Hardcover Release For 'Young Bond 5'

According to a report from Bond And Beyond, the final instalment of Charlie Higson’s Young Bond series will be released in a hardcover edition on 4 September 2008.

The book will retail for £12.99.

The currently untitled novel will centre on the events leading to James Bond’s expulsion from Eton. Back in July, Higson revealed he was hard at work on the book, while he later dropped further hints in CBn’s exclusive interview.

The most recent novel in Charlie Higson’s series, Hurricane Gold, was the first to receive the hardcover treatment – and did so in lavish all-gold style.

Young Bond 5 will continue a stellar year for fans of the literary 007, as the Ian Fleming Centenary celebrations take place. Sebastian Faulks’ Devil May Care and Samantha Weinberg’s The Moneypenny Diaries: Final Fling are among the treats awaiting James Bond fans in 2008.

The site also reports that the Hurricane Gold paperback is now due 28 May 2008 – the same release date as Devil May Care. The Young Bond Dossier reports that Puffin are yet to decide whether the paperback will be published with the all-gold treatment, or if it will feature artwork in line with the three previous Young Bond books.

Additionally, The Young Bond Dossier reports that Arena will publish the German edition of Hurricane Gold in Spring 2008; the German title is still to be announced.

'James Bond: The Authorised Biography Of 007' Republished

The little-known continuation novel, John Pearson’s James Bond: The Authorised Biography Of 007 has been republished in a hardback edition by Century and is now shipping from Amazon.co.uk.

Originally released in 1973, this edition marks the first publication of the novel since 1986, when it was republished by Grafton in the UK and Grove Press in the US.

This reprint was delayed for over a year, after being initially announced for release in September 2006.

The metafictional novel purports to reveal the “true” story of Ian Fleming’s famous secret agent.

A paperback edition is due for release in May next year.

'Devil May Care' Large Print Paperback Coming In May '08

With the date of Ian Fleming’s centenary slowly approaching, details and ordering info on Devil May Care, the forthcoming James Bond novel by Sebastian Faulks, are starting to pick up.

The Young Bond Dossier reports that a large print paperback edition of the new 007 novel by Faulks is available to pre-order at amazon.com.

To be published by Random House Large Print, the 480 page long paperback will retail for $24.95 and is due to be released alongside the regular US hardback and audiobook.

Typically released in very limited quantites, and the majority going to libraries make large print James Bond novels sometimes very difficult to track down. Pre-ordering is strongly recommended. Past large print editions have appeared for Raymond Benson’s High Time To Kill, The World Is Not Enough, Doubleshot, Never Dream Of Dying, and Die Another Day, as well as many of the Ian Fleming novels and all of the John Gardner novels with the exception of 1989’s Licence To Kill. Recent large print releases include Live And Let Die, On Her Majesty’s Secret Service and Charlie Higson’s SilverFin.

According to Faulks, Devil May Care is set in 1967 when “Bond is damaged, aging and in a sense it is the return of the gunfighter for one last heroic mission.”

Devil May Care is due for release in May 2008 and will be published by Penguin in the UK and Doubleday in the US.

Dutch 'Double Or Die' Coming In 2008

24 September UPDATE (this article originally posted on 30 August): James Bond Nederland and 007nl.net, the Dutch edition of Double Or Die will be published by Pimento kinderboeken in spring 2008. An official title has not yet been released.

According to an article from 007nl.net, the Dutch release of Charlie Higson’s third Young James Bond novel, Double Or Die, has encountered some delays.

Publisher Pimento kinderboeken had originally planned to release Double Or Die at the end of this August, but the rights have apparently moved to a different publisher. As a result, concrete details as to when the novel (as well as the upcoming fourth novel, Hurricane Gold) will eventually hit bookshelves have become sketchy.

Pimento kinderboeken previously released editions of Higson’s SilverFin and Blood Fever. CBn will keep you updated on the eventual release of this Dutch edition of Double Or Die.

First Look At The 'Double Or Die' Collector's Edition

As previously reported on CBn, a collector’s edition of Double or Die, Charlie Higson’s third Young James Bond novel, was set for release in October of this year.

The Young Bond Dossier reports that a copy has already sprung up on eBay and thus provided fans with the first look at the new edition.

As with both SilverFin and Blood Fever before it, the collector’s edition of Double or Die is limited to 999 copies (all signed by Higson).

Even James Bond Goes Shopping

While the upcoming centenary novel, Devil May Care, by Sebastian Faulks won’t be released until May of next year, James Bond fans will be interested to know that the author included an amusing 007 story in his collection of parodies, Pistache, which was released in October 2006.

Entitled Ian Fleming Thinks Even James Bond Goes Shopping, the parody features Bond on a mission of sorts in a supermarket:

Ignoring the selection of instant mashed potato (Cadbury’s Smersh, he thought ruefully), he walked through pet food and made for the wine selection, which was supervised by a young Mexican.

‘Tell me,’ said Bond, ‘do you have a Chateau Gruaud La Rose 1990?’

‘Eh, no, sir, but we ‘ave the Sauvignon/Shiraz from Paraguay for £3.99.’

It was part of Bond’s profession to kill people. He never liked doing it, he reflected as he fitted the silencer to his .25 Beretta, regret was unprofessional. In any case, a cellar master without a decent Médoc did not really deserve to live.

'Double Or Die' Collector's Edition Coming In October

17 September UPDATE (this article originally posted on 16 August): The collector’s edition of Charlie Higson’s Double Or Die is now listed as available for pre-order online at Waterstones.com and amazon.co.uk. While amazon lists the novel’s release date as October 2007, Watertones.com notes a 30 September release date.

As previously noted by CBn back in April, a collector’s edition of Charlie Higson’s third Young James Bond novel, Double Or Die, is set for release in October of this year.

The Young Bond Dossier confirms the release for 25 October 2007, pointing out that it will be a Waterstone’s bookstore exclusive in the UK.

This collector’s edition of Double Or Die will come in a slipcase and be signed and numbered by Higson.

Previously, both SilverFin and Blood Fever were released as collector’s edition hardbacks in the UK–each limited to 999 signed copies.

Sebastian Faulks Puts James Bond Back In A Bentley

While the cinematic 007 and Aston Martin seem to go hand in hand, this won’t be the case for the upcoming centenary James Bond novel, Devil May Care, by Sebastian Faulks.

According to a report from the Telegraph, Faulks will be putting James Bond back behind the wheel of a Bentley. ‘Despite many of the films portraying him with an Aston Martin, Bond’s first choice of car was a Bentley, so that is what he will be driving in my book,’ the author said.

‘He also spends quite a lot of time abroad on his adventure, so in want of a hire car, which wouldn’t really befit James, he will also have a driver at his disposal.’

Faulks also revealed that the car would be ‘battleship grey’–the same colour of the supercharged Bentley 4 1/2-Litre convertible featured in Ian Fleming’s Casino Royale.

James Rosenstein, Bentley’s global director of external affairs, said: ‘It is wonderful that somebody has decided to go back to the roots of the original book, to Ian Fleming’s own tastes and to James Bond’s passion for the cars.’ He also mentioned that car could be a 1967 T-series Bentley.

As previously mentioned by Faulks, Devil May Care is set in 1967 when ‘Bond is damaged, aging and in a sense it is the return of the gunfighter for one last heroic mission.’ The novel’s action is played out over two continents and ‘several of the world’s most thrilling cities’ including Paris.
