  3. Olga Kurylenko Talks 'Quantum of Solace' On Fox Morning Show

    By Devin Zydel on 2008-10-18

The Quantum of Solace PR machine is definitely kicking into high gear.

In addition to yesterday’s appearance by Daniel Craig on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Bond girl Olga Kurylenko appeared on a Fox 11 morning show to speak about her role as ‘Camille’ and how she managed to get involved in the world of James Bond.

Asked if she was ready to be a household name once Quantum of Solace goes on wide release, Kurylenko said: ‘I don’t know, I don’t think you can ever be ready. It just happens. You know, I didn’t expect all of this. I really liked Casino Royale, and I thought “Wow, that’s great that the movies have changed and the Bond girls are interesting”.’

She also scoffed at the idea of a “James Bond curse” related to the numerous on-set accidents: ‘I thought it was such nonsense. Come on, you’re shooting an action film, sure there’s going to be accidents! You know, people got hurt, but everyone’s alive at the end of the day.’

  5. All Eyes On 'Quantum of Solace' UK Launch

    By Devin Zydel on 2008-10-18

As the floodgates opened following the first major press screening of Quantum of Solace yesterday, a lot of people are keeping a close eye on the UK launch of the film.

    Daniel Craig is James Bond

A new Variety article cites the importance of the film’s 31 October debut in the UK, following it’s world premiere two days earlier on the 29th. Quantum of Solace also opens in France and Sweden on the 31st with the rest of its worldwide releases following primarily in the first two weeks of November.

‘I think it’s absolutely crucial that it starts off in a positive way, because it will affect the rest of the world,’ said director Marc Forster.

Following in the footsteps of 2006’s Casino Royale will hardly be an easy task, however. Daniel Craig’s debut 007 film rewrote the Bond recordbook when it came to box office takings and managed to captivate critics and fans alike–resulting in overwhelmingly positive reviews and BAFTA nominations (including a Best Actor mention for Craig).

  8. James Bond's Newest Nemesis Is Sworn To Secrecy

    By Devin Zydel on 2008-10-17

    WARNING: MAJOR SPOILERS

Back in April, CommanderBond.net reported that a new cast member had joined the Quantum of Solace production.

British actor Simon Kassianides joined the cast as the mysterious character named Yusef. While details were kept to absolute minimum regarding the specifics of his role, we exclusively learned that he has a confrontation with Daniel Craig’s James Bond at the conclusion of the film and is seen carrying an Algerian Love Knot–immediately sparking speculation that Vesper Lynd’s boyfriend will indeed turn up in this film.

A brief snippet of this scene was screened earlier this month before journalists as part of a 10-minute package of Quantum of Solace footage.

Kassianides was recently interviewed by The Times, but this Bond baddie remained tight-lipped as ever; revealing only that his role is ‘pivotal, charming, and quite dark’.

That didn’t stop the interviewer from trying to get every possible detail, however. When asked about the eventual meeting between Bond and Yusef, Kassianides said: ‘Well, we don’t dance, and that’s for sure.’ To the follow-up question asking if it’d be fair to say they fight, he responded: ‘No, it wouldn’t be fair to say anything really. It is something that a lot of people are excited about, and it’s integral to the story. You want these two people to meet, you want Bond to find me, but I can’t say more than that.’

The 28-year old actor does mention that the film has been a dream come true for him. He received a call from his agent last winter while in Barcelona: ‘Bond are looking at a handful of actors today, and they want to see you! Be there in 90 minutes!’

After arriving at the production, Kassianides was immediately struck by how friendly and creative those behind the film actually were, despite being such a large operation. ‘Daniel Craig was completely humble and had none of that big star bollocks about him,’ he said, and was allowed input into his own character by director Marc Forster: ‘It was like, at one stage I said, I wanted to, er, eh, it’s so hard for me to talk about this,’ he stops himself, preventing a revelation.

Moving the discussion to one of the film’s massive sets, he continued: ‘The only time you realise the size and the scale of what you’re in, is when you’re standing in the middle of the set opposite Daniel Craig and you’re asked to go for a take. At that point you just look around you, at all the, er, eh, well, I can’t really talk about that, but anyway, you realise that you’re involved in this thing that is just massive!’

A question regarding his return for Bond 23 almost trips him up, but not quite. ‘I er, I eh… I know my main concern is really not to do or say anything that would jeopardise the enjoyment of the movie. But honestly, I’m not involved that deeply in the machinations of the franchise to know what their plans are … the [film’s] title refers to the smallest amount of love needed for a relationship, but it can be interpreted, in a film which is about revenge, as the death of someone’s love or, er, eh, I dunno, it’s all just going to be great!’

In conclusion, despite some major Quantum of Solace spoilers getting out, it appears those surrounding this character are remaining firmly underwraps.

  10. 'Quantum of Solace' Production Pays Homage To Ken Adam

    By Devin Zydel on 2008-10-16

During the process of shooting Quantum of Solace, director Marc Forster revealed his appreciation for many of the early James Bond films, citing the production design by Ken Adam as one of the hallmarks of the series.

In a new Variety article, Forster explains how he tried to pay homage to Adam’s visually stunning sets in the design of this latest 007 film.

‘I wanted to return to the stylish look of the early Bond films by production designer Ken Adam,’ he said.

007 at the Barbican, back when Quantum of Solace was known as Bond 22

Production designer Dennis Gassner, who replaced longstanding crew member Peter Lamont on this film, said Daniel Craig as Bond was integral in the process of creating Quantum‘s more modernistic and organic style.

He said: ‘I had to find a new place in the world for Bond to be Bond on his journey. I said to Marc that the only thing that I had to hold onto was Daniel. And what is that? It’s this incredibly angular, chiseled, textured face and blue eyes. It was so simple that it was right in front of us. So I really created a pattern language based on that theory and Marc’s… sense of style and design.’

As hinted by the film’s trailers and leaked production photos, several typical Bond locations, such as M’s office, have gotten a complete makeover. ‘I wanted to show London the way nobody’s ever seen it before,’ said Gassner. This included shooting at Barbican at the very beginning of production way back in January.

On the new MI6 office, Gassner said: ‘I wanted to put Judi [Dench] in a really smart room because she’s the embodiment of MI6. I wanted to see her [figuratively] inside a Macintosh computer and give her the opportunity to use her mind and her voice, so what she says, she gets: “Where’s Bond?” She has easy access in the stainless metal-and-glass world that she’s in.’

However, some longstanding Bond traditions were maintained on Quantum of Solace, including taking advantage of the massive 007 Stage for some of the film’s major action sequences.

‘[After] they rebuilt the stage and ‘Mamma Mia!’ actually shot there, we inhabited it again, ironically, on this film for a big fire sequence,’ said producer Barbara Broccoli. ‘So we got through the sequence without incident, fortunately, but on the backlot, we had a [second] fire involved on one of the exteriors where we were shooting. And there was a report that we had something burn down, which actually was not correct. We deliberately set it on fire.’
