  1. Activision Pushes James Bond Racing Game To 2010

    By Devin Zydel on 2009-02-11

Bad news today for James Bond gamers.

TeamXbox reports that Activision Inc. has delayed the release of its follow-up James Bond game to 2010.

The follow-up to Quantum of Solace, which is being pegged as an original racing 007 game, was originally planned for a September 2009 release. However, Activision revealed that it wanted to put some space between this game and the release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (which is slated for a late-2009 release).

The company stated that sales of Quantum of Solace were affected by the launch of Call of Duty: World at War, hence their reason for spacing things out this time around.

  2. Christopher Lee Talks Bond And Beyond

    By Devin Zydel on 2009-02-11

With the James Bond HD season kicking off on Sky Movies, IGN recently had the chance to sit down with actor Christopher Lee to discuss the many villainous characters he has portrayed throughout his career.

In addition to being a cousin of 007 creator Ian Fleming, Lee also acted opposite Roger Moore in 1974’s The Man with the Golden Gun as lead villain Francisco Scaramanga. Before this however, he mentions that Fleming had thought him suitable for the role of Dr. No.

    Christopher Lee

    Christopher Lee

Lee states: ‘Most of the time I saw Ian on the golf course at Royal St George’s in Sandwich, Kent, which he immortalised in Goldfinger. I said congratulations on your book Casino Royale and he said: “I’ve written another one: Dr. No, have you read it?” And I said “Yes. Great characters. Wonderful.” Dr. No was this immensely tall Chinese man with contact lenses which he taps with his steel claws. Ian said, “Well, you’ve played Chinese haven’t you? You are very tall and of course you’ll have to be taller, but would you be interested in playing Dr. No?” I said “My god, I certainly would.” He said he’d talk to the producers. And he did, but too late. By the time he got around to talking to Cubby Broccoli and Harry Saltzman they’d already cast Joseph Wiseman, a very fine actor who is, as far as I know, still alive.’

Flash forward about 10 years and Lee, who had made a very successful career portraying various iconic villains, including Count Dracula, was finally given the opportunity to add Bond villain to his resume.

‘I got a call from Guy Hamilton, whom I’d known for many years, inviting me to lunch at The White Elephant, a showbiz restaurant in Curzon Street,’ Lee said. ‘I had no idea he was going to make The Man with the Golden Gun. He said, “I’m going to give you a script for a James Bond movie”. I thought, “Oh, at last”. He continued: “We’d like you to play Scaramanga”. And I said: “Wasn’t this man a West Indian and kind of a thug? A brute who went around bars where there were caged birds blowing them apart and things like that?” To which he replied: “No, he’s not like that at all. Read the script. It’s much more interesting.” And I did! The answer is of course I liked it very much.

'The Man with the Golden Gun'

The Man with the Golden Gun

Like several of the villains featured in Fleming’s 007 novels, the character of Scaramanga was in fact based on an fellow student at Eton. Lee explains: ‘There was a real Scaramanga. It’s a real name. He was at Eton with Ian who disliked him intensely, so of course, he made him the heavy.’

‘[The character I play] is a great improvement on the character in the book. He’s attractive to women. He has a sense of humour. He’s the dark side of Bond and yet he could be amusing. He was almost like a child in some ways. The way he shoots the cork out of the Champagne bottle, “Aha, this toy!”

To many Bond fans, probably the most famous location featured in The Man with the Golden Gun was the tiny Phuket island, or ‘James Bond Island’, a southern province of Thailand.

Discussing the filming conditions here, Lee said: ‘We weren’t allowed to take wives or anything like that. There was only one woman on the production, the continuity lady. It was pretty primitive to say the least. A very small village which they tried to do up with polished granite floors and so on. Phuket was nothing in those days.’

He continues: ‘Now it’s like Miami. I went back to the island with my wife and it’s covered with stalls and people selling souvenirs. You could hardly see the sand. I was pointing things out to her when a tourist suddenly said: “Aren’t you?”. And I said “No, no, no, I’ve never been here before,” and fled. Otherwise I’d probably still be there signing autographs.’

Head over to IGN for the complete interview, including details on working alongside Hervé Villechaize (Nick Nack) as well as whether or not he’ll resprise his role as Saruman for the forthcoming The Hobbit.

  3. Sir Sean Connery's 'Being A Scot' Paperback Cover Artwork Revealed

    By Devin Zydel on 2009-02-10

Cover artwork for the forthcoming paperback edition of Sir Sean Connery’s book, Being A Scot, has been revealed online.

Originally released last August to mark the James Bond actor’s 78th birthday, Being A Scot mixes a ‘frank account of Connery’s life with an esoteric take on Scotland’s history and culture’. The 312-page long book features more than 400 photograghs from his personal collection and is co-written with Scottish filmmaker Murray Grigor.

The paperback edition of Being A Scot will be published by Phoenix and will retail for £12.99. Due for release on 6 August 2009, it can currently be pre-ordered online from Amazon.co.uk (pre-order links follow below).

