  1. Sir Sean Connery undergoes shoulder surgery

    Sir Sean Connery

Sir Sean Connery has reportedly undergone surgery to fix his damaged shoulder.

The former James Bond star was said to be recovering at his home in the Bahamas following the procedure in October.

‘Sir Sean is in fine shape and recovering well,’ IMDB.com quoted a source as saying.

The 79-year-old purportedly went in for the operation because the injury was keeping him from playing his favourite sport—golf.

  2. Sale of Ian Fleming's Live and Let Die causes stir

    By Devin Zydel on 2009-11-12

A James Bond first edition by Ian Fleming has raised more than £3,000 at Edinburgh charity shop Oxfam.

    Ian Fleming

    Ian Fleming

The Edinburgh News reports that a donated copy of Live and Let Die, Fleming’s second 007 novel, was sold for almost £3,500.

The Bond title originally estimated to be worth around £800 but sold for more than four times that amount at Bonhams Auction House in Oxford, at the end of September.

The book turned up by surprise in a charity bin bag in September.

Oxfam Morningside bookshop manager Andy Crosby said: ‘Everyone at the shop was eager to see how much the book would be auctioned for. I didn’t think that it would raise so much money and I am thrilled that it did.’

‘It is not every day you manage to raise such an amount from the sale of one book, and the money will help to make a real difference to Oxfam’s programmes.’

  3. MGM Studio headed for sale

    By Devin Zydel on 2009-11-11

MGM may be the best known logo in the entertainment business, but the company seems headed for another possible garage sale.

Several sources say they expect that MGM will essentially be auctioned off within the next few weeks.

This would mean that a major, such as Time Warner, could buy the MGM-UA library while another entity might acquire the logo, and yet another deal could be made for United Artists. Sources speculated that Kirk Kerkorian, who has already bought and sold MGM twice, might buy the logo once again.

Last summer Harry Sloan was bounced as MGM’s CEO and Stephen Cooper, a specialist in restructuring companies (Krispy Kreme was one of his projects) started meeting with bankers with the aim of restructuring some $3.7 billion in debt. There was speculation that the combined assets of MGM may now yield as little as $1.5 billion in the present market.

The various equity owners of MGM, including several private equity firms, have already written down their $5 billion acquisition, which closed in 2004.

MGM’s library contains 4.000 titles, but some specialists in film libraries consider its list of titles to be geriatric.

Any sort of auction would need approval of a two-thirds majority of the bondholders, and a couple of the bondholders insist they have not been contacted as yet. Some sources believe a pre-packaged bankruptcy is still an option, and there is still an expectation that Time-Warner might make a last eleventh hour bid.

Neither Cooper nor MGM would comment.

MGM’s released only a remake of Fame this year. For 2010, it’s opening two comedies — Hot Tub Time Machine in March and The Zookeeper in October — and a remake of “Red Dawn in November.

  4. Shirley Bassey's No Good About Goodbye sparks Solace comparisons

    By Devin Zydel on 2009-11-10

With Dame Shirley Bassey’s brand new album The Performance being released in the UK this week, many fans are getting their first listen to the combined talents of current James Bond composer David Arnold (who produced the album) and the three-time 007 title theme performer.

    David Arnold

James Bond composer and The Performance producer David Arnold

One such song, No Good About Goodbye, is even sparking several comparisons to what possibly/could/might/just may be a rejected Quantum of Solace title theme from Arnold and lyricist Don Black.

Of particular notice is a five-note introduction melody that is rather similar to Arnold’s output in last year’s Quantum score as well as the inclusion of the word ‘solace’ in the lyrics.

What do you think? Listen here on YouTube.

When Black was asked about the more recent James Bond title themes around this time last year, he stated: ‘They’re not about being seductive or provocative, with that whiff of the boudoir about them. They’re also not as lyrically led. I’m all for the music that makes you think of menace and drama, of spiders running across the pillow. And personally, I’d get Shirley Bassey to sing them all.’

  6. Adam Croasdell lined up as 007 for Activision's 2010 James Bond game

    By Devin Zydel on 2009-11-09

A bit of news on the forthcoming James Bond video game from Activision has emerged online today at Digital Spy.

According to the site, British EastEnders actor Adam Croasdell has taken on the role of James Bond for the latest 007 game.

The 29-year old soap star, who has featured on several UK television shows, confirmed the news in an interview with BBC Asian Network. He states: ‘Oddly enough I have just played James Bond in the new James Bond video game—how weird is that? I don’t know what the future holds, but I’m always into varying up what comes my way, trying new things.’

He continued: ‘I think video games and the making of that type of technology, being in a funny one-piece suit and being shot with 60 cameras, I think that’s sort of the future.’

‘Andy Serkis did it in The Hobbit, and there’s a new film Avatar which is James Cameron—it’s all that sort of motion capture. I think it’s the future, so I was fascinated to see how that would happen.’

‘I think in our lifetime it is going to swing very much into the realms of computerised environments and who knows, maybe there will be more of that.’

At this point, very little has been released regarding Activision’s plans for 007 next year. As CommanderBond.net readers will recall, their announced ‘racing-oriented’ Bond game was pushed back from it’s original September 2009 release date.
