  1. SPOILER: 'Royale' Plot Revelation

    By Matt Weston on 2005-10-21

    WARNING: PLOT SPOILERS AHEAD

Director Martin Campbell has stated on several occasions that Casino Royale — the 21 James Bond film which sees the début of Daniel Craig as 007 — will remain basically true to the original 1953 Ian Fleming novel. But that doesn’t mean there won’t be some necessary plot changes in order to update the film for 2006.

As CBn revealed last month, gambling will remain central to the Casino Royale plotline, but instead of Baccarat, the game will be poker. Now CBn has another plot revelation to share with those who are not spoiler sensitive.

     Daniel Craig is James Bond

Daniel Craig as 007 battles terrorism in Casino Royale

As in the novel, money won and lost at the gambling tables will have deadly implications for the Western world. In the novel the villain Le Chiffre is gambling with funds spearheaded for covert Russian Soviet spy activities via SMERSH. But in the film version, Le Chiffre’s winnings will be used to fund a very contemporary threat…

    TERRORISM.

Yes, James Bond joins the “war on terror” in Casino Royale.

However, the terror organizing will not be Al Qaeda, nor will any real-world country be implicated. Le Chiffre will be a part of a new SPECTRE-like terror organization backed by a fictitious country. This new terror organization may become a recurring threat in future James Bond films as SPECTRE was in the early films (because of a history of legal issues, Eon continues to avoid the use of SPECTRE — even the new EA Bond videogame, From Russia With Love, changes SPECTRE to “OCTOPUS”). As revealed at last Friday’s press conference, Purvis and Wade are already at work on Bond 22.

The idea of a fictitious “enemy nation” is not new to the world of Bond. The South American country of Isthmus was created for Licence To Kill (1989), and the Caribbean island of San Monique for Live and Let Die (1973), both because of the implications of institutionalized drug smuggling.

But this doesn’t necessarily mean Casino Royale will be set in this fictitious country. As in the Bond classic From Russia With Love (1963), Bond will most-likely be playing his deadly cat and mouse games with enemy agents in a real-world locale, although it is still unclear exactly which real-world locale this will be.

As first reported on CBn, Casino Royale was originally scheduled to film largely in South Africa, but problems securing locations forced a change to The Bahamas and Italy.

Casino Royale begins shooting in January and is due for release worldwide on November 17, 2006.

  2. Czech Republic Locations Revealed

    By johncox on 2005-10-19

Bond fans have known since May that Casino Royale, the 21st James Bond film which sees the debut of Daniel Craig as 007, would be filming in the Czech Republic. However, up until now it was reported that filming would be confined largely to studio soundstage work.

    Karlovy Vary

The spa town of Karlovy Vary will play a role in Casino Royale

But now Misha Olexova, marketing director of Stillking Films (which has landed the job of local co-producer) reveals that Casino Royale will also shoot on location in the capital city of Prague and its surroundings, as well as the spa town of Karlovy Vary. The Casino Royale team will spend six-months shooting in the Czech Republic starting in January.

This will be the first time that a James Bond movie has filmed inside the Czech Republic. 1987’s The Living Daylights — the Bond film that saw the debut of Timothy Dalton as 007 — featured scenes set in Bratislava (then part of the united country of Czechoslovakia), but that city was doubled by locations in Vienna.

Stillking Film’s managing director, Matthew Stillman, said the co-production deal signed with EON Productions is “an important step for us as well as the local film community.”

Casino Royale was originally scheduled to shoot in South Africa, but problems securing locations forced the producers to look elsewhere. Apart from the Czech Republic, Casino Royale will film in The Bahamas, Italy, and Pinewood Studios in the UK. Club 007 France is reporting today that the Italian location featured in Casino Royale will be Venice, but CBn could not confirm this.

During last Friday’s press conference, producer Michael G. Wilson called Casino Royale “very much a location based film.”

Casino Royale will be released by MGM/Columbia Pictures on November 17, 2006.

  3. Campbell Answers Craig Critics

    By johncox on 2005-10-17

To the media wags who have criticized Daniel Craig’s casting as James Bond in Casino Royale, director Martin Campbell’s message is clear:

     Daniel Craig is James Bond

“He’s a very gritty, interesting-looking guy, very handsome in a different way.” -Campbell

    “Wait until the movie.”

Speaking last night at the world premiere of Legend of Zorro at the Orpheum Theatre in downtown Los Angeles, Campbell said, “When I directed GoldenEye, they dumped on that even while I was shooting it, saying, ‘Give up. Bond is dead.” In England, Campbell says, “It went on and on and on.”

Campbell then elaborated on why he picked Craig:

“He’s a very gritty, interesting-looking guy, very handsome in a different way. He’s going to be a more adaptable, realistic Bond than perhaps we’ve had in the past.”

Meanwhile, former Miss Moneypenny actress Samantha Bond has chimed in with her opinion of the new 007. “As for Daniel as Bond, I think it is an absolutely brilliant choice. He is butch, male, attractive and a bloody good actor. He was by far the most plausible choice.”

