  1. Daniel Craig's Cruel James Bond

    By Devin Zydel on 2006-08-10

Daniel Craig has revealed that his James Bond will be a little bit different than before – reports The Mirror.

When asked about the harsh criticism that was thrown his way, Craig said ‘you lose your sense of humour rapidly. But I vowed to work twice as hard to get it right,’ to US magazine Esquire.

  2. 'The Science Of James Bond' Set For September Release In UK

    By Devin Zydel on 2006-08-09

The Science of James Bond: From Bullets to Bowler Hats to Boat Jumps, the Real Technology behind 007’s Fabulous Films by Lois H. Gresh and Robert Weinberg is now available to pre-order on amazon.co.uk.

Published by Wiley Publishers and 224 pages in length, it will be released on 6 September 2006 in the UK and can currently be pre-ordered for a discounted price of £7.19. The Science of James Bond will be released on 25 August in the US.

The book, which features an introduction by past literary 007 author Raymond Benson, covers the science of James Bond: the gadgets, cars, and technology. Trivia lists and questions of ‘possible or impossible,’ according to Wiley Publishers are asked throughout. The full description follows:

While many people dream about Bond’s sartorial, gambling, and sexual skills, they also dream about his gadgets: the Walther PPK gun, golden guns, ray guns, and rocket-firing cigarettes; spy shaving kit, poisonous shoes, homing device buttons; Geiger counter wrist watch, television wrist watch, buzz saw wrist watch; decoders, voice synthesizers, cameras, decapitating tea trays, killer hookahs, moonbuggies, underwater propulsion devices, mini-jets, and cars cars cars. And that’s just a small glimpse at the vast array of super-science gadgets issued by Q Division to Agent 007. This book is about the gadgets, the science, the cars, and the technology. How realistic are James Bond’s adventures and all the equipment that goes with them? How believable is Jaws, who chews through metal? Just how easy is it to crack into all those top-secret facilities to save the world? Is James Bond rooted in science, or are his adventures and the technology that fills them science fiction?

This book answers the question that moviegoers find themselves asking after watching the newest Bond movies — possible or impossible? Most chapters are wrapped around a Bond gadget — whether it’s his cars, his explosives, or his super secret messages. Other chapters delve into the origins of Mr. Bond – the world of real spies – or the plausibility of a memorable villains’ psychopathic plans. (Could you, in fact, build a headquarter inside a volcano?) Whether Bond’s adventures are in the air or under sea, our authors discover if there’s fact behind the fiction.

There are plenty of movie trivia lists (“Who was the best James Bond?”, “The Bond Cars,” “The 00 Secret Agents”), as well as an introduction by Raymond Benson, the author of several 007 novels. Benson is a Bond addict who, like this book’s reader, wonders if a gondola can turn into a hydrofoil. Additionally, simple diagrams explain several difficult concepts, such as lift (on a chapter about flying cars).

  3. Caterina Murino On Casino Royale And Daniel Craig

    By Devin Zydel on 2006-08-09

Entertainment Weekly has posted a brand new interview with Caterina Murino, who plays the character ‘Solange’ in Casino Royale.

Below are snippets of the interview:

Entertainment Weekly: It’s ironic that you landed the role of horsewoman Solange, since a horse almost caused you to blow your audition.

Caterina Murino: It was very funny because the day before, I had an accident with a horse. I was preparing for an Italian movie, and I fell down. I broke a rib on my right side. I was in the hospital. I was completely under drugs. I went there to the casting, and I couldn’t walk. It was unusual; the Bond girl is so full of energy, and I can’t walk! But Martin Campbell called me back to go to London and do the same scene with him. And I got the role.

    What is Solange like?

Solange is not a typical Bond girl because she doesn’t have an action scene. I have only the scene with the horse and the bikini on the beach. I don’t try to kill James Bond. I tried to give some humanity to Solange. A lot of women have been hit by their husbands. I take revenge by sleeping with James Bond. Nice revenge! If all women who’ve been hit by their husbands can resolve in that way, it would be very nice.

Are you worried about the possible career jinx of the Bond girl role?

To not kill my career as an actress after James Bond, I must make the right choice for my next movie. I’m very glad to be a Bond girl. I’m very glad to be a part of history. I’ll be very glad, when I am 70 years old, to say to my child I was a Bond girl. But after the 17th of November, the page will turn, and I hope to be a normal European, international actress.

    Entertainment Weekly

Murino goes on to explain how critics of Daniel Craig will be quite surprised when the premiere of Casino Royale rolls around, saying: ‘He’s so violent, and we never see James Bond violent. So modern. It’s completely different from the 20 movies before.’

She also explains how she had to prepare for the role and how being a Bond girl will affect her role as a goodwill ambassador for AMREF. Click here to read the entire interview.

  4. Rittenhouse Casino Royale Details

    By Devin Zydel on 2006-08-09

Details have been released on the upcoming release from Rittenhouse card sets for the newest James Bond 007 film, Casino Royale.

