  1. 'Just One More' For Brosnan?

    By @mrpauldunphy on 2003-07-19

After the ceremony honouring him with an OBE last Saturday, Pierce Brosnan declined to be drawn on who he saw succeeding him in the secret agent role: “I have no idea who’s going to play the next Bond but I’m sure he’s waiting in the wings there, unknown but ready.”

As for how many more Bond films he would do, he all but ruled out going for the lucky record of seven set by Roger Moore, or the six by original Bond, Connery.

“Just one more for now,” he stated, which goes against what he’s previously been quoted as saying during the filming of the current Bond film Die Another Day.

  2. Brosnan 'Bowled Over' By Honour

    By @mrpauldunphy on 2003-07-19

“I’m sure I’m very humbled by an honour like this,” Pierce Brosnan said as he was made an honorary officer of the Order of the British Empire today.

Honorary OBEs are awarded on merit to non-British citizens who have made an important contribution to British interests.

As Her Majesty’s Not So Secret Servant, Brosnan has saved the world from annihilation several times over, but he said receiving the honor in his native Ireland, with his mother, stepfather, three children and granddaughter by his side, had touched him deeply.

“I’m completely bowled over by it, really,” he said after the medal was presented by Britain’s ambassador to Ireland, Stewart Eldon. He said he had been told about the OBE about four months ago and at first thought it was a friend pulling his leg, “but later I realised it was for real”.

Brosnan has made his fortune portraying the debonair and indestructible 007 in the most recent four of the 20 Bond films.

Acting achievements apart, Brosnan is currently campaign chairman for the Entertainment Industry Foundation and has been a leading figure in environmental protection efforts over the past decade. Two years ago, he was appointed a special patron for UNICEF Ireland.

  3. Campbell Not Available For Possible 2004 Shooting!

    By Tim Roth on 2003-07-17

Despite all rumours, "GoldenEye" director Martin Campbell won’t be available for a possible Bond 21 shooting in early 2004. As "Dark Horizons" reports today, "Antonio Banderas confirmed to The Associated Press that filming on the [Zorro] sequel will begin in February with the same writers & director onboard, but no word about Zeta-Jones yet."

The same director means that Martin Campbell, who directed "The Mask of Zorro" in 1998, will be onboard for the sequel. Insiders reported two weeks ago that Campbell was "close to signing the contract to Bond 21". Which can still be true, but if so it would confirm that Bond 21 will definately be shot in 2005.

Thanks to ‘level007’ for the alert, be sure to discuss the topic in this thread of CBn’s Bond 21 forums!

  7. Campion Bond flooded out of 'League'

    By Evan Willnow on 2003-07-08

In an interview with Comics2Film The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen producer Don Murphy reveals that the role of Campion Bond, an ancestor of James Bond, had to be removed from the film because of torrential flooding in Prague. The flooding destroyed many of the including the Nautilus submarine set. The destroyed sets forced changes in the movie including a change to the epilogue which was to feature Campion Bond and set up for the film’s sequel.

Though it was never revealed who was to play the role of Campion Bond, rumours said that the producers wished to cast Roger Moore or Jason Isaacs. Of course, Bond fans can still enjoy Sean Connery in the role of adventurer Allan Quartermain.

  8. Bond Artist Severs Last Link With Fleming

    By @mrpauldunphy on 2003-07-07

Richard Chopping, a well known figure in the art world of the 1950s and 60s is auctioning off his last printer’s proofs and an autographed first edition of Thunderball at Sotheby’s on Thursday, July 10th, 10:30am, saying he has “had enough of the whole thing.”

He was commissioned by Fleming to produce his famous series of designs for the Bond novels following an exhibition at the Hanover Galleries in 1956.

The artist Francis Bacon, exhibiting downstairs at the gallery, took his friend Ann Fleming, who reported back to Ian that “you ought to get (Chopping) to do your next book jacket.” Chopping was subsequently invited to the Flemings’ house in Victoria Square, where Fleming invited him to paint the cover of From Russia, With Love, and the partnership was born.

Chopping described Fleming as “charming, but horrid”, indicating that their partnership wasn’t exactly plain sailing, with the author laying down strict and sometimes impossible instructions as to what should be included, nevertheless, the jackets are some of the most celebrated of post-war British fiction.

Fleming himself described Chopping as the only English master’ in the art of the trompe l’œil technique. A French term literally meaning “trick the eye”, trompe l’œil is a style of painting which gives the appearance of three-dimensional, photographic realism.

In the cover for From Russia, With Love, Chopping pictured a sawn-off .38 Smith & Wesson revolver that belonged to Geoffrey Boothroyd, a gun expert who inspired the character of Q in the novels.

The painter is reported to be happy to let go of his last connection with Fleming, and to close the door on his part in creating the image of the world’s most famous fictional spy. He said “Mr Fleming was not a nice man to work for. He was mean. I have been swindled all along the line.”

Mr Chopping remains bitter that he was not paid a commission on the novels sold, and that the watercolour paintings he produced for ten successive Bond novels became the property of Fleming and have passed into private ownership.

“They would be worth a great deal of money now. They were passed into Fleming’s family when he died and then sold. I borrowed some of them for a retrospective exhibition in Aldeburgh, but I don’t even know who has got them now.”

Mr Chopping said the popularity of the distinctive book covers made it difficult for him to sell his work elsewhere as his style became associated with the million-selling books.

This is truly a sad end to a partnership that saw the production of memorable work, the covers of the Chopping editions are some of the most famous and celebrated pieces of Bond artwork in the world.

  10. Eon Deny Bond 21 Rumours

    By @mrpauldunphy on 2003-07-04

In an e-mail sent to the French James Bond Club earlier today, Eon Productions, the producers of the James Bond series, denied every rumour that filtered out throughout the course of the past week, saying:

“The rumors concerning an eventual return behind the camera for Martin Campbell as well as the shooting locations (South Africa, Liverpool, …) for the next film are false and without foundation.”

In the message received today, Eon Productions specifies equally that no script has been written and casting is not in course.

In the past, Eon are known to deny any rumours that surface until an official press release is issued, even if the rumours are true. Most notably back in 1998, when the fan community reported that the title of Bond 19 was going to be The World Is Not Enough, Eon claimed that it was untrue, however, what was supposedly conjecture turned out to be fact, and the title turned out to be the one previously denied.

As ever, you can discuss this topic in this thread of the CBn Forums, and CBn will keep you updated first regarding new developments in the Bond 21 saga.
