    By jcharter on 2003-01-10

Former Bond composer, Monty Norman, has again teamed up with lyricist Julian More and director John Doyle. This time the three have adapted Kingsley Amis’ classic novel, “Lucky Jim“. Having enjoyed the joint effort put into their first collaboration, “Irma La Douce“, the three decided they should work together on yet another musical. After a lengthy search for suitable material the three finally settled on Amis’ “Lucky Jim“. At present, it is not known when and where the show will debut.

  2. Some DAD DVD Extras Mentioned

    By daniel on 2003-01-09

The latest issue of ‘Timecode’, an UK Home Entertainmen industry trade magazine, features an interview with Vincent Peterson, Marketing Director for MGM Home Entertainment UK, who discusses the DVD release of Die Another Day.

In the magazine Peterson confirms the May release for the DVD in the United Kingdom.

Peterson also talked about some of the extras that may appear on the DVD, they are, however, still tenative. There will be a feautre entitled ‘Equipment Breifing -The Gadgets And Weapons’ and the music video for Madonna’s Die Another Day title song. Peterson also stated that there may be “a first for a Bond dvd, a comprehensive set of deleted scenes with commentary by Lee Tamahori”.

While deleted scenes will add to the DVDs quality there will, presumably, be more extras than the aforementioned. MGM revealed in December that the DVD was likely to have a RRP of £24.99 in the United Kingdom, a price usually given to double-disc releases.

    In late November an extras list surfaced on the Internet which featured two of the three extras mentioned by Peterson;

    • Deleted Scenes with commentary by Director
    • Audio Commentary: Audio Intelligence
    • Audio Commentary: Audio Intelligence 2
    • MI6 Data Stream – trivia tracks with seamless links to featurettes
    • Inside Die Another Day documentary
    • Multi angle action and stunt sequences
    • multi angle view of opening credits
    • Scene evolutions
    • Equipment Briefing
    • Making of documentary 1
    • Making of documentary 2
    • Theatrical trailer
    • TV spot
    • Madonna music video
    • A Day In the Live (MTV Special)

  3. AM DB7 Replacement Revealed

    By daniel on 2003-01-09

The latest issue of AutoCar has featured a spy picture of Aston Martin’s untitled replacement for the Aston Martin DB7.

    CBn Forum Member ‘marktmurphy’ has rendered the pictures of the new Aston Martin, which was photographed with design disguises, to give us this clearer picture;

    Aston Martin’s DB7 Replacement

The new car is reportedly a six litre V12 designed by Ian Callum, who designed the DB7 and the Aston Martin Vanquish.

The new car, along with the recently revealed Aston Martin AMV8 Vantage, is a contendor for James Bond’s car in Bond 21. The DB7 replacement goes into production later this year with a shipping date with the first deliveries of the car expected in mid-2004.

At this stage the AMV8 Vantage seems more likely to feature in Bond 21 due to it being Aston Martin’s new entry-level car. The car company revealed in 2002 that Bond 21 would feature an entry-level car as opposed to a higher level, such as the Vanquish.

  5. No F/X or Sound Oscar Selections

    By daniel on 2003-01-09

After forty years and twenty pictures, Die Another Day holds the record for the most digital effects in any Bond film. However, Wednesday’s announcements for the F/F and Sound Editing by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences failed to include Die Another Day in the list of selections.

Some of Die Another Day‘s special effects were met with a cold response by some Bond fans, most unhappy with either the special effects quality or the simple break from tradition. However, most fans gave nothing but praise for the sound quality of the film.

Those films to win selections were Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Men in Black II, Minority Report, Spider-Man, Star Wars: Episode II — Attack of the Clones, The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers and the Bond-copy xXx.

Other category nominations for the 75th Academy Awards will be announced February 11 with the awards ceremony to be held March 23.

  7. The Truth Behind 'The Living Daylights' DVD

    By daniel on 2003-01-08

With The Living Daylights not being re-released in 2002 a rumour was reported as fact. In truth, Sam Neill has nothing to do with The Living Daylights not being re-released on DVD and VHS.