Sir Sean Connery's 'Being A Scot'

Sir Sean Connery’s Being A Scot

“My first big break came when I was five years old. It’s taken me more than seventy years to realise that. You see, at five I first learnt to read. It’s that simple and it’s that profound. I left school at thirteen. I didn’t have a formal education… It has been a long return journey from my two-room Fountainbridge home in the smoky industrial end of Edinburgh opposite the McCowans’ toffee factory. There was no bathroom with a communal toilet outside. For years we had only gas lighting. Sometimes the light in the shared stairway would be out after some desperado had broken the mantle to bubble gas through milk for kicks.” Although he is an indubitably international superstar, Sir Sean Connery still knows the city of Edinburgh practically street by street from delivering the morning milk as a schoolboy. His round included Fettes College, where Ian Fleming had sent his fictional James Bond after he was expelled from Eton. Being A Scot is a vivid and highly personal portrait of Scotland and its achievements, which is self-revelatory whilst full of Sir Sean’s desire to shine light upon Scottish success and heroic failure. His personal quest with his friend and co-writer Murray Grigor has been to seek answers to some perplexing questions.

How did Scots come to devise so many new sports and games, or raise others to new heights? What gave fire to the Gothic tendency in Scottish literature? Why have so many creatively inventive and influential architects been Scots? Where did Scotland’s unreal blend of psychotic humour originate? And what about the national tradition of self-deprecation sometimes called the Scottish cringe? Sean Connery offers a correction to misconceptions that many believe are part of the historical record whilst revealing as never before his own vibrant personal history.

  5. Corgi Regains James Bond Licence

    By Devin Zydel on 2009-02-09

In May of last year, it was announced that Model maker company Hornby had announced plans to purchase Corgi International, a company known for its 40+ year-long association with the James Bond series.

Since then, Hornby had been working to regain the lucrative 007 licence in order for Corgi to be able to produce more Bond models. Toy News reports today that a brand new deal has finally been arranged, bringing the licence back to the company.

Corgi will be bringing back the die-cast 1:36 scale Bond cars and will be launching products associated with both the classic 007 films as well as the forthcoming Bond 23.

Frank Martin, chief executive of Hornby commented: ‘We are delighted to have the Bond licence back with the Corgi brand. It was a “must get” after acquisition of Corgi last year as we feel it the perfect association for Corgi.’

After missing the opportunity to release tie-in models for last year’s Quantum of Solace, Corgi has lined up a new Daniel Craig Era set, which is due this May, priced at £30.00. Additionally, the Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace DBS are available in a Showcase ‘Fit the Box’ Scale, at £4.99.

A Pierce Brosnan Era set will follow in April at £30.00 and the Aston Martin Vanquish and the BMW 750i are both available in 1:36 scale (£13.99), along with the Showcase ‘Fit the Box’ Scale Aston Martin Vanquish (£4.99).

Also due in April is the the Roger Moore Era set (£30.00) and the 007 Lotus Turbo in a 1:36 scale (£13.99).

Complimenting these will be the release of the Sean Connery Era set (£30.00) and Little Nellie as a Showcase ‘Fit the Box’ Scale (£4.99). The Gyrocopter and Rolls Royce are available in 1:36 Scale (£13.99).

  6. Dame Judi Dench Supports Return Of Moneypenny And Q Characters

    By Devin Zydel on 2009-02-09

Like Daniel Craig before her, Dame Judi Dench has backed plans to bring the characters of Miss Moneypenny and Q back to the James Bond series.

    Dame Judi Dench

    Dame Judi Dench

According to the Lincolnshire Echo, Dame Judi briefly discussed the return of these characters in an interview with the Daily Telegraph. She said: ‘That would be good if it was thought right to bring back those characters. Wouldn’t it be Samantha Bond as Miss Moneypenny and John Cleese as Q. Who else?’

Dame Judi also confirmed her involvement in the forthcoming Bond 23, which will mark her seventh appearance as ‘M’ following her debut in 1995’s GoldenEye. She said: ‘You bet. As M you get to treat this powerful man very, very badly.’

As many 007 fans are aware, the Moneypenny and Q characters were dropped from Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace. Prior to this, Samantha Bond had portrayed the MI6 secretary for all four of Pierce Brosnan’s Bond films and had been quoted as saying that when Brosnan left the series, so would she.

‘If Miss Moneypenny is written in it wouldn’t be me–I left with my Bond,’ she said. ‘I think she’s missed but I am happy that she’s not there because it means I am irreplaceable.’

John Cleese first appeared in the series as ‘R’ in The World is not Enough and then inherited the gadgetmaster role from Desmond Llewellyn for Die Another Day.

What remains unclear at this very early stage is who exactly would portray these characters if they were indeed set to return. Voice your opinion here on the CommanderBond.net Forums.

James Bond wasn’t able to conquer the BAFTA Awards this year as Quantum of Solace came away empty-handed after being nominated in two categories.

The 22nd Bond film was up for awards in the Special Visual Effects and Sound categories, but lost to The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and Slumdog Millionaire, respectively.

2006’s Casino Royale won the latter award when it was nominated two years ago.

Daniel Craig made an appearance at the event along with girlfriend Satsuki Mitchell. Craig handed out the Best Actress award, which went to Kate Winslet for her role in The Reader. Craig briefly spoke about the show to the BBC News (click here to listen).
