  1. Activision Mixes 'Casino' With 'Quantum'

    By Matt Weston on 2008-07-03

Team Xbox recently visited Treyarch headquarters and has posted an excellent interview with Garrett Young, executive producer of Activision’s Quantum of Solace.

Young said the game will involve roughly equal portions of story from the films Casino Royale and the upcoming Quantum of Solace. Intriguingly, Activision has taken a neat bit of creative licensing in adapting the two movies into a single video game.

“We are being a little creative with [the order of the missions],” Young said. “And the movie guys were fine with that.”

“We kick off the game with the same thing the movie [Quantum of Solace] does. And then we get to a certain point in our story when there’s a tie-in to a character – we had to actually bring the character forward from Casino Royale; he’s not in Quantum of Solace but we put him in and the movie guys were okay with it – and after you have an interaction with this character, it kicks off a flashback to a section of Casino Royale.”

Young continued: “From there you play through the Casino Royale story before flashing forward to Quantum of Solace. So we’re telling it that way instead rather than a linear path story because we wanted to make it a little more interesting and wanted to tie it in a little closer to what people have seen, even if it was two and a half years ago.”

Young also spoke at length about the process of working with Quantum of Solace‘s filmmakers. “It’s all about having a great relationship with the movie people and the fact that we’ve been on the set three or four times and they’ve given us thousands of photos and we got scripts and updates to the scripts and sometimes that causes problems for us because they keep updating the scripts and so we have to make changes.”

“But when we did get to show Daniel Craig (and the Broccoli family, the long time producers of the Bond movies) the game, we went to Pinewood Studios where they film the movies. So we’re setting up in their conference room and the production assistant on the movie is running around saying ‘He’s shooting a scene right now and I can let you come out and see the scene, but I don’t know if he can come look at the game yet and have you show it to him.’ So we watch them film the scene and then the assistant came back and said ‘OK, I got a hold of him in his trailer between scenes but he was playing some game with a plastic guitar.’ He was playing Guitar Hero! He’s between scenes in his trailer playing Guitar Hero? That’s crazy!”

“And then we came to see the game, and see himself depicted for the first time in a video game, I think he was a little bit nervous; a little bit anxious. He picked a controller right up and picked up on the first person controls almost immediately, though he was getting killed at lot at first until I explained the cover system to him. But when I first met him I think he was a little – I mean, he’s a big gamer. And he was asking us a lot of stuff about what’s in the game, the kind of stuff you would ask if you were a gamer. But I think he liked how he looked, and we’ve gotten more feedback from him after sending him screenshots. But he’d never been in a game before and I’m thinking ‘Dude, you’re in movies all the time, and video games are just another medium like a movie’. But I think because he’s a gamer he was a little apprehensive about whether he was going to look like crap. But thankfully he really liked it.”

“Getting to meet all the actors was cool, they’re really nice people. Daniel and Judi [Dench] and some of the other principles from both movies are really, really nice. And yes, those Bond girls really are that beautiful in real life. Not that many of them have been in video games before. Judi has of course and she was an old pro when it came to recording her voice-overs. She read it once and I was like ‘Oh, that’s M’.”

  3. 'My Name's Bond, James Bond': An Ian Fleming Anthology

    By Devin Zydel on 2008-07-03

A brand new edition of ‘My Name’s Bond, James Bond’: An Ian Fleming Anthology by Simon Winder is slated for release in October 2008.

Originally released in 2000 in the UK and US and then reprinted once more the following year, ‘My Name’s Bond, James Bond’ is a celebration of ‘the greatest of all postwar British fictional icons’.

Literary 007 fans may also recall Winder’s other more recent Bond book, The Man Who Saved Britain: A Personal Journey into the Disturbing World of James Bond. Click here for the CommanderBond.net interview covering that release.

The new edition of ‘My Name’s Bond, James Bond’: An Ian Fleming Anthology will be published by Penguin Classics and retail for £6.99. It will be released in paperback on 30 October in the UK.

The original blurb for ‘My Name’s Bond, James Bond’: An Ian Fleming Anthology follows:

This book celebrates the greatest of all postwar British fictional icons. For too long the Bond films have overshadowed their literary source – the bizarre, baroque world of Ian Fleming. Full rein is given in this anthology to Fleming’s wonderful creations – the deranged villains, their horrifying associates and their surreal lairs; from Dr. No’s guano island to Blofeld’s Garden of Death. Full attention to is paid to the girls, cars, food, drink and cigarettes consumed by the books’ brutal, resourceful hero. From the first Bond novel, Casino Royale to the last to be fully finished, You Only Live Twice, there is an extraordinary zest and ingenuity to Fleming’s imagination and My Name’s Bond… allows readers to see perhaps as never before the author’s remarkable abilities. He was, above all, a creator of great set pieces and it is these that are surely at the root of the films’ great and lasting success.

  4. Ian Fleming's 'Quantum of Solace' Coming In October 2008

    By Devin Zydel on 2008-07-02

Yet another upcoming literary 007 release to add to the checklist.

Coming on 30 October 2008 is Ian Fleming’s Quantum of Solace from Penguin Modern Classics in the UK.

    Ian Fleming

    Ian Fleming

While no official blurb has been released, it is a fairly safe bet that this will be almost identical to the recently released Quantum of Solace: The Complete James Bond Short Stories, considering both of these run at 304 pages (Quantum of Solace: The Complete James Bond Short Stories collects together the nine short stories that make up the For Your Eyes Only and Octopussy & The Living Daylights collections).