As posted on the SciFiHobby forums, a different approach will be taken in regards to Casino Royale. Steve Charendoff posts that a ‘Mega-Bond’ set is planned. It will include many cards from Daniel Craig’s first Bond film, but also elements from the twenty previous 007 films.

What is also different is that the set is not planned for release around the film’s premiere in November, but rather the DVD release in March 2007. ‘We will inevitably have more autographs, more costume cards, more prop cards, more, more, more, because right now a lot of these elements are simply not available to us,’ says Steve Charendoff. Visit the SciFiHobby forums for all the details.

  5. Just In From Our Man In Japan:

    By @mrpauldunphy on 2006-08-09

We love to have our fingers in pies worldwide here at CommanderBond.Net, and this little beauty of a flyer from Japan has just arrived courtesy of CBn reader Christopher Domitter. It features the “illuminated eyes” artwork as previously seen at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year, and clearly shows Craig’s Bond sporting an Omega Seamaster Professional wristwatch. Christopher describes the flyer:

These kinds of flyers are pretty standard, and come out months prior to a release. In addition, during actual release the Japanese still produce beautiful high quality movie brochures, the likes of which I have never seen in my native Canada.

Below left is a scan of the front of the flyer, scanned to actual size (Japanese B5). You can clearly see below Casino Royale in Roman letters is the the title of the film in Japanese (katakana script):

    Test Pic

FRONT: “My, what lovely eyes you have, Mr Bond.”

    Test Pic

BACK: “My, what lovely scars you have, Mr Bond.”

Christopher is a Canadian Bond fan who has lived in Yokohama, Japan for sixteen years and he has kindly provided a summary translation of the reverse of the flyer (below right) for those who haven’t taken a Double First in Oriental Languages at Cambridge:

(Saying that though, apparently neither has Bond)

Top headline: “The story about James Bond before he became 007…” (with supporting text explaining how this is the first time in the series that we will see a “human Bond”, who has a past that nobody has ever known …” etc.

The blue box insert outlines “The 7 conditions to receive 00 status…” which are as follows:

    1. You don’t fear death, and won’t give into torture
    2. You have Olympic level shooting skills
    3. Even if you double-cross your own parents, you will never double-cross the organization
    4. You have knowledge that would surprise even a scholar, and a sense of humour that would make even a bad girl grin
    5. You have the sociability of a lamb, but remain a lone wolf
    6. You have the highest level of experience with alcohol, gambling, cars and food.
    7. You can fall in love but you can never love.

The yellow headlines at the bottom:
    -“What does ’00’ mean?”
-“The actor for Bond has changed!”
-“The intelligence service Bond belongs to actually exists!”
-“John F. Kennedy loved the original novels!”
    -“Bond’s new ultra high-end car!”
-“It’s the age of the woman spy!” (Judi Dench blurb…)

The list at the bottom left beside Daniel’s photo is the names of all the Bond actors.

The official Casino Royale website blog has been updated by ‘Yarborough.’ Instead of coverage on one of the characters or sequences in Casino Royale, this report takes notice of the recent fire at Pinewood Studios.

Previously used in many Bond films such as The Spy Who Loved Me, The World Is Not Enough, and Die Another Day, details on the exact cause of the fire are still to be determined says Yarborough.

The 007 stage was most recently used for recreating a Venice set for closing sequences in the film.

  10. The Bond 50

    By Jim on 2006-08-07

“Give the people what they want…”

CBn’s Member Survey: The Best Bond Bits

During July 2006, CBn ran an online survey to establish what its forum members consider to be the “Best of Bond”; moments that typify Bond for them, or perhaps moments personal to them and standing out in their memories.

With over 6,000 forum members and the books, the films, the videogames to choose from, the potential for a rich and varied selection was evident.

    And so it proved!

And the survey went beyond even CBn’s expectations as forum members proved themselves—yet again—discerning, witty, considerate and thoughtful in explaining why they had chosen as they did.

For example, which scenes are being described here?

“If they wanted to make a statement about the glory days being back, it’s hard to think of anything more they could have done other than… no, it IS hard to think of anything more they could have done. All your Terminators and Lethal Weapons and Die Hards never did this, and that’s because only Bond could. And he sees them all off within seconds of the film starting. The guv’nor’s back. Fantastic.”

    or…

“Incredible stuntwork; film after film they come up with something amazing. This is one of the best, probably the best.”

    or even…

“Everything they knew about making James Bond films went into this chase and it shows.”

    Why wait to find out?

    The

    Numbers 49 – 40

    Numbers 39 – 30

    Numbers 29 – 20

    Numbers 19 – 11

    Numbers 10 – 6

    Numbers 5, 4, 3, 2, 1!

Remember, if you want your say, join up to the CBn Forums and watch out for further surveys.

And if you join up now, you can get your chance to vote for Number 50!

    Bond Moment Number 50

Will your choice be that 50th Best Bond bit?

Huge thanks for taking part to those who did; for those who did not, enjoy anyway.
