  2. 'Sean Connery: Neither Shaken Nor Stirred' Slated For April Release In US

    By Devin Zydel on 2009-01-07

Following up a November 2008 release in the UK, Andrew Yule’s biography Sean Connery: Neither Shaken Nor Stirred is now scheduled for a US release.

The 408-page paperback, published by Little, Brown Book Group, will hit bookshelves on 1 April 2009, retailing for $12.95. James Bond fans can currently pre-order at discounted price from Amazon.com:

This is a biography of the actor, Sean Connery, who was born and brought up in an Edinburgh tenement, the son of a van driver and a charlady. Having left school at 13 and had a variety of jobs, including brickie and milkman, he spent three years in the Navy until invalided out with ulcers, and took up body-building and won a bronze medal in a Mr Universe contest.

Deciding on an acting career, he made his film debut in 1956 and the major break came with his appearance in the first James Bond film, Dr No. The book traces Connery’s career and also examines the contradictions of the man himself – one who is renowned for watching the pennies but gives generously to charities; a dedicated Scottish Nationalist who lives as an unrepentant tax exile; a star who sues film companies whilst being admired throughout the industry for professionalism, hard work and commitment; a sex symbol barely touched by scandal.

Unfortunately, as reported by the Los Angeles Times, the 22nd James Bond film was knocked out of the competition today after the first round of cuts were made.

Quantum was among the eight films cut from the standings after the Academy’s Visual Effects Branch Executive Committee narrowed the original list of 15 films down to seven. The remaining films include:

    • Australia
    • The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
    • The Dark Knight
    • Hellboy II: The Golden Army
    • Iron Man
    • Journey to the Center of the Earth
    • The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor

The list will be narrowed down further on Thursday, 15 January when all members of the branch will be invited to view 15-minute excerpts from each of the seven shortlisted films. Following the screenings, the members will vote to nominate three films for final Oscar consideration.

Final nominations will be announced on Thursday, 22 January 2009. The ceremony for the 81st Academy Awards is scheduled for Sunday, 22 February 2009.

    Mission 6: Construction Site

    Quantum of Solace

This sixth mission differs from the previous ones in that it’s a pure chase sequence, with no cell phones to search for or enemy attackers to worry about. The trick is to stay up with the bomber at all times–falling too far behind will eventually result in you failing the mission.

As the mission begins, climb over the pipes ahead and turn left to proceed to the crane. You can sprint up the first portion of the crane, but as you near the top a balancing section kicks in, so be wary of that. Head inside the construction area when you reach the top and turn to your left to view a small crawlspace you can enter. Exit out of the opposite end and then look to your right. There’s a section of the drywall with a small crack in it–so just as James Bond does in Casino Royale–run right through it.

At this point, you get knocked about by a small explosion. There’s a collapsed floor to your right that allows you to move back up a level. Move across the floorboards to make your way to the pulley at the end holding up the suspended pipes. Activate it to release the pipes and simultaneously bring you up to the same level as the bomber towards the top of the crane.

Move towards where the bomber was positioned and jump to the lower crane when indicated. Proceed through a balancing section once more and then jump to the lower rooftop. Move down the stairs. To your left is an elevated platform. Press the indicated button to rip through the cables to quickly head down and then chase after the bomber’s white van. Mission Complete.

  6. Daniel Craig Attends 'Defiance' Premiere In London

    By Devin Zydel on 2009-01-06

Earlier today marked the UK premiere of Edward Zwick’s war drama Defiance, starring Daniel Craig.

Craig, along with girlfriend Satsuki Mitchell, co-stars Liev Schreiber and Jamie Bell, and other celebrities present, walked the red carpet at the Odeon Leicester Square in London.

Photographs from the event can be viewed online at just jared.

In the film (based on true events), Craig, Bell and Schreiber play three Jewish brothers who escape from Nazi-occupied Poland and join Russian resistance fighters, helping to build a village to protect themselves and help others who are fleeing.

‘I knew there was some resistance,’ said Craig in an interview with MTV. ‘I’d read about pockets of resistance, but never in any detail. So when this came along, I was astounded. Once I’d read the book, learning more about it and learning how successful they were, [it] was inspiring.’

Defiance went on limited release on 31 December in the US. A wide release will follow on 9 January in the UK and on the 16th stateside.

'Quantum of Solace' Game Box Art

    Quantum of Solace

As the mission begins, immediately begin chasing after the bomber by following him to the small shack past the snake/mongoose fight and take out the approaching enemies. Work your way to the beach area and take cover in the caf´ while you take out the enemies positioned on the beach area.