While the media has characterized online Bond fans as universally rejecting Craig, a poll here on CommanderBond.net — the largest James Bond fan forum on the internet — shows that 60% of fans favor Craig; 28% do not; and 12% elect to take Campbell’s advice and will “wait and see.”

Casino Royale will be the 21st James Bond film produced by EON Productions. The MGM/Columbia Pictures production begins shooting in January and is due for release worldwide on November 17, 2006. It will be filmed in the Czech Republic, the Bahamas, Italy and the UK.

  5. Wilson Clarifies Craig Casting Decision

    By johncox on 2005-10-15

In a revealing interview with the New York Times, producer Michael G. Wilson has clarified the facts surrounding yesterday’s casting of Daniel Craig as James Bond in Casino Royale.

“I was desperately afraid, and Barbara [Broccoli] was desperately afraid, we would go downhill,” said Wilson, who shared this concern with Craig’s predecessor, Pierce Brosnan. “We are running out of energy, mental energy,” Wilson recalled saying. “We need to generate something new, for ourselves.”

Wilson says the decision to not go with Pierce for a fifth film had nothing to do with money. “If we wanted to make a deal, we would’ve made a deal with Pierce at some financially viable level,” he said. “This was about us trying to find new inspiration for the series.”

     Daniel Craig is James Bond

Barbara Broccoli wanted Daniel Craig in April, but Sony wanted more tests

The decision to cast a new James Bond also came about partly because of a shift in the leisure habits of young men, who used to be the most avid moviegoing audience but have been migrating to other interests. In the late 1990’s, market research showed Bond movies to have the oldest demographic of any action-adventure series. Lately, however, the booming success of Bond video games has driven a younger audience to the movies, said Wilson. Sony and the producers did not want to disappoint this new audience.

However, the sale of MGM/UA slowed down the casting process, said Wilson. Casting had already been going on in London when a consortium led by Sony won a bidding war with Time Warner and acquired the historic studio and its a long-time partnership with the Bond franchise. Casting had to be re-examined when MGM came under the aegis of Sony motion picture group’s chief executive, Amy Pascal.

The Times cliams that, according to several executives involved in the project, Barbara Broccoli had already settled on Craig by April. Indeed, this was about the time when Craig was first announced to the world media as being the new Bond. But Pascal wanted to begin a more exhaustive search that would include other, younger actors.

Eventually, some 200 actors from throughout the British Commonwealth “came up for discussion.” They included well-known names like Colin Farrell, Orlando Bloom and Clive Owen, as well as many unknowns. Those who rated screen tests included the British actor Henry Cavill, the Australians Alex O’Lachlan and Sam Worthington, and the Croatian-born Goran Visnjic.

It was only after all these ruminations that the producers and Sony finally settled on Daniel Craig. “I think that he has a kind of intensity, and a sexuality, and a roguishness,” says Pascal. “And he seems like he could be a spy.”

  7. DANIEL CRAIG IS JAMES BOND

By The CBn Team on 2005-10-14

It’s official: Daniel Craig is the new James Bond!

Eon Productions and Sony Pictures Entertainment made the announcement today at a London press conference, ending more than 18 months of rampant speculation after four-time Bond Pierce Brosnan was dropped from the role in Feburary of last year.

The new James Bond, Daniel Craig

The actor has been signed to a three-picture deal starting with the upcoming 007 film, Casino Royale.

Craig arrived at the press conference via speedboat escorted by the Royal Navy. “I’d like to thank the marines for scaring the shit out of me,” he joked.

The press conference was attended by Michael G. Wilson, Barbara Broccoli, and director Martin Campbell. Wilson said they looked at over 200 actors, but Craig was the only one they offered the film to. Campbell called his new Bond “fantastic.”

Craig said he found out on Monday that he had the role. “I need a drink,” was his first reaction. Craig then added, “Together, with Martin, I want to make the best film we can. The most entertaining film we can. And it’s not a question of redefining, but it’s a question of taking it somewhere maybe where it’s never gone before.”

Wilson confirmed that Casino Royale would be James Bond’s “first mission” as a double-oh agent and that the central relationship with the Bond Girl is more serious and will effect Bond’s character at the end. Campbell said it is “definitely a darker film, more character, less gadgets.”

Daniel Craig’s road to Bond has been a curious one.

In April, the 37-year-old British actor was suddenly and mysteriously touted by media the world over as having landed the role. However, no official confirmation was forthcoming and reports later confirmed the Bond search was still ongoing.

Craig then revealed to IGN Filmforce that he had been offered the role by the studio, but not by Eon Productions. Later, trade paper The Hollywood Reporter claimed that Barbara Broccoli wanted Craig, but co-producer Michael G. Wilson did not. Craig is said to be a close personal friend of the Broccoli family.

