  2. Sir Roger Moore Launches UNICEF Campaign In Dublin

    By Devin Zydel on 2009-01-16

Even at the age of 81, there’s just no stopping Sir Roger Moore.

The Irish Independent reports that the former James Bond star was in Dublin, Ireland yesterday to launch a brand new UNICEF fundraising campaign.

The initiative involves customers of the petrol station chain Topaz being asked to donate two cents on every purchase they make. According to UNICEF, every donation will fund the purification of 10 litres of water in the third world.

‘Irish people have well deserved reputation for generosity down through the years–and not just in the good times,’ said Sir Roger, who is a goodwill ambassador for UNICEF. ‘By supporting this initiative, people will be able to help UNICEF save children’s lives and make the world a better place for children.’

UNICEF director Melanie Verwoerd said the campaign could make a ‘phenomenal difference’.

‘If we have a good buy in from the Irish public, we estimate that we can make more than € 1 million,” she told the Irish Independent. ‘We are very privileged to have Roger Moore here to launch this for us. Somebody with his passion, his stature, his love for children and his commitment to the developing world.’

‘It’s an absolute delight to have somebody like him come and endorse the campaign for us,’ said Topaz chairman Neil O’Leary, and added that he was confident that ‘very substantial sums’ could be raised for the charity through the two cent donations.

Sir Roger will be honoured at a black tie gala dinner in the Burlington Hotel tonight and he will also attend a My Word is My Bond book signing at Easons on O’Connell Street tomorrow at 2:00pm.

  6. Paul McCartney Selects Duffy For 'Live And Let Die' Cover

    By Devin Zydel on 2009-01-14

Her name first crept up as a possible contender for the Quantum of Solace title theme and now she’s back in the news again–this time because of a song James Bond fans have likely heard endless times.

Wales Online reports that the popular Welsh solo artist has been hand-picked by Paul McCartney to perform a cover of his 1973 hit Bond theme, ‘Live and Let Die’.

The song will be featured on an upcoming Heroes album in aid of the War Child charity. The concept behind the album involved some of pop and rock’s biggest songwriters, including Bob Dylan and U2, picking one of their own hits and nominating a favourite modern act to rework the song.

Said Sir Paul: ‘I think Duffy’s version of Live and Let Die is great–I was really impressed.’

Ben Knowles, music director of the charity and executive producer on the album, said the first person they approached for the album was Sir Paul McCartney who quickly responded with his nomination. ‘Sir Paul chose Duffy last spring before her rise to fame,’ he stated. ‘They met on her first appearance on Later with Jools Holland and he knew she was going to be a star.’

He continued: ‘Duffy has done a really stripped bare, northern soul version of the Bond theme song. It’s not just an exact replica of the song but her own personal interpretation of it and she has done a really brave reworking of one of the most played and instantly recognisable songs ever. I would be very surprised if this is the last Bond song she sings.’

Knowles also weighed in on the comparisons between Duffy and another instantly recognizable 007 theme performer, Dame Shirley Bassey. ‘Wales has an incredible track record of doing Bond themes and here you have two powerful and individual Welsh voices doing a Bond song–you can’t help but compare both artists.’

I also think the album will bring different generations together–I can imagine children arguing with their parents about who sings Bond theme songs the best–Dame Shirley or Duffy.’

Lyn Davies, head of vocal studies at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama, was a fan of Sir Paul’s choice. ‘Duffy has her own kind of style and she will lend the song a totally different style from what’s been done before,’ she said.

‘She has a unique voice that also harks back to previous eras. Sir Paul will have spotted her potential to create something new from his classic song–new wine in old bottles, if you like. She’s one in a very long line of Welsh vocalists in every field of vocal endeavour that is doing well and that’s great news.’

Jessica Morgan, managing director of Cardiff’s Space recording studios, also voiced her praise for the selection, stating: ‘Despite being a very demanding song to sing, Duffy has the guts in her voice to carry off Live and Let Die.’

Heroes, the fifth War Child album, which raises money to help children affected by conflict, was recorded over six months in studios in London, Manchester, Paris, Berlin, New York and Los Angeles and was mastered at Abbey Road studios in London. It is due for release on 16 February.

