Although there’s still almost a month to go until Quantum of Solace is released on home video around the world, DVD Talk has gotten their hands on a DVD-R screener copy courtesy of MGM and Fox Home Entertainment and have posted the review online.

Although the video and audio categories are omitted due to the disk being a screener copy, the 22nd James Bond film received an overall advice score of ‘Recommended’.

Film content and replay values were ranked highly, but unfortunately the special features for this two-disc special edition only scored two out of five stars. Reviewer Nick Hartel notes: ‘This stuff might interest some, but there’s no real substance and the replay value of the extras are nil. It seems that a double dip of this film is almost a given, considering the lack of substantial extras.’

    From Russia with Love

From 24 April, a restored version of From Russia with Love is returning to cinemas nationwide, in celebration of the centenary of producer Albert R. ‘Cubby’ Broccoli.

Broccoli formed EON Productions and Danjaq, with Harry Saltzman, to make Dr. No, launching James Bond onto the big screen in 1962. When Saltzman later sold his shares of the two companies to United Artists, Broccoli became sole producer of the Bond films.

From Russia with Love, originally released in 1963, has been digitally restored frame by frame by Lowry Digital Images, the world’s leader in digital restoration and image enhancement. The process involves taking moving pictures that show signs of age and wear, removing the fading, dirt, scratches and other defects that occur over time, and returning them to their original condition.

From Russia with Love, directed by Terence Young, and starring Sean Connery, Robert Shaw and Lotte Lenya, will be opening from 24 April at BFI Southbank (as part of a comprehensive Broccoli season), followed by special screenings at cinemas nationwide.

A car made famous by James Bond is set to create a stir with both car enthusiasts and fans of the secret agent when it comes up for auction shortly.

The Aston Martin DB5 which is identical to the model featured in a number of classic Bond films including Goldfinger, Thunderball, GoldenEye, Tomorrow Never Dies and Casino Royale is being offered for sale at a guide price of £150,000 to £200,000 by leading auctioneers Eddisons at a special on-line auction at http://www.eddisons.com. The iconic car was first registered in February 1964 and has been fully restored to concourse condition by Post Vintage Engineers Ltd during 2006 and 2007 at a cost of £105,000 and has done less than 700 miles since the completion of the restoration project.

  7. Sir Roger Moore Pays Tribute To Pinewood Studios

    By Devin Zydel on 2009-02-15

Sir Roger Moore recently paid tribute to Pinewood Studios–home of the James Bond film series–in a recent edition of The Times.

Reprinted in its entirety at the official Roger Moore website, the former 007 star recounts both the high points of his history with the studio:

    Roger Moore is James Bond

    Roger Moore is James Bond

My next visit, in 1973, was as Jimmy Bond. Cubby had any number of offers to take the series overseas, but no, he said, “Pinewood is my home”. It wasn’t just sentimentality, it was good business sense as the crews always delivered the very best and Cubby loved the environment.

I could always rely on the Pinewood crews to make me look good on screen. Their support was particularly in evidence during any love scenes I filmed. They’d be up in the gantries shouting: “Go on Rog, give ‘er one!”

…as well as the low points:

In July 2006, during my Sunday lunch, I received a call: “Pinewood is on fire.” My heart sank. I then heard that it was the 007 Stage. Within hours it had gone. Cubby was not around any longer, but the studio announced that it would be rebuilt as soon as possible, and it would remain the Albert R. Broccoli 007 Stage.

Along with the good fortune and success, I’ve also seen Pinewood at its lowest ebb. When we went in to shoot Octopussy there was nothing, and I mean nothing, else in the studio. The whole industry was in the doldrums. Word had it that had we not returned to Pinewood it would have closed down.

Click here for Sir Roger’s–now Pinewood’s second oldest resident–full account of working at the studio throughout his career.

  8. Christopher Lee Talks Bond And Beyond

    By Devin Zydel on 2009-02-11

With the James Bond HD season kicking off on Sky Movies, IGN recently had the chance to sit down with actor Christopher Lee to discuss the many villainous characters he has portrayed throughout his career.

In addition to being a cousin of 007 creator Ian Fleming, Lee also acted opposite Roger Moore in 1974’s The Man with the Golden Gun as lead villain Francisco Scaramanga. Before this however, he mentions that Fleming had thought him suitable for the role of Dr. No.

