  1. Casino Royale To Feature Only Eight Marketing Partners

    By Devin Zydel on 2006-07-29

News has recently come to light about the marketing partners to feature in the 21st James Bond film, Casino Royale.

According to USA Today, only eight companies will be apart of the global marketing campaign by Sony. In comparison, Die Another Day featured around 20.

The reason for this change, according to Mary Goss Robino, senior vice president, global marketing partnerships is ‘by choice… We work hand-in-hand with them to make sure everything fits with the brand and the character James Bond.’ Mitch Litvak, CEO of The L.A. Office (a company connecting studios and marketers) says: ‘there’s a point where there are too many partners, but the studios are much more proactive about making sure they don’t overdo it, especially for something with as much caliber as Bond.’

Smirnoff Vodka is one of the brands that will be featured in Casino Royale. ‘The James Bond and Smirnoff brands have gone hand in hand for more than 40 years, and throughout our rich history together, we have both remained true to our roots — clearly original… today, Bond is as much a part of Smirnoff’s history as Smirnoff is of Bond’s — and we’re delighted to be part of this latest chapter,’ says James Thompson, President, Smirnoff Global Marketing.

  2. James Bond Boat Show Heading To Sydney

    By Devin Zydel on 2006-07-29

James Bond fans will get a chance to see four of the magnificent boats used in the 007 films, thanks to the Sydney International Boat Show – reports the Sydney Morning Herald.

Set for 3 to 8 August 2006 at the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre, the show will feature the Tow Sled from Thunderball, the Bath-O-Sub from Diamonds Are Forever, the Neptune Submarine from For Your Eyes Only, and the Q-Boat from The World Is Not Enough.

    Thunderball: Tow Sled (1965)
The underwater tow sled was used by James Bond and the villain Largo. There were 14 boats originally built for the production company. Today, there are only two known to exist. The original builder, Jordan Klein, owns the other remaining sled.

    Diamonds Are Forever: Bath-O-Sub (1971)
The underwater bath-o-sub is one of two originally featured in the film and was used by 007’s nemesis, Blofeld, to escape from the oil-drilling platform that doubled as his headquarters. It can be seen as Blofeld climbs inside and is lowered over the side of the oil platform.

For Your Eyes Only: Neptune Submarine (1981)
This Neptune submarine is one of two originally built by the film’s production company. This is the actual working wet submersible that was seen throughout most of the film. It had to be operated by stunt men using scuba gear.

The World Is Not Enough: Q Boat (1999)
Major Boothroyd’s famous Q boat. Fifteen boats were originally built for the production. Today only 8 survive. The Q Boat that performed the barrel roll stunt seen on the screen will be on display.

The Sydney International Boat Show will be located at the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre & Cockle Bay Marina, Darling Harbour. Show times are from 10 AM – 8PM.

Admission: Adults $17; Children (under 16) $9; Pensioner Holders $11 (with ID); Senior Card Holders $15; Family (2 adults and up to three kids) $40. Full details here or visit the official website.

  3. Sir Sean Connery To Be Honoured At Rome Film Festival

    By Devin Zydel on 2006-07-28

ANSA recently reported that Rome’s new film festival would honour Sir Sean Connery, ‘an actor of extraordinary quality who has worked with the world’s greatest directors and written some of the most unforgettable moments in movie history.’ The full announcement:

Rome’s new film festival on Tuesday announced it would honour Scottish screen legend Sean Connery during its inaugural edition in October.

In announcing the news, Rome’s cinephile mayor, Walter Veltroni, called Connery “an actor of extraordinary quality who has worked with the world’s greatest directors and written some of the most unforgettable moments in movie history”.

He also said the evergreen celebrity “loves Italy”. Connery, 76, will attend the opening and closing ceremonies in October and introduce a 14-film restrospective starting with Sidney Lumet’s gritty 1965 army drama The Hill, often considered his best work, and ending with Finding Forrester (2000).

The former Edinburgh milkman and coffin polisher – since 2000 Sir Sean Connery – will also receive the festival’s first career achievement award. Last month he was similarly honoured by the American Film Institute.

A DVD in which Connery looks back on his life and career will be presented when the Rome fest debuts on October 13.

Interviewed for the DVD by Italian movie buff Mario Sesti, Connery goes back to his early days – “I wasn’t that good at cleaning coffins, but the money wasn’t bad” – and, as a famous golf lover, explains the double meaning of his Bahamas home, Out of Bounds.

He is teasingly non-committal about an urban legend that he declined to travel to Venice to pick up a Golden Lion because there weren’t any good golf courses in the area.

To the dismay of many fans, he confirms that sex is a distant third to golf and whiskey on the list of his passions.

Asked why he never wrote an autobiography, he replies: “I spent so long correcting all the mistakes in the first book about me that I got fed up with the idea”.

For most screen fans, Connery is the definitive Bond.

He made six 007 films – Dr No (’62), From Russia With Love (’63), Goldfinger (’64), Thunderball (’65), You Only Live Twice (’67) and Diamonds Are Forever (’71) before swearing “never again” – only to come back in the softer-edged, spoofy Never Say Never Again (’83).

