  1. A Different Perspective

    By daniel on 2002-11-07

It is hard to be objective when it comes to reviewing an audio book, as there are so many elements one can be sidetracked into reviewing. At the same time those elements have to be included in the review, but the most important part is always the audio itself.

The Unabridged Brilliance Audio Die Another Day Audio Book spans 4 casette tapes or 2 CDs and is approximately 6 hours in length. It is based upon Raymond Benson’s 245 page novelisation of Die Another Day, which is taken from a screenplay by Neal Purvis and Robert Wade.

Sitting down and listening to the adventure that is Die Another Day is a vastly different experience from sitting down and watching the adventure unfold onscreen, but this doesn’t ever seem to detract from the audio book, nor does it detract from the novelisation. It isn’t necessarily true that Raymond Benson’s work is better then the film, but the novel, and in turn the audio book, does posses a unique quality; scenes that will never appear on the silver screen. It is obvious when listing to the story that particular scenes, for instance flash backs, just won’t make it to an print of Die Another Day. The novelisation definitely feels closer to Benson’s Tomorrow Never Dies then The World Is Not Enough due to its added scenes.

The novelisation is read by American Michael Page, and first uncertainties about an American accent reading a Bond novel were soon dispelled. This is largely due to Page’s theatre background, most modern actors aiming for a neutral accent that Page easily finds. Furthermore, he brings in accents for particular characters, some of which he does repeat, but never in the same scene. Jinx and Miranda Frost have particularly different accents and Zao’s voice is brilliantly delivered. Colonel Moon’s voice is almost touch and go at times as it sometimes comes across as a satire Asian accent.

Despite his theatre background, some of Page’s pronunciations may not hit directly home with the audience. For instance, his pronunciation of Omega tended towards ‘a-mega’. Another pronunciation that ‘felt’ strange was that of Zao’s name. To date it had always been sounded, in my head at least, as ‘Zay-oh’ rather Page’s pronunciation is closer to ‘Zah-oh’. Page’s pronunciation is similar to that of the onscreen pronunciation, so any unfamiliarity will be seemingly dispensed after the films release.

An audio-book is definitely not for everyone, however, Brilliance Audio’s Die Another Day Audio Book does ‘work’ and is very entertaining. Bond fans should definitely buy either a copy of the novelisation or a copy of the audio book, depending on their reading preferences.

The Unabridged Brilliance Audio Die Another Day Audio Book can be bought online from Barnes and Noble and amazon.com:

  3. More Details on US Run-Time

    By daniel on 2002-11-07

Debate continues as to the lenght of the run-time of the United States version of Die Another Day with CommanderBond.Net learning of another possible run-time.

Evidence has come to hand indicating that the US run-time could also be 129 minutes, the run time coming from an screening invitation sent to MGM Employees. The MGM screening will take place on November 12.

However, the 122 minute run time, which was taken from a press screening invite, still seems a possibility. One source has told CommanderBond.Net that “run times published on the screening invites tend to be accurate since they are intended to be included in the published review”.

Meanwhile, Fox France has confirmed the running time for French cut of Die Another Day is 134 minutes.

  4. Rittenhouse 40th Anniversary Trading Cards

    By daniel on 2002-11-07

I haven’t been a card collector since the age of eight, but I find my James Bond interest a good enough excuse to check out Rittenhouse’s James Bond 40th Anniversary Trading Card set.

To put it simply, Rittenhouse have excelled with the 40th Anniversary cards, especially in comparison to past James Bond trading cards which never quite appealed to me.

Throughout the complete set of cards, buyers will find a variety of formats. The standard base cards feature several pictures from a particular Bond film, with three cards dedicated to each Bond film. Overall, the card designs are quite unique and are especially effective with the additional 40th Anniversary Foil Logo.

The 40th Anniversary Trading Card set also has a series of ‘special cards’, most of which can be found randomly inserted in card packs. The randomly inserted cards consist of Game Cards (1:1) which all together spell out James Bond, Bond Tech (1:1) which feature Q-Branch gadgets, Bond Villains (1:2), Bond Girls (1:4), Autograph Cards (1:10) and Costume Cards (1:120).

The most interesting of the randomly inserted cards is definitely the Bond Girls cards which vary from the usual rectangular format of trading cards. The randomly inserted villain cards are unique and do differ from the base sets in design, however, they’re hardly exceptional. Despite some fantastic designs throughout the whole set, it’s the rarer cards that will really bring a smile to a persons face.

The set does, of course, have its faults. Most disappointing is the exclusion of any Die Another Day cards. However, the problem has been rectified with the recent announcement of a 40th Anniversary Expansion set which will include, amongst other things, cards dedicated to the latest film. Even so, it would have been better to find them in the original sets.

