  1. Sean Connery Signs 2 Million Pound Deal for Autobiography

    By Athena Stamos on 2004-07-04

James Bond legend, Sean Connery, now 73, has finally agreed to write his life story after previously saying he would never complete his memoirs. He will tell his whole story which starting in humble Edinburgh and continued to world fame as James Bond… and beyond.

“It’s rather scary, but utterly exhilarating, and I’m looking forward to it. Having always vowed never to write my autobiography, here I am standing on the runway awaiting my journey into a new space.”

    -Sir Sean Connery

Publisher HarperCollins confirmed last Sunday that Sir Sean Connery had secured a six-figure deal for the eagerly awaited autobiography. Connery has received about £1m for the British and Commonwealth rights to his story from HarperCollins, while American and European rights will boost that sum to more than £2m.

“We are honoured to have been selected to represent Sir Sean Connery, whose memoir has long been thought of as the “Holy Grail” for publishers. His is an astonishing life, encompassing as it does the highest levels of artistic achievement over the longest period of time on the international scene. It is also one of the great personal stories of triumph over humble beginnings.”

    -Mort Janklow
Negotiator of the high-profile deal for UK and Commonwealth rights to Sir Sean`s autobiography

Sean Connery’s autobiography will be due for publication in the autumn of 2006. It will not only please fans for the details it will reveal of over 40 years of movie history, but is expected to settle several old scores as well. Those who have crossed the star in the press, politics and film world have reason to be apprehensive of what the book might reveal.

“He has promised that he is going to be very frank about his entire life.”

    -Spokeswoman for HarperCollins

His autobiography is likely to include his stormy relationship with the James Bond film producers. And details of his turbulent marriage to Diane Cilento. Accusations that he beat her up still make the star angry and he has flatly denied them. He also denies making the comment: “To slap a woman is not the cruellest thing you can do to her.”

  2. "You want to put Bond in a gorilla suit?"

    By Jim on 2004-06-28

    “Possibly I’m an egomaniac…”

    George MacDonald Fraser

First published in 2002, The Light’s on at Signpost, the memoir of George MacDonald Fraser, could not in all conscience be labelled dull; “challenging” is perhaps its most realistic description. For amongst entertaining anecdotage extending into and beyond his involvement with Octopussy, Mr Fraser has indulged himself in delivering of his views upon modern British society, in particular the Blair administrations and prevailing social attitudes.

One wonders of a man who describes himself as “a liberal myself” but proceeds to deliver of the following:

“Who would have believed, fifty years ago, that by the end of the century, it would have been deemed permissible, by the BBC of all people, to call the Queen “a bitch”, or that the foulest language and vilest pronography would be commonplace on television, or that we would have a government legislating to break up the United Kingdom, barely bothering to conceal their republican bent, guilty of atrocious war crimes, rashly declaring war on Muslim terrorism which did not threaten us, while crawling abjectly to the IRA and even assisting it by releasing murderers from prison, making a criminal out of an honest shopkeeper because he sold in pounds and ounces, and jailing for life a decent householder who dared to defend his home by shooting a burglar, refusing to take any effective action against violent crime, encouraging sexual perversion by lowering the age of consent and drug abuse by relaxing the law on cannabis, legislating for women to serve on the front line (while the gallant warriors of Westminster sit snug and safe), showing themselves dead to any notion of patriotism and even discouraging the use of the word “British”, falling over themselves to destroy our institutions simply because they are frightened of offending hostile aliens, seeking to deny the right of habeas corpus, pandering to the bigotry of black racists and encouraging racial strife by their timid stupidity, letting foreign interests wreck our farming and fishing industries, and allowing the children of those wonderful people who gave us Belsen and Dachau a vital say in making our law and undermining our constitution…”

He lives on the Isle of Man; perhaps these are relatively liberal opinions – the Isle of Man is not noted for progressive thought and its social enlightenment and has failed to make it a substantial world power, funnily enough. The thinkpieces within the book could be labelled “Fings ain’t wot they used to be” and read and agreed with or ignored as the last roar of the jurassic. Can’t say he’s wrong, for that would be so very arrogant, and all of it is engaging, but one wonders how such opinions would go down on a message board such as CBn’s, for example.

No matter; a man’s views are a man’s views and of no more consequence than ripples in the stream. They might be barking, they might be brilliant. All I can venture is that although I read the book a week ago, some of what is written made me drop the book in the bath in either amusement or outrage or a combination of the two, and it’s been drying out in the airing cupboard all that time.

Of more interest, and what combine to be the (rather cynical) usp of the book (he’s probably right in implying that had the book simply been the collection of “me thoughts”, in which he appears far more animated, it wouldn’t exist), the reminiscing about some films and some film stars, Octopussy included.

