  1. Another Way To Drink?

    By Matt Weston on 2008-09-12

Closing off what’s been a thrilling week for James Bond fans is a guardian.co.uk exclusive that’s currently the talk of the CommanderBond.net Forums.

    Jack White

    Jack White

The website’s media wing has landed a first look at Coca-Cola’s new advertisement, a 007 marketing tie-in for Quantum of Solace. The 60-second commercial is a nod to the James Bond series’ stylised opening credit sequences.

Most intriguing, though, is the news that Jack White – one half of the duet performing the Quantum theme song, “Another Way To Die” – composed the music for the ad. What remained unclear, though, was whether or not the commercial’s music is, in fact, an instrumental version of “Another Way To Die” – until now.

    Alicia Keys

Guardian.co.uk’s headline reads “Coca-Cola launches ad featuring Jack White’s Quantum of Solace music”, even though the article goes on to state that “White has also collaborated with Alicia Keys on the Quantum of Solace theme tune, ‘Another Way To Die'”, implying it’s another song all together.

Since it was published on guardian.co.uk, the news spread to other media outlets. NME.com claimed that the music is, indeed, the White/Keys collaboration, though the source of this confirmation remained unclear. Empire Online, meanwhile, says the track is “a sort of spin on [the Quantum of Solace] theme”.

Additionally, copies of the video have been pulled from YouTube, “due to a copyright claim by Sony Pictures Entertainment”, giving credence to the possibility the track is “Another Way To Die” after all.

CBn understands from a music industry source that the commercial’s soundtrack may be a segment of the instrumental portion of the song. “Another Way To Die” was delivered earlier this month and Sony BMG is planning a massive media launch. The song is expected to hit radio at the end of September.

In the meantime, check out the Coke Zero commercial at guardian.co.uk.

In other theme song news, music blog Spyder’s Random Things lists the length of both versions of “Another Way To Die” (regular and instrumental) as 4:23, slightly longer than Chris Cornell’s “You Know My Name”.

Keep your browsers tuned to CBn for the most up-to-date James Bond news on the web.

    Update (13 Sep, 2008)

Prefix Magazine claim to have received the following statement from Jack White’s management:

“Jack White was commissioned by Sony Pictures to write a theme song for the James Bond film Quantum Of Solace, not for Coca Cola. Any other use of the song is based on decisions made by others, not by Jack White. We are disappointed that you first heard the song in a co-promotion for Coke Zero, rather than in its entirety.”

They all feature DTS 5.1 surround sound, and each feature loads of new extras including “never before seen footage” and “Top Secret Files” on “The Bond Women” and “Exotic Locations.” In addition, former 007 Sir Roger Moore has recorded audio commentaries for all of his seven James Bond films.

Included are shots of the main menus on both discs for many of the films, as well as shots from the 007 Mission Control, Image Database, Mission Dossier, and many more sections. New Certificates

A View To A Kill, GoldenEye, and Tomorrow Never Dies were all released with new certificates.

A View To A Kill: 12 (Previously PG) The back cover of the A View To A Kill ‘Ultimate Edition’ DVD states: ‘Some of the added value material has rated this film a 12’

GoldenEye: UNCUT / 15 (Previously 12) As collected on the IMDb, GoldenEye has had an interesting history with the censors on both sides of the Atlantic. The headbutts featured during the battles between Xenia Onatopp and James Bond, as well as Bond and Alec Trevelyan had all been removed for the UK release. The US release (which features a PG-13 rating) reportedly trims down the shooting of Trevelyan during the pre-title sequence, the scene of the attack on Severnaya by Xenia, as well as her own death.

Tomorrow Never Dies: UNCUT / 15 (Previously 12) Originally carrying a ’12’ certificate when first released in 1997, the IMDb reports that some footage (roughly six seconds worth), which included the throwing stars on the Stealth Ship, as well as Bond hitting a man’s face with his boot, were cut to qualify for the rating.

    Cover Artwork (2006 Release)

The front covers feature the James Bond actor in the middle right panel, while often a Bond girl and/or prominent location are featured on the left. The top and bottom panels contain the title of the film in the original font as well as other scenes and characters from the respective film. Click here for high-res photographs of the front and back covers.

    US Box Set Cover Art

Each James Bond film was originally (as part of the four boxed sets) released in a slim DVD case (most often seen as part of the release of television shows on DVD)–not a fold-out design. The collectible booklets that accompany each film are included in the boxed set. Front and back cover artwork is the same as the UK editions.

Earlier this year, CommanderBond.net reported on the ‘Bond Bound: Ian Fleming and The Art of Cover Design’ exhibition, which marked the Fleming centenary with a look back at the cover artwork that has graced the 007 novels throughout the past 50 years.

The exhibition first opened at London’s Fleming Collection and then moved to Edinburgh’s City Art Centre (where it will continue at until 14 September).

Next month will see the ‘Bond Bound’ exhibition make a stop at Bonhams Galleries in New York and then Los Angeles, California the following month to coincide with the US release of the latest James Bond film, Quantum of Solace.

