According to a new Screen Daily report, Daniel Craig’s second James Bond entry ranked as the year’s top earner in the country, with a $42.5 million gross (31.5 million €).

The 007 film, along with several other box office successes such as Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa and Rabbit Without Ears, contributed to a 3.5% year-on-year increase in takings.

Furthermore, German film-goers bought 123.6 million tickets in the last 12 months, up 1.57% on 2007’s 121.7 million total.

Last month, it was reported that Quantum of Solace had boosted the country’s box office in the fourth quarter of 2008. The film’s $42.5 million total ranks it the third best for Bond worldwide, behind the the US and UK grosses, respectively.

It has been a special thrill to work on the Bond films, and we couldn’t be more excited by the success of Quantum of Solace.”

  6. 'Quantum' Fails To Make Oscar Cut For Visual Effects Nomination

    By Devin Zydel on 2009-01-07

In mid-December, CommanderBond.net reported that Quantum of Solace had made the shortlist of films in contention to receive an Academy Award nomination in the Visual Effects category.

    'Quantum of Solace'

    Quantum of Solace

Unfortunately, as reported by the Los Angeles Times, the 22nd James Bond film was knocked out of the competition today after the first round of cuts were made.

Quantum was among the eight films cut from the standings after the Academy’s Visual Effects Branch Executive Committee narrowed the original list of 15 films down to seven. The remaining films include:

    • Australia
    • The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
    • The Dark Knight
    • Hellboy II: The Golden Army
    • Iron Man
    • Journey to the Center of the Earth
    • The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor

The list will be narrowed down further on Thursday, 15 January when all members of the branch will be invited to view 15-minute excerpts from each of the seven shortlisted films. Following the screenings, the members will vote to nominate three films for final Oscar consideration.

Final nominations will be announced on Thursday, 22 January 2009. The ceremony for the 81st Academy Awards is scheduled for Sunday, 22 February 2009.

  7. Daniel Craig Attends 'Defiance' Premiere In London

    By Devin Zydel on 2009-01-06

Earlier today marked the UK premiere of Edward Zwick’s war drama Defiance, starring Daniel Craig.

Craig, along with girlfriend Satsuki Mitchell, co-stars Liev Schreiber and Jamie Bell, and other celebrities present, walked the red carpet at the Odeon Leicester Square in London.

Photographs from the event can be viewed online at just jared.

In the film (based on true events), Craig, Bell and Schreiber play three Jewish brothers who escape from Nazi-occupied Poland and join Russian resistance fighters, helping to build a village to protect themselves and help others who are fleeing.

‘I knew there was some resistance,’ said Craig in an interview with MTV. ‘I’d read about pockets of resistance, but never in any detail. So when this came along, I was astounded. Once I’d read the book, learning more about it and learning how successful they were, [it] was inspiring.’

Defiance went on limited release on 31 December in the US. A wide release will follow on 9 January in the UK and on the 16th stateside.

  8. Daniel Craig Comments On 'Quantum' Success

    By Devin Zydel on 2009-01-04

It has just been a few weeks since the worldwide promotional extravaganza for Quantum of Solace wrapped up and now Daniel Craig is once again promoting yet another film: the war drama Defiance, which has just gone on limited release in the United States.

Sitting down for an interview with The Times, Craig spoke about his penchant for experimenting with film roles and how he chooses one over another.

    Daniel Craig is James Bond

    Daniel Craig is James Bond

With his second James Bond film still playing in theatres around the world, the box office success quickly came up as a converstation point.

After being told that Quantum of Solace had recently passed the $500 million mark worldwide, Craig responded: ‘I wouldn’t know $500 million if it sat on my face. But it would probably be quite nice if it sat on my face. I know that, when it comes down to it, these films are about box office, but the moment I start thinking about the figures, I’ll be stuffed–though maybe I won’t be saying that in a year’s time, when I’ve spent everything.’

While his debut as 007 in Casino Royale scored higher overall when it came to reviews by the critics, the appeal of Quantum as judged by those box office numbers puts these two films on roughly the same playing field (Royale ended up with a $594 million take, while Quantum is at $540 million and climbing).

Craig stated that the success of this latest Bond film is even more satisfying than when Casino Royale was certified an overwhelming success upon its 2006 release.

    'Quantum of Solace'

    Quantum of Solace

He said: ‘The first film was a huge punt, although I think if it had failed miserably, I could have walked away with my head held high and said, “Well, I gave it a go.” But the fact was that it wasn’t. It was a success, and in a way that nobody could have predicted. Quantum was about keeping it interesting, relevant, and the only way I could think about doing that was just to throw myself headlong into it. So I know the work we put in. We didn’t have a complete script, so Marc [Forster] and I had to batter it into shape, to find the story we wanted to tell.’

As for the criticisms that Quantum was too dark and humourless for a Bond film, Craig said: ‘Well, I nicked a lot of the ideas about who Bond is from Ian Fleming. But the point is, we did the movie we had to do to finish the story off, and comedy and lightness weren’t relevant. This was a story about loyalty, about friendship, about who you can trust. Gag-writing wasn’t at the top of the list.’

As for Bond 23, seemingly anything is possible now that the RoyaleQuantum storyline has seemingly come to a close.

‘I love the idea of putting Moneypenny in the film,’ he said. ‘I’m dead keen to do it. And Q.’ However, Craig stressed that there needed to be some characterization to these two MI6 favourites. He said: ‘I work from the premise that there are millions and millions of people out there who never saw one of the earlier Bond movies. So they don’t understand the martini gag. Or the Moneypenny gag, which is a gag–it had ceased to be a character. So, let’s find out who she is. We can have fun doing that. And, don’t get me wrong, I’m up for a submarine base, as long as the gag works. The problem is that Austin Powers screwed everything up. He exploded the genre. Did I just say that? I did.’

According to producer Michael G. Wilson, preliminary script work is scheduled to commence this month, so keep your eyes on CommanderBond.net for all the latest Bond 23 coverage as it becomes available.