Head left down the beach towards the dock, but be wary of the parked pick-up truck with a machine gunner firing at you. Fire at the suspended explosive tank above the truck to take out this enemy. As you proceed forward, watch out for two additional enemies that rush out of a nearby building to your left. There’s another explosive tank positioned by that door, so as soon as they run out, fire away. Once they’re taken care of, head inside and exit via the screen door towards the right.

Ascend the ladder to your left and move along the main pathway until you reach another building. Inside is a yellow crate that holds a powerful 8-CAT. After you equip it, head up the nearby ladder.

At this point, the three-stage firefight commences. While taking care not to fire at Carter, protect your position by taking cover and firing at the approaching guards from the middle and left. There are several well-placed explosive barrels to fire at in order to assist you in taking out the enemies on the ground floor. The second stage of this fight begins when enemies start approaching you by leaping along the nearby buildings to your right. Head over there, while taking cover, and quickly take them out before they reach your position and begin firing at you point blank.

Eventually a pick-up truck with a machine gunner will approach. Take cover as he fires away and he’ll soon drive off, leaving you unharmed. A few more enemies will appear on the scene, so take them out and take cover when the truck returns again.

Ahead of you, you’ll notice that the building ahead now has a large explosive tank in your firing range. Shoot at it to detonate an explosion which simultaneously takes out the remaining enemies as well as that truck with the machine gunner. Move down to the lower floor and exit out of the new hole in the wall caused by the explosion. Carter waves you on after the bomber, so start following him to the construction site. Mission Complete.

  10. Daniel Craig Comments On 'Quantum' Success

    By Devin Zydel on 2009-01-04

It has just been a few weeks since the worldwide promotional extravaganza for Quantum of Solace wrapped up and now Daniel Craig is once again promoting yet another film: the war drama Defiance, which has just gone on limited release in the United States.

Sitting down for an interview with The Times, Craig spoke about his penchant for experimenting with film roles and how he chooses one over another.

    Daniel Craig is James Bond

    Daniel Craig is James Bond

With his second James Bond film still playing in theatres around the world, the box office success quickly came up as a converstation point.

After being told that Quantum of Solace had recently passed the $500 million mark worldwide, Craig responded: ‘I wouldn’t know $500 million if it sat on my face. But it would probably be quite nice if it sat on my face. I know that, when it comes down to it, these films are about box office, but the moment I start thinking about the figures, I’ll be stuffed–though maybe I won’t be saying that in a year’s time, when I’ve spent everything.’

While his debut as 007 in Casino Royale scored higher overall when it came to reviews by the critics, the appeal of Quantum as judged by those box office numbers puts these two films on roughly the same playing field (Royale ended up with a $594 million take, while Quantum is at $540 million and climbing).

Craig stated that the success of this latest Bond film is even more satisfying than when Casino Royale was certified an overwhelming success upon its 2006 release.

    'Quantum of Solace'

    Quantum of Solace

He said: ‘The first film was a huge punt, although I think if it had failed miserably, I could have walked away with my head held high and said, “Well, I gave it a go.” But the fact was that it wasn’t. It was a success, and in a way that nobody could have predicted. Quantum was about keeping it interesting, relevant, and the only way I could think about doing that was just to throw myself headlong into it. So I know the work we put in. We didn’t have a complete script, so Marc [Forster] and I had to batter it into shape, to find the story we wanted to tell.’

As for the criticisms that Quantum was too dark and humourless for a Bond film, Craig said: ‘Well, I nicked a lot of the ideas about who Bond is from Ian Fleming. But the point is, we did the movie we had to do to finish the story off, and comedy and lightness weren’t relevant. This was a story about loyalty, about friendship, about who you can trust. Gag-writing wasn’t at the top of the list.’

As for Bond 23, seemingly anything is possible now that the RoyaleQuantum storyline has seemingly come to a close.

‘I love the idea of putting Moneypenny in the film,’ he said. ‘I’m dead keen to do it. And Q.’ However, Craig stressed that there needed to be some characterization to these two MI6 favourites. He said: ‘I work from the premise that there are millions and millions of people out there who never saw one of the earlier Bond movies. So they don’t understand the martini gag. Or the Moneypenny gag, which is a gag–it had ceased to be a character. So, let’s find out who she is. We can have fun doing that. And, don’t get me wrong, I’m up for a submarine base, as long as the gag works. The problem is that Austin Powers screwed everything up. He exploded the genre. Did I just say that? I did.’

According to producer Michael G. Wilson, preliminary script work is scheduled to commence this month, so keep your eyes on CommanderBond.net for all the latest Bond 23 coverage as it becomes available.