Several other worldwide stops, including Tokyo and Paris, will also follow for the exhibition. The full line-up is included in the press release:

JAMES BOND EXHIBITION CELEBRATING THE CENTENARY OF IAN FLEMING’S BIRTH ON SHOW AT BONHAMS INTERNATIONALLY

Over the next year Bonhams, the international fine art auction house, will be partnering Ian Fleming Publications in a prestigious international exhibition that celebrates the birth of James Bond’s creator, Ian Fleming.

The exhibition, entitled ‘Bond Bound’ will showcase an array of the legendary book covers for different editions of the Bond books from different eras. Bonhams will host the exhibition in a number of key locations, provide marketing and press support, and host a series of private view receptions in various locations. The exhibition will be staged in 11 different cities around the world during the coming year at venues provided by Bonhams or Flemings:

    1. London – April-June 08 – Flemings
    2. Edinburgh – July-September 08 – Flemings
    3. New York – October 08 – Bonhams
    4. Los Angeles – November 08 – Bonhams
    5. Hong Kong – December 08 – Flemings
    6. Shanghai – January 09 (TBC)
    7. Tokyo – February 09 (TBC)
    8. Dubai – April 09 (TBC)
    9. Paris – May 09 – Bonhams
    10. Geneva – June 09
    11. Amsterdam – July 09 – Bonhams

The Exhibition in New York in October at the Bonhams Galleries will coincide with the worldwide launch in the UK of the new James Bond film Quantum of Solace and at Bonhams in Los Angeles in November it will coincide with the USA film launch.

Based on the artwork of James Bond book covers, the exhibition is a collaboration between The Fleming Collection and Ian Fleming Publications working closely with Ian Fleming’s worldwide publishing partners. Previously unseen archive material will be featured including fascinating personal letters and manuscript material from Ian Fleming. The Exhibition’s decorative value is enhanced by a selection of iconic film posters.

Selina Skipworth, Keeper of the Art at The Fleming Collection who is curating the exhibition, says: “The covers of Bond novels stretching back more than half a century provide a fascinating snapshot of society’s shifting attitude to sex, feminism and the changing international political climate.”

Ian Fleming’s life was a fascinating backdrop for his stories about 007. Born in 1908, the grandson of the founder of Flemings, Ian was educated at Eton and after a brief period at the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst he went abroad to further his education. In 1931 having failed to get an appointment in the Foreign Office he joined Reuters News Agency. During WWII he was personal assistant to the Director of Naval Intelligence rising to the rank of Commander. This experience gave him first-hand knowledge of secret operations. After the war he became Foreign Manager for Kemsley Newspapers. He built his house Goldeneye in Jamaica and there at the age of 44 he wrote Casino Royale, the first of his novels featuring Commander James Bond. By the time of his death the James Bond books had sold 40 million copies.

The charity, ‘Room to Read’ which builds schools and libraries for girls in Third World countries will be a beneficiary of the Exhibition. The charity is headed by John Wood who has links to Bill Clinton and other VIPs.

The Imperial War Museum are hosting an exhibition explaining Fleming’s wartime experience which provided his insight into the life of Agent 007. This exhibition will run to Jan 09.

Keep visiting the CBn main page for the most up-to-date and complete coverage of all the 007-related events going on throughout the Ian Fleming centenary year.

  7. 007 In New York?

    By Matt Weston on 2008-09-11

Variety columnist Liz Smith may have unearthed the very first piece of news regarding Bond 23.

In her latest column, she claims James Bond producer Barbara Broccoli and 007 himself, Daniel Craig, were spotted dining at Primola restaurant in New York, where they revealed the location will feature in the follow-up to Quantum of Solace.

    Smith writes…

WHO WAS that blond stunner who froze forks mid-air at the posh Primola eatery in N.Y.? Oh yes indeed, it was Daniel Craig, 007 himself. The studly Daniel was accompanied by his producer Babara Broccoli. (She is the daughter of Albert “Cubby” Broccoli, who co-produced all the James Bond films until his death in 1996. Barbara took over and now has a “license to film.”) Daniel and Barbara talked about the next Bond epic, part of which will be filmed — for the very first time! — in New York. Primola itself will have a little cameo. Maybe Daniel just wanted to see if the restaurant could handle those shoulders of his. The Bond film ready for release this year is the oddly titled Quantum of Solace.

While wrong on the New York debut claim (the city featured in 1973’s Live and Let Die), Smith’s snippet may prove interesting down the line.

Bond 23 is pencilled in for a 2010 release date.

  9. 'Quantum of Solace' Public Premiere To Take Place At London Film Festival

    By Matt Weston on 2008-09-10

Quantum of Solace will receive its public premiere at the 52nd London Film Festival, reports BBC News.

The film will screen at the Odeon West End on 29 October, immediately after the movie’s world premiere, which will take place at the nearby Odeon Leicester Square.

It will be the first time a James Bond film has featured in the festival’s line-up.

“It’s great news for us,” London Film Festival artistic director Sandra Hebron said, adding the public premiere’s timing was “very serendipitous”.

Other films to open at the festival include Ron Howard’s Frost/Nixon and Oliver Stone’s W..