Craig’s candidacy disappeared amid reports of younger candidates until CBn exclusively broke the news in its monthly podcast that Craig was back in serious contention for the role, despite comments by screenwriter Paul Haggis and Martin Campbell that Bond in Casino Royale would be a rookie agent of just 28 years old.

The rumblings and rumours about Craig’s candidacy intensified throughout September and October until the Daily Mail announced on Monday that Craig had, indeed, landed the part. A flurry of unconfirmed press reports followed…ending today with Craig’s official appointment to Her Majesty’s Secret Service.

Bond fans have been split down the middle about Daniel Craig’s suitability for the part. Beauty, as they say, is in the eye of the beholder. Fans advocating for Craig believe the actor would bring a new edge to the character, with many highlighting his physical likeness to Hoagy Carmichael, whom Ian Fleming said was his ideal model of how 007 should look. Other fans have been less enthusiastic, arguing the actor to be a far cry from the heretofore standard for the cinematic James Bond.

Daniel Craig was born in Chester, England in 1968. After growing up in Liverpool and moving to England, he joined the National Youth Theatre at the age of 16 and later secured a place at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. In 1992 he made theatrical acting debut in the filmic adaptation of Bryce Courtenay’s The Power Of One. Craig’s filmography includes Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, Road To Perdition, The Jacket and his critically-acclaimed turn as an unnamed drug dealer in Layer Cake. He will next appear alongside Eric Bana and Geoffrey Rush in Steven Spielberg’s new film, Munich.

And in 2006, Daniel Craig will make his debut appearance as James Bond, 007 in Casino Royale.

Casino Royale will be the 21st James Bond film produced by the franchise holders, EON Productions. The MGM/Columbia Pictures production begins shooting in January and is due for release worldwide on November 17, 2006. It will be filmed in the Czech Republic, the Bahamas, Italy and the UK.

  8. 007 Press Conference to be Held Aboard 'HMS President'

    By Charles Helfenstein on 2005-10-13

Variety.com reports that tomorrow’s press conference — in which the identity of who will play James Bond in Casino Royale will be revealed by Eon Productions and Sony Pictures Entertainment — will be held at 12 noon aboard the historic HMS President, a World War I spy vessel moored on the River Thames near Blackfriars Bridge in the City of London.

    Crest of the HMS President

    Crest of the HMS President

According to the official website, the HMS President is a static moored ship and a favorite tourist attraction along London’s Victoria Embankment. Dinners are served aboard the ship which boasts spectacular views of the river as well as some of London’s most famous landmarks such as the London Eye, The South Bank Centre, The National Theatre, St Paul’s Cathedral, and The Tate Modern.

The ship contains a magnificent spacious Ball Room that it offers 2500 square feet without columns. This versatile space is most likely the location of tomorrow’s press conference.

During it’s service in the first World War, the HMS President was part of Britain’s fleet of “Q-boats.” The Q-boats were Britain’s answer to German U-boat attacks. These fighting vessels were actually ordinary ships built as decoys. The ships had guns under dummy lifeboats or hidden under fake funnels and awnings. Some of the ships used paint to hide their cache of weaponry. The idea was to lure the U-boat into attacking these decoy ships which would then unleash their hidden weaponry.

The HMS President, the last surviving Q-boat, was very much a maritime Aston Martin DB5.

Certainly a very fitting place to unveil the new 007.

  10. Bond #6: Is it Daniel Craig?

    By Tim Roth on 2005-10-11

    British tabloid "Daily
    Mail
" today reports that Daniel Craig is about to become James Bond #6 in the
upcoming Bond movie Casino Royale. According to the paper, Craig "won" the
re-audition against 22-year-old Henry Cavill. Both were invited for a second
    screentest, the tabloid claims.

    Daniel Craig

    Daniel Craig

The "Daily Mail" claims that "Craig, 37, will be confirmed
by producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G Wilson later this week. He will be the
sixth Bond, but the first blond."

What is interesting about this piece of news is the fact that it was written by Nicole Lampert, the woman who first reported that
Pierce Brosnan was out back in February 2004. At the time, the news
was seen as "just another tabloid rumour", but we all know how the story went. Nicole Lampert was accused of being a "liar", but she affirmed the
reliability of her source "near the production" several times.

Has her source hit again? Is 37-year old Daniel Craig the successor of Pierce
    Brosnan? And what about the
consequences for the script? Last week, director Martin Campbell

    confirmed
that the script was written for a "28 to 30 years old James Bond".

Last week CBn reported that a decision as to who would play Bond would be made this week. Has that decision been made?

If the "Daily Mail" is genuine, we should know within the next few days. Stay tuned!

    Update (10:50AM):

Variety.com is reporting Craig’s publicist only offered a “no comment” and the PRs at Eon Productions, the producers of the Bond franchise, were said to be “in a meeting.”

Craig’s agents ICM in London said they couldn’t comment until Eon made an announcement but expected that 007 producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson would let the cat out of the bag by the end of the week.