Things we learn, before the Bond stuff:

Guy Hamilton is a favourite of his, and had (with GMF) substantial input into Superman, although Alexander Salkind’s suggestion that Muhammed Ali would be cast as the Man of Steel seems to have been Salkind’s own work; GMF claims no credit and one can’t imagine why.

Guy Hamilton used to show rough cuts of his pictures to the support staff and cleaners at the studios, to make sure the popular audience “got it”.

Ali visited the set of The Man with the Golden Gun to pay homage to Christopher Lee; indeed, it is suggested that he dedicated his victory at the Rumble in the Jungle to Lee.

The supervillains in Superman/Superman II eventually played by Terence Stamp etc were initially to be played by Christopher Lee as Zod (wow), Ursula Andress and Charles Bronson, with Mickey Rooney (?) as a fourth, “jester” character.

Alexander Salkind considered Brando’s Jor-El might enter his scenes as if “coming in from golf”.

Edward Fox was brought into Force Ten from Navarone as a last-minute substitute for an actor who was so displeased with the producer that he had wrenched the ‘phone from the wall; that actor being a “volatile Scot”…hmm…

Both Sean Connery and Roger Moore were in the running for the lead in an adaptation of Taipan that never happened (the later production was not GMF-related)

    And then…

“There may have been nicer people in Hollywood than Albert “Cubby” Broccoli, but I never met them…generous and considerate, and his staff and colleagues regarded him with an affection which I suspect was unique to a movie tycoon…it was simply that they liked him, and Cubby knew it and was touchingly grateful for it.”

Now, whilst the Eon backed DVD documentaries have birthed the suspicion of revisionist history of Mr Broccoli, what we have with this memoir is a Fraser unafraid to let fly with sourness when he feels like it; for this sort of glowing testimonial, therefore, it suggests there’s some truth in those rumours…

The picture of Broccoli created is one of a man extremely defensive of his output, and exceedingly protective of it too (his is the quote appearing at the top of this piece; GMF seems to have won him over). The overall experience GMF had was positive; albeit nervous at handling Bond, “it had immense advantages all too rare in the film world: you knew it was going to get made…”

    Things new (to me, anyway):

It was GMF who suggested India (is this contradicted by a vague memory I have of India being suggested since Moonraker?)

GMF suggested Kabir Bedi for the role of Gobinda.

Broccoli considered filming GMF’s Flashman series, but expense and contractual difficulties proved prohibitive. [For what it’s worth, a personal view is that Roger Moore would have been great as Flash].

GMF proposed a pre-credits sequence set at the Isle of Man TT races, a duel-to-the-death motorbike and sidecar race between Bond and a villain, two Bond “dollies” kicking about, “Swedish and German girls” in “leathers”; sounds something like our own John Cox’s proposal for the pre-credits of his treatment “Shatterhand“, in the fan fiction section here on CBn.

When Bond is in the village in Germany, trying to get into the ‘phone booth, he would seek change for the call from a passer-by – cut to Gert Frobe claiming, “Sorry, I only have gold”. (!!!)

But the key passage and something to dwell on in whatever criticisms we all have of Bond, some more vocal than others, is one where he describes how Bond, basically, is “the biggest thing in Hollywood”

“This was brought home when Michael Wilson joined Kathy (Mrs GMF) and me at breakfast in our hotel on the first morning. The coffee shop was full of young Hollywood bravos talking deals, exchanging gossip, butchering characters… ‘taking meetings’… ‘doing lunch’… and bandying big names – until Wilson got to his feet and said: ‘Well, we musn’t keep Cubby waiting.’ Silence descended like a great blanket; heads turned on the magic name; and then the whispering started and continued until after we had left, followed by respectful stares, and an echo of the magic word ‘…Bond‘.”

Infuritating, fascinating, appalling and exhilirating, a fun memoir, well worth a few moments of your time. Dries out remarkably slowly, though.

  3. 'Diamonds Are Forever' Mustang Mach 1 Showcased at L.A. Auction

    By David Winter on 2004-06-28

The Diamonds Are Forever Mach 1

CBn was on the scene Saturday (6/26) as Tiffany Case’s red 1971 Ford Mustang Mach 1 “Fastback” from Diamonds Are Forever was put on the auction block during the fast and furious Barrett-Jackson Automobile Auction held the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles. Over 117 cars were auctioned off in a scene that resembled a high-price cattle auction (with the revving of engines replacing the mooing of cows).

