As production continues on the 21st James Bond film, Casino Royale, the official website has been updated with a new video.

The video, ‘Directing Bond,’ covers the massive amounts of work that Martin Campbell, director of Casino Royale, must put into the film. It features small interviews with Michael G. Wilson, Daniel Craig, Eva Green, Dame Judi Dench, and Martin Campbell himself. Also included are scenes from the film such as the poker table, Vesper Lynd and Bond kissing, and even a blooper from Dame Judi.

‘We’re in the middle of the film…the trouble with being in the middle area of the film is that you’re not really far enough along to see the end in sight. It’s a time where stamina counts and Martin [Campbell] has plenty of it…’ says producer Michael G. Wilson. The video can be accessed at the official website, click on the left card on the main menu and then ‘Video.’

The official Casino Royale website blog has been updated by ‘Yarborough.’ Coverage this time centers on Sebastien Foucan, who is to play Mollaka in Casino Royale.

‘Founder of Parkour, with his childhood friend David Belle, Sebastien Foucan developed the discipline (also known as Free-running) to combat negative energy. He has created and given names to many of the trademark Parkour moves, now used throughout the movement, which is becoming increasingly well-known and respected as an extreme sport world-wide. However, for Foucan, Parkour is not a sport, it is primarily an art form…’ runs a cast biography of Foucan on the official website. He plays Mollaka in the latest 007 film, a villain in some of the early chase scenes of the film.

‘For me, my discipline is about adapting yourself and to be an actor, it’s exactly the same thing – you just have to play something…’ says Foucan about working on the massive film. Read the entire report here on the official James Bond website.

  3. Charlie Higson's James Bond Formula

    By Devin Zydel on 2006-07-24

The Young Bond Dossier reports on a new interview (on the official website) with Young Bond author Charlie Higson. Higson describes his formula for creating a winning James Bond novel. The interview follows:

Before writing these books I re-read all of Fleming’s Bond books to try and soak up some of his genius. I didn’t try to write in his style, though, which would be impossible. I did try and make my books similar – the plots, the characters, the type of situation that Bond gets into are all based on the original books.

The basic elements of a great Fleming Bond book are as follows…

1 – M gives a mission to Bond. (As Young Bond isn’t a spy, this part is obviously different in my books – but they do start with Bond finding out about problem that needs to be solved).

2 – The villain show himself and Bond meets him.

3 – Bond upsets the villain’s plans in some way – or the villain upsets Bond’s plans.

4 – The girl shows herself.

5 – Bond gets close to the villain.

6 – The villain captures Bond (he sometimes captures the girl as well).

    7 – Villain tortures Bond.

8 – Bond beats the villain and his henchmen.

9 – Bond recovers from his injuries and gets friendly with the girl, then loses her.

I try to stick roughly to this plan.

In discussing the all-important role of the villain in the Bond formula, the author had this to say:

A good villain needs to stick in the mind, be creepy and scary and be very nasty. And there needs to be a reason why they are doing what they are doing, they can’t just doing be evil for the sake of it.

Ian Fleming created the best villains – Goldfinger, Blofeld, Dr No, Red Grant, Rosa Klebb, Irma Bunt… As I said before I try to keep to the style of Fleming, so my villains are similar to his.

In Fleming’s books, the villains are all older than Bond and tend to be rich and powerful. They are all in a way like father figures, or evil headmasters if you like. [Ed note: Yes! Mr. Higson gets this in a way that, in recent years, the Bond film-makers have repeatedly fumbled, making their villains Bond’s age and even younger!] People who should be well behaved and are well respected, but who are secretly hatching terrible plots. Fleming partly based his villains on real people – like Mussolini, or the Satanist, Alistair Crowley. The hardest thing is coming up with what the villains look like, and making them memorable without going down the clichéd route of having them badly scarred, or with claws for hands – although in the end you do have to do a bit of this, otherwise the villains all look the same and don’t stick in the mind. I made Lord Hellebore extremely handsome. Ugo is very pale, almost like a vampire.

The villain in the third book is English for a change.

  7. Well-Known Writer Selected For Centenary Novel

    By righty007 on 2006-07-21

Today, Ian Fleming Publications Limited announced that they “have commissioned a very well-known and highly respected author to write a new James Bond novel.” The publisher has not yet been chosen and the identity of the author will be a closely guarded secret until publication.

BRAND NEW BOND NOVEL TO MARK THE IAN FLEMING CENTENARY IN MAY 2008

Ian Fleming Publications Ltd have commissioned a very well-known and highly respected author to write a new James Bond novel. The launch of the new book, which promises to be a major publishing event, will mark the centenary of Ian Fleming’s birth in May 2008.