    Mission 9: Miami Airport

'Quantum of Solace' Game Box Art

    Quantum of Solace

Enemies have infiltrated the security centers of Miami Airport with a computer virus, so it’s your job to head in and set things right. Begin the mission off by heading down to the security room near the patrolling guard. Take him out, head inside that room and patch into the cameras.

Then head past the office cubicles towards the Administrative offices. Be careful not to be spotted by a camera up ahead–instead, crouch down and slip across behind it to where you’ll see a control box that allows you to disable it. Stay hidden in that corner by the camera and wait for a patrolling guard to pass by. Take him out quickly when he starts to walk away from your position. Look out for a second camera up ahead and do the same crouch routine as before to knock out this one via the control box located to the right.

Hack the locked door towards the left of this camera to enter the server room. After hacking the computer to upload your files, the doors in the room will open and an enemy security team will be despatched to deal with you. Quickly head out into the hallway and take cover. Take out all of the approaching enemies and then proceed forward to hack the next server room up ahead.

Once this is done with, head for the third and main server room. There are two cameras up ahead and several guards, so be wary. The control box to the first one is towards the left, but watch out for a patrolling guard before heading over to it. Also, be sure not to take out any of the guards while they are in view of the security cameras–this will alert an enemy security team to your presence. Once you reach the second camera, wait for it to turn away and then quickly take out the guard there with a takedown and disable that camera via the control box.

Once you’re in the main server room, hack the server to further combat the enemy virus. Unfortunately, an enemy team is alerted to your whereabouts, so prepare for a firefight. Take what cover you can as you deal with the several guards the enter the center of the room (and watch out for the spare few that will try to flank you). One particularly helpful tactic is firing at the red canisters on the ceiling to trigger a gas release that momentarilly stuns nearby enemies, making them easier to fire at.

    'Quantum of Solace'

    Quantum of Solace

After all of these guards are finally taken care out, exit to the garage via the door marked Maintenance. Ascend the stairs, taking out the guard positioned up there (which overlooks the luggage area) and enter the second office to the right to pick up a D.A.D. System. Once you’ve done this, head over to the windows and take out as many enemies from above as possible–this is much easier than dealing with them on a level playing field.

Once this set of enemies is taken care of, head down to the lower floor and prepare for a firefight in the luggage area. There are several enemies to deal with, so stay under cover as much as possible in the corner of the room until you’re certain that no one is remaining. Take the ramp on the right side of the room and jump over the fence via the stacked crates next to it to proceed forward.

Take cover immediately upon reaching the next section. You should be able to take out the enemies on your level from your current position. There are explosives to fire at near the second catwalk, so that should help you somewhat. After, walk towards the outside loading bay … but the door closes before you reach it … so climb the ladder to your left. This next section is the sight of yet another firefight. Again take cover and eliminate the enemies on the catwalks on your level (and any others below you can spot). Then head down and take out the rest on this level, staying under cover as much as possible and being wary of those that may try to flank you.

When everyone here is finally taken out, head over to the garage doors and activate the switch. Your final battle is against Carlos as he attempts to blow up the plane. He’ll move left each time to get closer to his target. Lead him and take him out as quickly as possible to complete the objective. Mission Complete.

When MOORE Bond Was Good Bond

Few fictional characters have earned such a lasting role in popular culture as the super secret agent James Bond, who first appeared in the novels and short stories of Ian Fleming but took on a life of his own on screen when first played in 1962 by Sean Connery.

The recent hubbub over Daniel Craig’s “new” – and blond-haired – Bond is testament to the character’s enduring appeal. But the first and most intense controversy over the Bond series came when Connery grew tired of the role and was replaced by Roger Moore, who had become famous as television’s The Saint. The super spy himself never faced a greater challenge than Moore did in taking over a character that was so closely associated with another actor.

Connery’s die-hard fans still complain that Moore wasn’t as good. But the fact is that Moore made seven Bond films to Connery’s six (not counting the “unofficial” Never Say Never Again). And Moore stayed in the role for 13 years to Connery’s nine, all the while maintaining the franchise’s popularity.

Ticket pricing is as follows: General Admission ($6.00) / Seniors & Children 12 and younger ($4.00). Special Double Feature Pricing: General Admission ($8.00) / Seniors & Children 12 and younger ($6.00).

The Landmark Theatre is located at 54 Journal Square, Jersey City, New Jersey 07306.