Mike Alameda waiting in the Mach 1 to drive up on the block

It was near the end of the day when current owner of the Bond car, Mike Alameda, drove the Mach 1 up on the auction platform with his young son in the passenger seat beside him. A poster for Diamonds Are Forever was set beside the car for good measure. The bidding began in earnest, but after peaking at $23,000, the Mach 1 one was let go without having met its reserve price.

[To view movie clips of the DAF Mach1 on the block –> Quicktime MOV 13.71MB

Mike Alameda talking with CBn's John CoxCBn spoke with the affable Mr. Alameda before and after the auction, and he generously shared the history of the car he has owned for over 20 years. Surprisingly, Alameda brought the car in the mid ’80s with no idea that it had been used in a James Bond film! It wasn’t until just a few years ago, when Alameda decided it was time to sell the car, that he decided to do some research and get the original documentation on the vehicle. Much to his surprise, the documentation showed that this “fastback” was the principal “hero car” driven by Jill St. John and Sean Connery in his final official appearance as James Bond. Additional research with the director of chase scenes on 1971’s Diamonds Are Forever confirmed this fact. All the documentation was displayed alongside the car at the auction, along with several trophies the car had won, on its own merits, at classic cars shows.

While this car was the Mach 1 used in the bulk of the highlight chase scene through the streets of Las Vegas, Alameda notes that the Mach 1 that went through the alleyway on two wheels — the “tilt car” as he calls it — was another vehicle customized to perform that one stunt.

The inside of the Mach 1The car is a fully optioned early production Mach 1, with 429 Cobra Jet Ram Air engine, C-6 automatic, with trim rings and hub caps and reproduction White side wall tires. It is in absolutely pristine condition. For the auction, the car sported special Diamonds Are Forever “007” license plates.

While the car didn’t fetch his reserve price, Alameda didn’t seem disappointed. Despite being held in Los Angeles, and despite an appearance by Pamela Anderson on stage, the Barrett-Jackson Automobile Auction seemed more geared to buyers seeking rare classic cars than buying a piece of famous movie memorabilia (a taxi cab used by the Seinfeld cast sold for only $5000). Even before the auction, Alameda told CBn that what he feared most was that someone would buy the car who had no interest in its Bond connection, and the famous Mach 1 Mustang might never be seen by Bond fans again.

But, happily, that didn’t happen on this day.

Tiffany Case’s Mach 1 Mustang from Diamonds Are Forever is still around for fans to enjoy, and it’s still for sale. Those serious about owning this major piece of Bond history (and one heck of a cool car) can contact Mike Alameda via email: [email protected].

  4. German Bond 21 Release Date Set

    By Tim Roth on 2004-06-26

20th Century Fox of Germany, who distributes the cinematic Bond in Germany, published a press release two days ago, briefly mentioning that "Bond 21 will be released on December 8th, 2005".

No other additional information has been given. With "Die Another Day", originally scheduled for a December 5, 2002 release in Germany, Fox decided in summer 2002 to get the movie a November 28 release. So, perhaps there is hope for all fellow German Bond fans…

Meanwhile, sources are saying that Eon Productions is "close to a decission" regarding who is going to play Bond. It’s also said that Neil Purvis and Robert Wade have delivered the first draft of the script by early June. It is expected that a director will be announced in late summer.

    CBn will keep you informed!

  5. 'Diamonds Are Forever' Mustang to be Auctioned THIS Saturday in L.A.

  6. Original 'Die Another Day' Costumes Sell at Benefit Auction

    By David Winter on 2004-06-18

    Vincent Price's Beverly Hills Home

CBn was on the scene last night when the “Blades” fencing costume worn by Pierce Brosnan and the maroon “Laser Lair” catsuit worn by Halle Berry in 2002’s hit James Bond film, Die Another Day, were sold as part of a special private auction hosted by the world-renowned Christie’s Auction House and benefiting the USC School of Cinema-Television. The invitation only event was held in the palatial former home of actor Vincent Price in Beverly Hills. The costumes were donated by Michael G. Wilson, a long time supporter of the USC film school program (where Wilson taught a class in 1998).

    Brosnan & Berry's DAD costumes

Pierce Brosnan’s James Bond fencing costume sold for $1,800 as part of the silent auction before the live event. Halle Berry’s Jinx catsuit fetched $1,700. Also part of the silent auction was one of the special James Bond 40th Anniversary Omega Seamasters (number 105 of a limited edition of 10,007) which sold for $1,300.

    Omega Seamaster

During the spirited Live Auction, a ticket to Hugh Hefner’s annual “Midsummer Night’s Dream Party” at the Playboy Mansion (which James Bond himself attended in Raymond Benson’s short story Midsummer Night’s Doom) sold for $5000 to a woman who said she was buying it as a gift for her husband.