With the 40th anniversary of the James Bond series, and the release of Die Another Day looming, MGM re-released the previous James Bond adventures on DVD and VHS. However, despite nineteen official previous adventures MGM, and internationally Fox, were only releasing eighteen of the films. For an unknown reason, 1987’s The Living Daylights was excluded from the line-up.

Theories abounded as to why the film was not being re-released. Mid-November 2002 a rumour reached the Internet that claimed the real reason for the DVD’s disappearance was an injunction placed by actor Sam Neill. Neill’s screen test for the role of James Bond, which he lost to Timothy Dalton, was included on the DVD as a special feature. Neill reportedly objected to the inclusion of the screen test and the DVD was prevented from being produced without re-authoring.

The rumour was soon, and incorrectly, reported as fact.

As a result, copies of the 2000 DVD release of The Living Daylights, since out of print due to a moratorium, have sold for in excess of $150 on auction site eBay, with most sellers making a point that the DVD includes the Sam Neill screen test.

However, Sam Neill has nothing to do with the DVD’s lack of availability. In truth, contractual negotiations meant that MGM did not own the rights to distribute the film on DVD or VHS.

The rights to distribute the official James Bond films are owned by Danjaq LLC who, in turn, sell a fifteen year distribution licence to MGM. The licence for the distribution of The Living Daylights expired in 2002, fifteen years after the initial release of the film.

Hence, with the contract in negotiation during 2002 The Living Daylights could not be re-released on DVD by MGM or Fox. For a short while it was made available in the full box set edition, however, these have now been recalled because of the inclusion.

    To date, the only official statement about the films exclusion from re-release was sent in to UK television program ‘Watchdog’. It read;

The reason the James Bond DVD “The Living Daylights” is not available to purchase as a single disc, yet is available in the James Bond Collection box set, is due to a pending rights issue that we had anticipated would have been resolved before our November DVD release.

However, production timelines meant that we had assembled and packaged the Box Set including “The Living Daylights” in advance of the release, and an interim agreement was reached that we could sell “The Living Daylights” in the Box Set.

We hope to resolve the issue soon and will make “The Living Daylights” available as a single product again as soon as possible.

John Cork who directed and produced ‘Inside The Living Daylights’, the DVD documentary that features Neill’s screen test, told CommanderBond.net that news of Neill’s injunction could not be true as “a signed release [had been obtained] from Sam Neill for the inclusion of his screen test during the production of ‘Inside The Living Daylights’.”

Furthermore, both MGM and Danjaq have confirmed that there are no plans to delete the screentest from future releases of the special edition DVD of The Living Daylights.

While currently unavailable, just like James Bond, The Living Daylights will return. At present it exists is not in production in any distribution regions, however, it is expect to be released within the near future.

  9. Korean Cinema Cancels Screenings

    By daniel on 2003-01-06

A cinema outside Seoul in South Korea has reportedly stopping screening Die Another Day, less then a week after the film opened to the market.

The cinema made the decision due to low audience attendance and sour public sentiment.

It would seem obvious to tie the cancellation of the film to student protests about Die Another Day‘s Korean element. However, with the protestors in such low numbers, and the film reportedly doing well at other Korean cinemas, the cancellation seems dubious at best.

Die Another Day is reportedly fifth at the South Korean box-office.

The AMV8 Vantage, which was previously referred to as the AM305, is Aston Martin’s new entry level car and has an estimated price tag of US$100,000 attached to it. It’s connection with Bond 21 comes with the ‘entry level’ confirmation, Aston Martin having previously confirmed that Bond 21 will feature an entry level car, and also with the cars production date. The AMV8 Vantage will be launched during 2005, the same year as MGM intends to release Bond 21.

Most details about the AMV8 Vantage are still being kept a secret, however, it is known that the car is a two seater car powered a 4.3-litre V8 engine. More technical details are available from the Aston Martin Owners Club with further specifications scheduled to be announced at the Detroit Auto Show.