Connery soon tired of the money-spinning franchise, despite the fact that, with “The name is Bond, James Bond”, it put him up with Clark Gable (“Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn” and Humphrey Bogart (“We’ll always have Paris”) in the contenders for all-time immortal lines. He tried to break away from Bond and demonstrate his ability in a string of variably received films including Hitchcock’s Marnie (’64), John Boorman’s Zardoz (’71), Martin Ritt’s The Molly Maguires (’74) and John Huston’s The Man Who Would Be King (’75).

But his only Oscar came late in his career, a Best Supporting Actor gong for his portrayal of a gutsy Chicago cop in Brian De Palma’s The Untouchables (1987).

After that, he worked for Steven Spielberg in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade before basking in an Indian summer with blockbusters like The Hunt for Red October, Rising Sun, The Rock and The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Rome’s debut festival will run at the new ‘City of Music’ Auditorium between October 13 and October 21, featuring around 80 movies.

The initiative has been given a cool reception by Venice officials, who fear it may usurp the position of its festival, the world’s oldest, on the international scene.

Venice, which will host the 63rd edition of its festival in September, probably has good reason to be wary.

Aside from the issue of facilities – Venice’s pale in comparison with the Auditorium designed by iconic architect Renzo Piano – the Eternal City has special appeal because it has always played a much bigger role in the filmmaking world.

Many Italian and Hollywood classics were set in the capital, such as Federico Fellini’s La Dolce Vita and William Wyler’s 1953 romance, Roman Holiday, starring Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck.

Rome’s legendary Cinecitta’ Studios are where Fellini and other maestros like Luchino Visconti and Vittorio De Sica produced their best work during the post-war golden age of Italian cinema.

The studios and the city continue to play a starring role in the industry.

Martin Scorsese shot Gangs of New York at Cinecitta’ and Mel Gibson filmed parts of The Passion of the Christ there, while Ocean’s Twelve and Mission Impossible III are among the movies Rome has recently provided backdrops for.

Therefore, some cinema experts believe that, if the capital’s festival takes off, many producers will prefer to present their wares here than in Venice.

What’s more, the controversies and organization problems that have overshadowed Venice at times in recent years could make it vulnerable to the advances of a glamorous upstart.

For example, Italy’s own Roberto Benigni – the director of the Oscar-winning Life Is Beautiful – presented his last movie The Tiger and the Snow in Toronto, not Venice, last year.

The official UK website for the 21st James Bond film, Casino Royale, has been updated with a new video.

The video, ‘Fighting,’ covers the massive amounts of work that go into one of the fight sequences of the film. In this case it is the stairwell sequence which pits Daniel Craig’s James Bond against one of the villains in the film. Craig, director Martin Campbell, and stunt co-ordinator Gary Powell all comment on the sequence.

‘You get to something like the stairwell sequence, which is particularly difficult to do because you have to film it in quite constricting circumstances… we had to rehearse the fight on level ground and then film it on the stairs and it’s quite hard’ says Craig. The video can be accessed at the official UK website, click on the left card on the main menu and then ‘Video.’

  6. Chris Cornell On The Casino Royale Title Song

    By Devin Zydel on 2006-07-27

It was confirmed today that Chris Cornell would perform the main title song for Casino Royale. Working alongside composer David Arnold, the title theme will be called ‘You Know My Name.’

In a recent article on MTV, Cornell voiced some of his early concerns on taking the job and what clinched the deal:

‘I wasn’t really sure about doing a Bond theme, because I wasn’t really a big fan of the last several movies,” he said. “And then I heard that there was going to be a new guy — Daniel Craig — who was going to play Bond. And he’s so different. I have seen him in several movies, and I was kind of intrigued. So I went to Prague, where they were shooting the movie, and they showed me a rough edit of it. I was just completely blown away by it, because it’s unlike any Bond film ever, really. [Craig] is an actor’s actor, and there’s emotional content to [the movie]. He’s not like the swaggering, winking sort of super-agent guy. He’s like a human being in this movie, and it’s going to completely readjust the way people think of the character.

  9. Chris Cornell To Perform Casino Royale Title Song

    By Devin Zydel on 2006-07-26

While rumours were circulating around the net that Chris Cornell was the artist chosen to perform the title song for the 21st official James Bond film, Casino Royale, it has today been confirmed, reports PR Newswire.

In collaboration with composer David Arnold, Cornell has written and will perform the main title song ‘You Know My Name’ for the film. Casino Royale will be the first film since 1983’s Octopussy to not feature a main title song that matches the name of the film.

He joins the ranks of Madonna, Sheryl Crow, Duran Duran, and Paul McCartney as performers who have also written the main title song.

“I’ve always loved Chris’ work, both as a writer and as an artist, and had hoped someday to find the right film to inspire him… His music is both soulful and tough. It was the perfect complement to Daniel Craig and Casino Royale, says Lia Vollack, President, Worldwide Music for Columbia Pictures.

Cornell is best known for his previous work with both Soundgarden and Audioslave. He released his solo album, Euphoria Morning, in late 1999 and has also provided songs to the Great Expectations and Mission: Impossible II soundtracks. The third album from Audioslave, currently titled Revelations, is set for release in September 2006.