Willy Wonka's Gold TicketClearly the most coveted item of the night was an original Golden Ticket from the 1971 film Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory. Bond fans will recall that this film — and the book on which it was based — was written by You Only Live Twice screenwriter Roald Dahl. The ticket, one of only five still in existence, was the last offering of the night and fetched a whopping $10,000.

Some interesting non-Bond items sold were a pair of Wolverine’s claws from X-2: X-Men United ($2000), Alfred Hitchcock’s last passport and California drivers license Live Auction($6,500), and lunch with Steven Spielberg in his private DreamWorks dining room (price unavailable).

The fundraising event was held as part of the USC School of Cinema-Television’s 75th Anniversary. All the auction items were donated and all proceeds from the sale go directly to the film school. Christie’s also donated their services for the evening.

Brosnan is a staunch environmentalist, whose name regularly appears throughout the worldwide media associated with issues of enivornmental concern (recent events include Brosnan successfully backing a bill to halt the logging of heritage trees and the launching of the environmental ship “Song of the Whale”). The actor, who was named by People Magazine as the Sexiest Man Alive for 2001, has been given notable prominence throughout PETA’s campaign for the contest.

The winner of the title for men and women has been conducted by PETA through an on-line survey for the contests for the past two years, where this year’s list consists of more than 200 well-known vegetarian celebrities.

Other Bond stars to appear on the list include Joanna Lumley, Kim Basinger and current Q, John Cleese. 007’s music stars are also amongst consideration for the title, including The Pretenders’ Chrissie Hynde, kd lang, Moby and Paul McCartney. McCartney had previously appeared on an episode of The Simpsons championing his cause as a vegetarian alongside his late wife Linda McCartney, complete with a reference to his hit theme song to Live and Let Die. Additionally, Everything or Nothing Bond girls Shannon Elizabeth and Mya have been nominated.

Rumoured future 007 Orlando Bloom also makes an appearance on the list.

According to the worldwide organisation, more and more celebrities are taking up vegetarianism, with the “World’s Sexiest” poll an attempt to highlight and promote the celebs who are “embracing the brocolli and giving beef the boot”.

Pearl Harbor‘s Josh Hartnett and President George W. Bush’s niece Lauren Bush were voted 2003’s “Sexiest Vegetarians” during last year’s contest.

  10. Sean Connery Visits Greece

    By Athena Stamos on 2004-06-10

James Bond legend, Sir Sean Connery and his wife – Lady Micheline Roquebrune Connery – visited Athens, Greece today. Connery expressed a wish, which was granted, to meet with Athens 2004 President Gianna Angelopoulos-Daskalaki to be informed of the course of Olympic preparations.

“A very impressive personality [Mrs Angelopoulos]. I was impressed by the presentation of the preparation. I must say that I have been following it, as quite knowledgeable about the background. You cannot be anything but impressed with the journey that she has made and what she has done. We had a very nice conversation about after the games, what happens, the amount of work, and the statistics.”

    Sean Connery
Press Release – Athens, Greece 2004

    Q. Are you going to come during the Olympic Games?

Connery: Well I was explaining that to the President. I am preparing for a film at the moment and it is going to take me two or more weeks to get a diary calendar together. I am hoping to be able to come either at the beginning or at the end, or some time. At the moment it is difficult because of my schedule. I am sure the Games are going to be tremendous. It has been quite a drama to get down to the wire.

    Q. We will be glad to have you here again during the Olympic Games.

Connery: I definitely want to come. I am sure the Games are going to be a huge success because they will be different, because Greece is different. For example, see how successful the Games were for Australia and even Los Angeles, its also great that it is here in Europe.

Sean Connery at the Athens 2004 Olympic StadiumAfter his meeting with the President, Sir Sean Connery and his wife then visited the Athens Olympic Complex which is still being prepared for this August’s 2004 summer’s Olympics. The couple was escorted by Athens 2004 Executive Director, Yiannis Pyrgiotis and OCOG technical staff. They gave Connery a tour of the Olympic Velodrome and the Olympic Stadium. Sir Sean Connery showed particular interest in details of the construction.

“I have seen it from the road and it’s impossible to comprehend how exciting is the use of space. It is like being somewhere else, unique and also still being able to see Athens. The appearance is exciting. Amazing the interior of the whole stadium. As a construction, as a concept, as number of seats, it is an impressive space that you cannot believe it only by being here, witnessing it. The scale of everything in here, you see these tiny figures up on the roof at the stadium here with seats for 75,000 people I am certain it will be a huge success.”