    Christopher Lee

    Christopher Lee

Lee states: ‘Most of the time I saw Ian on the golf course at Royal St George’s in Sandwich, Kent, which he immortalised in Goldfinger. I said congratulations on your book Casino Royale and he said: “I’ve written another one: Dr. No, have you read it?” And I said “Yes. Great characters. Wonderful.” Dr. No was this immensely tall Chinese man with contact lenses which he taps with his steel claws. Ian said, “Well, you’ve played Chinese haven’t you? You are very tall and of course you’ll have to be taller, but would you be interested in playing Dr. No?” I said “My god, I certainly would.” He said he’d talk to the producers. And he did, but too late. By the time he got around to talking to Cubby Broccoli and Harry Saltzman they’d already cast Joseph Wiseman, a very fine actor who is, as far as I know, still alive.’

Flash forward about 10 years and Lee, who had made a very successful career portraying various iconic villains, including Count Dracula, was finally given the opportunity to add Bond villain to his resume.

‘I got a call from Guy Hamilton, whom I’d known for many years, inviting me to lunch at The White Elephant, a showbiz restaurant in Curzon Street,’ Lee said. ‘I had no idea he was going to make The Man with the Golden Gun. He said, “I’m going to give you a script for a James Bond movie”. I thought, “Oh, at last”. He continued: “We’d like you to play Scaramanga”. And I said: “Wasn’t this man a West Indian and kind of a thug? A brute who went around bars where there were caged birds blowing them apart and things like that?” To which he replied: “No, he’s not like that at all. Read the script. It’s much more interesting.” And I did! The answer is of course I liked it very much.

'The Man with the Golden Gun'

The Man with the Golden Gun

Like several of the villains featured in Fleming’s 007 novels, the character of Scaramanga was in fact based on an fellow student at Eton. Lee explains: ‘There was a real Scaramanga. It’s a real name. He was at Eton with Ian who disliked him intensely, so of course, he made him the heavy.’

‘[The character I play] is a great improvement on the character in the book. He’s attractive to women. He has a sense of humour. He’s the dark side of Bond and yet he could be amusing. He was almost like a child in some ways. The way he shoots the cork out of the Champagne bottle, “Aha, this toy!”

To many Bond fans, probably the most famous location featured in The Man with the Golden Gun was the tiny Phuket island, or ‘James Bond Island’, a southern province of Thailand.

Discussing the filming conditions here, Lee said: ‘We weren’t allowed to take wives or anything like that. There was only one woman on the production, the continuity lady. It was pretty primitive to say the least. A very small village which they tried to do up with polished granite floors and so on. Phuket was nothing in those days.’

He continues: ‘Now it’s like Miami. I went back to the island with my wife and it’s covered with stalls and people selling souvenirs. You could hardly see the sand. I was pointing things out to her when a tourist suddenly said: “Aren’t you?”. And I said “No, no, no, I’ve never been here before,” and fled. Otherwise I’d probably still be there signing autographs.’

Head over to IGN for the complete interview, including details on working alongside Hervé Villechaize (Nick Nack) as well as whether or not he’ll resprise his role as Saruman for the forthcoming The Hobbit.

  9. Dame Judi Dench Supports Return Of Moneypenny And Q Characters

    By Devin Zydel on 2009-02-09

Like Daniel Craig before her, Dame Judi Dench has backed plans to bring the characters of Miss Moneypenny and Q back to the James Bond series.

    Dame Judi Dench

    Dame Judi Dench

According to the Lincolnshire Echo, Dame Judi briefly discussed the return of these characters in an interview with the Daily Telegraph. She said: ‘That would be good if it was thought right to bring back those characters. Wouldn’t it be Samantha Bond as Miss Moneypenny and John Cleese as Q. Who else?’

Dame Judi also confirmed her involvement in the forthcoming Bond 23, which will mark her seventh appearance as ‘M’ following her debut in 1995’s GoldenEye. She said: ‘You bet. As M you get to treat this powerful man very, very badly.’

As many 007 fans are aware, the Moneypenny and Q characters were dropped from Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace. Prior to this, Samantha Bond had portrayed the MI6 secretary for all four of Pierce Brosnan’s Bond films and had been quoted as saying that when Brosnan left the series, so would she.

‘If Miss Moneypenny is written in it wouldn’t be me–I left with my Bond,’ she said. ‘I think she’s missed but I am happy that she’s not there because it means I am irreplaceable.’

John Cleese first appeared in the series as ‘R’ in The World is not Enough and then inherited the gadgetmaster role from Desmond Llewellyn for Die Another Day.

What remains unclear at this very early stage is who exactly would portray these characters if they were indeed set to return. Voice your opinion here on the CommanderBond.net Forums.
