently, and he's posted a report about it on his website.

Of course it does contain certain spoilers, so you'll have to hightlight to read.

    Spoiler Warning (Highlight To Read)

The clip started off with Bond and a fellow agent (Colin Salmon) in an office hallway sneaking down and taking out armed guys in black outfits who seem to be conducting a raid. Bond steps into an office and there’s M held at gunpoint in front of one of the men. Bond takes a few steps forward, pauses and then fires (cut to black). Lots of stuff is seen – Rick Yune appears in many scenes with a bald head, pale eyes and these wierd silver metallic stretch mark style rivulets down half his face. M comments to Bond welcoming him ‘back’ as such from what sounds like a retirement, there’s the ice car chase which looks spectacular, Berry popping out of the water in her bikini, lots of scenes involving lasers, and the money shot – an awesome FX scene where it looks like half a forest explodes upwards from a shockwave. A bit of the plot is elaborated upon – a stunt where a man parachutes into Buckingham Palace introduces us to the Richard Branson-esque Gustav Graves whose developing a satellite technology called Icarus which will in effect create a ‘second sun’ of sorts. However like all baddies there’s a lot more to it than that.

The footage screening was organised by Fox in Australia. Garth tells us that tt was mentioned afterwards that the film contains around 400 something CG FX shots, about 20-30 times that of an average Bond film. Expect a trailer using elements from this footage to appear shortly.

Sounds very promising. There are some special effects in there that I'd really love to see!

If you'd like to discuss this news please do so in this thread of the Die Another Day Forums. See you there!

  6. The Passing Of Peter Hunt

    By daniel on 2002-08-17

It is with great sadness that I report the passing of Peter Hunt.

The director of On Her Majesty's Secret Service Hunt's experience with the world of James Bond began in 1962 as he was chosen as Editor on the first James Bond adventure, Dr No.

Born in London in 1925, Hunt studied the violin at the London College of Music and the history of art at the University of Rome before the lure of the cinema made him abandon his original ambitions and become a clapper boy at Denham Studios in 1947. After working as an assistant editor on The Man Who Watched Trains Go By (1952), he edited his first film, Stranger from Venus, in 1954; his subsequent films as editor included A Hill in Korea (1956), The Admirable Crichton (1957), Ferry to Hong Kong (1959) and Sink the Bismarck! (1960).

After Dr No Hunt went on to edit From Russia With Love, Goldfinger, Thunderball and You Only Live Twice, also working as a second unit director on YOLT.

Hunt passed away on three days ago August 14 in Santa Monica, California. He leaves behind one son and an amazing influence over the world of James Bond, and cinema as a whole.