Corinne Turner of Ian Fleming Publications Ltd comments, “We are delighted to have secured this particular author who we have had in mind for some time now. He is the perfect writer for this project and we are greatly looking forward to his take on James Bond, in what we are convinced will be a stunning novel.”

A publisher has not yet been sought and the identity of the author will be a closely guarded secret until publication.

Ian Fleming, whose one hundredth birthday will be celebrated on the 28th May 2008, gained worldwide acclaim for his most famous literary creation – the suave but deadly British secret agent, James Bond.

The Bond novels are, however, just one aspect of a fascinating life that combined the flamboyant elements of 007 with a unique creativity. Fleming was not only a novelist, but also a journalist, sportsman, naval commander, traveller, intelligence officer and bon-viveur.

2008 will be dedicated to a broad range of events and publications designed to celebrate the life of this literary legend and to examine his legacy. The programme includes a major exhibition featuring never-before-seen material. Further events will reflect Fleming’s passions and experiences in the worlds of art, literature, journalism, sport, motoring and travel.

Corinne Turner adds, “The Ian Fleming Centenary presents an exciting opportunity to celebrate an extraordinary life. Our centenary plans are well underway and we are sure that there are more possibilities still to be explored.”

Official Press Release from IAN FLEMING PUBLICATIONS LTD

Eon Productions’ Bond 22 and Charlie Higson’s Young Bond Book 4 will also be released in 2008.

  8. James Bond Will Return in 2008

    By righty007 on 2006-07-21

Today, Eon Productions, MGM and Sony Pictures Entertainment announced that Bond 22 will be released on 2 May 2008. This announcement shuts down the rumour of a 2007 release which would not only have been a great year to market a 007 film but it would have also celebrated the 45th anniversary of the first James Bond film produced by Eon Productions, Dr. No.

COLUMBIA PICTURES AND MGM ANNOUNCE MAY 2, 2008 RELEASE DATE FOR 22ND JAMES BOND ADVENTURE STARRING DANIEL CRAIG

CULVER CITY, Calif., July 20 /PRNewswire/ — It was announced today by producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Inc. and Sony Pictures Entertainment, that the 22nd James Bond adventure will be released by Columbia Pictures on May 2, 2008 with Daniel Craig reprising the role of the legendary British secret agent.

The story for the latest James Bond film produced by the franchise holders, EON Productions has yet to be announced. “As we wrap production on CASINO ROYALE we couldn’t be more excited about the direction the franchise is heading with Daniel Craig. Daniel has taken the origins of Ian Fleming’s James Bond portraying, with emotional complexity, a darker and edgier 007,” said Wilson and Broccoli.

Official Press Release from EON PRODUCTIONS LTD, MGM and SONY

This announcement is not the only Bond 22 news this month. A few days ago, CBn reported that Roger Michell is in negotiations to direct the follow-up to Casino Royale. There is also a rumour in the Superhero Hype! forums that the working title for Bond 22 is Risico which is the title of a short story in Ian Fleming’s For Your Eyes Only.

  9. 'Bond 22': Roger Michell To Direct?

    By Tim Roth on 2006-07-17
    Roger Michell

    Roger Michell

    Following the recent insider
    report
that Martin Campbell won’t return to direct Daniel Craig’s second
    outing as James Bond, today’s

    Hollywood Reporter
says that "U.K.-based helmer Roger Michell is in
negotiations to direct the follow-up to Casino Royale which has a working title
    of Bond 22".

According to the trade paper, Neil Purvis and Robert Wade, who penned the
last three James Bond movies, are not going to return for Bond 22 either.
Instead, suggests the "Hollywood Reporter", "sources say the film is based on an
original idea from Bond producer Michael Wilson." This would be the first
writing involvement of Wilson since 1989’s License To Kill. Together with
Richard Maibaum, Michael Wilson wrote all of the 1980s Bond movies,
starting with For Your Eyes Only in 1981.

The news of Eon Productions looking for a new writer to adapt Wilson’s ideas, is contrary to former statements by
the producers. At the opening press conference for Casino Royale, Wilson was
quoted to have said that “Purvis and Wade, who wrote the script are also
starting on the next Bond script, so all this is going forward”.

Michell and Craig are no strangers, having teamed on the 2004 drama Enduring
    Love
. Michell’s helming credits also include the Ben Affleck-Samuel L. Jackson
vehicle Changing Lanes and the Julia Roberts – Hugh Grant romantic comedy hit
Notting Hill. He has first been rumoured to direct Bond 22 in May 2006.
