  5. Sir Sean Connery To Unveil 'Being A Scot' At Edinburgh Book Festival

    By Devin Zydel on 2008-06-12

Sir Sean Connery’s forthcoming autobiography/memoirs, Being A Scot will be launched at the Edinburgh Book Festival this August to coincide with the actor’s 78th birthday.

MSN reports that the public will get their first glimpse inside the book on 25 August, Connery’s birthday.

As previously reported on CommanderBond.net, Being A Scot mixes a ‘frank account of Connery’s life with an esoteric take on Scotland’s history and culture’. The 312-page long book will feature more than 400 photograghs from his personal collection.

Included are details on his childhood in a gaslit Fountainbridge tenement, learning golf from co-star Gert Frobe during the shooting of the third James Bond film, Goldfinger, and weekending with Billy Connolly, ‘the funniest man alive’.

‘This book has gone through more permutations than James Bond has had shaken not stirred martinis–different co-writers, different publishers,’ festival director Catherine Lockerbie said.

She said the memoir, co-written by Scottish filmmaker Murray Grigor, would share Connery’s views on ‘many aspects of Scottish culture and life, including sport, architecture and, of course, the gothic tendency in Scots literature.’

Lockerbie added that other 007-themed events would also feature at the festival as a way to commemorate the centenary of Bond creator Ian Fleming.

This year’s Edinburgh Book Festival runs from 9-25 August.

Being A Scot can currently be pre-ordered online:

  7. Small Fire Causes Minor Damage To Bond Set At Pinewood Studios

    By Devin Zydel on 2008-06-11

A small fire broke out in the early morning this past Friday at Pinewood Studios.

The Maidenhead Advertiser reports that the fire broke out on one of the external sets being used for the Quantum of Solace production.

Unlike the disastrous fire that destroyed the ‘007 Stage’ at Pinewood in July of 2006, however, this was a much smaller incident that was swifty dealt with by local firefighters.

Andrew Smith, group director of corporate affairs, said: ‘There was a small fire on one of the external sets of a production in the early hours of this morning. I am pleased to say that no-one was harmed and the systems we have in place meant we were able to detect and respond to the incident rapidly and effectively.’

‘Our thanks go to the fire service and our home team for handling the situation so well.’

News websites are reporting that the ‘James Bond curse’ hovering over the Quantum of Solace production has struck yet again.

According to a report from the Telegraph, Daniel Craig was rushed to the hospital from Pinewood Studios earlier today after cutting off the tip of his finger during an action sequence on the 22nd Bond film.

An unnamed member of the 007 production team said: ‘There was quite a lot of blood and it was decided he needed to leave the set and see a doctor.’

‘Some people are beginning to think the film is jinxed. During filming in Panama, Daniel injured his ribs. And a technician was stabbed in Austria by a woman he met in a bar’.

‘In Italy a stuntman crashed an Alfa Romeo and a mechanic drove an Aston Martin into a lake. Just last weekend a fire damaged some sets at Pinewood.’

Craig was able to return to the Bond set later in the day to continue film. A spokesperson for Eon Productions said he was taken to the hospital only as ‘a precaution’.

  9. 'Quantum of Solace' – Official Blog Report #12

    By Devin Zydel on 2008-06-10

The official Quantum of Solace blog has been updated today with another crew member from the 22nd James Bond 007 film: hair & make-up designer Naomi Donne.

‘I’m designing the hair and make-up for the Bond girls,’ says Donne on location in Panama.

‘With Gemma [Arterton], I wanted to have a sense of sort of a throwback, retro feel of how the Bond girls once were, but then giving it a very edgy look. A contemporary, edgy look, but an echo of what the Bond’s were in the 60’s and 70’s.’

‘With Olga [Kurylenko], we wanted to exaggerate the colour of her skin and bring it out to give her real South American look. We really wanted her to look very really; not done-up.’

Click on the video link above for more from Donne on how make-up affects the final appearance of a Bond film as well as several scenes from Quantum of Solace, including Camille and Dominic Greene.
