  1. Evening Standard interviews Barbara Broccoli

    By Helmut Schierer on 2012-08-16

Seems it’s Bond week at the Standard’s headquarters in Derry Street. That’s the only explanation for the second intriguing article this week, related directly to one half of Bond producers EON. This time it’s Barbara Broccoli who features prominently in a short but interesting interview summary.

Broccoli spoke to the Standard’s Liz Hoggard and had some revealing things to say. So as Cubby Broccoli’s daughter she grew up with so many people talking about James Bond around her she used to believe he was a real person until she was seven; perhaps longer than she believed in Santa. There is no denying with this childhood the woman definitely has Bond in her blood.

So it seemed not only natural she would join the Bond ship in her professional career, but would also become a defining influence, once her father had to hand over the family business. Barbara Broccoli was instrumental in the casting of Craig and defended this decision against fierce criticism from all sides:

“It’s absurd,” she shudders slightly. “I think that’s the trouble with the internet now. Everyone has an equal voice so people read something — supposedly written with great authority — and it’s by a 12-year-old in a little town some place in the United States who’s never seen Daniel Craig, doesn’t know what he’s capable of, and starts this fire. And then it’s given prominence, which is bizarre. Of course we were making the film and we knew what we had, so we just ignored it.”

Which definitely put some perspective back into the matter, and the outcome apparently has proven her right, to the chagrin of countless 12-year-olds in the hinterlands.

Her further comments of course touch the new film ‘Skyfall’ and the respective roles of Dame Judy Dench, Javier Bardem and Daniel Craig in this.

Interestingly, Monday’s controversial report about Michael G Wilson’s comments at a culture seminar isn’t mentioned at all.

  4. Evening Standard – ‘Even the best 007s are not safe, Mr Bond’

    By Helmut Schierer on 2012-08-14

Yesterday’s Evening Standard had one intriguing story on Michael G. Wilson speaking at a culture industry seminar during the Olympic Games in London. Wilson supposedly went on record with claims EON would have no problem to move onward and replace Craig, should the need arise.

    From the article:

Recalling the decision to axe Craig’s predecessor, Wilson said: “Pierce [Brosnan] was well-liked and the grosses were going up. But we knew we had to change things before they started to taper off. Bond is the star. He is bigger than any actor that portrays him.”

Read the entire Evening Standard story here.

While emphasis should be placed on the fact this is in no way the first time EON (or its constituents) seem to contradict earlier statements, it could be speculated this tiny piece of publicly placed information might indicate negotiations about Craig’s future contract have entered a crucial phase.

However, chances are the public will not become much more aware of this beyond what the Standard piece implies.

  6. “New Bond has no heart.” says George Lazenby

    By Matthew Harkin on 2012-08-10

One time Bond actor George Lazenby has criticised the latest James Bond movies for having no heart.

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, the ‘On Her Majesty’s Secret Service’ actor gave his thoughts on current Bond star Daniel Craig.

“He’s a fantastic actor, but [his movies] are more violent, aren’t they? It’s the way our society has gone, You can’t have someone who’s got feelings now. Bond has to be able to shoot someone now and kiss a girl three minutes later. When I did it, it had more heart. There’s no heart to the new Bond.”

An exclusive look at four wild screen-used vehicles from the lethal world of 007, including an interview with their maker.

If you were at Comic-Con this year, you might’ve seen these cars from behind a velvet rope. But Athena Stamos got up-close and personal to declassify the top secrets of not one but four of the most outrageous vehicles James Bond has ever driven (or faced). In celebration of 007’s 50th anniversary on film and the upcoming Blu-ray set, 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment enlisted the help of the Ian Fleming Foundation to display a different Bond car each day of the Con. We even chatted with Andy Smith, builder of some of the vehicles as well as the Tumbler seen in The Dark Knight Rises. For your eyes only in the vid above.

Vehicles covered in this video include the Aston Martin V8 Vantage from The Living Daylights (1987), Q’s Jet-Boat from The World Is Not Enough (1999), a Para-Hawk from The World Is Not Enough, and Zao’s Jaguar XKR from Die Another Day (2002).

A new Star Cars episode premieres every other Thursday. Be sure to follow Star Cars on Facebook for more exclusive content.

A big ‘Thank you’ to Athena Stamos and ‘Star Cars’ for the kind permission to share this here.