The James Bond 40th Anniversary Trading Card set consists of 60 Base Cards, 9 Game Cards, 19 Bond Tech, 19 Bond Villains, 19 Bond Girls, 22 Autographed Cards, and 3 Costume Cards.

Rittenhouse’s James Bond 40th Anniversary Trading Card set can be bought online from Rittenhouse directly or from SpyGuise.

  5. International Run-Times May Differ

    By daniel on 2002-11-06

Amidst talk of raunchier sex scenes CommanderBond.Net has learnt that film censors world wide may enforce cuts on Die Another Day in order for the film to garner ratings sought by distributors MGM and Fox International.

The first evidence of cuts to the film has surfaced in the United States with those invited to press screenings being told Die Another Day has a run-time of 122 minutes, and is rated PG-13. Meanwhile, across the Atlantic in the United Kingdom, those intived to press screenings are being told to expect a film with a run-time of 135 minutse.

Despite the differences, the possibility has arisen of further cuts to the United Kingdom version. The British Board of Film Classifcation is yet to hand down a rating for Die Another Day, though press screening invites do note a 12A rating but also confirm the rating is yet to be confirmed. The inclusion highlights Fox International’s desire for a 12A rated film.

World-wide ratings are yet to be confirmed, however, it has been rumoured that the German version of Die Another Day will be cut down from 135 minutes to achieve a lower classification.

  6. Photos from NYC Omega Event

    By daniel on 2002-11-06

Photos from Monday’s Omega New York City event have been slow to hit the Internet, but photographer and avid Bond fan Tom Stroud was on hand at the event and has snapped some great photos from the event.

Tom has several photos of actor Pierce Brosnan at the event, and also several more of some of the Bond gadgets that were on display. The Q-Boat and the parahawks from The World Is Not Enough are just two of the gadgets you’ll see photos of at Tom’s site.

Update: SpyGuise have updated with their own report on the event, including seventeen pictures from the event and from Die Another Day. Click here to see it.

  7. Car Modification Footage Online

    By daniel on 2002-11-06

It’s one of the most anticipated parts of Die Another Day, the car chase termed the ‘Ice Ballet’ by Vic Armstrong. Bond’s Aston Martin Vanquish required some heavy modification for filming purposes and T3 have some exclusive footage online.

If you’re hoping for some glimpses of Iceland, you’ll be disappointed. However, the two videos do give an exclusive glimpse inside the workshops at Pinewood Studio’s outside London, and also to footage from a secret testing location. Also included are interviews with crew members such as Andy Smith responsiible for the car modifications.

Head over to T3 to see the two videos.

Thanks to BaldGuy007 for the tip-off.

  8. What The Box Office Prophets Say

    By Brett McAleer on 2002-11-04

The crystal ball gazers at Box Office Prophets have made their predictions for November and the general consensus of opinion is that James Bond will come in second to Harry Potter, which is no real surprise to most pundits.

Of the six “prophets” who actually quantified their predictions only one suggested that Die Another Day will top the box office, four ranked it as coming in at No. 2, while one predicted the No. 3 spot for Bond.

One “prophet” has boldly predicted that Die Another Day will gross USD$130,000,000 against Harry Potter’s USD$320,000,000 and that Halle Berry’s presence will be a major factor.

Stay tuned for further reports on the box office results of Die Another Day as they come to hand.

  9. Charity Screening Tickets For Auction

    By daniel on 2002-11-03

It’s November and the Charity Screenings for Die Another Day are literally only days away, and tickets for both the United States and United Kingdom Charity Screenings are now being auctioned off on eBay.

First off, the Motion Picture and Television Fund are auctioning off two tickets to the US Charity Screening, from which they will benefit. Up for auction are four tickets to the November 11 Screening. The tickets will entitle the winners to walk down the red carpet, watch Die Another Day and gain entry to the VIP after-party. The US Charity Screening auction can be found here.

Tickets for the Royal Premier have also appeared on eBay, however, unlike the US tickets these are a private auction. For auction are 2 side balcony/circle tickets at the Royal Albert Hall on November 18. That auction can be found here.

While the tickets do seem expensive, it goes without saying that they are extremely rare and would make for a once in a lifetime opportunity.

Thanks to Viper for the alert.

  10. Madonna's Single Debuts at Three

    By daniel on 2002-11-03

Madonna’s Die Another Day title song is making waves around the world as the single goes on sale in stores.

In the United Kingdom the title song has debuted in third spot. In front of it are ‘Heaven’ by DJ Sammy and ‘Dilemma’ by Nelly; this is also ‘Heaven’s first week in the charts. There is debate as to whether or not the single will raise any higher in the charts as it is common for UK singles to peak in their debut position.

On the United States Billboard Hot 100 the single has reached eighth position.

If you’d like to discuss the chart position please visit this thread of the Die Another Day Forums. Thanks to Loomis for the news alert.