It’s likely that this upcoming Quantum of Solace release will feature tie-in artwork to the James Bond film of the same name considering it is being released one day before the UK theatrical release.

Quantum of Solace will be available in hardback and paperback, retailing for £20.00 and £6.99, respectively.

  5. Signed And Numbered Limited Edition Of Charlie Higson's 'By Royal Command'

    By Devin Zydel on 2008-07-02

News has emerged today on another special edition of a James Bond book coming later this year (because there obviously haven’t been enough literary 007 releases so far for collectors!).

The Young Bond Dossier reports on a listing for a signed and numbered limited edition of Charlie Higson’s fifth Young Bond novel, By Royal Command.

While details remain scarce as publisher Puffin Books has yet to confirm the special edition Young Bond novel, it is currently planned for release alongside the UK hardback edition in early September 2008.

Special editions have appeared for all four of the previous Young Bond novels in the past.

CommanderBond.net will keep you updated as more details come to light. By Royal Command is officially released on 4 September.

  6. Inside Look At Activision's 'Quantum of Solace'

    By Devin Zydel on 2008-07-01

A new demo version of Activision’s debut James Bond game, Quantum of Solace, has been circulated and IGN has gotten an inside look at what to expect.

As earlier reported on CommanderBond.net, the game will be comprised of the events that take place in both the Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace films. The IGN report adds that a sequence cut from the Casino Royale film has been restored for the game.

While developed on an engine for a first-person shooter game, some differences have been made so Quantum of Solace can also be called a hybrid third-person game. Such examples include the camera pulling out to third-person perspective when Bond pushes against a wall or climbs up a ladder.

Areas from the game featured in the demo were mostly apart of the Casino Royale section and included the tension-filled sinking house in Venice, a level where 007 is faced with the task of locating the villainous Le Chiffre in the casino, and lastly the action-packed construction chase in which the ever-changing perspectives ‘gave a great view of the surroundings which showcased the great draw distance and attention to detail’ in the sequence.

The report also confirms that Daniel Craig is providing his own likeness and voice to character of James Bond. Developed Treyarch has ‘thousands of reference photos to work from in addition to the scripts’ to provide similar treatment to the other main characters in the game.

Placing the importance on perfecting the gameplay rather than including everything, Treyarch explained to IGN that there will be no driving levels and no poker game to take part in. They did confirm that multiplayer would be featured, but wouldn’t go into extensive details yet.

The overall verdict from IGN? ‘Licensed movie games rarely get the attention they deserve, but that doesn’t appear to be the case with Quantum of Solace. Treyarch has taken the Call of Duty 4 engine and made it its own by adding third-person action and delivering a cinematic feel fitting of an agent with a licence to kill.’

Visit IGN for the full report and several screenshots from the Quantum of Solace game.

Furthermore, the official website for the game, 007thevideogame.com, has been updated with new details. A general overview, details on the weapons, concept artwork and more are all worth checking out.

Quantum of Solace is being developed by Eurocom, Treyarch, Beenox and Vicarious Visions and will be released on next-generation consoles, Windows PC and hand-held platforms. It is expected to be released in November 2008.

  9. 'I had to set my own visual tone for "Quantum of Solace".'

    By Devin Zydel on 2008-07-01
    Director Marc Forster

    Director Marc Forster

Quantum of Solace director Marc Forster spoke with Moviefone about his vision for the 22nd James Bond film and how it differs from what we’ve seen before.

‘You take on Bond, and you work within that framework of Bond,’ said Forster. ‘You know, you have the girls, the cars, the history, the millions of fans. Casino Royale has been such a huge success, and audiences always have higher expectations. So there is incredible pressure you are under because you have to create something as a follow-up to Casino Royale. And that sort of pressure excited me.’

‘At the same time, I always love[d] the early ‘Bond’ films, like the 1960s Sean Connery, Ken Adam-designed Bond films, which I felt were so much ahead of their time in feel and look and design. And I felt like when you got to Quantum of Solace there would be this incredible opportunity I had been given to really create something stylish and interesting and push further than where Casino went.’

Although Quantum of Solace picks up roughly 30 minutes after the events of Casino Royale, Forster was keen to point out that this film won’t be a carbon copy of Daniel Craig’s debut as 007.

    Daniel Craig is James Bond

    Daniel Craig is James Bond

He said: ‘I had to set my own tone and own visual tone for Quantum of Solace. So I didn’t want to get too married to it because I felt like I still have to put my stamp on it and visualize it the way I feel it should be right to the character. And also, the movie starts where the last one ended. And I feel Bond is in a very different place now because it’s the first time he experienced love and he lost someone. And now we take off from this point where he experienced that loss. And what really does it mean for Bond also to lose someone as he himself takes other people’s lives? And it makes him psychologically more vulnerable, and out of that vulnerability the main theme, the center of the film, for me was trust. What can you trust? And what does trust really mean if you love someone?’

When questioned about the supposed curse hanging over the Bond production, Forster shrugged it off. ‘On every action film, small accidents happen. And really the greatest news is obviously that Harris, the stunt guy, is out of the hospital. He’s walking, talking. He really will get back to normal. That’s just incredible news. And then the little things like with the finger and stuff, that’s just gonna happen, you know. So I’m not really buying into it because I feel the movie we did is really special and the main things are I’m feeling very positive about it.’
